Happy Friday, everyone!! It’s a special Friday because I’m stressed as old balls with this upcoming book release and book tour. So when I say special, I mean zits, it’s a zit kind of Friday. I haven’t broken out in probably a year now, but my body is saying, “Calm the f*ck down, Juli, or we will punish you.” A the punishment is happening. I feel like a teenager again. Who am I kidding, I feel like a 24 year old again. Damn acne. I CURSE THE DAY YOU WERE BORN. Anyone know what movie that’s from?
Anywho, I want to tell you about something special. Because my publisher is the best publisher ever, they have agreed to do something pretty damn cool. In honor of celebrating the release of my newest baby Juli Bauer’s Paleo Cookbook, I also want to celebrate my little baby who’s been the greatest joy in my life: my little Jackson. Not all animals are as lucky as him to have a loving home. So to bring light to some of those who aren’t as fortunate as him, my publisher and I wanted to do something really special, I mean REALLY special!
If you preorder a copy of my new cookbook between now and midnight on August 17, my publisher will donate 100 percent of their profit from those orders to an animal charity of my choice. I’ve been looking into different charities and I’m still trying to figure out which one would be the perfect fit but I will definitely keep you updated.

Having Jackson in my life has brought me so much joy and so many amazing memories, that I want to make sure that is possible for other dogs and families. Now let’s get started on some outfits! As I said before, I head out on book tour next week. And since I’ll be heading on the road for 12 or 13 days, I have A LOT of outfits planned. And zit cream bottles to pack. I’ll need regular day outfits, workout outfits, book tour outfits, and a sh*t ton of shoes. Below this weeks outfits I’ll be sharing exactly what I’ll be packing in my suitcase, first for my day-to-day outfit and then what I have planned for book tour outfits!
I just recently got this jacket because I wanted something light to transition from summer to fall and because I wanted something that was longer. Most of my jackets go to my waist or middle of the butt, but I don’t have any light, long ones. When I found this jacket online, I was worried that it was going to be pretty crap-tastic since it was so cheap, but it really isn’t! It’s a great material that I will be taking with me on a plan rides and for evenings out in every city on book tour!

We had one rainy, gloomy and cool day in Colorado this week and it reminded me that HOLY SH*T, it’s September soon. Which means I will be dreaming of pumpkin spice and baking and outfits will soon be long sleeve. Hence why the pieces I’m sharing with you this week are perfect transitional outfits to help you welcome fall with open arms. This top is from 3 years ago but I found it again! along with a short sleeve AND a tank top, if you’re just not ready to take fall on quite yet!

This top is a tank that I will definitely be bringing on book tour with me. Because you can dress it up for an out to dinner night or just wear it with a comfy pair of jeans and some flats. It’s pretty thin and cuts up closer towards the neck so it reveals a little more skin in all the right places. I just love this top! I wish they had more colors because I would totally buy more!

While I’m packing my suitcase for book tour, I’m thinking about staying as comfortable as possible. That means lots of flats, flip flops, t-shirts, dresses and jeans. I plan on only being uncomfortable while doing a book signing. I’m not even going to act like I prefer to wear heels to flats. That would be a lie. So here’s what you’ll be seeing in my “comfy clothes” side of the suitcase.
For the uncomfortable side, you’ll be finding book tour outfits. Still haven’t fully decided which outfit I’m going to wear to which city and I’m still figuring out shoes, but here’s an idea of what you’ll be seeing in some of the cities.

Also, just wanted to commend you and/or your publisher for offering such a great sample segment of the book on Amazon…little things like that really make a difference when trying to get the feel of a book before you buy it!

Long time reader of your website, first time commenter. I love your blog and fully intend on buying your cookbook but I just have to comment on the publishers donation to an animal charity. I don’t mean to snark but it’s just really bothering me that you’re using the animal charity donation as an incentive to buy your book when you got Jackson from a breeder, and not a shelter/rescue organization. I have no issue with your decision to get him from a breeder vs a rescue but now it just seems like a hypocritical ploy to get people to buy your book. I’m glad you are bringing awareness to animals in need of loving homes, I just wish it wasn’t attached to people buying your book. Again, I don’t mean to snark, I truly do love your blog but this is just disappointing.
Nancy, I totally see where you’re coming from and why you would feel that way. First off, while I looked for a French bulldog puppy for 6 months, there were none up for adoption anywhere, doesn’t mean that I wouldn’t rather adopt. Would you rather me send money to the breeder I used? That doesn’t seem like a very helpful or charitable thing to do. So when you say that I’m being hypocritical, I’m just trying to give back to the dogs that don’t have a home, unlike the ones at my breeder that obviously do. There is no ploy happening here. I’m saying if you purchase my book right now, my publisher is giving back. Think about the company Toms: for every pair of shoe you buy, they give a pair of shoes to someone in need. Do you think of that company as a ploy? I definitely don’t. In the end, I totally see where you are coming from and sorry you felt that way, it was not my intention. I just hope to sell books that may change people’s lives for the better and give back a little bit along the way.
I appreciate your response. The difference between you and Tom’s is that Blake Mycoskie (founder of Tom’s) created a for profit business based on his already charitable involvement in providing shoes for children in need across the world. The creation of his for profit business allowed an indefinite stream of giving rather than creating a non-profit organization that was dependent on donations and potentially unsustainable. This is exactly my point. If you were previously bringing awareness to rescue organizations or dogs in need of loving homes, I wouldn’t have an issue with your publishers proceeds being donated. The fact that you are now bringing awareness to an issue many people care about, but you do not practice yourself, as an incentive to buy your book just doesn’t feel right. Either way, I’m thrilled that these proceeds will go to a deserving organization and perhaps we just agree to disagree.
i think you are more so upset with the fact that i didn’t adopt my own dog and that’s a personal issue. at the end of the day, all dogs need a home, just because they come from a breeder doesn’t make them any less lovable or needed. please don’t blast our donation just because you don’t agree with how i got my own dog. you wouldn’t be complaining about me giving to a childrens-in-need charity even though i’ve mentioned many times that i don’t like children. i’m incredibly excited about this donation and i’m so glad so many others are excited as well.
Not to beat a dead horse but I really don’t care that you got Jackson from a breeder. My immediate family members have gotten pets from breeders and have also adopted. I truly have no judgment either way. I agree, all dogs need a home. My point, and maybe I’m not being clear, is the fact that it appears that you are using it as a method to sell more books. Again, I have purchased all of your books to date and I plan on purchasing this one. I don’t think you’re an evil person, I just wanted to point out that it wasn’t sitting right with me and maybe with more of your readers as well.

Nancy, I have to admit I have been thinking the same thing that you have addressed in your post.I do also appreciate the fact that Juli addressed it. Ummmm, I didn’t know Juli didn’t like children. Lol. I must have missed that in prior blog post, but honestly I’m not a fan either. I’m involved in dog rescue and fostering so obviously I am pro #adoptdontshop and I am a fan of the blog and especially the Fashion Friday post but like Nancy I did find the support of an animal charity hypocritical because Jackson came from a breeder. In the end choosing a breeder or rescue is a personal decision.

I don’t care who you donate too. We both said we enjoy your blog but we’re also entitled to our opinions. That’s all!
Unfortunately, I think you’re missing our point. It’s not the donation that bothers us, it’s the fact that you are also benefiting from this cause in which you do not personally support. The other giveaways you have done to sell your book have been for kitchen appliances, paleo food items, etc. which you actually use and why those giveaways didn’t both us. The fact that you have never mentioned/supported an animal rescue prior to trying to sell copies of your book is what seems disingenuous.
Nancy, I don’t think that the donation strategy is hypocritical at all. Firstly, just because Juli was looking for a specific type of do which was not available for adoption, does not make her hypocritical for shopping with a breeder then later wishing to help adoptive pets. (Although do I recall that Jackson was a gift from the man in your life? In which case, good for him for knowing what you want!) I purchased one of my horses the old-fashioned way, and adopted the other. I did what was right at the time.
It sounds like your big beef is that somehow she and the publisher are “tricking” people into buying the book just because they’re going to give the profits to animals in need. I think Juli thinks more highly of the intelligence of us, her readers, than that – do you seriously think that someone who was not otherwise going to buy the book will suddenly place an order? If they care that much about giving to needy pets, they can just make a straight-up donation. Instead, this is a nice chance for someone who’s been planning to buy it, thinking “oh I’ll buy it when I get a chance” to do a little good and get their book too.
I’m actually less offended by this, than I am bummed when the giveaways require social media that I don’t use. But at the end of the day, that’s Juli’s choice, and I will continue to enjoy her blog and books anyway. Thanks for the great stuff, Juli, and enjoy the book tour! Sorry you won’t be coming out my way (Hartford CT area) maybe next time!

You know, I don’t mind if your publisher is using the charitable donation angle to sell more books, because I do think that your book will help people, and I (and I’m sure most of your regular readers feel this way) want you to succeed. I always see you as someone who shows us what is possible with nutrition, health, cooking and even fashion. Keep it up, you’re inspiring a whole lot of people.

Love that you and your publisher are using this opportunity to donate to a great cause! As someone who was looking for non-shedding and hypoallergenic dogs, I was not able to adopt from a shelter and got my “doggie daughters” from a breeder as well. That doesn’t mean you can’t try to help dogs that are in shelters! I mean really, you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I’ll be ordering my copy today!

In fact, I just finished making a quadruple batch of your chocolate caramel coffee cake for a family get together this weekend! And, my kids were so disappointed to hear there weren’t any smoky bacon chili leftovers last night for dinner 🙂
If I can, I would to recommend a rescue organization that is in dire need of funds. We have rescued three dogs from them. I don’t want to do it unless you say it’s okay, you will probably get a lot of requests. This one is owned by a couple in their late 50s and have poured their hearts, souls and retirement funds into taking care of the dogs they save. They sacrifice more than most people could ever imagine, and I hate they struggle so much. They aren’t local, so we can’t help physically, but we help with fundraisers. My 10 yr old daughter has now given up 2 spring breaks to have a bake sale for them!
I understand if you don’t want any suggestions, but I had to ask!
Y’all WHO CARES if it is hypocritical, not sitting right, she didn’t adopt, etc. The bottom line is that she is using her MAJOR accomplishment of writing and selling a book to BENEFIT an animal charity. What would be more hypocritical (though I think we’re using the word incorrectly at this point) would be to talk about how much she loves animals and give/do nothing which MOST people do. Also, just because she’s relating her love of her dog with helping an animal charity does not make her a hypocrite; it makes her generous. If it doesn’t sit well with you, don’t preorder. We should be grateful that she and her publisher are using her book to help animals. If this helps her sell books, kudos to her for a great idea. And Juli I adore your outfits and wish I could see you on your book tour. I especially love the black and white “over the top” one you posted the other day with the skirt and cropped top, SO CUTE. katy, you’re awesome. thank you so much for you kindness and positivity. i hosted 6 giveaways in hopes of getting people excited about my book and no one ever complained once about me giving away free stuff while promoting my book at the same time, but they complain about me giving money to a good cause. sucks. so thanks for being so great!
