I’ve decided that this year is the year of visiting friends. Which means I want to visit San Diego, Washington, Portland and Pittsburgh. That’s all I have on my list so far but that also may include Austin as well. And then I’ll definitely be heading to Costa Rica, Jamaica and most likely Orlando. Ok, that’s all I have on my list. As I get older, all my friends keep branching out all over the place and it’s so easy to lose touch once families grow and priorities change. So I’m trying to make the step to visit more of my friends since they aren’t always able to with their own busy schedules. This is the first time in 3 years I haven’t been writing a book so I’m going to take full advantage to relishing in all the moments and all the travel.

Speaking of travel, I leave for Costa Rica today for my PaleOMG retreat! It’s a little fitness retreat I planned months and months ago and now it’s actually happening! Wooooooohoooooo! I seriously hate Colorado right now. The days of endless snow and ice everywhere has my feet freezing and me hating every second of every day. Positive 2016 just is not off to a great start. So I’m hoping this little exercise getaway will get me back to loving life and get me excited for the next few months of planning before our wedding is here in April! Maybe if I just go to Costa Rica then head to Orlando in February and find somewhere else warm to travel to March, I’ll forget about . I really need to win the powerball and just become a snow bird. Is that what they’re called? Just live in Florida in the winter and Colorado in the summer. I could do that.

You guys. I went to the rodeo for the first time (what felt like the first time since I don’t remember when I went as a child) and man, that sh*t is sad! I have mad respect for the people who do that and the cowboys who have the strength and the mind and the power to do all that. But watching a little calf sprint as fast as he can, just to get his neck snapped back or get flipped onto his back is so hard to watch. I decided to just walk around when that was happening. I know I know, I’ll eat beef but I’m annoyed with that. I just don’t tend to play with my food ya know?

Anywho, I have a plane to catch! Be sure to check the blog all week because even though I’m out of town, I still have all sorts of good stuff planned for you right here!

Bacon & Sausage Braised Cabbage

  • Yield: 4-6 1x
Scale

Ingredients

  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 1 yellow onion, diced
  • 1 head of cabbage, cored and thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt + 1/4 teaspoon for second round of cooking
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 spicy Italian chicken sausages (I used Brat Hans brand which are fully cooked), diced
  • roughly chopped parsley, to garnish

Instructions

  1. Place bacon in a dutch oven over medium heat. Cook until crispy, remove with a slotted spoon and set aside. Remove excess bacon fat, leaving behind about 3 tablespoons.
  2. Add onion and cook for 2-3 minutes, until translucent. Add cabbage, 1 teaspoon salt and garlic powder and mix with the onion. Then add broth and bay leaves and mix. Cover and let simmer for 15 minutes.
  3. Then add bacon and sausages to the dutch oven along with 1/4 teaspoon of salt, cover again and cook for another 15 minutes, stirring every couple minutes to keep from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
  4. Remove bay leaves before serving, garnish with fresh parsley!

Oh, Hi! I’m Juli.

I’m a food hoarder. And a really bad dancer. If you don’t know me well, you will probably not understand my humor. Therefore, I apologize ahead of time. Thanks for listening to my ramblings of my ever-changing life and trusting my kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is appreciated.

  1. Orlando? Are you going to do any book store visits while there? I live just a bit north of that in a tiny, beautiful town called St Augustine and would totally make the trip down if so!

    1. not sure yet. my fiance is traveling there so i was thinking about meeting him, but we don’t have solid plans yet. if i do go, i’ll definitely just stop by a bookstore and sign some copies there (it may be too late to get together an actual book signing)

  2. I want to know about Orlando too!! I’m a bit north of there in Gainesville so I agree with the above post, I hope it’s a work trip, I’ve wanted you to come here for a book tour! 🙂 I’m also getting married in April, I sometimes get nervous about how close it’s getting and making sure everything is ready.

  3. You should totally come to San Diego in March! It will be beautiful and warm and you won’t regret it! I go to a CF box in Pacific Beach and we always welcome drop-ins 🙂

    1. i’m sure you could! dutch oven just regulates the temperature a little better so just be sure to keep on eye on it so that it doesn’t burn on the bottom!

  4. I made this tonight with some andouille. It was amazing and perfect for a winter night. This will definitely go in the permanent recipe file.

  5. Don’t ever move to the mid-west…unless you really can be a snowbird. You, at least, get tons of sun. Here in the mid-west we get the crappy cold weather and the sun peeks out maybe once or twice a month!! I’m half Mexican and every time I walk outside I think to myself that I’m really meant to be closer to the equator. We are headed to Orlando/Clearwater for Spring Break and I am counting down the days. I love Florida in the spring (never, ever go in the summer unless you want to sweat your ass off).

Recipe looks amazing!! Thinking I can get my kids to eat cabbage by enticing them with bacon and sausage–brilliant!

  6. I made this last night for my fiance and me, and we LOVED it. I forgot to buy beef broth, so just used water instead, and it was still crazy flavorful and delicious. I used 2 bags of the pre-shredded cabbage from Trader Joe’s and we felt it was the perfect amount. Thank you for the fantastic recipe!

  7. Finally made this after salivating over it for a month! It was delicious and so easy! I LOVE your blog, thanks for being you ????

  8. Juli – being a cooked cabbage fan, i never thought i could love it more — until i tried this recipe. OMG it is the best i’ve ever had! I made it meatless and it was wonderful. Being a frequent cook (i try new recipes almost every week), I have to say that most of my favorite recipes are from you! SO glad I recently found your blog. Thanks for putting up with the craziness of the interwebs… Please keep rockin’ it in the kitchen! 😉

  9. I kept seeing this as a side on your Instagram so I finally made it & it is soooo good! Will become a regular in my home! Your recipes (blog & books) never disappoint! Keep up the great work!

  10. Been wanting to make this since you posted it and saw some organic cabbage today so thought I’d give it a go. So do delicious, think I ate half of it out of the pan before I served it! I didn’t have sausage but didn’t make it any less tasty.
Thanks for the awesome posts and workouts, always keeps me motivated.
Keep up the good work and can’t wait to see you in your wedding dress (congrats!)

  11. Very nice recipe. This has become a staple on a Paleo weight loss diet.
I live in Belgium and I use beef sausages made with fennel seeds from the local market. Its a great addition.
