Let’s talk about nuts. It’s about time since I told you a while ago I would explain why I took them out of my diet. I’m an assh*le. Good spot to put an asterisk huh?
Anywho, nuts. So I cut out nuts lately. If you’ve read my blog before, you know I’m super down for nuts. Like, love nuts. Almond butter sings to me. I make homemade nut butters to calm my nerves. Or make me smile. BUT, my body doesn’t really like nuts. As I’ve talked about in past posts, my body has changed drastically within the last year. Along with how my body reacts to different foods. You see, when I first started eating almond butter, I lost a balls ton of weight and had a crap ton of energy. Now, when I eat almond butter, I’m bloated like nobody’s business, I don’t feel very good and I almost feel fatigued or weighed down. I wasn’t sure if nuts were the main culprit so I just decided to cut them out completely to test out the theory. I’ve also been told by many people that cutting out nuts can help with acne. Well, it’s been almost 3 weeks without nuts and feel awesome. I don’t feel like I’ve lost any weight nor do I feel like my skin looks better, but I’ve had compliments from a couple people saying I look leaner and my skin looks better. I think they are liars, but whatever. Laura cut out nuts with me and she says the same thing, she feels better and her body is working better. To say the least, our digestive tracts are working awesome. You’re welcome Laura, I’m sure you appreciate me telling the world wide web that.
I’ve still had a random nut tastes here and there. Making some nut butter for my crush last week and making sure it didn’t taste like crap was one of the times. He’s real good lookin. Then yesterday, I filmed some cooking videos with my wonderful friends Ian and Patrick from Again Faster, in hopes of making it onto the CrossFit Journal, fingers crossed!! But I cooked up some of my favorite paleo desserts and still didn’t even eat much of them. I didn’t even crave them that much. Very impressive for me because they were my favorite desserts. Ian even said my Sticky Apple Bars were the best thing he’s ever eaten. Badass. So I just left the rest of the desserts in the fridge for Rj of CrossFit Deco…since it was his kitchen. Thank you Rj, we would have literally died of suffocation or heat exhaustion in my little dink of a kitchen space.
So here is what I think about nuts. I’m not against them, I’m really not. I think they are great for some people. And almond butter was one of the things that helped me eat paleo in the first place. But I honestly do think I have an allergy to nuts. I don’t think my body processes them very well. Hopefully this f*cking acne clears up soon and nuts were the whole reason behind having adolescent zits. Fingers crossed twice!!
So since I just bashed nuts, I made a recipe with them today. Sorry no nut people, but it had to be done for this recipe. Somethings gotta give. I just wanted to say that. But I do give you guys TWO different options for this dip. A paleo-fied version and a cheese version. I eat cheese once in a while because it’s delicious and I don’t feel like poo poo after I eat it, so I thought I’d make a second dip version for you people out there that still eat dairy. Paleo purists, stop hatin’.
OH, omg I almost forgot to tell you…my buddy Jon will be providing you all with a wonderful celebrity guest post on Friday! Jon is pretty cool. He’s funny. And has abs that go for days. You will not find any lovey dovey sh*t on his post. Jon doesn’t love me. He loves CrossFit. And paleo. So he’s gonna get science-y on us. How cool is that? He’s going to talk about post workout nutrition. And make you all understand why you eat healthy. I don’t get that stuff. Nor care. Thank you Jon.
- 2 (14oz) cans artichoke hearts (mine were in brine), chopped
- 16oz frozen spinach
- 1 cup cashews, roasted and unsalted
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
- all of the ingredients above
- 2 ounces goat cheese at room temperature
- Add frozen spinach and artichokes to large saucepan over medium heat and sprinkle with just a bit of salt.
- While your spinach thaws and artichokes warm up, pull out your handy dandy food processor.
- Place cashews in food processor and turn on. Grind until your cashews become a flour then begin to pour in your olive oil until you get a creamy consistency. Kind of like a super creamy cashew butter.
- Once your spinach is completely thawed and it’s all good and warm, drain the excess water from your saucepan and add spinach and artichoke to a large bowl.
- Add your creamy cashews and seasons to the bowl and mix thoroughly.
- Serve with sweet potato chips or veggies!
- Follow all steps above.
- Add goat cheese to your cashews and spinach and artichoke mixture. Mix well to combine.
- Serve with sweet potato chips or veggies!

Yum!! Definitely going to make this soon. Are your chips homemade?
I made your cherry browning tonight! Delicious, and my 8 year old (picky) son loved them, too. Thank you!
No ma’am, they are ‘food should taste good’ brand.
Er, brownies, LOL…
Love the sound of this dip, the flavours sound like they would be awesome.
Cashews aren’t nuts hun. In fact, they are carcinogenic to humans the way they are processed….
please never call me hun. and they are delicious.
I’m dying laughing. I too hate… HATE when people call me hun.
But in other news… I will try this for sure… but minus goat cheese and including some cream cheese- because that’s what floats my boat :)
Cheers
Aly
Goat cheese in spinach dip sounds incredible!
Interesting how much difference giving up nuts has made. I think it’s something I might have to try… are you OK with seeds?
I seem to be ok with eating sunflower and pumpkin seeds
Just had a question juli! What is sun butter exactly, and you still eat it when you’re avoiding nuts?
This recipe looks awesome. And I love you.
Thanks!
sunbutter is sunflower seed butter :) so it’s made from a seed instead of a nut!
I could stand to lessen the nut consumption too, but i just discovered cashew butter so thats not happening anytime soon unfortunately.
You have just changed my life forever! I freakin love spinach and artichoke dip and its my worst paleo cheat, I literally cannot help myself. Now I can put that internal conflict to rest. You are forever my hero and I will use the internet to only visit your site from now on, because all other sites are clearly useless :p
I finally made this over the weekend. My husband and I are forever in your debt. It was amazing, I think I could serve that to anyone! We also for fun, compared your recipe to one from food network and almost vomited reading the ingredients!
Now we’re talking!! I love recipes like this – can’t wait to try it
What are you eating with the dip? Are those homemade chips?
they are ‘food should taste good’ sweet potato chips. i found them at whole foods.
Maybe you have tried this, but I had a friend with horrible acne and her Dr. told her to wash her face with liquid dial soap (you know the amber-colored hand soap?). Well she did and it totally cleared up her skin! It might be worth trying if you haven’t tried it already?!
Also, I got really bad acne in my hair line from my shampoo…I switched to sulfate-free shampoo and never get zits anymore! Maybe that would help too? :0)
“Paleo purists, stop hatin’ ”
Best line ever. Ima steal it.
My digestion has basically been crappy for the last 7 or so years. I’ve made a couple of tweaks lately that have me feeling waaaaaaay better. I’ve pretty much cut out almonds, but am still eating a fair amount of cashews and cashew butter (from the grinder at Whole Foods). The cashews don’t seem to bother me like almonds/almond butter can. That might be because the cashew is more seed-like than nut-lke (at least as I understand it)? Anyway, I know we are all different, but if you dip the toe back into the “nut” waters, you might see how these treat you, since you know heavy almond intake disagrees with you.
Glad to hear you are feeling well. That’s big-time.
holy sweet baby jesus….I just keep finding ways for my inner fat kid to still enjoy life with all of these delicious recipes!!! MMMM!
all i can say is wow…thank you!
I found the same thing with nuts. I have cut them out for the most part and I notice a HUGE difference in how I look and feel.
Made version 1 and it was delicious. I will do version 2 next time I have some Goat cheese. So super easy too! I bet its even better the next day when its had time to meld all the goodies together. Thanks again!
I’m sooooooooooooo jealous that you’re hosting a women’s only lifting class in Colorado. I mean, I know that’s where you live and all but can’t you just make a quick trip to the east coast and hold this class at Crossfit Hoboken?!
This dip looks amazeballs. Def trying it asap.
Another amazing recipe. This dip is so my weakness (the non-paleo version).. love this version. looks amaaaaaazing!!
This recipe looks delicious – my parents are visiting next week and I may need to make this for the 4th! I have to ask though – No more chocolate covered walnuts!?
No more :( life is sad
well it might not be chocolate and fully replace your love of chocolate covered walnuts, but lately when I want a “sweet treat” a little almond butter (but you could used sunbutter) on a few dried dates is delicious. Gives you that “sweet and salty” fix!
What kind of chips(sweet potato I assume) are those that you are using with the dip
Those are ‘Food Should Taste Good’ sweet potato chips. they are awesome, only sweet potato, sunflower oil, and salt are the ingredients! I also eat Terra Chips sometimes.
i’m glad that cutting out nuts is working for you! Personally, I’ve found that I can tolerate medium amounts of nuts just fine if I soak them first… for those of you out there questioning your nut consumption, it’s something that’s worth trying if you don’t want a life with zero almond butter.
p.s. re: your skin. obviously it’s best to fix whatever diet/lifestyle issues are causing acne, but in the meantime I’ve had TONS of success using oil cleansing + manuka honey as a spot treatment. The only problem is putting the honey on my face, not in my mouth.
Hey sarah, what site do you look at for oil cleansing info?
JB – Here’s the oil cleansing site info I’ve used. After years of overspending on the useless ProActiv products, this is working sooooo much better. You will def need to give it a few weeks for your skin to adjust, but living here in our dry climate of CO, it really helps!!

Skin: I’m gonna throw it out there again because I’ve been doing it now for over a month with awesome results – Pantothenic Acid supplements. I also started the benz peroxide regimen from acne.org (after supplementing – started with a megadose but have tapered down), and my skin hasn’t looked this good since before adolescence (which was, uh, more than 20 years ago). I have had one or two spots but it is like a miracle. Happy to tell you more about it if you email me.
Hi Juli, I just started following you a few weeks ago and I love your recipes. So, I just wanted to share that I used to eat nuts like they were going out of style. Then I had a boyfriend allergic to tree nuts and I stopped buying them all together (did you know kissing someone who just ate nuts can still cause an allergic reaction:) Well after we broke up I discovered nuts again, and I discovered how bloated they make me feel too. So I’ve struggled with having them in my diet as well. The one thing I’ve found is that some nuts seem to affect me differently and most importantly, I cannot have nuts more than once eery few days. I don’t believe in cutting anything out of my diet, but I do believe in moderation.
Also, for you skin. I’m a native CO girl too and also had horrible acne for most of my life. In CO, even if your skin feels oily, it probably is actually dry (skin over compensates for being dry by producing more oils). So the best thing I’ve found is to use the most sensitive face washes (Aveeno daily detox is good) and a really good, mostly natural moisturizer (Clinique moisturizing gel or Alba is good). And up your vitamin A intake (keep eating those sweet potatos!). I swear it will help.
Oh, I can’t wait to make this dip!
I am so with you there on the nuts. I love them, but they don’t love me. A few bits of almond butter and my stomach is in major pain. My digestion is like 10929848363 times better without them too! And sadly coconut butter/oil is out for me too :( What is a paleo girl to do?!
This looks amazing!! I’m definitely putting it on the menu for next week. You are awesome Juli!
Just made this and omg was it amazing, but I’m now out of sweet potato chips. Any other ideas for dippage?
Veggies!
WOW just made this! Mine looks slightly less creamy but is seriously awesome!! Love this!
This looks super yummy! I am moving in a few weeks and have some frozen artichokes and raw cashews to use up and a Paleo potluck coming soon.
I also have noticed that my body doesn’t like nuts very much… makes me so sad!
I never used to eat nuts, but paleo recipes had turned me around, and the past few months I have been eating heaping bowls full of nuts/seeds/berries for breakfast or dessert. Then I realized how bloated they made me feel. Blah.
So I have cut back, and feel much better. I will still use them for treats, or small parts of recipes, but will no longer indulge quite so much.
Also – for this recipe, does it matter if the cashews are roasted or raw?
I used roasted
I didn’t have cashews so I used walnuts, delicious! Thanks for sharing.
Definitely 5 stars but for dome reason my kindle wouldn’t check my stars.
Could you substitute almond/cashew/sun butter for making your own cashew butter concoction, or is the consistency different?
I’m not sure but its worth a try!
Dont feel bad about the fingernails, I am a florist, and my nails are always so brutal I consistently look like a dirt ball who doesnt shower. We are throwing a redneck theme Bday party for my hubby, I was thinking this would be a good appetizer, but this isnt really redneck food? I suppose the dirty fingernails and nascar clothes will make up for the food being too fancy :)
This dip is AMAZING!! I might have made it two days in a row, it’s that good!
Kelly and I just made version 2 last night…..yum!!!! PS….really bummed that you will not be joining Sergio this weekend
Have you ever heard of or looked into leaky gut syndrome? You might find that anything you eat a lot of will eventually give you allergy-like symptoms. You feel better once you stop eating it, your “gut” heals, and then you can have more. It’s a big reason that I try to rotate my foods often. I don’t want to screw around with having to “cut” things all the time. Just an idea! :)
Hi! I’ve only been paleo for a few months, but nuts are pretty much my main source of calories when I’m not sitting down to large slabs of meat. I would love to try cutting them b/c I’ve still got some of those exciting “IBS” symptoms. So my question is – how do you avoid hanger without almonds? What are your fav prot-packed snack ingredients? Also, any tips for breaking a pushup plateau? They’re my WODs’ weakest link. Thanks!!
My snacks are usually smaller meals, like some kind of protein and fat. But I’ll also eat a banana with sunbutter sometimes. And for pushups, the more you do, the better you’ll be at them. Promise you that.
Have you tried using coconut oil on your skin? I was hesitant to try it at first because I have super acne-prone skin, but I figured if it didn’t work, I’d just stop using it. I’m not a model or anything so a few extra zits wouldn’t be the be-all-end-all. I broke out at first (the oil drawing out toxins maybe?), but now about 2 months later my skin has never looked better. I also use Dr. Bronner’s tea tree oil castile soap, which also works wonders.
I have only just recently started following your blog so you may have already covered this….but do you eat dairy? I ask because I had terrible acne for a time up to my early twenties, was on topical antibiotics which cleared it up to some degree but it wasn’t until I cut out dairy that my skin cleared up. Completely. I am a redhead with super fair, sensitive skin and no more breakouts! I was able to tolerate goat and sheep dairy for a bit but eventually had to cut that out as well. Headaches and tummy upsets gone too.
Anywho, I am sure you have probably had a million people suggest ditching dairy (and perhaps you already have) but just thought I would pipe in. Just in case. Wish I had considered dietary changes back then but it was rarely even brought into the equation. Sure hadn’t heard of paleo when I was 16!
All the best!
Rarely. I sometimes do heavy cream in my coffee but mostly coconut milk is my go to at this point. Thanks for the tip though!! I’m trying everything at this point haha!
I just made the non-cheese recipe and it is really fantastic! Juli, thank you for posting a wonderful alternative to a party staple. I will make this over and over again:)
I just recently started paleo and found your website and LOVE it!!! You are too funny!! I made this and the sweet potato brownies yesterday and they are awesome. I am a horrible cook so was really excited that I didn’t screw up your recipes. Thanks for sharing and I look forward to making many more of your recipes.
I was skeptical about this recipe but it was soo amazing!!!! I loved every bite of it. I added the cheese in since it was a holiday :)
I made this for my part of the 4th of July BBQ and it was a huge hit! I decided to wait to tell people it was actually good for you until there were just scrapings left in the bowl. Then I said, HA it’s Paleo!!! For some reason I have family members give me crap about eating paleo so it was great to pull a fast one on them. Afterwards I had to pass out this website to everyone so they could make it themselves. Thanks for another hit!
Yummy!! I pretty much made a meal out of this dip and celery sticks!! Great recipe, thanks.
Hey hun.. so I posted this recipe on my instagram and my blog (ALWAYS give you credit) but I got asked to put the recipe in an article.. I said I wouldn’t have a problem with submitting it as long as you got recognized for it. Tasty25.com if you want to check it out.. just thought Id throw it your way.. pretty much my excuse to talk to you because I have an e-crush on you :) and think your recipes are KICK ASS! Best wishes!
Hey! Totally feel you on the acne thing. I’m like, okay, I got through my teens, why can’t I just leave this shit behind?! A few months ago I found acne.org – it’s this guy in SF who has perfected this simple regimen that works wonders. He formulated a cleanser, strong benzoyl peroxide, and moisturizer. In just a few weeks, my totally fucked up face has been 99% cured of all blemishes. It’s incredible. I can go outside again without feeling like a 13 year old!!!! Now I feel obligated to pass the wisdom on to anyone else having this issue! I know I sound like a crazy ad but this stuff really changed my life. Good luck + keep the awesome recipes coming!
Dumb question. Can you use fresh spinach? It’s all I have on hand :/
yes, you’l just have to cook it down first
This dip is amazing! My wife has been making all of your recipes and so far, this dip and paleo berry bars are can’t live without items. I just was co winner of a paleo contest at my affiliate, and the credit goes to my coaches, your recipes and my wife for making them. You are awesome!
I’m sure the dip is amazing, but you turned me on to sweet potato chips with this post.
When I first saw the post I thought that looks good, but I am SO OVER eating dip from celery sticks. When I saw the sweet potato chips I headed to the store for the ingredients for the dip and these nummy, nummy chips.
My chunky, chip loving butt managed to eat most of the chips on the ride home, so alas I haven’t tried the dip, but I love you oh so much for introducing chips back into my life.
http://thebeautygypsy.com/what-is-your-acne-telling-you/
Once again you have rocked my face off! My husband is a major foodie and he loves this … he thinks it is “so much better than all the other junk out there” … keep them coming girl … and we will keep following!
INCREDIBLE. Best Spinach and Artichoke Dip I’ve ever had, and there wasn’t even any cheese in it. AWESOME.
Whoa! This is super delicious, like, better than the dairy-laden real thing! I’m going to sear whole button mushrooms in coconut oil, then stuff them with this dip and stick the whole thing under the broiler. To serve at a 1920s theme murder mystery party. Yum, thanks for a great recipe!
Hi! I just came across this while doing a Google search for a paleo appetizer and I am SOOOO excited to try it! I have two questions:
1. Would walnuts work? I know they’re very different from cashews, but I have a whole bunch of them so…
2. I loooooooove goat cheese, but my BF does not… how “goat-cheesey” is version 2?
Also – I LOVE the Food Should Taste Good chips, especially the sweet potato ones, good call on that!
Thanks! I’ve made a bunch of stuff off of your site and have loved everything, keep it up!!
No you definitely need cashews. And its not incredibly goat cheesy, but still is some
So interesting! When I first switched to whole foods back in May I felt horrible, sluggish. I thought it was the detoxing but I didn’t really eat horribly before that. I told my hubby I wondered what it was. I ate a lot of almond stuff and was starting my day with a nut cereal made with almond milk. So I switched to oatmeal for breakfast (I’m whole foods, not solely paleo) and I have been totally better. I haven’t cut out nuts. I just don’t start my day with them. Glad to find this post because at the time I couldn’t find anyone on the net saying they had that problem. On another note, I will be trying to make the cheese free version of this spinach and artichoke dip tomorrow:) I hope it is as delicious as my mouth wants it to be:) Merry Christmas!
It was a winner. Me and my hubby loved it. And I am glad to have some leftover today to munch on:)!! Thanks!
This is amazing! My mom made a chicken and rice casserole at Christmas that was full of stuff I can’t eat. So when I got home I made this and added 2 cut up cooked chicken breasts and am mixing in some brown rice (not Paleo, I know, whatevs!) so amazingly delicious!
hey juli. i’m gonna make this and wanted to know if the cheese melts or if it stays in hard little blocks? i noticed you didn’t bake it and I’ve usually always baked my spinach dip before to melt the cheese. thanks!
it melts since the artichoke and spinach are warm
this was a HUGE hit at easter. we usually have the typical heavy, creamy dips so i was happy that my family embraced a lighter dip. even my stepdad loved it and he usually stays far away from any weird “paleo” things i make.
i ended up using sheep’s milk pecorino and a little goat’s milk gouda to mix in. probably 1/3 cup total. i thought it was very rich and tasty.
Do you eat this warm or cold. If warm does it reheat well?
Thanks for the great recipes!
warm! and yes, just heat up in the oven!
I made without cheese but doubled the cashews for more creaminess. Used fresh crushed garlic and added a little fresh lemon juice. Next time I will make with goat cheese. Fantastic recipe!!
