I don’t know how I feel about St. Patrick’s Day. I think I’m part Irish, but I don’t really know. So I don’t really feel like I have the right to celebrate that day. It’s one of those holidays that seems to just give us another reason to drink without feeling guilty about it. Welp, I don’t really feel bad about drinking in the first place, so I don’t need a holiday to do so. BUT I wasn’t in the mood to drink this weekend after my little run in with gluten a week back. It seems as though my stomach has FINALLY healed itself after a full week of awful stomach aches and nervous feelings while doing box jumps during 13.2. Knowwhatimsayinknowwhatimsayin?! If you don’t, shame. But after staying in on Friday and having dinner with my parents on Saturday to deny the temptation of alcohol, I gave in.

I celebrated my stomach feeling better with a bloody mary on Sunday. That’s my favorite day of the week. Mostly because everyone is so fond of bloody marys that day. So I’m not the weird one who wants one. Like I have been when I’ve ordered a bloody on a Friday night. Which tasted like ketchup. I learned my lesson.

So guess what today brings? A new 21 Day Sugar Detox. It’s time to cut out the sugar, clean out the body, and see if I can shrink my bum just a little. Dominican Republic trip is coming up reaaaaal quick and that means bikinis. And bums out all over the place. And mine is really all over the place. So I’m doing my happy version of CrossFit, running, doing my abs, and cutting out the sugar. I totally feel like I’m in my senior year of college again, right before I went to Cancun. Except I’m way less tan at this point in my life. Tanning beds and I had a close relationship back then. I know, I know. I don’t need the lecture.

Anywho, I’m pumped to do this little sugar detox again. I absolutely loved it the first time. Well, after I got over the fourth day of getting dizzy and almost blacking out while working out. And coaching. And doing the dishes. And sitting on the toilet. That’s always a blast. Turns out, when you’re not eating fruit, you need to pack on the carbs in the amount of a crap ton of veggies. Learned that the hard way….

Who wants to join me in the 21 Day Sugar Detox?? Well, you totally should. I say that for selfish reasons. I need a support system. I already have Laura and my friend Kam doing it. But I need more. I ALWAYS NEED MORE.

PS- sorry these muffins aren’t sugar detox approved. I’ll work on that asap. Obviously.

There’s a new New Girl this week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m officially happy.

Strawberry Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins

  • Yield: 9 1x

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a food processor, puree bananas, eggs, dates, sunflower seed butter, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Then add flaxseed meal, coconut flour, baking soda and powder, and salt and puree once more.
  4. Add mixture to a mixing bowl then fold in the strawberries and chocolate chips.
  5. Line muffin tin with paper or silicone liners, plop mixture in the muffin liners, and bake for 25-30 minutes until cooked through. I know, long time. But that’s how it must be.
  6. Makes 8-9 muffins.

Oh, Hi! I’m Juli.

I’m a food hoarder. And a really bad dancer. If you don’t know me well, you will probably not understand my humor. Therefore, I apologize ahead of time. Thanks for listening to my ramblings of my ever-changing life and trusting my kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is appreciated.

  1. I’m in. Is coffee still allowed? I’ve been wanting to try a no sugar diet for a while. I guess that means u can’t have a little glass of wine, but I’ll survive.

  2. I tried doing the Whole 30… it lasted a Whole9…
I need tips to stay on track and omg with the dizziness and black outs! Thats how I broke out of the whole30, i carb loaded on bread and a brat. It was worth it though

  3. Would love to join on a full 21 day shot…problematic since EASTER and all that implies falls within!!!…But for a Catholic….doing the detox EXCEPT for Easter works since we’re still in Lent..full throttle….

Regarding Bloody Mary’s…What is the best Paleo Sunday Brunch item…among your myriad of fabulous recipes…to go with said Bloody Mary?
Any suggestions?…My Frenchy hubby misses “those kind” of made-in-USA brunches that we don’t seem to have much success at finding here on the French/Swiss border…

Love your blog….always lurk…but should comment more often about how consistently impressive you truly are…

  4. I’m on day 12 of my detox! I love how awesome I feel on it, but hate that before I start an extended period of time of strict eating I go all out and just destroy food! Don’t get me started on the pizza/red velvet cupcake combo….

  5. I’ve been contemplating a 21 DSD. I’m just too nervous! I have my fruit intake down to about half a banana a day (give or take an apple here and there), so I think I could do it but I just want the half a banana if I want the banana…

I have been bad about taking a piece of dark chocolate here and there though… oops.

    1. you’re allowed either one green-tipped banana or a green apple a day on the 21DSD… so it looks like you’ll be just fine.

  6. I just started my own sugar detox on Friday! Excited you’ll be joining in with me. (I totally read your past posts on sugar detoxing for advice/ideas before I started.)

  7. I am so excited to have found your blog! I’ve been reading for about a month now and have started “Cathartic Baking Thursdays” where I try out one of your “treat” recipes and then leave them with the trainers of my CrossFit gym after my 5:30am class on Fridays. They’re big fans, too. We’re starting a gym-wide paleo challenge today, so I’ll be sharing even more of your recipes with them.

I just started CrossFit back in January and am a little (i.e., a lot) frustrated that I’ve actually put on weight instead of losing it. They’ve said that that’ll go away eventually, but I’d like for “eventually” to be “now.” Did you experience this? And how long did it take you to feel like you were starting to get stronger and better during the wods? I’m attempting the open workouts, but was super frustrated this week when I only got through one round of 13.2 bc it took me 9 of the 10 minutes to get 75# over my head 5 times. Granted, that was my one rep max on Wednesday, but still.

Thanks so much for your posts! Keep them coming!

    1. I have just started crossfit too and have experienced weight gain too (not only muscle) – its frustrating… I do the WOD 5-6 times per week and eat clean 80% of the time – ANY help would be appreciated from all you crossfitters out there!

      1. I started Crossfit in June of 2011 because I had gained weight and running wasn’t taking it off. I gained 5 pounds in the first 3 weeks. Here I am almost 2 years later and I still haven’t lost weight, even though I have done two Paleo Challenges. However, I HAVE lost 7% points of bodyfat! I started at 30.1% and am now down to 23.4%. Would still like to lose weight and more bodyfat, but I feel good about how far I have come. Make sure you write down how much you are lifting so you can see how much stronger you are getting! It took me 6 months just to be able to feel “normal” doing a WOD

    2. I lost weight when I started crossfit, though I honestly didn’t have much to lose to start with. I would say only go 5 days per week tops, add in lots of slow exercise, too, such as hiking or walking your dogs/kids/cats, etc ;). Also, I stayed very strict paleo and low carb for the first 6 months or so. I even counted carbs for a few weeks to see where I was (tried to stay below 50gm/day). See if that helps! I’ve had to change my diet some over the last 3 years as I’ve started lifting heavier (i.e. added some post workout sweet potatoes), but this may be enough to help jump start fat loss!

    3. stop getting on the scale and take photos of yourself in the same sports bra and shorts every couple of months. at 47 years old my scale is staying the same but my muscle mass and lean mass are changing. i promise you will see a huge difference…the scale is a liar 🙂

  8. I am with you on the 21 DSD! I made it a whole lent detox though…day 36 L3. It has been great but HARD @ times! Timing is perfectly ending the day before my 30th Bday! Nothing like starting out the next decade on a good note! (BTW, learned about the detox from your site, thanks!!)

  9. I’m on day 18 of mine….going 75……hoping that will help sugar and I break up for good! Good luck with yours!

  10. I would love to join you…. I just haven’t bought the book or anything, been contemplating it for a while. any tips, main foods to eat, etc?? I need all the help I can get, sweets are always my downfall, I don’t really eat fruits though..

  11. Hey Juli,

I came across your site when i was searching for paleo ground beef recipes and had no idea I could make so many different kinds of delicious burgers that you have on your site! I’m new to paleo but starting to like it.

Anyways, i also wanted to give you a heads up that your “Ingredients List” and “Link to me” links at the top of your site are broken! They lead to 404 pages.

  12. Sugar Detox … I’m in! I need something after my vacation, my face hates me (obviously) and so do my clothes … This way, I can get both of them back! ;o)

  13. I’m doing a sugar detox right now too! Yay! Now I have someone to do it with and I’ll get to see some yummy recipes from you.

These muffins look fabulous. Darn sugar detox. These will be in my mouth once it’s over with.

  14. Way to go on the detox! I actually am doing a 30 jump start to paleo. Everyone keeps saying that I gotta commit for 30 days so here I go!

You know what? I would love to know about the recipe you use to make bloody Mary’s. that would be awesome!

Btw I am really excited for your cookbook and to eventually try this recipe!

  15. You and I are on the same page girl. Wedding in 6 mos and engagement photos in 2…. Ayayaya. Did I mention this is only my #1,382 attempt at the detox? Fun. Don’t skimp on the recipes! I’ll try to come up with some as well.

  16. I have problems with those blackouts and dizziness spells sometimes and I just do paleo. Is the cause the lack of sugar? I always like to know the scientific reason 🙂

  17. about to make these, but I don’t have dates! is there something I can substitute? or are they just there for sweetness?

  18. We must be on the same wave length chica. I just started the 21 DSD today as well! Given that this is my 1,382 attempt..I’m determined! My wedding in 6 mos and engagement photos in 2…ayayay. Don’t skimp on the recipes, I have one you might be interested in if you want to check it out!
    Good luck!

  19. I was thinking about doing the SCD intro diet (since I gave in and have had grains once in a while), maybe I can combine it with the 21 DSD !

  20. Hey Juli, I’d love to do the 21-day sugar detox with you. Bikini season will be here soon! Do you recommend buying the guide? I’ve been Paleo for a year, have read 8 or so books on the topic, read lots of blogs and listen to a few podcasts. I’m always looking to learn more and improve my health.

      1. Alright, thanks! I’ll buy it tonight and read up. I’m happy to support Diane. Her book was awesome, so this should be too. 🙂

  21. I do not believe your comments about needing to trim down for your vacation. Therefore you get NO sympathy from me. Sorry. The meatless quiche is AMAZING and I had the tex-mex hash for breakfast. Also delish.

  22. Hi Juli – I’ve been following your blog for the past couple of months as I have gone Paleo at the beginning of the year. Thank you for the stories and the recipes – keep it up. Question for you and others though, I’d say I am Paleo 80% of the time and have never done any detox. Is there a benefit to doing a 21 day detox, if you are going to go back afterward? Wouldn’t it make more sense to just get back on track eating Paleo in general? Just curious and trying to navigate the waters here. Thank you!

    1. the first time i did the detox, it was awesome because it broke my addiction to sugar AND it helped me figure out that i am very sensitive to sugar and broke out because of it. So i began to eat more vegetables and didn’t crave chocolate or fruit like i did before. After the 21 days, i didn’t eat sugar for another 2 weeks or so because i didn’t crave any. Now i rarely crave chocolate, even though I still eat it on occasion. In conclusion, the detox helped me stick to paleo more than i had before.

  23. i’m not sure what a sugar detox would be good for. we need carbs to survive. fiber, mainly insoluble fiber, is not good for us and since i’d probably have to eat a lot of fiber to feel full on the detox, i’d be so miserable.

      1. Ok great! I’m starting today because I had some wine last night lol. This is my first time so I’ll see how it goes.

  24. Samantha Sinko

Ive eaten paleo for about 3.5 months now and its been so good for my body. It also made me discover how extremely gluten intolerant I am. But I still love my fruit, occasional dark chocolate, and honey. So today was day one of my very first 21 day sugar detox. I went on here about 5 minutes ago and got that sorta creepy feeling when I saw you’re starting another round. I’m pretty excited. Going to Japan in 40 days so this will hopefully help me get that last leg of my slim down.

    1. Samantha did you purchase the book she posted here? I am thinking of trying this, just looking to hear some advice and or personal experiences. Thanks!

  25. I’ve followed your blog for a long time and made tons of your recipes, but I don’t think I’ve ever commented before.
Anyways, these are amazing! I had to make them as soon as I saw them. Love that they don’t use gobs of nut flours and that they’ve got the flax in there for the good omega3’s.
I did add 1/2 cup choc chips instead of a 1/4 just for extra delishisness (clearly I’m not on the sugar detox)! 🙂
I’ve already devoured 1 straight from the oven and I’m trying to keep myself from eating a second. We’ll see how long I can hold out!

  26. Nicole Franklin

Juli, these muffins are really great! I used the enjoy life dark chocolate chunks and even though I attempted to chop them, they were still a bit too sweet and overpowered the muffins. Next time I’ll make these without the chocolate (I know, blasphemy!) and add more fruit.

  27. It may be a perfect time to start another 21 day sugar detox after a week at the boyfriend’s apt aka cider or wine nearly nightly. I also indulged in a deliciously rich gluten free brownie for a friend’s birthday today at lunch. Also, SO EXCITED FOR NEW GIRL!

  28. Juli,
love your blog and recipes — SO good girl!
So what exactly does your “happy version of CrossFit and running” entail? How often are you working out lady? I could use some leaning out for the summer – I just started crossfit and have actually GAINED weight. Any tips to reverse this would be really appreciated! Like how often should i crossfit and should i be doing something else (ie cardio). Loving crossfit workouts, so am hoping to make it work for my bod:)
So the sugar detox is no fruit or sugar? how were your results last time you did it?
    Thanks in advance!
PS sweet scores on the open btw!

  29. Your blog is so awesome – although everyone tells you that so I am sure you don’t need to hear it again. I have been hearing so much about this detox so I finally took the plunge! Thanks for the encouragement!

  30. I really should. I already did half of one last month, though. *shoves another piece of dark chocolate in mouth*

  31. is a sugar detox a bad idea while I am nursing? Super hooked to dark chocolate right now and I don’t think my wee babe appreciates it.

  32. I made these today. I’m thinking I should have used riper bananas because mine turned out bland…the texture was great though. May add a touch of honey or maple next batch!

  33. I’m starting the detox tomorrow. Already fully Paleo but always CRAVE sugar…even too much of the good stuff I’ve found adds up! Glad I have a community of sugar-freaks to walk through the next 21 days of bliss with =) Thanks!

  34. Perfect timing, i just ate the last of my fruit in the house and I have just over 20 days left of the WholeLifeChallenge. Count me in for the Detox, gonna finish the challenge with a bang.

  35. ummmmm….I think I was standing pretty close to you during box jumps. 🙂 I’m in for a sugar detox. i need to unfat myself for sure.

  36. Yeah, I’m feeling a similar way aka not ready for bikini season. I’ve also been all over the place with my eating (hello donut holes at my meeting yesterday, ugh). So I’m doing another Whole30 in April. Getting my chocolate fix in on Easter before I begin haha.

  37. I made these muffins last night and they are soooo good! I have made about 7 of your dinners and 3 treats over the last two weeks and all I can say is: thank you! This is the first time I’ve eaten Paleo and not been bored to tears by my food. And I love how many treats and bread-like items you have that don’t include almond flour because I can’t stand that stuff! Anyways, thanks for the amazing meals and funny blogs!

  38. These were amazing!!! I took out the starwberries because I was looking for just banana bread and it hit the spot!! Thank you for sharing!!!

  39. I am so happy I found this website! Most of the one’s I have found use mostly almond flour/meal for their recipes. Finally, one that doesn’t!!!! Can’t wait to try some of your recipes, they look delicious!

  40. 15 days on Paleo and doing well. I am allergic to coconut any suggestions for subsitutionsa for coconut four, sugar and oil?

  41. Agree with Mia, may add some honey. Also used more baking powder and switched out coconut flour for more ground flax. I am wondering why, I don’t ever see anything about Muffin-in-a-minute on any paleo sites. I switch out the sugar for honey or maple syrup. Also, I add tsp of pumkin for added moisture.
