You guys. I’m stuck. Summer is coming, it’s just around the corner. And my legs don’t fit into shorts. I feel like I run into this problem every year. But I’m right there again, and frustrated about it. I left the mall the other day pretty upset. It just blows to get to a point that you’re comfortable in your own skin, then an article of clothing dictates how you feel. So instead of pouting, I bought skirts. Skirts always fit. My inner thighs may sweat and chafe but at least I fit in skirts. Have you found a certain kind of shorts that fit you? More so, that fit the butt and back of the legs? Help me out hereeeee.

I love scarves. All winter long and all sumer long. That is all.

I absolutely adore this top. It is seriously so flattering on any figure and so incredibly comfortable. But these jeans, these jeans are the greatest. I’ve worn these exact pair but in plum, and since they are little bit more high waisted, the never move. I never have to pull them up or mess with them, they just stay in place, happy as can be.

Back to the shorts point. Here’s one of the skirts I bought in order to not cry over spilled milk. This one is super soft but still keeps everything snug. I wore this outfit all day running errands but by the end of the night, I was over booties so I switched to black flats for a little dinner with some friends. Dress it up, dress it down.

Another skirt! Who needs shorts when you can wear skirts all sumer long? Right? Right! That means I need to find a lot more skirts. Remember how I told you I would show you different ways to wear crop tops? Doing it again! If you’re not looking to show much tummy but still like the crop top look, wear a crop top with a high waisted skirt like this look! You can show as little or as much as you want!

Oh, Hi! I’m Juli.

I’m a food hoarder. And a really bad dancer. If you don’t know me well, you will probably not understand my humor. Therefore, I apologize ahead of time. Thanks for listening to my ramblings of my ever-changing life and trusting my kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is appreciated.

  1. Yes, skirts ftw! But, the jogger shorts from Gap are awesome and Body glide keeps the chafing at bay when wearing skirts.

  2. I read your blog but never comment. Today I had to.

I’m fat and old enough to be your mother. You are a lovely young woman with a fantastic, fit body. To hell with shorts! There is no reason for you to feel badly about yourself because of how a manufacturer cuts or designs their products (shorts).

Your blog is inspiring, your ensembles are always flattering and attractive and you look incredible. Skirts are a great idea, and I love the looks you come up with!

  3. Hey Girl!
I totally get you about the shorts. Thunder Thighs over here!! I hate summer for this EXACT reason. Nothing ever fits right! And if i wear a skirt or dress then we have a chafing sweating mess! (TMI?). I’m considering oiling my inner thighs with vaseline so I can wear a maxi dress for longer than 3 hours without chafing (kidding…maybe?). Can’t wait to see more of your styles! PS. Saw you wear those sole society backless booties….bought them 5 minutes later. LOVE.

    1. A tip from a thick thigh woman to another….buy a pair of shorts to wear under your dresses. There are several brands and different materials. I bought a pair from Jockey and they are a nice slick fabric so the dress doesn’t stick to it. I adore them!! No sticky thighs….no chafing….it’s life changing! Check it out!

      1. 100% agree with this. I’m older (turned 49 on 5/15), so everything I wear dress/skirt wise is pretty loose, but shorts just feel so blame good under there!

  4. Two words…Jockies Skimmies. They are a godsend to chub rub when wearing skirts. They are light weight but help with the chafing issue.

  5. Just to clarify my previous comment…you are NOT chubby. I was trying to be funny but after it posted and I reread it, I didn’t want my comment to be misinterpreted 🙂

  6. I *almost* despise summer purely due to the fact that finding a decent pair of shorts kills me. I don’t see how other girls manage this…. Anyway, was shopping for vaca and happened upon Jessica Simpson brand shorts at Dillard’s. THEY ARE SO SOFT. They are also a reasonable length and don’t ride up your wooha, so I bought them in multiple colors. Let this be a message of hope… It took me 26 yrs, but I finally found some shorts that I actually like! Also, for workout/active shorts, I really like my Nike and Under Armor training shorts with the spandex-ish under layer – a life saver for mat exercise and chafing!

  7. I’ve been reading your blog forever and never comment but had to today! I absolutely love that purple skirt! And it looks fabulous on you. And I have to say, I love your fashion posts (probably even more than the food ones). Thanks for sharing!

  8. Rag and bone boyfriend shorts have saved me! They are pricey, but worth it if you have athletic legs and a small waist! Also, Anine Bing boyfriend shorts work well!

  9. After switching my wardrobe, I realized that NONE of my shorts from last summer fit! Not quite a shocker, because I have been trying to gain weight and muscle. But trying to put them on…not good for the trying-to-gain-new-body-confidence department. So, I too have abandoned all notions of shorts for this summer in favor of skirts. No shorts in the gym either, because the lighting is always terrible! Why use bad lighting…I digress…back to SKIRTS! and DRESSES!
…and…every time I try shorts and don’t like the way it looks, I am going to try to stop looking at my legs and starting thinking how much stronger I am now.

  10. I rarely comment here, love your style of writing, and your style! 🙂 Some great advice I’ve been given about finding a great fit in clothes: buy a size that fits the largest part of you and get the rest of it tailored.

  11. Old Navy shorts I swear by them! They’re super cheap-maybe not the highest quality but I swear by them as a crossfitter and a girl with a but!

  12. I was having the same problem with shorts (right after I finished replacing all my jeans this winter too). They were all too small in the butt and thighs when I dug them out this year. I found some I really really like by Jessica Simpson called Indigo Obsession. On sale at Macy’s for only $20 and in two different lengths that I saw. They are denim but feel like pajama pant material. I like that they are small in the hips and have a lot of stretch in the butt/thigh area. Anyways, I really think you will like them. Also: love seeing all your cute outfits every week! I especially like that purple skirt in the last outfit.

  13. I am so with you on the whole shorts issue. I hate going from feeling awesome about my body to a puddle of insecurity in a random dressing room. Not a good look for anyone. Skirts are definitely where it’s at for girls with thighs and booty!

  14. I’m struggling with the same issue as well, and resorting to the same fix. Bring on the skirts! It’s unfortunate, because I actually do like the shorts I have at home. If you find a pair that fits well, can you recommend them on here?

Love the skirts you’ve picked up so far 🙂

  15. Juli, that last outfit is absolutely incredible, I just bought everything because I love it so much 🙂 I found your blog in January and your sense of humor and incredible recipes have helped me easily transition into a happy, healthy paleo life!! Thank you, thank you, thank you <3

  16. GIRL. THIS IS THE STORY OF MY LIFE WITH SHORTS. But you know what I realized this year? If women’s shorts are made for non-muscular ladies, why not try men’s style shorts? Best. Decision. Ever. Try Chubbies (chubbies.com) in a size small and Columbia Women’s Coral Point II Short. Both come in fun colors AND fit my butt and fit quads.

  17. This is hilarious how many of us hate shorts! I had no idea – thought it was just me. Skirts are better and I live in them in summer, but sometimes you just want to throw on a pair of cute shorts. Right? For skirts, I live for Susana Monaco. I have a couple of her slim mini skirts in black and wear them constantly. They are pricey but seriously look the same as the day I bought them. The fabric and fit are perfection. That being said, just today I ventured into Gap and left with a pair of black cut off shorts. They were cute and seemed like they might work. They sort of have this slouchy vibe and the leg is pretty wide. I think they are meant to be worn slung a little low on the hip. We shall see.

  18. I never comment but I need those jeans! Do they run small/ large? How do they compare to other jeans with respect to sizing ? As a fellow cross fitter it’s impossible to find jeans that are snug but not too snug, and have a small waist. Please tell me your ways!

Also re shorts: I feel you! I have luck in shorts that have the “cutoff” bottom- like the fake ripped. I love 7 for mankind shorts- but I’m short so they’re not too short for me. I wait for them to go on gilt or other deal sites. Never go w shorts w cuffs or rolled bottoms. The “cutoff” has a wider leg opening. I also have bought cheaper American eagle shorts, go up a size and get the waist taken in.

  19. Skorts!! Check out Athleta, they have tons of cute skirts, they look like skirts with built in breathable attached shorts. No thigh chafe, look good!!

  20. Lush makes a powder called Silky Underwear that you rub into your inner thighs when you wear skirts. Eliminates the sweating and chafing. The powder is less than $10 and lasts forever. I’ve had luck using bsby powder as well. I can’t find shorts that that flatter my butt so I’m all about skirts 🙂

    1. i love lush!! i’ll definitely be getting that! i heard they have an awesome lip exfoliator, so I will be going in for both those things now! thanks for the recommendation!

  21. I hate shopping for shorts bc while I am only 29, I still want to wear shorts bc dang it I busted my butt to get down to size after havING 3 kids in 3yrs. I want shorts where my hiney doesn’t hang out when I am standing much less chasing my 4, 2, and 1 yr old around. I have found that American Eagle midi shorts fit great! Long enough for my age but short enough that they don’t look awkward on me.

  22. My not so secret to avoid thigh rub is to put a little deodarant on my inner thighs 🙂 I wear a lot more skirts and dresses after I figured that out!

  23. Gurl YES with the shorts issue. Apparently my thighs are like three sizes bigger than my waist, according to these shorts manufacturers. It makes no sense when you remember that so many women (see comments above) have the same issue… blerg. I will have to try some of the brands suggested here. In the meantime, know that you’re not alone, but also and MORE IMPORTANTLY, your body is rocking and you’re absolutely perfect just as you are.

  24. If your thighs don’t fit in the shorts…there is something wrong with the shorts! You have fabulous legs!!

  25. Kohl’s Union Bay shorts in the junior section!! Fit me perfect and we are mid squat cycle at the gym and my thighs show it!

  26. I love Silver brand jeans and shorts! They make a curvy through hip and thigh style that fits my butt and legs which is awesome. As for the chafing, whenever i wear a skirt or short shorts i apply a layer of deoderant to my thighs. I know it sounds weird but the glide beautifully and it elminates any sweating the may occur. Loved all the outfits and let me know if you find the perfect shorts 🙂

  27. My sense of style is so different from yours, but I still love seeing your fashion posts. They’re interesting and realistic – you love dressing up and clothes and accessories, but you wear the same types of pants again and again (just as I do, although mine are different) and you look fabulous every time! It shows the value of having some basics and then mix-and-match accessories.

I’m very curious about wearing that unusual ring – does it fall off all the time? Very interesting!

    1. I think you gotta find those perfect pairs of jeans that fit the best and stick with them! It’s definitely all about mixing and matching! Glad you enjoy the posts!! As for the ring, it doesn’t fall off at all actually!

  28. I just found the best shorts that are crazy cheap at h&m that fit my huge quads and my smaller hips/waist.

  29. I love the skirts! I need some new sunglasses. Hard to find ones that look great with my face shape lol.

  30. A little late here, but catching up on your posts from the last few weeks. I wear skorts ALL the time. I highly recommend. I get them at Athleta or anywhere else I can find them (Amazon has a lot). A lot of them are made for golfers, so they don’t always look like athletic gear. I wear them to work a lot too.

  31. Juli, I agree with many of the other comments above – you have fabulous legs and ought to be proud and show them off!
So on that same note, it’s the clothes with the issues, not you. Every mfr has different patterns for all body sizes and shapes and none of them seem the same. That’s why I’m lazing around today in Old Navy size 8 jean skirt, but yesterday was in a size 0 pencil skirt from who knows where. Do you have a good tailor or seamstress? I finally hit 5′-1″ by age 27, but that still meant my seamstress and I would have a long and happy relationship, because almost nothing-even petite-fits correctly. This also means the overall cost of most clothing I buy due to adding tailoring is higher (sad face). I buy whatever fits the best and she adjusts as necessary. Have a chat with her to see how she recommends buying. I would think she’d have you size up your shorts (& cut the tag out if you don’t want to see any numbers) so they fit your rear and thighs, and I’m guessing the waist will be too big at that point, so she’ll take in the waist and taper it at the seams so it’s well-fitted. I’m sure they will be perfect after you get them back!
