The whole reason I even began to dabble in fashion was because of how empowering it was. I first found CrossFit which truly changed my viewpoint on beauty, then I found Paleo which flipped my world upside down when it came to how we should actually be eating, and then came fashion. As CrossFit and Paleo slowly made me a more confident, happy and thriving human being, fashion was that third puzzle piece. It made me feel truly empowered. Which is so odd. How can a pair of pants or a dress or a good pair of shoes empower you? How can those simple pieces of clothing make you walk with your head held higher or make you feel like you can conquer your day? I don’t know the exact answer, but I do know that finding that perfect little sweater dress with a slit up the side made feel like a million bucks the other day. And while I wore it, I had my little top knot head held higher than ever.

This grey sweater dress is all about sophistication and sexiness all rolled into one. Just like I mentioned last week on the blog, fall doesn’t have to be all about baggy clothes and covering up. You can show a little skin while staying warm and cozy. This dress is the perfect lightweight yet warm material that is stretchy to help fit your body like a glove. Show off your curves in this dress and throw on a faux leather jacket at night to look put together while still comfortable. And don’t be afraid to show off a little leg that you’ve been working so hard on during the summer in the gym and in the kitchen!
Here’s a peek at a more sweater dresses for fall!
But if showing off a little leg isn’t your style, then show off with your shoes! These faux-suede deep green heels have fun cut outs and you can lace them in the front or the back to create whatever look you’re going for! Wear them with a dress like I did or a pair of dark purple skinny jeans (that are 40% off!) or just a cute faux-suede high waisted skirt! For me, these heels ran a bit small so I recommend sizing a half size up if you snag them for yourself!
More heels and booties to turn heads in:
If you’ve been following me for any amount of time, you know I have a deep love for blanket scarves. For many reasons:
- They make my hair look fuller and thicker when it’s down since it’s so much material at my neck. And since my hair isn’t the thickest and clip-in hair extensions are a pain in the ass to put in, blanket scarves do wonders.
- They keep you EXTREMELY warm. Like, sweat inducing warm. And since I despise Colorado when it snows, these scarves make it feel like it’s summer again!
- It’s the perfect accessory that doesn’t take much effort but makes you look like you have your sh*t together.
So when I noticed that ModCloth has MANY blanket scarves in stock, I went a little crazy. I absolutely love yellow, orange and grey for fall colors so this scarf was the perfect balance. But they also have
Scarves for every day of the week! (plus more!)

But I think I saved the best part of this outfit for last: this purse. You know when you find the purse that holds everything so well and goes with any outfit? Well I finally found that purse. It’s sleek and slim but still wide enough to carry A TON of stuff in your purse. I just took it on a trip to Omaha this past weekend and filled it with my computer, wallet, snacks, book, and a ton of makeup and it never felt cramped! AND it never fell over, which is key! I got so many compliments on it while I was traveling and can’t wait to style it with many more fall outfits!

If you want to hold your head higher than ever this fall and feel your best, maybe something as simple as a blanket scarf or a dress or even a purse can get you there. Finding those simple pieces has really done wonders for my confidence and I hope that inspires you to find what makes you glow and feel your best! And be sure to check out my instagram because I have a giveaway for a $150 gift card and the only way to enter it is there!

Just for reference, I bought this dress in a size small and I needed a half size bigger in the shoes!

I couldn’t agree with this post more – yes, yes, YES! Get after it, girl. Your empowerment feeds others. Keep being a positive force and know you’re helping others be their best selves as well.
Also, enormous (square shaped!) scarves are an absolute staple for me in the cold streets of NYC. Grabbing a few more at modcloth! I got my first one at Zara a couple years ago.
i share what i use for under eye concealer in this post: https://paleomg.com/my-skincare-routine-acne-lasers-dermaplane-and-more/ and wax the stache haha! or i do dermaplane and i talk about it in that post as well! it’s the best!
Love this look on you. Very sophisticated! And those shoes are awesome. You inspired me to make a trip to Nordstrom last weekend and buy a couple of those bodysuits. Also ended up getting a romper and bikini while I was at it… (don’t tell my husband).
Adorable outfit. Especially love the sweater dress & scarf — such a cute combo.
LOVE this post! Also – have you checked out Zara for their big comfy scarves? I’ve developed an addiction! Not sure if the choice is the same in the US (I didn’t even know about Zara when I lived back home in California) as it is in the UK but they’re awesome!
Love it!
I’m a dude so the whole giant scarf thing is probably not a look I’d appreciate in the mirror. However, with regards to your “empowerment”, I think it boils down to seeing and feeling the results of your hard done efforts. There’s nothing like your pants fitting better, your shirts fitting better, being able to bolt up out of bed in the morning even if it’s just for that first cup of joe that makes all the sweating worthwhile. Julie, your site is one of two that I follow for the Paleo lifestyle. I’ve also been to a professional (wellness clinic) that set me up for a true change in eating (and living) habits. Don’t get me wrong, I sill love me some pizza BUT I know that it means a couple of more trips to the gym that week and a lot more water intake.
Also, for me, another thing I put in my mouth these days that has proven value is a high grade pro-biotic supplement. I can’t over state this. Besides all the other stuff I pop into my mouth, I KNOW the pro-bio is the one I’ll miss if I miss taking it. Eating healthy in the first place is paramount for sure, but the pro-bio is essential in keeping it ALL moving through the pipes.
But back to the empowerment thing, not only do my clothes fit better (like they’re supposed to) I look great NAKED too. I’ve even gained a bit of six pack too which I never had even as a young guy (I’m pushing 60 with a short stick). I can honestly say, I’ve never looked better. I don’t even mind the laugh lines and forehead furrows. And apparently the other sex doesn’t mind either (wink wink). It’s nice to get “checked out” by women half my age. Although it seems to annoy my missus. LOL
Hi – I’ve been following you forever and absolutely love that you have started dabbling in fashion. I can’t believe how longI went without Nordstrom in my life! I’m from Omaha and still live in NE- what were you there for? Please don’t say I missed a book signing!
my husbands family lives in Omaha so we go back there all the time!
Hi Juli! Where can I find those cute sunglasses?!
here they are! http://rstyle.me/n/bwxsszbq557
100% agree on blanket scarves making my super fine hair look thicker! So funny I thought I was the only one.
Thanks for the head’s up on ModCloth – I found mine on the kind of weird site Bourbon and Boots last year and love it!!
