Holy moly oly! It has been a crazy past two days of traveling to San Francisco. I’m out here right now touring the Stitch Fix headquarters and facilities to see how such an amazing and ever-growing company is run! It’s insanity. This company started about 5 years ago and has expanded by so much and even has a mens line that just came out. But all that info is for another blog post next week when I have some cool photos to show you. So for now…let’s talk about my travel experience on Tuesday.
What the f*ck is wrong with people. Let’s just start with that. I’m not sure where people were raised or if they just do not care about hygiene, but where I’m from, you’re polite, you’re not totally disgusting, and you’re aware of the world around. But in airplanes, that just doesn’t seem to be the case. Exhibit A: While flying on Tuesday afternoon, I noticed a rather pungent smell. Like vinegar. But you know when something smells awful on a flight, you know it’s just most likely McDonald’s…because it’s poison. Well, I smelled this vinegar-type smell and automatically thought sandwich, someone is just grubbing down on a sandwich. And I moved on to listening to the podcast Serial and minding my own business. But when I felt a bump on my elbow that was on the arm rest, I glanced down to find A BARE FOOT! And no, it was not a f*cking pedicured well-to-do foot. It was a vinegar-smelling, callused-line, toenail-broken foot. That touched me. That sandwich vinegar smell that I was smelling was a human being. And believe me, I’m not saying my feet smell any better, but I’m sure AF not taking off my shoes and putting my feet up where someone else is sitting. Because I’m not disgusting. And I use my brain.
That being said, I’m also not a person who would make a scene about it. I don’t want to make a person feel embarrassed by screaming YOURESODISGUSTINGIHATEYOUSOMUCH or by poking his foot and asking what is wrong with him. So I went about my business…snapchatting my disgusting experience like any polite person would do…and prayed for the flight to land. Then once I arrived in the SF airport, I noticed a woman walking barefoot carrying her flip flops. At this point, I’ve been in 2 airports in uncomfortable booties and I’m not taking my swollen feet out of my shoes on or off the airplane. You know where I took my shoes off? In my hotel room, by myself. Like a normal person would do. I just seriously still can’t believe this dude. And from what I could tell, he wasn’t even drunk. Just a sober dude, being disgusting. I can’t effing even.
On a lighter note, the weather has been wonderful in San Francisco. Of course, it’s a live circus out there…I did see a guy get punched and knocked out last night. What an interesting place. BUT. speaking of wonderful (2 sentences ago), you MUST try this recipe. I recently cut out eggs from my diet (still eating them once in a while, if I’m out to breakfast or traveling) just because my skin seems to break out when I eat them. SO that leaves me needing to get creative in the morning. Luckily, Mina has an amazing Moroccan shakshuka sauce that makes meal prep easier than ever. And this meal is so stupid easy. Make it in big batches and take it on the go! It’s delightful!
5 Ingredient Egg-Free Shashuka Breakfast Bowls
- Yield: 3 1x
Ingredients
- 2 sweet potatoes, diced
- 2 tablespoon ghee, melted
- pinch of salt
- 1 pound breakfast sausage
- 1 jar of Mina’s Shakshuka Sauce
- 4 cups thinly sliced kale*
- just a little bit of salt
- green onions, for garnish
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place diced sweet potatoes on the sheet then toss with melted ghee and a sprinkle of salt. Place in oven to bake for about 30 minutes, until sweet potatoes are slightly crispy yet soft on the inside.
- While sweet potatoes are cooking, place breakfast sausage in a large saute pan over medium heat. Break up with a wood spatula into small pieces, until no pink remains and sausage becomes slightly crispy. Then add the jar of shakshuka sauce along with kale and mix to combine. Let simmer for about 10 minutes, until kale is soft and cooked through. Sprinkle with a little bit of salt then mix.
- Serve a scoop of sweet potatoes with a scoop of the breakfast sausage mixture on top and freshly sliced green onions for garnish!
Notes
*The thinner you slice the kale, the better. And the faster it will cook and really mix well into the dish

Yummm!!! I am wanting to plan a trip to Denver in November. Could you recommend some restaurants that have more GF/paleo options? Also any advice on what to do in Denver is always welcomed 😉 Love your blog!

As a total North African/Middle East foodie, I wasn’t sure how I felt about shakshuka with no eggs…but this recipe still looks stellar and I can’t WAIT to try it. Bless you for bringing delicious foreign foods to the paleo world! (And thanks for sharing about Mina’s–I always love a good pre-made sauce that isn’t totally terrible for you!)
Also, planes are a sure-fire way to see the worst side of humanity. Period. My sympathies!
i felt the same way, but it’s so so good even without the eggs!
What can I do if I don’t have the sauce today but want to make it? I don’t want to drag two kids to a store for it. Any other options?
not really, not for a moroccan style sauce. you can look up other sauces on my blog though
OMG JULI!!!! I swear this EXACT thing happened to me on my flight back from Vegas over Labor Day weekend. I paid extra for my seat and then this nutball thought it was a genius idea to not only take his darn flipflops off, but then was sticking them all over his seat and kept them like 1 inch from my legs. I was nauseated the whole time. I especially enjoyed his hour of snoring so loudly it woke me up…with headphones on. On a positive, noneffingdisgusting note- I can’t wait to try this bowl. Never heard of shashuka sauce, but I’m stoked to try!!!
i can’t believe people!!!! who does that?!?!
great that you have a non-egg recipe as I’m cutting it out myself due to skin problems too!
What kind of. Real fast sasauge did you use?
i make my own from my third cookbook – Juli Bauer’s Paleo Cookbook
I am so excited to try this! It looks AMAZING. I might also eat it for dinner. I’m an adult, right? I can eat breakfast for dinner if I want to, I’m the one cooking!
Also just wanted to say I bought your cookbook last week and made the jalapeno popper chicken chili for my parents last night, and it was a HUGE hit, we all loved it so much, and it makes such a nice big batch that even after my father chowed DOWN on it there were still some leftovers for me! I am making another batch this weekend to freeze, and I am going to make the buffalo chicken casserole as soon as I remember to thaw my freaking chicken, OMG.
I just wanted to say thank you so much for all the hard work you do cooking and baking and testing these recipes, and making such a beautiful book to put them in. They are so delicious, and even the fancy ones aren’t so intimidating that I’m afraid to try them (even if, as I am sure you notice, the first one I tried was the “throw all these things in the slow cooker and leave for eight hours” one.
My worst flight experience happened a year or so ago when a younger couple sitting in the row in front of me changed their baby’s #2 diaper on the tray tables. I didn’t know the guy I was sitting next to but we both had our noses in our shirts and would give another the occasional glance of “please don’t puke, because if you do, I will too.” I couldn’t believe it. They just wrapped it up in like a plastic grocery bag and slapped the tray tables back up like it was no big deal. At least they were pretty quick about it, but seriously who does that?!
I’ve been looking for egg-free breakfasts too- I don’t know that it’s been helping or not; just an experiment. I’m definitely going to make a big batch of this this weekend. Looks pretty delish!!
Where do you find white sweet potatoes?
whole foods or sprouts
Do you know if Sprouts carries that Mina sauce? I’d love to try this recipe since my doctor has cut eggs out of my diet and I love me some sweet potatoes 🙂
i don’t, i get mine online!
