No ‘Clean it Up Monday’ post for you today!! Because I’m not in town to cook for you! So instead, I’m giving you a new wonderful cookbook to try out. You’re welcome.
I am VERY excited to do this book review. I literally tore open the package when I received it in the mail. I’ve been waiting and waiting for this book to come out since the day I found out that Megan and Brandon of Health Bent were making one. This website is very close to my heart because when I start eating paleo, they were one of the first websites I fell in love with and actually cooked from. I’m not one to cook from other websites, because I hate following directions, but their directions are simple and to the point, so I never had an excuse to not try the recipes.
Anywho, I couldn’t be happier with Primal Cravings by Megan and Brandon Keatley. Honestly. The photography looks great, especially since their is a picture for every recipe. The recipes are completely their style, simple but elegant and full of flavor. And information that is filled inside is incredibly helpful. That’s what always interested me so much about their blog. Their recipes were all so easy to make, but tasted like you had slaved for hours creating them. And the information they shared was always helpful for beginners to people who had eaten paleo for years. As you can tell, I kind of love them.
Here are some of the great things about this book:
- They don’t use any almond flour in it. I am not a huge fan of almond flour because it tends to make me sick, so I love that they removed it from their book. But they also removed almond flour from their recipes because it’s high omega-6 content, it’s expensive price, and so they could create even tastier recipes. I just love this. It’s cool to see different kinds of recipes outside the normal “almond flour box”.
- They included nutritional information in the back of the book for every recipe. That’s not really my thing because I don’t give a sh*t, BUT a lot of people do care and do want to know. So it’s a great addition to the book.
- They have metric conversions in the back of the book since the U.S. is so damn weird.
- They explain stuff in an easy to read format. They give great explanations about why paleo is good for us, why an 80/20 rule approach is a great one to follow and why teaching our bodies how to burn the correct food resources will lead to a healthier body.
- They teach you how to stock your kitchen.
- And they give you recipes to fill any need or want. From sweet to savory breakfast options, to pizza or meatballs, to cookies or gelato: whatever you want, they will have.
Let’s look at some of the gorgeous recipes inside.
I could just die. Just die. As you can see, their recipes look outstanding. I haven’t been able to decide which one I want to try first. Oh wait, I’ve already made one of their cookie recipes. Chocolate coconut scout cookies, to be exact. They were delish. And so simple. It took me only 5 minutes to whip them up and 12 minutes or so to bake them. Redonk. The boyfriend ate ’em up. But I want to make an actual entree. I’m coming home from DC today and all I want to do is cook. Especially for the boyfriend. I’m thinking the Cuban Burger first. Oh, and more cookies. Obviously.
Now go do yourself a favor, and buy it. I can promise, pinky swear that you will love the book itself, love the recipes that hide away inside, and love the amazing recipes you trick people into thinking are not paleo. Your life is about to change with this book.
I was just looking for inspiration for Meatless Monday/Paleo dinner. Think this will do the trick nicely, thank you!
I feel about your website the way you feel about Megan and Brandon’s. Yours was one of the first that I started cooking from when I went Paleo. Keep up the great posts and thank you for this cookbook review!
I just bought this book and cannot wait for the recipes. Great blog!
Made the Cuban burger (sans plantain “bun”, since I didn’t feel like grocery shopping that day)–it was good! I’m super SUPER excited to try more recipes (sausage and egg cups!) on my next weekend off. 😀
Damn you… I said I wasn’t going to buy any more cookbooks – because my addiction was getting out of hand – and then you have to go and entice me yet again.
🙂 Can’t wait to get it!!!
I made those same coconut cookies last night (could the ingredient list get any simpler? wow!) and even my non-paleo husband snarfed up a bunch of them. I also made their gelatin using grass fed gelatin powder. YUM!
I have plans for the cuban stuff too. Mmmm…soooooon…
Mine just arrived today, can’t wait to get cooking!!!!
I bought this book and the first thing I tried was the Cuban Burgers – however, I only got as far as preparing the plantain ‘buns’ and ate them all before every getting around to the burger part.
Thanks for the review. I will definitely be buying this…my first paleo cookbook tho I have been paleo for over a year. I have a question/dilemma, which you or someone else may be able to help me with. I am trying to urge my sister and her husband to go paleo, and I would like to buy them a cookbook that will help. For newbies, do you have a suggestion or a preference for a cookbook? Do you think this cookbook is a good one for newbies, or would you suggest another? Thanks a million.
Juli, like you fell in love with the author of this book when you first started eating paleo is the same way I feel about you and your website!! You are truly inspiring and I have to say…… I’m absolutely in love with cooking these days!!! Just wanted to say thank you and look forward to more amazing recipes and entertaining blogs!!! ;)))))
