I have to be honest here…I don’t shop at Trader Joe’s very often. I have nothing against Trader Joe’s whatsoever, I just have 2 Whole Foods and 2 Natural Grocers closer to me than 1 Trader Joe’s, so it’s sometimes forgotten about. Which is a shame because I love Trader Joe’s. I love the writing on the labels. I love the products they create. And I love the customer service there. It’s a grocery store chain that feels like a mom-and-pop store. And every time I walk in, I always find some new and delicious, all at reasonable prices.

The interesting thing about Trader Joe’s that I just found out when I started writing up this post is that Trader Joe’s has been around since the 1950’s in California. This store set out to save customers money and give them the best value without forcing the customer to be in any sort of club or to use special cards. They just work hard to keep costs low forever and always. And as you start walking around Trader Joe’s, you’ll quickly notice their prices are amazing and they have unique items that you can’t find anywhere else.

And something I love about their website is they include a list of their Gluten Free, Kosher and Vegan items. I’m not kosher nor am I vegan, but I know those are important to other people so I thought I would link them here. However, I am gluten free and this list was quite helpful! It’s nice to know what you can find before even walking in the store.

Ok, let’s get to this! If you are a Trader Joe’s fanatic and you have special items you love picking up every time you are there, please share in the comments below! I would love to know what you look for so I can grab those next time around! For me, whenever I’m heading into Trader Joe’s, I’m always buying flowers! Their flowers are always affordable, beautiful and THEY LAST! I get so sick of buying expensive flower and then they die within a couple days. That never happens with Trader Joe’s flowers. Which is helpful since I often buy flower for food photos.

One of the best parts about Trader Joe’s is their produce section. They make meal prep SO EASY! They have pre-chopped kale, vegetables already cut into noodles or fries or ribbons, carrots already peeled, brussels sprouts cut, and anything else you may need – all already prepped and ready for you to quickly cook. When I share posts like Easy Meals I Make at Home in Under 30 Minutes, I’m often relying on vegetables that are already cut and ready to cook. Sometimes, slicing and dicing can be the most time consuming (and annoying) piece of cooking and thanks to Trader Joe’s produce section, that piece annoying part is taken out completely!

When you walk in to Trader Joe’s, you’ll notice that 90% of what you find in the store is Trader Joe’s label and they’ve used their own label to come out with really cool products like their dressings that have no added canola oil. Or their nut butters that have all sorts of different nuts and/or flax seeds and chia seeds. It’s pretty awesome.

You can also find some amazing pantry staples for incredibly affordable prices! Some of my favorites include their 25oz maple syrup that lasts quite a while (unless I’m shooting pancake and waffle recipes) along with their olive oil spray (stop using canola spray!!) and their incredibly delicious buffalo ghee that has added spices in it! It’s such a tasty way to add flavor to vegetables and meat!

And when you’re looking to add flavor to dishes, Trader Joe’s has an amazing spice rack but I normally just reach for the Everything but the Bagel seasoning because it’s delicious on everything! Someone told me that they are discontinuing this. I’m not sure if that’s true and why they would even do that, but it’s a shame because this stuff is amazing. If that IS true, load up next time you are there! Another item that is super cool and delicious is their organic canned coconut milk! No added junk or gums in this coconut milk!

Now for snacks, because Trader Joe’s ROCKS at snacks. I like going to Trader Joe’s whenever I have an upcoming trip and know I’ll need some snacks on hand. They crush the snack game. In their cereal section, you can find some gluten free granolas that look delicious. I haven’t tried either of these yet, but I snagged a photo of both because they sounded delicious!

When I was in California writing my second book and in Pittsburgh writing my third, I often went to Trader Joe’s to grab bags full of nuts and different dried fruits. Trader Joe’s has THE BEST prices when it comes to nuts, seeds and dried fruits. You can find every nut under the sun, but I especially love the already roasted and peeled hazelnuts. If you’ve ever roasted and peeled hazelnuts yourself, you know it’s a time consuming pain in the ass. It’s worth it and it smells so damn good, but it’s annoying AF. And Trader Joe’s takes that stress out of making your own chocolate hazelnut butter from my third book. Plus they have dried fruit and freeze dried fruit and a ton of trail mix!

If you ever go to Trader Joe’s, their chocolate items are a MUST. They have some many delicious chocolatey treats, but I love the Dark Chocolate Honey Mints the most! It’s like a peppermint patty and only has 3 ingredients. They are a little bit like crack. And the perfect after dinner treat!

And if you want more snacks, not to worry, they have some great savory options! They have plantain chips that are absolutely amazing! And they have beet chips are are awesome too. Don’t be alarmed when your pee or other substances turn red or slightly pink. You’re not dying. You’re just filled with all sorts of vitamins and minerals!

And if you want to grab some drinks other than just boring water, Trader Joe’s has a couple of my favorites. They have a few flavors of Spindrift (which I’m insanely obsessed with) and they also have a brand called La Colombe which is NOT paleo in any capacity, but I love it for a little coffee treat sometimes! And it’s real damn good when you blend it into a smoothie!

Those are just a handful of the items I found and would or do purchase for our household. BUT again, I am not a Trader Joe’s aficionado, so if YOU have any recommendations or items you like to pick up while you are there, spill the beans! I’d love to hear what items make your life easier and cooking quicker! Can’t wait to hear what you guys grab when you head to Trader Joe’s!

Oh, Hi! I’m Juli.

I’m a food hoarder. And a really bad dancer. If you don’t know me well, you will probably not understand my humor. Therefore, I apologize ahead of time. Thanks for listening to my ramblings of my ever-changing life and trusting my kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is appreciated.

  1. Agree on the salsa! The organic roasted tomatillo … one (it’s a red salsa) is awesome quality & flavor. Also the organic coconut flakes and shreds are the best price I’ve found in stores or online. They also have good organic frozen fruit and we buy their frozen riced cauliflower all the time. This is all in addition to at least half of the selections you highlighted in your post! Unfortunately we don’t have a Whole Foods nearby, so Trader Joe’s is our go-to!

  2. Their salsas are the best store-bought versions around. And that riced cauliflower is the best time saver in the entire world. And I know this is 100% junk food, but their white cheddar popcorn in the pink bag is insanely yummy. My daughter and I have been known to down a whole bag in one sitting. Oooops!

  3. We LOVE Trader Joes frozen section. I love their frozen veggies to keep as backup in case we are between grocery runs and need an emergency meal. Their cauli rice is awesome and they have a cauli fried rice. Their cauli pizza crust is now gluten free (is used to have wheat, don’t ask me why because that totally defeats the purpose) and have that in our freezer also. The BEST part of Trader Joes is their Everything but the Bagel seasoning, which is the BEST on sweet potatoes.

  4. I love buying flowers from TJ’s… they last so long!! I am a big fan of their frozen vegetable section. It makes it easy to make a healthy stirfry when I don’t have much time to cook. One of my absolute favorites from there is their chili-spiced mango in the dried fruits section. It has some added sugar but it is sooo good.

  5. I definitely do a large chunk of my weekly grocery shopping at Trader Joe’s….their coconut aminos, cauliflower crust, cauliflower rice, ghee, olive oil, plantain chips, kale pesto, and basically all of their produce…they also have awesome grass-fed ground beef and ground pork!!

  6. I literally can’t get enough of the cashew butter. I am going to turn into a cashew. Also their organic frozen spinach is cheaper than I’ve seen elsewhere, which is good because I use a lot to add to my smoothies. And the chicken sausages. I LOVE TJS <3

  7. The Golden Berry Blend which is the best dried fruit blend ever.

The Almond Butter only has almonds and salt or just almonds if you don’t get the salted one.

The Salt and Pepper potato chips are the best potato chips ever.

The Frozen Spinach I just think it tastes better than other frozen spinach in my smoothies.

The unsweetened vanilla Almond Beverage. Like the frozen spinach it just tastes better than other Almond milk in my smoothies.

  8. You have to try their sausages over in the meat section. They are already cooked and you just fry them up in a skillet. I love the chardonnay apple, spinach and fontina, and roasted jalapeno flavors. They also have really great jellies next to the nut butters!

  9. I love their triple layered hummus (cilantro jalapeno is my jam!) and their marinated garlic mushrooms. I also just recently found out that they carry coconut aminos and it’s basically half the price I find it elsewhere!

  10. I purchased the everything bagel seasoning but am struggling to come up with ideas for how to utilize it. What do you use it on?? Thanks!!

  11. obsessed with the little snack packs of manzanilla olives.. the perfect snack, and so addictive. also they have great prices on smoked salmon, and i love their kale pesto, okra chips and the 21 seasoning salute

  12. Thank you for this post! I literally have a TJs right around the corner from my house which I pass every day on my way to/from work. I don’t utilize their store probably as much as I should – primarily because I’m overwhelmed by everything they have and didn’t know what is a good buy. Appreciate the post and the comments it started which have helped me make a list of what to look/buy the next time I go 🙂

  13. Their Sesame Soy Ginger Vinaigrette, Raw Almond Butter, Brined Feta, Dark Chocolate Coconut Almonds, and Garlic and Herb Pizza Crust (refrigerator section) are MUST-BUYS!
My nearest TJ is 2 hours away. I hope we get one closer. I love ’em!

  14. thanks for this great post! i just happened to be going near a trader joe’s that day, so i decided to stop in and get some things because of all the yummy items you wrote about.

  15. Trader Joe’s is my weekly go to… their ground chicken is pretty tasty along with their grass fed beef.. Produce and veggies are fresh and pretty inexpensive.. My carriage is pretty full ever week just from the produce and fruit isle. And they also have such beautiful and fresh flowers….

Once you shop there once you will be hooked 🙂

  16. I am obsessed with their Everyday Seasoning. I put it on EVERYTHIING I cook. For the last 4 years I’ve lived in Alaska and now Hawaii, so no Trader Joe’s. I have my mom send me a box every 2 months with 8-10 jars of this seasoning because I use it so much!!! Their Thai chile lime almonds are my husband’s favorite. Not paleo, but damn good.

  17. I think they said they were discontinuing the Everything But The Bagel seasoning as an April Fool’s Day joke!

  18. Trader Joe’s Hallomi cheese is amazing and it’s made from sheep’s milk!! Only a seasonal item during summer but add to kabobs! Also just found some frozen plantains which I add to smoothies for extra carbs on workout days or pan fry in coconut oil for an amazing dessert!

  19. If it is true that they are discontinuing the Everything But the Bagel Seasoning, I highly recommend Los Bagels’ Slug Slime. You can get it on Amazon and it is the best!

  20. Their seasonings are the best- I love their onion salt blend, really tasty on vegetables and eggs. The salted blister peanuts are really yummy and crunchy .Their dark chocolate lovers 85 percent is seriously some of the best dark chocolate for the money. Also I find good prices on kombucha there, though they have limited flavors.

  21. My fave TJ’s find is pork carnitas in the meat section. In my store, it’s usually up on the top shelf. It comes already marinated and cooked so all you have to do it heat it up in the microwave for a couple minutes and then crisp it under the broiler if you want to. It’s delish and a great time saver.

  22. The Spice House sells an everything bagel seasoning. I honk it’s much better than the TJs version. You can order online.

  23. The pre-cooked bacon that has NO nitrates is awesome to keep in the fridge. Easy to have on hand to add a little bit of bacon to whatever you are making that day. Cuz… who doesn’t like a little bit of bacon?!

  24. Brooke Anderson

I have found the bags of frozen organic riced cauliflower and frozen organic broccoli florets to be less expensive than the fresh. Also when they are out of fresh they usually always have the frozen, which is awesome. It keeps longer and frozen veggies can be more nutritious. I love the spindrift. They have guacamole that is in two separate packages that I love, the separate packaging keeps longer and the ingredient list is super clean. I can’t remember the exact name of the one I usually grab. When I want gf bread they have a yummy one!

  25. I love hearing what people like + love from TJ’s! I go there less often than I want……..but that’s good because I never tire of going inside! I shop with a basket and it gets so full………..I guess it’s an arm wkout too:)
I love their pasta sauce with the garlic in it….the olive oil choices, the cheeses, the frozen aisle, the margarita mix, the flavored water, the teas, the skincare products are amazing—argan oil for face, hair, $6.99 and lasts a while! They have a balm that I use on my dry feet, it’s ahhh-mazing, especially at only $3.99! Oh, a honey mango shave cream that smells like dessert!
You are so right about the nuts-dried fruit-so much goodness:)
The flowers and their cards=worth so much more than the price!

  26. I LOOOOVE Trader Joes!
We love the REGULAR cottage cheese … its so delicious (can’t compare with any other brand); my 3yo son loves so much, he wants to eat by the spoon from the container like a yogurt (lol)
2nd favorite: Quinoa and black bean tortilla chips … gluten free and taste soooo deliciooooooous!
with those I make a dish: I take the cottage cheese with shredded chicken a little bit of pesto and bacon bites, mix all in a bowl with a fork … there’s a delicious dip to eat with our favorite quinoa chips 😉
Tried … I’m sure you will love it!

  27. OMG YES. I am a TJ’s fanatic. I love:

    1. frozen jasmine rice- NO added ingredients and it’s AMAZING- tastes like fresh rice. Not the gross soggy kind like other brands. steams in 3 min. and seriously is the best time saver!!!
    2. dark choc. covered espresso beans (if you’re tired and need a pick me up this will do the trick- i used to eat them before tests- b/c no peeing!)
    3. Caulilfower pizza
    4. marcona almonds (seriously delish)
    5. NOT paleo but those pita crackers are the best crunchiest things ever.
    6. sweet potato chia seed crackers
    7. The goat cheese medallions- i love these b/c they are individually packaged for portion and freshness- instead of opening a whole package.
    8. their GF rolled oats- they cannot keep these in stock in my store. they are in a bag and people go nuts for them.

    the list goes on…love.

  28. I love the mire poix for soups and stews (diced carrot, celery and onion), the steamed beets, bruscetta – so easy to use for so many things, great shortcut, fire roasted peppers and onion along with the shaved beef (great for fajitas or philly cheese steaks)manzanilla olives, all the cheeses are cheaper than anywhere else, the chai tea protein shake, pre-cooked bacon, ricotta cheese (the only one I can find without additives), spindrifts, green and white with mint tea jug, arabiata sauce, omega trail mix, ginger tumeric tea. If you eat bread the pumpernickel bread is really good and one that is hard to find done properly. Sweet potato ribbons, healthy 8 veggies, oh and the gf brownie crisp coffee ice cream sandwiches. I used to really love their Hollandaise sauce but they discontinued it. 🙁

  29. Trader Joe’s Stir Fry Cauliflower Rice is a GAME changer! So delicious and easy to make after a workout. I pair mine every day with egg whites and sliced avocado on top with Trader Joe’s green dragon sauce. YUM!
