This is Juli Bauer from PaleOMG and you are listening to PaleOMG Uncensored.
Juli Bauer: We’re recording now, just so you know. We just started. Hey guys.
Joy: Hey!
Juli Bauer: Welcome to the PaleOMG Uncensored podcast. I haven’t got my intro down quite yet. Do you want a donut?
Joy: Oh yeah, please.
Juli Bauer: You can come over here. Ok. So welcome to the podcast. Guys, this is PaleOMG Uncensored, my name is Juli Bauer Roth. And I’m the creator. I’ll snack as I go. The creator of www.PaleOMG.com. And this is like the 33rd episode, I think?
Joy: Good for you!
Claire: You’re banging them out!
Juli Bauer: Thanks guys.
Joy: I mean, seriously.
Juli Bauer: it’s so fun when there’s actual people around to talk to. Talking to yourself for an hour; sometimes longer.
Joy: I was wonder how that’s been going for you.
Juli Bauer: It’s challenging.
Joy: Because it is kind of hard. I feel like Jackson’s a character, because you talk to Jackson sometimes.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. And then I get complaints on iTunes.
Claire: There’s a pumpkin.
Juli Bauer: Yes. I think vanilla almond.
Joy: I think we should just do a big round of everybody takes a bite of all of them. But the other thing too, I laugh so hard when you’re like; I don’t yawn ever in my life except for on the podcast.
Juli Bauer: Only when I’m talking by myself. It’s not like I’m going to yawn here when I’m talking to you guys. Because I get breaks in talking. But when I talk for an hour straight, as fast as I’m talking right, I’m like {gasp}.
Joy: She’s like {deep breath}.
Juli Bauer: I have yawns the whole time.
Claire: It’s like your body forcing you to take it. It’s like whoa, Juli. Cool your jets.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. It sucks. So this is really great to have human interaction, not just sitting on the couch with my dog.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: And have stuff to talk about. This is great. So I’m having Joy and Claire over. If you guys haven’t heard of them, they have the podcast, Girls Gone WOD. And I’ve been on their podcast a few times. They live here in Denver, obviously, in Colorado. And I wanted to be a good host, because I don’t have many guests over. I like to stay by myself. So I got them coffee and gluten-free donuts from Beat Box Bakery. Have you guys ever been there?
Joy: I haven’t yet, but I always see you post about it, and I’m like, I need to go there.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: I mean, you brought it to us.
Juli Bauer: And it’s not; I mean, it’s not very convenient for either of you location wise.
Claire: Where is it?
Juli Bauer: It’s over by the hospital.
Claire: Which hospital?
Juli Bauer: I don’t even know what hospital it is. 18th and Park Ave, ish.
Claire: Oh. That hospital. So St. Joe’s Presbyterian Hospital.
Joy: Oh yeah. It is off the beaten path a little bit.
Claire: That’s where Jess works, though.
Juli Bauer: Ok.
Joy: Hey Jess; go get us some donuts.
Claire: Jess.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Jess.
Joy: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: So, for the people who don’t know you. Who are just kind of finding out about you guys.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: I don’t know how, because you have 200 episodes. You had your 200th episode party live podcast last night.
Claire: Live from Denver.
Joy: Live from Denver.
Juli Bauer: Did you relisten to it yet to see how it went?
Joy: Not yet. I did some…
Claire: Spot checks.
Joy: Spot checks this morning, and it was great. But I didn’t listen to the whole thing yet. But thank you. Juli was on it, you guys. Juli came to the show.
Juli Bauer: I did not do a good job.
Claire: You did.
Joy: Yes you did. You were just fine. I knew you were nervous.
Juli Bauer: Sandy had like 47 questions.
Joy: No. It was perfect.
Juli Bauer: I was like; what’s up guys!
Claire: It was good, because that’s how our episodes are.
Joy: That’s how our episodes are.
Claire: Like, whenever you show up to our house, we’re like; “Juli, here’s a list of questions for you.”
Juli Bauer: I know, that’s true.
Joy: Exactly. I was like; and Juli was texting me before the show, and she was like, “I’m so dumb, I don’t have any questions!” {laughs}
Juli Bauer: Jackson, stop drinking!
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: OK sorry.
Claire: He’s like, guys, I’m a bit dehydrated.
Joy: I just need some water.
Claire: Where’s your Jackson voice.
Joy: Oh you haven’t heard her?
Juli Bauer: I mean I do it on Instagram a lot.
Claire: Oh I guess that’s true, you do.
Juli Bauer: It’s an annoying voice. I’ve had many people let me know.
Joy: Oh.
Claire: How nice of them.
Joy: I think I have the most annoying dog voice ever. Ever.
Claire: Joy’s sounds like Marge Simpson.
Joy: That smoked a pack.
Claire: Yeah, she sounds like Marge Simpson’s sisters.
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Claire: It’ll come out if you just let it.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Simpson’s sisters? That’s bad.
Claire: One of them is named patty, and something.
Joy: But anyways. So last night, I thank you for doing that, because that was a lot of fun. So if you’re a new listener and you start with episode 200, it will be really fun because you’ll get to hear Juli. But Juli’s been on our podcast like 5 times.
Juli Bauer: I know. I know. Awesome. So, tell everybody just a little bit about you guys. How you came to be. What you started your podcast around. Tell us all.
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: I know, I’m like feeding you donuts as…
Joy: Actually it’s kind of refreshing. I’ve never done a podcast where I’m eating something. Because I’m always like, “oh, I’m going to be that person eating something.”
Juli Bauer: No, we can all be it.
Joy: But this is so, like, chill and relaxed.
Claire: It is. Really relaxed.
Joy: And sometimes I feel like when I listen to podcasts when people are eating, I’m almost like, “oh, that sounds so good, whatever they’re eating.”
Claire: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: Right.
Claire: So if you guys are listening to this, thinking, “Oh that sounds so good.”
Joy: You’re right.
Claire: Pause, go get yourself a donut, and come back and be part of the experience.
Joy: Let’s all just have donuts and coffee.
Juli Bauer: It has to be a cakey donuts. These are cake style donuts.
Joy: Yes, very cake style.
Claire: And get a coffee if you want one.
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: Come back, come back.
Juli Bauer: Ok.
Claire: Welcome back.
Joy: Welcome back, we’re here. This is donut corner. Ok, so how we started? Was that the question? I totally got distracted by donuts.
Claire: {laughs} distracted by our donuts.
Juli Bauer: Just tell people who the hell you guys are.
Joy: Yeah, who we are. So my name is Joy Parrish. Where do we start with our individual stories? The long and short of it was, I started CrossFit like 10 years ago, I want to say. And then as far as developing the podcast, we kind of saw a hole in the content of the podcast world. That there really was nothing out there for women to listen to about women who lift. So, Claire and I knew each other through the CrossFit gym.
Juli Bauer: {laughs} Jackson.
Joy: Was that the new toy I just got him?
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: That was totally my fault.
Juli Bauer: They might not even hear it, and then people are going to be like, we can’t even hear what you’re complaining about.
Claire: We can’t hear it!
Joy: We’ve done that, too, when JT snores. I’m like, “Oh my gosh, JT’s snoring!” Like, we can’t hear JT snoring. Stop talking about that. I love how people point things out that we do wrong.
Juli Bauer: {laughing}
Joy: Anyway. So that’s kind of how the podcast evolved. I’ve been involved in sports my entire life. No. Active. Not sports, at all. But I’ve been active my entire life.
Claire: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Opposite.
Joy: Definitely not. I’ve been mostly a dancer my entire life, and then I got into running in college, and kind of doing all the endurance.
Claire: Turbo Kick.
Joy: Yeah, Turbo Kick. All the endurance bullsh*t. And then found CrossFit. Just started kind of really getting into that world. And then, I just really liked podcasts. So the podcast really started through Claire and my relationship at the gym. So that’s kind of how we just; one day we were like, “We really should start a podcast. There’s nothing out there for women.” So that’s kind of how that evolved, and then we just kept doing it. We found that people really liked the community, and that just started building. As you know. Building a community, and building your blog, and people come in together and connecting with your story and your life is kind of what we’re all about. Instead of just; this is not the podcast to come to, for us, the Girls Gone WOD podcast, is not the one to come to if you want the best way to get 6 pack abs.
Claire: Or the best way to pair your snatch.
Juli Bauer: {laughs} Yeah.
Claire: I don’t know how to answer that question.
Joy: As I put a donut in my pie hole right here.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: That’s just not…
Claire: That’s not what we’re about.
Joy: No.
Juli Bauer: So, you’ve been doing CrossFit 10 years, you said?
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Juli Bauer: That’s crazy.
Joy: I started a long time ago.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Like, out of a garage gym.
Claire: Which I feel like everybody who started 10 years ago, that’s how they started.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Yeah. Because there were no other options out there.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: And then how long have you been doing CrossFit?
Claire: I started CrossFit. Hello, my name is Claire Cook, you may or may not know that you pronounce my last name Cook.
Joy: {Laughs} .
Claire: Not Cotch, or Cock.
Juli Bauer: {laughing}
Claire: I started CrossFit in 2011. So I’ve been doing it for 6 years. And I was not athletic, or active, or sports. I was in choir and student council growing up.
Juli Bauer: I was a choir girl too.
Claire: Yeah.
Joy: Really?
Juli Bauer: It just feels good. Yeah.
Claire: I mean, you’ve got to like…
Juli Bauer: Express yourself.
Joy: Jazz hands!
Claire: Jazz hands. So choir is like my athletic.
Joy: {laughs} So much.
Claire: So many jazz…
Joy: {laughing}
Claire: And I started doing CrossFit because, I guess I was active in the sense that I was a raft guide, and I was a backpacking guide. And being from Boulder just campout is just a normal life. But most people are like, that’s pretty active. And then my husband and I were living in Moab, working as raft guides. Climbing all the time, hiking all the time, and we moved to Denver. I’m from Boulder, but we moved back to Denver so that Brandon could go back to school. And we were just bored out of our minds, and needed to find something to do. And so we moved back in October, November. And that following March, for Brandon’s birthday, I gave him a birthday card and on the inside there was a picture of a climbing gym on one side, and a picture of a CrossFit gym on the other side. And it was like, pick which one you want, I’ll give you a month membership at either of these gyms. And he happened to pic the CrossFit gym, and that’s how we got started with CrossFit. Just because we really needed something to do; we were going crazy.
So we started out at CrossFit J, and that’s just kind of got into it. Had that experience where I think a lot of people have where you’re like, “I’m fit, this is not going to be a big deal.” And then you do your first workout and you’re like, “Everything I thought about fitness is a lie!” {laughs}
Joy: {laughs}
Claire: Like, I’m just so sore. Our first workout was just tabata air squats. That was it.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: And I couldn’t walk for two days.
Juli Bauer: Screwed. Your screwed.
Claire: I was like..
Juli Bauer: Even now. Even when we do tabata air squats at this point, after several years of CrossFit.
Claire: Oh my god.
Juli Bauer: Screwed.
Claire: Yeah.
Joy: I think my first CrossFit workout was Helen or something.
Juli Bauer: Eww.
Joy: Yeah. And it’s just like, that’s it? When I saw the workout. And then it was like; oh my gosh, what just happened!
Claire: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: Every time. And how we all came to be, is I coached at CrossFit J, and so I coached Joy in the morning classes when she would always be there early, to the 5:30 a.m. and then I coached Claire in a lifting seminar. Yeah, that TJ, the owner of CrossFit J wanted to put on. So that’s kind of how I knew them, and how I came on their podcast.
Joy: Gah, it’s been so long.
Juli Bauer: I know. It’s so weird. It’s so weird. So you guys just got back from Costa Rica.
Joy: Yes.
Juli Bauer: So, I talked about Costa Rica on my last podcast that just came out, yesterday. Don’t be a piggy, Jackson. So I went to Costa Rica with Under 30 Experiences in January 2016, I think. And you guys just did that total same trip. Obviously they do everything probably a little bit differently but you did a very similar trip that I did. So how was that? How was that experience?
Joy: So much fun.
Juli Bauer: How was that Under 30 Experience?
Joy: Well, being 39, the under 30.
Claire: {laughs} I enjoyed it. I’m 29, and I was like, this is just for me!
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Claire: It was really fun. We had about 20 Girls Gone WOD listeners who came. And we were really lucky that zero of them were weirdos. In fact, they were all really wonderful.
Joy: All wonderful.
Claire: And we did some sandbag workouts. We took some Empacks. We ate ice cream from this lady at her house.
Joy: Yeah, a little bag.
Claire: Yeah, you did that too.
Joy: Yeah, where you cut open the bag and you just eat it out of the bag.
Claire: Yeah! It’s the best.
Joy: Like an otter pop.
Claire: Random old lady selling ice cream out of the fridge inside of her house. I was like, this is legit.
Juli Bauer: And it’s dark outside, and you’re like, what the hell? And we don’t speak Spanish, and they only speak Spanish, and we’re like, what is going on?
Joy: And she’s just throwing it to you through like a barbed window.
Juli Bauer: Yeah, they don’t even open their gate.
Joy: No.
Claire: They just pass it under the door.
Juli Bauer: Yeah, such a strange experience. It’s like, what’s happening?
Claire: It’s so good though. But also the best ice cream I’ve ever had.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. It always is.
Joy: I really appreciated how the Costa Ricans were like, we don’t really care. Just the Pura Vida lifestyle. Oh my god. Juli is holding Jackson like a baby right now, and it’s just the cutest. Hi, Jackson, you have the cutest face.
Juli Bauer: I know.
Joy: Oh it’s the best. He’s so cute.
Juli Bauer: He’s one block.
Claire: He’s like a solid.
Joy: Little blobby face! Oh, there, see there was my dog voice, just a little. It’s actually not a Marge Simpson.
Claire: No. But it comes out.
Joy: Oh, it’s a little bit. So, what I took away from this was, Pura Vida lifestyle, I loved it so much, because everyone really is just so chill. But what I found just hilarious is wherever we went; like the ziplining tour, or the standup paddle boarding. They don’t really care. There’s not really a lot of rules around all this stuff.
Claire: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: No.
Joy: Like, we went standup paddle boarding. They legit, when we arrived, had all the paddle boards kind of lined up. All the guides are like the; sorry. Just this face right now.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: You guys have a stacked face of Jackson’s head.
Claire: It’s a totem pole.
Joy: We’re going to Instagram this right now, because the totem pole of Juli’s head and Jackson’s head right now is hilarious.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: But the standup paddle boards were all lined up, and then the guides were jumping off a cliff on the other side of this little bay that we were walking up on. They’re just jumping off a cliff. They walk up and they see us, they’re like, oh ok. So they run over, they give us all the paddle boards and they just push us out in the ocean. They’re like, see you later! Don’t even take any money. Don’t even tell us to come back in an hour.
Claire: Yeah, we got back and we were like, “Who do we pay?” They were like, “Oh, we don’t know.”
Joy: Oh, we don’t know. So we were like, ok.
Juli Bauer: Are you serious?
Joy: Yeah. So we went in the afternoon, and we were out for a good 2 hours. I’m not kidding. 20 of us went out like a mile, just middle of nowhere.
Claire: Like, out to sea.
Joy: Any time I’ve been standup paddle boarding, they’re like, “Oh just stay in this little area.”
Claire: “Stay in the cove.”
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Just go back and forth for like an hour.
Juli Bauer: if the tide doesn’t take you out. You could diet.
Joy: Exactly.
Juli Bauer: Sh*t.
Joy: We were so far out that I kind of started to get worried. But I was like, this is actually going to be on the news. I could just see this happening. The sun is setting, it’s getting dark. We are so far out.
Juli Bauer: And the sun sets so fast there.
Joy: So fast.
Juli Bauer: You’re like what the; ok, it’s pitch black.
Claire: Ok. I’m glad you brought that up. Because I was staying there, and they were like, we might get a good sunset. So there’s this, kind of rule you can use when you’re backpacking and you want to know how much time you’re going to have before the sun sets. And it’s like a hand width from the horizon is about an hour. So if you can hold your hand up and the sun is a hand-width away from the horizon, you’re like; “oh I still have an hour of sunlight so we’re good to go.” So I did that, and I was like, this looks like we still have 2 hours to go, guys. I think we’re going to be good. 30 minutes later, sun is setting.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: Oh. Everything I thought about nature is wrong.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: I’m in the middle of the ocean, and I’m not moving for some reason.
Joy: Yeah, that was the other thing. The tide was pushing us out. So I’m like, oh my gosh. We’re going to be so tired.
Juli Bauer: Sh*t.
Joy: So paddling back is going to take twice as long. So I start freaking out. So I’m just paddling back. Finally, we make it. Obviously. But the guides are still just jumping off the cliff when we get there.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. They don’t care.
Joy: They’re like, “Ok, got your boards. See you later!” And we’re like, who do we pay? And the same thing with ziplining. Like the legit would just push us off the zipline, and be like, Bye!
Claire: Bye!
Juli Bauer: Yeah, and they don’t tell you anything.
Joy: No.
Juli Bauer: A girl I was talking to when I was in Dallas, she said the first day on Costa Rica trip they went zipline, and she almost broke her leg because they didn’t tell her to slow down, and then she slammed into it.
Joy: Oh yeah.
Juli Bauer: She had to whip her legs up, and she was like, I thought it was totally broken. And the whole trip she has an almost broken leg.
Claire: Yeah. They were a little bit better than that.
Joy: They were.
Juli Bauer: Keep your knees up!
Claire: Yeah.
Joy: But there was definitely an air. I’ve been ziplining before in Hawaii, and everything was super safe, and uber contained. But this was just so funny. They would legit; once you’re ready, they push you off.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: But we had a blast. It was so much fun.
Juli Bauer: That’s awesome.
Joy: Yeah. We had a good time.
Claire: It’s always fun too to connect with our listeners in real life. Because I think, you can probably relate to this. We just sit in a room and podcast. And other than some social media interactions, there are no real-time feedback about, these are the people who actually are part of my community. So it was really cool to actually spend time with people, and be like, oh. We actually, our message has gotten out into the world a little bit. Other people are actually a part of this with us.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: And it was the first time that we’d ever really connected with people like face to face for more than a second in passing.
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Claire: Which is cool to have time to spend with people, and hear their stories, and talk to them, and hear, not just, “Hey what do you find of value in our podcasts. Hey talk about us.” But like, “Hey, what’s your life. How can we connect with you better.” So that was pretty cool.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Because there was a couple last night there at your party.
Claire: Yeah!
Juli Bauer: Who went to Costa Rica with you guys? And then flew out.
Claire: They flew up from Texas.
Juli Bauer: That is crazy.
Joy: Just for the…
Juli Bauer: And she was like, I went to your book signing in Dallas. I was like, what the? How cool are they?
Joy: Marty and Ryan, by the way. Shout out to them. The are just the nicest. The nicest people.
Juli Bauer: And so cute.
Claire: So cute!
Juli Bauer: They’re like Ken and Barbie.
Joy: He’s the one that gave me the Band-Aid, because I cut my finger last night. And he’s like, “I’ve got a Band-Aid!”
Claire: Of course he had a Band-Aid.
Joy: They’re just so nice. They were the best. And they continue to be the best. We love them. People like that; we’re just like, man how did I get so lucky to connect with such cool people.
Juli Bauer: Yeah, that’s so fun.
Joy: Yeah, it was.
Juli Bauer: How cool. That’s such a cool experience there.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Also I heard on; I was listening to your podcast while I was grabbing donuts this morning, finishing up the last one that you guys just published. And you were talking about how you’re doing an event with the Incline, the Manitou incline.
Claire: It’s going to be so fun!
Joy: Claire is so excited.
Juli Bauer: You have done it?
Claire: Yes.
Juli Bauer: Yes? And you haven’t?
Joy: I have not.
Juli Bauer: Ok. So.
Joy: Have you?
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: So I want to talk about this.
Claire: It’s a sweaty experience.
Juli Bauer: It’s such a sweaty experience. So for people who don’t know, look up the Manitou Incline. It’s literally a stairway into heaven. It looks like a stairway; but it’s not heaven. You’re not having a good time.
Joy: No. Ok.
Claire: {laughs} You’re not having a good time.
Juli Bauer: And I, yeah. I’m a person who likes pain. I like that.
Joy: Yeah. Is it like walking red ruck stairs, or worse?
Juli Bauer: No.
Claire: No.
Juli Bauer: No. Much more.
Claire: It’s less stairs, and more of a ladder.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: It’s so much steeper than stairs.
Juli Bauer: Like I literally; when she was saying, you don’t have to crawl. But sometimes you’re putting your hand, because it’s so steep. You’re like putting your hand on the stair in front of you.
Joy: Ok. Yeah.
Juli Bauer: And they’re not sketchy stairs much anymore, but they’re not like red rock steps that are super nice.
Claire: It’s less of a true stair and more of; you don’t hike so..
Joy: Well what I’m comparing it to is camel back in Arizona. Because I did this hike that’s 30 minutes, really high incline, really steep incline, to where there’s a bar built into the mountain that you have to grab onto.
Juli Bauer: Oh.
Joy: It’s pretty steep. Yeah. Claire just showed me a picture.
Claire: It’s like 2x4s that are across. So it’s almost like; they’re almost less stairs and more just there to keep you from sliding down.
Joy: Ok great. Yeah.
Claire: It’s like a railroad track.
Juli Bauer: And there’s like a false, like you think you’re there.
Joy: You think you’re done? That’s how Camel Back is in Arizona. You think you’re done, and then you’re like, oh there’s more.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Joy: So, how long typically does it take to get to the top?
Juli Bauer: I think it took us like 45 minutes.
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: And we stopped a couple of times. Because I had a friend who had just recently had a baby. She was just getting back into exercise. But she was a really fit person before. So we stopped a couple of times. One of my friends who ran the Leadville 100, she was the leader of us. She was like, “Are you guys serious? This is what I used to run up as my warmup run as I went up the rest of the mountain.” I was like, f*ck you. Whatever.
Claire: Nobody wants to talk to you.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Exactly. Go away. But what I don’t like is you get there, and you’re like, ok sweet! I finished! But then it’s like 3 miles to get down, and it’s like this wrapping back and forth. And you’re like, I just 8 want to be done. I just want to go have a drink. I’m finished.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: So that’s what was annoying to me. Because them I’m like, sprinting downhill to just get off. And you can go down the steps, but it’s sketchy.
Claire: It’s really hard to get your knees. It’s hard for your joints to go down like that.
Juli Bauer: I had my friend from Nebraska. She smokes, so that obviously does not help. But then come to altitude; she got up to like 10 steps and was like, hell no.
Joy: No.
Juli Bauer: No. And she runs on a regular basis. But she was like, I cannot do this.
Joy: Oh my gosh.
Juli Bauer: So have fun with that guys. Good luck.
Joy: Ok great, yeah.
Juli Bauer: I will not be joining.
Claire: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: I did that and was like, never again.
Joy: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: I’m glad I did that once.
Claire: I know, when Joy texted me, she was like, do you want to do the incline? I was like. No. I don’t.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: But I will.
Juli Bauer: Good for you for doing it again.
Claire: But I don’t want to.
Joy: Yeah. So join us, listeners, please. Join us. June 24th.
Juli Bauer: I was thinking about putting like a Denver guide together for my website, because I get questions about that all the time.
Joy: Smart.
Juli Bauer: And I was going to put the incline on there.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: But I’m not going to take pictures there, but you should do it.
Claire: It’s an experience.
Juli Bauer: It’s an experience.
Joy: We’ll take pictures for you.
Juli Bauer: Like Garden of the Gods.
Claire: Are you a hiker?
Juli Bauer: No.
Claire: You’re not really like a nature person.
Juli Bauer: 100% no.
Claire: I feel like it’s similar to hiking a 14er.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: Where you do it, and you’re like; ok did it. I didn’t really enjoy it. I’m glad it’s over. And I’m not a big 14er person, just because the suffering is not worth it to me. I’d rather go on a nice beat of a hike where I’m enjoying nature and talking to my friends.
Joy: This really isn’t selling me on the 14er we’re doing this summer, by the way.
Claire: I don’t like 14ers! Brandon was like, are you even going to do this 14er with me and Joy? And I was like, I mean I feel like I have to. But I don’t love 14ers.
Joy: Well that’s good to know.
Claire: I prefer to not do them.
Joy: It’s good to know that I can do this one and done thing.
Claire: Exactly. It’s an experience. It’s a bucket list thing. If you’re from Colorado, you kind of have to; it’s like a rite of passage. But I just don’t care to suffer in nature. I will suffer in the gym so that I can enjoy nature.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Exactly. Exactly. I did one 14er, and I was like; never again.
Claire: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: It was like, Mt. Quandary. I feel like most people do that one. And I just never want to do it again. But I think it’s something you should always try.
Claire: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Maybe you’re going to be super into hikes.
Claire: Yeah, who knows. And I love hiking. I just don’t love 14ers. I just want hiking.
Juli Bauer: To enjoy it.
Claire: Yeah, to enjoy it. Exactly. It’s not like a conquer anything for me. I feel like people who do 14ers, it’s like, for them, if they don’t reach the summit, then the hike didn’t count. For me that’s not really how I approach my life.
Joy: Right. Right.
Juli Bauer: So you guys have the Games coming up. You’re going this year?
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Juli Bauer: How many years have you been?
Joy: I’m going to compete.
Juli Bauer: Yes. Competing.
Claire: I’m going to compete in all of the vender village {laughs}.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Joy: Yes.
Juli Bauer: That’s great.
Claire: I actually almost won a vender village event once. It was like a double under burpees event, and it was before anybody had double unders in the CrossFit, except for me. And I was really sad I didn’t win.
Joy: Wait, you won an event with Christmas Abbot and the…
Claire: Oh I did! I beat John Para. Do you know who Jon Para is?
Juli Bauer: NO.
Claire: He is a games athlete from southern California. He’s like a policeman. And this was when Christmas Abbot was still …
Joy: Yeah this was right when we started the podcast.
Juli Bauer: Oh, ok.
Claire: I was obsessed with Christmas Abbot. I still love her, but I was obsessed with her.
Juli Bauer: Is she still in the CrossFit world?
Claire: I think she still owns CrossFit invoke. Maybe she doesn’t I think she does. But now she’s more into; she did her badass body diet.
Juli Bauer: Oh yeah.
Claire: Which is kind of like The Zone diet, but then she came out with an at home workout thing that goes with that. So she’s kind of more shifted to that stuff. But anyway. When she was willing to Nascar, she did this event at the CrossFit games where they brought in a Nascar car, and the event was like, you do 5 burpees, and then you run up to this car and you take an air gun, and you have to take the tire off.
Juli Bauer: Oh, ok.
Claire: And that was the whole event. And I somehow got paired up with John Para, who is a literal CrossFit games athlete. And he beat, it was 5 burpees. He beat me by like 2 burpees. So he’s going twice as fast as me. He gets to the tire, and somehow I got to the tire like a minute after him, and I still beat him.
Juli Bauer: Oh my gosh.
Claire: Because he, it was like a technical error or something. He thought something he had to do that we didn’t. But to this day, I’m like, “I beat a CrossFit games athlete in an athletic event once.”
Joy: Yep. Yep. It’s a huge badge of honor.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: I was very proud of that.
Claire: I was very excited.
Joy: As you should be.
Juli Bauer: How many times have you guys been to the games?
Claire: This will be my…
Joy: Fifth.
Claire: No.
Joy: No? Fourth?
Claire: Fourth.
Joy: And our third.
Claire: Have we only been twice?
Joy: Yes.
Claire: Ok yes. So this is my 4th. I went in 2013, 2015, 2016, and then 2017. And we’ve been together 2015, 2016.
Joy: Yeah so this will be our third trip.
Juli Bauer: Ok.
Joy: Oh it’s so fun.
Claire: It’s so fun. It’s like CrossFit Disneyland.
Joy: Have you ever been?
Juli Bauer: I’ve been once.
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: I think just once.
Claire: You should come with us.
Joy: So much fun.
Juli Bauer: I just get overwhelmed with that many crossfitters who are just drinking the CrossFit juice.
Claire: That’s what’s fun about it though.
Juli Bauer: Kool-Aid?
Claire: I think that’s fun because it’s like, every once in a while, you have to take a cold shower in the CrossFit Kool-Aid again to reset.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Ok. I don’t know if I fully agree with that.
Claire: That’s fair.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Sometimes it’s like, I just can’t take that many people with their shirts off at a non-pool/lake event.
Claire: {laughs} That’s fair.
Juli Bauer: It just gets overwhelming to me. And I post pictures in my swimsuit all the time, but there’s a point to them. You know. There’s a beach.
Joy: You know.
Juli Bauer: There’s a pool. There is a like to know it link.
Joy: It’s funny that you; yes. There’s a purpose.
Claire: Everybody was walking around with a like to know it link above their head, and you could just…
Joy: Scan it with your phone.
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Claire: you should get a like to know it wristband.
Joy: Hey!
Juli Bauer: This girl who invented this company might just do that. She is f*cking badass.
Joy: That’s amazing. Because you just went; did you just back from an event for like to know it?
Juli Bauer: I did.
Joy: OK. We can talk about that too. But, something that you bring up too about how people are just kind of traipsing around and flashing their abs. I think just being older and being at the games, I realize; I don’t want to say I’m old, because I’m not. But how the 20s crossfitters are so much different. There are stands and set ups where it’s legit; like a club. Like, some of the vendors will have a huge set up.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Claire: Exactly.
Joy: And the music is pumping, and there are girls in bikinis hanging out. That piece, I’m like, I could do without it.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: But I forget that there’s a world in CrossFit where people are hooking up and being all showing and your boobs hanging out for the purpose of just being like, “Hey.” I don’t know.
Juli Bauer: I can imagine, just because I watch The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. And they all hook up with each other, behind the scenes, and Tweet each other and DM each other. I’m pretty sure that’s what the CrossFit community is like.
Joy: I swear.
Juli Bauer: Especially at the games.
Claire: It’s like how at Olympic village. The biggest thing they have to do is provide condoms.
Joy: Yep.
Juli Bauer: Eww. Yeah. Big time. Oh my god; what if; you should check for condom vendors. See if they’re starting to sell that. If pass those out.
Claire: Yeah, I’d be like; “You look like you need this.”
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Claire: Just tuck it in your rolled down booty shorts, as if they aren’t already small enough. You’re making them smaller.
Juli Bauer: The little tiny butt cheeks hanging out at the bottom.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: I can only take so much of that at my own gym, let alone that many people.
Claire: Let alone people you don’t know.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Claire: Sometimes I want to walk up to people and just be like, “I see what you’re going for here, but I just feel like this one booth negates everything going on inside.”
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Exactly. Exactly. Yes. It like the whole reason I stopped going to a regular gym and started doing CrossFit, and they’re pushing what is the opposite that I joined CrossFit. So, that’s how I feel about the CrossFit games sometimes.
Claire: Fair enough.
Juli Bauer: Too overwhelming. But I support you guys and how much fun you have.
Joy: Well yeah, it is so much fun. I think that’s kind of like; I turn the filter off of looking at that, but I definitely notice it. And I’m like; “Oh, geeze.” But we just go to get free food and all the stuff.
Juli Bauer: Free food? Who gives free food there?
Joy: Everyone.
Juli Bauer: The year I was there, there was like one food cart in the entire thing.
Joy: Oh my gosh.
Claire: They have really made a big difference.
Joy: Huge.
Claire: Everybody has samples. But Paleo Nick has this huge booth. It’s basically; I don’t even know how to describe; I’d do it a disservice by calling it a booth.
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: It’s like a store.
Joy: It’s like a store.
Juli Bauer: Dang.
Joy: That they set up. And then the bulletproof coffee tent. You go get your bulletproof cold brew, and then you go over to Paleo Nick and you get your sweet potato chicken egg hash.
Juli Bauer: Oh sh*t. This is not the set up. I mean, it was a long time ago. It was probably 5, 6 years.
Joy: The first day, I feel like I’m giving away all the insider secrets. But the first day if you go before everyone kind of shows up; I think it’s early Thursday or mid Thursday. Everybody is giving away free stuff, because all the vendors are super excited. So they’re just handing out tubs of protein powder.
Juli Bauer: Oh, that’s nice.
Joy: We came home with like 15 tubs.
Juli Bauer: So you just pack a very light suitcase so you can get everything in.
Joy: Yes! You have to have all the stuff. And then by Friday afternoon, they’re just giving you slivers of sausages, because they’re like, “Oh crap we’re running out!” But that first day they were like, huge tubs of ice cream, and full on sausages from Teton Waters. And we’re like; this is great!
Juli Bauer: That’s awesome.
Joy: Yeah. So we have a good time there. And then networking, of course. We like to kind of talk to all the vendors and schmooze.
Juli Bauer: Is that were you get some people and be like, “Oh, you should be on our podcast!” When you meet people there.
Joy: Absolutely.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Yeah. And I think it was; well, Under 30 Experiences reached out to us before the games. We then also connected with them at the games.
Juli Bauer: Oh cool.
Joy: Kalo has been a big sponsor for us. We met them at the game.
Claire: WODROD.
Joy: WODROD was a huge one. Now that I think about it, we’ve done a lot of connections at the games.
Juli Bauer: That’s awesome.
Joy: It’s just really fun.
Juli Bauer: That will be so cool.
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: So if you guys are going to Madison, let us know.
Joy: Yeah. Look for us.
Juli Bauer: So; oh yeah, I forgot that’s where it is.
Claire: Yeah and Brandon’s family lives in Madison, so we’re just killing all the birds with one stone.
Juli Bauer: When you were talking about that on your podcast last night, recording that, I was like, “Is she moving to Madison?” I completely forgot. {laughs}
Claire: Yeah. Brandon’s family lives there. So we’re literally, we’re taking Miles. It’s going to be great. Miles is my 18-month-old, by the way.
Juli Bauer: Yes. And I got to meet your husband for the first time last night.
Claire: Yeah!
Juli Bauer: He totally looks; and I’m sure everybody…
Claire: Dax Shepard.
Juli Bauer: Yes!!!
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Oh my god! He looks exactly like him. It’s crazy.
Claire: Especially now that he’s growing his hair out.
Juli Bauer: Yes. Yes.
Joy: Dax Shepard.
Juli Bauer: He is so f*cking cool. He was just so nice.
Joy: He’s the sweetest.
Juli Bauer: Just easy to talk to, super chill. He’s like, “I’m not trying to hold you here. I just want to say hi. I’ll let you go.”
Claire: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: {laughs} He was just so cool. I loved him.
Claire: I think he was a good pick.
Juli Bauer: So how has been being a new mom? As you’ve been going through the not having time to workout and figuring out that you have to workout at 5 in the morning and working, and your husband is in school full time.
Claire: Yeah. It’s hard.
Joy: Life.
Claire: Being a new mom is really hard.
Juli Bauer: Yes, that’s what I hear.
Claire: Yeah. I think there are some people who really try to put on the rose-colored glasses, “I’m so grateful, it’s such a beautiful time.” Yes, it’s great, and there are wonderful moments. But at the end of the day, it’s really hard.
Miles is great. And he’s a really easy baby. He was a really easy baby; he is a pretty easy… He’s like a kamikaze toddler, because he’s a little boy. But he just throws himself off of chairs and I lose 10 years off my life every time {laughs}. But balancing everything. And I hesitate to use the word balancing, because we’re not balancing it. Cramming everything in.
We talked about this a lot at kind of the beginning of the year on our podcast. I have tried to kind of establish this as the year of less, because I felt like I had so much going on that I needed to just take a step back and decide, ok, what are my priorities?
We actually had an episode, I forget which number it was. Literally the title of the episode is “Ruthless Prioritization.” And it’s finally having to step back and say, “What’s important to me.” And I think that’s the only way you can do it. My number one priority is spending time with my family. And my number two priority is my health, which through all that, comes sleep, comes eating well, and comes working out. And then my number three priority is work. And that has to be; and paying rent.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Yeah. Paying bills.
Claire: There’s a meme I love that’s like, “Tell us why we should hire you? And it’s like, ‘Well I’m really passionate about being able to pay rent.’”
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: {laughing}
Claire: Sometimes that’s how I feel.
Juli Bauer: Seriously.
Claire: But I got to a point where there were kind of 3 things at play. It was sleep, time with my family, and working out. And I had been getting up and working out, and because of that my sleep and my time with my family was really suffering. So instead; it was like, I’m not willing to give up time with my family. So of these two other things, how can I play with this? That’s how I decided to start working out at 5 a.m. where it was like, I have a little more control over my sleep. But if I’m not working out, the alternative is literally being on Prozac. Which I am currently on. It just was like; something has to give here. And after months of working out; probably a year of being really inconsistent, I was like, “I just have to make it work.”
So I don’t love waking up at 4:30 in the morning. Zero people love it, I think. But it’s getting easier. And I also just have to tell myself that this is not forever. And I think that’s a big key for anyone with little kids. You just have to keep that perspective of, this is a phase of my life. And we may have another kid, and this phase may be 5 or 6 years long. But I’m not always going to be covered in someone else’s snot. I’m not always going to have to wake up because of someone else. And I hate saying this, but I am going to look back on these years and miss these little pieces. And miss Miles being so dependent on me, and wanting to be around me. So I try to look at it that way. Versus; there are some days where I’m just like, “Oh, my god. Can he just need someone else?”
Juli Bauer: For real.
Joy: You’ve been doing a good job with that though.
Claire: Like I said, I hate to call it a balancing act, because it is just every day you have to prioritize.
Joy: You’re very strict about going to bed early. We set good boundaries around what time we podcast, so she can be with family and put Miles to bed. So we do our best to do that too. I think if you’ve read The Year of Yes, by Shonda Rhimes. I don’t know if you feel this way, but I love when she talks a little bit about how you’re constantly in a world of guilt. You can’t really do everything all out when you’re a mom. So you’re either doing your job all out, or you’re doing your family life all out. Or you’re doing half and half. You can’t have everything perfect. So you just kind of have to live in that world.
Claire: I’m really sweating.
Juli Bauer: I am too.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Because I had a dog; can I wash my hands?
Joy: Julie has so much dog hair on her. {laughing}
Juli Bauer: What is that. What is that. This is what my house looks like constantly.
Joy: Julie looks like Jackson right now with all the dog hair. So much sweat going on. But I think just making peace with that too. You’re not a bad mom if you’re not able to do 100% of the mom life every single day. And you’re not a bad employee if you can’t do 100% of the work life every day. So I think that’s a lot of women, I think, feel like you have to be perfect. Or social media is like, “Everyone does it all!”
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: I have a cute outfit, and I went to Starbucks, and I have a toddler, and I have my job and it’s like; nobody’s life is like that.
Juli Bauer: No.
Claire: That’s not real life.
Juli Bauer: No! It’s so frustrating seeing that. I see my friend, she has a toddler and then they just had twins.
Claire: Oh my gosh!
Juli Bauer: I’m like, how.
Claire: That is my biggest fear. We definitely want another kid, and my biggest fear is twins.
Juli Bauer: I know.
Claire: I’m a twin and my aunts are twins.
Juli Bauer: Oh sh*t. Yeah.
Claire: It is very within the realm of possibility.
Juli Bauer: It’s a good chance.
Claire: People are like; well it skips a generation. I’m like, we had both. I have both a generation above me and me.
Juli Bauer: Oh man! That’s scary.
Claire: Please ovaries, no.
Joy: {laughing}
Claire: One egg at a time.
Juli Bauer: I was texting her husband the other day. I’m like, “How’s it going.” He’s like, “It’s hard.”
Claire: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: He’s like, “They’re great but it’s so hard.” And I just can’t imagine. That would be so challenging.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Well good for you for getting up at 5 and still crushing it. And then Joy, you don’t have any kids.
Joy: No.
Juli Bauer: Do you guys; I ask this being a person who doesn’t know if I ever want to have kids. Did you guys know if you wanted to have kids or not have kids or…
Joy: We’ve always been on the track of; well it kind of evolved. I’d say when we got married. My husband’s name is Scott. We were like, “We’ll see, we’ll see, we’ll see.” And it just never really called to us. It was never something that we were like, “We absolutely want to have kids.”
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: So what we did along the way, and what we continue to do. Is we’re like, “Where are you at? Where are you at?” Well, we’re good with where we are. There’s definitely moments where there’s a “should.” Which I know, that’s such a stupid buzzword. “Don’t should all over yourself!” But there’s definitely a “should” as a woman you’re built to do that so you should do that. But I think what it comes down to is just being honest with ourselves is we’re just not sure that’s our path. And we’ve never, ever. The weird thing, and the beautiful thing is that we’re very lucky that we’re both exactly in that same space where, he’s not gung-ho and I’m not gung-ho. So I think the combination of that is like, meh. We’re good right now. We feel like we put things into the world that we feel proud of and we never feel a regret. So at this point; I’m 39. Probably the ship has somewhat sailed. But we’re not planning on it. We’re just not planning on it. And if something changes, we’ll figure it out. But we just at this moment in our lives are still not planning on it.
But it’s really interesting to me because I feel like in couples, especially. If one was to be like, super gung-ho, I feel like that often pushes the other person into either having kids or they break up. And I feel like we’re both in the middle ground that no one is going to go either way. Which is fine. And we feel very happy and fulfilled. But, I mean Claire knows this. It’s been a constant, for a while, I’d say especially from 35 to 39 I was feeling guilty every day that I didn’t have the urge to have a kid. Like, what’s wrong with me? That whole piece. But I’ve worked through that.
Claire: I think knowing you has changed my perception about women who don’t want to have kids. And it’s not that I judged women before. But I just; I’ve realized that Brandon and I are very unique in the sense that both of us have always known we definitely want kids. And multiple kids. And I think for me, it was like a grew up with a lot of siblings, and I want that. I want to have a big family. It was just never a question in my mind. Whereas in the past I’ve known people were like, “I’m not sure.” In the back of my mind, I’m always like, “Oh you’re just saying that. Eventually you’ll realize that you want to have kids.” And I have another friend who’s like, she would get her tubes tied today if she could. And she’s 27, or 28. And she’s just like, “I know. There’s no question in my mind, I never want kids.” Hey Jackson.
Juli Bauer: He likes to push the door open himself.
Claire: But it’s like, it’s made me more aware of the fact; I think it just never occurred to me. I think a lot of women who have always known they want kids are like this. I think it’s like anytime where you grow up with this certain mindset. It takes a personal experience. I don’t want to say, “open your eyes” because I feel like this was transformative, but it wasn’t ground breaking as to, not everyone things like me.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Claire: And when you finally meet someone or is close to someone who is like, “Wow, you have a totally different opinion on this than me.” It’s not that I ever thought it was right or wrong. It’s just that I never really considered that somebody could be totally convicted of, they don’t want kids. And it’s also made me realize that asking someone if they want kids is a really personal question. Which I also never really appreciated. Because it was like, “Of course I want kids. Why would I care if you ask me that?” And it’s made me realize that I have stopped asking people that. I’ve stopped.
Juli Bauer: Because you never know what they’re going through, either.
Claire: Exactly. That’s also huge.
Juli Bauer: I’ve meet so many people go through infertile stuff.
Claire: Right, infertility.
Joy: All of the things.
Claire: Right. Or who knows what your question; I never realized how personal that could be. And now it’s kind of like, hearing you the last few years go from that place of, “It’s something you’re thinking about all the time, you feel really judged for it.” To now where it’s like, “You know what? This is just how I feel about it.” It’s just been interesting to notice how different people’s opinions impact that.
Juli Bauer: And it’s cool when you can respect that. Because I feel like I get that, since I don’t know if I want to have kids. When I get those people that are like, “I can’t imagine my life without kids. Who is going to take care of you when you’re older?” It’s like, none of those questions have to do anything with you so I don’t know why you’re asking me. But it’s cool to see two different lifestyles and viewpoints on that kind of stuff. Because I did a podcast about that.
Joy: Yeah, I listened. It was good.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. It was very mixed feedback, of course. So I wish more people could kind of see it like that. You’re like, oh well ok. They don’t want to; I do. That’s the end of the day.
Claire: Well and it’s like; why can’t we be that way about everything.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Because I think; I mean, it’s such a huge deal to create a human. You created a human.
Juli Bauer: Huge deal.
Claire: Yeah, I did. With my body.
Juli Bauer: For the rest of your life.
Claire: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: It’s crazy!
Claire: It is crazy. I feel like any other decision and any other thing you do in your life, you can turn away from except for being a parent.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: Because you can get divorced. You can move. You can quit your job. You can change your name. You can gender reassignment surgery.
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: You can change everything about you, but you can never change the fact that you’re a parent.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: Whether or not you’re in your kid’s life. There is somebody out there who is genetically half you.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Isn’t that so crazy.
Joy: So crazy. So bizarre.
Claire: I can’t think about it. I can’t think about it too much otherwise I’m like, “This is so weird.”
Juli Bauer: Yeah. And it’s like, your responsibility to bring a good human being into the world. And obviously so many parents do not do that. But to have that responsibility of raising. Like, you know, I have the responsibility of picking up my dog’s poop out of my neighbor’s yard. That’s my only responsibility. Not bringing a decent human being into the world.
Claire: I was talking to my friend that does not want to have kids. We were talking about this, and she was like, “How do you know if you’re being a good parent?”
Juli Bauer: Yeah!
Claire: I was like, you literally. It’s just every single day, it’s like, “Well this is working.” I guess I’ll just stick with this until it stops working.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: That’s basically parenting.
Juli Bauer: Seriously.
Claire: It’s like, this seems like a good idea for now.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. They’re not lighting fires. They’re not killing animals. You’re on the right path.
Claire: He’s friendly. Right!
Juli Bauer: Yeah, I just think about what murders do, and that’s what their child obsessions are. So don’t have that. Then you’re good.
Claire: Yeah. He’s not exhibiting sociopathic tendencies.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Claire: He’s eating a vegetable sometimes.
Juli Bauer: Oh good.
Claire: Great.
Juli Bauer: A vegetable sometimes is a huge milestone.
Claire: Huge milestone. Vegetable sometimes.
Juli Bauer: Do you think; I always think, if I ever have a child, I will plan to feed them vegetables first, when you start doing solid foods so they don’t get hooked on…
Claire: That’s not a real thing.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: I want to ask that, how is that.
Claire: That’s not a real thing. Because people are like, “If you never feed your kids fruit, then they’ll never know what sugar tastes like.” No. They know.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: We know this tastes like sh*t. Asparagus.
Claire: They know that broccoli. Yeah, they know that broccoli is not; they know they don’t want kale.
Joy: So funny!
Juli Bauer: Ok, that’s good to know. They know that their pee smells weird when they eat asparagus. So they don’t want it again, because they’re peeing in their diaper.
Claire: Ok. So I got into that big time for exactly one day.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: {laughs} High hopes and dreams.
Claire: And let me tell you what changed. The first thing I ever tried to feed Miles was liver.
Juli Bauer: Oh. Good for you.
Claire: Pureed liver mixed with breast milk. And I was like, “This is the ultimate superfood! My baby is going to be so healthy!” And it was the first solid food he’d ever had. He’d never tasted anything in his life except for formula and breast milk. And I gave it to him and he spit it out. And I was like, he knows. He knows!
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Liver, that’s like… that’s intense.
Claire: I will say it was very mild. It was very diluted. But still, he already knows this is not what he wants. It had nothing to do with me training his taste buds, because that’s not real.
Juli Bauer: Damn. That’s too bad. That’s too bad to hear. I’m still going to think that if I do have a child. I’m going to try it.
Claire: 99% of what the vegetables he gets are in those pouches where it’s like mango and spinach. And I’m like, well you’re hiding it. But then I also think most adults I know, if they only kale if it’s in a mango smoothie, it’s the same thing.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. They need to eat kale the way I do. This is what you have to do. Do you guys like kale?
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: Yeah, I like kale chips.
Juli Bauer: Ok. I like to do kale thinly slice it super thin, so then it’s not tough. And then you cook it with just a little bacon grease, and then squeeze lemon juice in it. The lemon juice breaks it down even more. It’s almost like collard greens, how collard greens are cooked down for a long time. That’s how it gets.
Joy: Oh that’s so PaleOMG of you, I love it.
Juli Bauer: So PaleOMG.
Joy: It totally is! I just had a Juli moment.
Juli Bauer: A PaleOMGism.
Juli Bauer: That’s great.
Claire: Maybe Miles would like kale strips. We’ll have to try it. Tiny kale strips.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Yes.
Claire: I just named your dish. Kale strips.
Juli Bauer: Kale strips. It’s like chicken tenders, but kale strips.
Joy: {laughs} Tastes just like chicken tenders.
Claire: I tried giving him chicken nuggets, and he’s like, “I don’t want this.”
Juli Bauer: Well that’s good.
Claire: He just eats lunch meat.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Claire: Somebody asked us like a month ago what do you feed your child, and I was like, “Oh he just eats whatever we eat.” No. That lasted, as soon as I said that he stopped doing that. And I was like, I shouldn’t have said anything.
Joy: I remember that conversation.
Claire: Hot dogs and mac and cheese.
Juli Bauer: I feel like some kids just do it and some kids don’t. Because I’ve seen friends who, their kids will eat anything. And will eat exactly what their eating. And sometimes not.
Claire: Nope. And it has nothing to do with whether or not you feed your child fruit.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: They know. He does love meatballs, I will say that.
Juli Bauer: Oh that’s great. Meatballs are the best.
Claire: Meatballs are the best.
Juli Bauer: There’s this brand; I think it’s Shelton’s. It’s turkey meatballs. They’re at Natural Grocer’s in the freezer section, and they just have some, I think, rice flour in them as the binder. But they’re really good if you’re in a meatball pinch.
Joy: What is it called.
Juli Bauer: And you are. You are in mini pinches.
Claire: We usually do the Smitten Kitchen meatballs. But we have a half a cow, so we have literally hundreds of pounds of ground beef. So it’s like; pull out a tube of beef, turn it into balls.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. That’s great.
Claire: Put it in the Le Creuset; good to go.
Juli Bauer: I want to call him Dax; your husband.
Claire: You can.
Juli Bauer: Does Dax make most of the meals since you’re working? Or do you guys do meals together?
Claire: We do a lot of meal prep. I would say he right now is doing a lot more cooking. It kind of shifts back and forth. He’s in school full time. Hello Jackson! He’s like, I hear you talking about cooking.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Claire: I would like to eat.
Juli Bauer: Jackson. Can you get down.
Claire: He’s just such a little darling. He does most of the cooking right now. He’s in nursing school, so when he has clinicals he’s gone for like 13 hours. But he has Mondays off. So even if you’re in school fulltime, you’re not in the classroom 40 hours a week. So it just depends. His schedule changes every quarter.
Juli Bauer: Ok. Cool.
Claire: But he’s a good cook.
Juli Bauer: Well that’s nice. And then you and Scott; does one person cook? Does the other person cook?
Claire: Neither of them cook.
Joy: I laugh so hard. Because I’m like, we’re the worst. We’re those annoying people that buy everything at Whole Foods, prepared already. We spend so much money.
Juli Bauer: Are you still eating PB2? By the jarful?
Joy: Yeah. Not the jarful. But I do like it. I am not as obsessed as I was last time we talked. I found a good balance.
Juli Bauer: Good job. Life is all about balance. Good job.
Joy: We try to be good about that, because we both realized this is, again, as a couple we’re just not really into cooking. But we do try to plan meals throughout the week of; “Ok, we’re going to eat dinner together three nights a week.” Or whatever. And we’ll just grill. That’s our thing. Because it’s so freaking easy to do.
Juli Bauer: It’s the best.
Joy: So that’s what we do.
Juli Bauer: That’s the best part about summer. Meals outside, your whole house doesn’t smell like a crockpot.
Joy: Yeah. So we do that.
Claire: Do you ever have it where you’re cooking something in the crockpot overnight, and you wake up because it smells?
Juli Bauer: Yes. Every time. And I hate it. And then your clothes smell like it.
Claire: I just feel like you can’t get away. We make broth a lot overnight, and I’ll wake up in the middle of the night and like, eww.
Juli Bauer: Gross. I know. I hate it.
Claire: It’s just beef everywhere.
Juli Bauer: Yes. I hate it. I’m not into it.
Joy: Just clothed in beef right now.
Claire: Beef smell.
Juli Bauer: Well I wanted to ask you guys some random questions.
Joy: Ooh.
Juli Bauer: I just have random questions for you. I like doing this with; I think you guys are my 5th guest that I’ve had on. So I’ve just done kind of random questions. So, I know you guys are taco fans.
Claire: Such taco fans.
Juli Bauer: Such taco fans. I really like that about you guys. What is your favorite taco place in Denver, and then what is your favorite taco? Like, kind of taco. You have to pick one.
Claire: Done. I really like Pinche. So I have a two-part answer. I like the tacos better at Pinche, but Mas Kaos, I like the environment better because Pinche is too loud.
Juli Bauer: Where is Mas Kaos?
Claire: It’s like 46 and Tennyson.
Joy: Tennyson.
Juli Bauer: Oh, ok.
Claire: So it’s Uno Mas and Kaos pizza combined into one amazing restaurant that has pizza and tacos.
Juli Bauer: That’s amazing.
Claire: It’s genius. My favorite taco is carnitas. Mostly because I really like pickled red onions.
Juli Bauer: Yes. The best. They should go on every taco.
Claire: Every taco!
Juli Bauer: I love them so much.
Claire: Yes.
Joy: I like Pinche as well. And I really like that they do the cheese melted onto the tortilla.
Claire: Yeah, cotija cheese.
Joy: Mmm. Ridiculous. So all the tacos there. But I will agree with Claire, I like Mas Kaos because of the environment.
Claire: And you can actually get a table.
Joy: You can actually get a table.
Juli Bauer: I need to go there.
Joy: It’s so great. You can always walk in and get a table. You’re never going to be like, waiting for 2 hours. And Pinche is just a nightmare, whatever. So I am always going to go for shrimp tacos or fish tacos.
Juli Bauer: Love.
Claire: What’s your favorite taco?
Juli Bauer: Carnitas. I will always get a carnitas taco. Have you tried the lengua taco there? The beef tongue?
Joy: You like that.
Juli Bauer: Sorry, at Pinche tacos.
Claire: It’s good.
Juli Bauer: Yes. And I was like; ok I can’t do this. But it’s just covered in so much goodness. And I had a beef tongue in my freezer. I was like, ok I’m going to go try this taco. And then try to make my own. Mine was not nearly as good; and I was sick in the meantime. That was, I had beef tongue in the crockpot cooking, waking up sick is a nightmare.
Joy: Oh, not good.
Juli Bauer: And having to photograph it. It was terrible. But I really like their lengua taco.
Claire: You don’t stop and think about the fact that it’s a tongue. It’s like, I mean it’s just a muscle.
Juli Bauer: It’s true. And I really like their mushroom taco there.
Claire: I love the mushroom one.
Juli Bauer: Yes! And I’m not a person who just wants veggies as a taco, no thank you.
Joy: That’s actually a good point.
Claire: It’s almost like a Mexican cream of mushroom taco.
Juli Bauer: Yes! Oh my god. That’s a good. I love that place. It makes me want to go to Mas Kaos tonight. Be like, Brian, I don’t have any food in the freezer. I have a lot of food in the freezer. But we have to get tacos tonight. Last night I was like, “Do you want me to grab some ramen on the way home after the party?” just because we like ramen when it snows. And he was like, no, we can just eat leftovers here.
Claire: Womp-womp.
Juli Bauer: It’s Saturday night, and he feel asleep at 9:30. Come one!
Joy: {laughing}
Claire: I will say that the margaritas at Mas Kaos is basically just a cup of tequila.
Juli Bauer: Oh, ok.
Joy: You only need one. And happy hour is great.
Juli Bauer: Ok! I’m totally going there tonight.
Joy: Go!
Juli Bauer: Ok. What is your favorite thing you’re eating right now? Whether you’re making it, or you’re always craving it every week. Mine is usually like, I make kale almost every day, because it’s so, so easy to make on a regular basis.
Joy: Mine is Brussel sprouts and I don’t know why.
Juli Bauer: How do you make them?
Joy: I roast them in the oven.
Juli Bauer: Ok. The best. Do you like them burnt?
Joy: Yes.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. You’ve got to get them extra burnt.
Joy: I like them burnt, and I’ve been eating the crap out of those. And I can digest them fairly well.
Juli Bauer: I don’t get how people are farty. I don’t get that, thank god.
Joy: No. I don’t get that either.
Claire: I get that a little bit.
Juli Bauer: That sucks.
Joy: I love, love, love. That’s my jam right now.
Claire: And I can’t eat spaghetti squash.
Juli Bauer: I know! So sad.
Joy: Which makes me so sad. That’s also a lot.
Juli Bauer: I keep thinking about that, whenever I make a casserole. I’m like, ok, how am I going to make a new casserole that Claire can have.
Joy: That Claire’s stomach can manage.
Claire: We’re in a really big fried rice phase right now. So we buy at whole foods, they have those cartons of pre-sliced veggies. Which makes life easier if you don’t have to actually slice the veggies. Something about.
Joy: Why is it so easy? Sometimes I feel mad that it’s so convenient. Like, dang it, I feel so lazy but this is so great.
Claire: If you’re making a stir fry and you have to buy each of those veggies individually, you end up with a huge; you aren’t going to use all of them. So either you end up with leftovers for two weeks that you’re never going to eat, or you end up with the other half of your bok choy in the fridge going bad.
Juli Bauer: Very true.
Claire: So we do chicken and shrimp with just rice, and we cook the veggies in the wok after the chicken and shrimp is already cooked, we add the rice and do teriyaki sauce, and a little scrambled egg in there.
Juli Bauer: Well that’s awesome.
Claire: it’s pretty easy.
Juli Bauer: It’s gives me inspiration when I hear what other people are making. Because I’m like, oh sh*t I didn’t think about that. I need to start doing that again. Ok. What are your vices? What is your thing that you?
Joy: Food-wise? Life-wise?
Juli Bauer: It can be whatever.
Claire: Tortilla chips.
Juli Bauer: There you go.
Claire: I could eat a bag.
Juli Bauer: Do you have a favorite kind of tortilla chip?
Claire: Just thin. I like the thin.
Juli Bauer: Like Chili’s style? Did you have that when you were growing up, Chili’s?
Joy: Totally.
Juli Bauer: Like the restaurant?
Claire: Oh.
Juli Bauer: Like paper thin.
Joy: Yeah, paper thin a lot of grease.
Juli Bauer: Like it can’t even hold the salsa, they just break?
Claire: I love those.
Juli Bauer: Love those.
Claire: I am not a sweets person, really.
Juli Bauer: And I gave you donuts today. Here you go!
Joy: Notice mine’s gone.
Claire: Yeah I’ve only eaten half.
Juli Bauer: What the f*ck.
Claire: But like, I have a huge thing of Talenti that’s been in my freezer for months. Because I just don’t crave the sweets. But if I buy a bag of chips, I will eat it in two days. A whole, family sized bag of chips.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Can’t stop.
Claire: No. And I think my life-vice is 30 Rock.
Juli Bauer: Oh and see, I think I watched a 30 Rock and I couldn’t get into it. So I need to retry.
Claire: It’s just…
Juli Bauer: Because I feel like we have similar humor.
Claire: It’s my favorite. And it’s become that thing where, that’s in the background. Because we don’t have a TV, and we don’t have cable. So at night I come home and we just want something on in the background. When I say we don’t have TV, people are like, “Oh, good for you!” I’m like, no, no, no. Don’t take this to mean that we don’t have screens. We still watch stuff.
Joy: We have screens. Yeah.
Claire: We have screens. We have probably watched the whole series like 5 or 6 times.
Juli Bauer: Damn. I do that with The Office.
Claire: Yeah. And it’s just in the background. I love it.
Juli Bauer: And all the jokes are still funny. I love a series like that where you can always rewatch it and it’s still funny.
Claire: And you notice new things every time. I love it.
Juli Bauer: I love that.
Joy: So the things that come to mind for me; something I could not have in the house because I will just tear through a bag in 10 minutes is trail mix. Any type of trail mix. Don’t even go there. I love red wine. That’s the other thing where I could have red wine every day.
Juli Bauer: Do you like cheap wine and expensive wine.
Joy: Yes.
Juli Bauer: It’s just wine.
Joy: Well, it’s really funny. One year I did a blind wine tasting party, and one of my friends hosted it. So we all brought a bottle of wine and we covered it, so everybody rated this wine. The wine that won was a $6 bottle of wine, and hands down beat everything.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. That’s so stupid.
Joy: It was so funny. So there are definitely certain wines that I like. I’m not partial to buying a $50 bottle of wine. But my favorite is Infinite Monkey, which is a winery in Colorado. So good. And then; what was I going to say? Crap I lost it. Wine, trail mix. Vice. What was your vice that you said?
Claire: 30 Rock.
Joy: 30 Rock. Shows. Oh, reality shows. I love me some Kardashians. But I can say that I have not watched it in probably a year.
Juli Bauer: Me too! I’m the same way.
Joy: If I’m on a flight, I will legit download any reality shows. Or I will, in a heartbeat, watch the entire series of The Hills or Laguna Beach.
Juli Bauer: Oh sh*t. Old school!
Joy: Oh yeah. Love.
Juli Bauer: Damn girl. That’s a big vice.
Joy: If it was on right now, I’d be like, “Juli, I’m not leaving your house. We’re going to have to sit here all day.”
Juli Bauer: That’s awesome. So do you watch The Bachelor? Since that’s reality TV.
Joy: Here’s the other thing. I’m afraid to get into it, because I will crack out on it.
Claire: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Yeah, it’s crack.
Joy: So I feel like maybe I should just do it and get it over with. Like rip the Band-Aid, and just be like, “I’m all in.” But I’m afraid. I will purposefully not watch some reality shows because I know.
Claire: You know.
Juli Bauer: I listen to Reality Steve podcast who does all the spoilers. Like, he has some kind of insight and knows who wins. So I listen to his podcast. That’s how in I am.
Joy: That’s actually good.
Claire: Did you ever read the blog, “I’m not here to make friends”?
Juli Bauer: No. But they have a podcast, don’t they?
Joy: I think they do.
Claire: Maybe. Because he stopped doing the blog; maybe he started doing the podcast. But the blog. I’ve never watched an episode of The Bachelor in my life, and I’m not really into reality TV. But I would read this blog, and I would be crying.
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Claire: It was just the best commentary about the Bachelor.
Juli Bauer: I do recaps on my blog, and it gives me so much stuff to talk about. And people are like, “I don’t watch The Bachelor, but I like listening or reading your recaps.” Oh my god, it’s so good. You should totally.
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: You should totally watch it so we can geek out on it.
Joy: Ok.
Juli Bauer: What are your; do you guys, I know you listen to podcasts. Do you listen to podcasts?
Claire: I do not.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Because you don’t have time. Because you do a million things.
Joy: I listen all the time.
Juli Bauer: Well what is your favorite podcast? I guess you probably have a ton. But a couple of different podcasts? Because people always like hearing new podcasts out there.
Claire: I have one podcast I listen to, which is Invisibilia.
Juli Bauer: Oh, I’ve heard about that.
Claire: It’s NPR broadcast. I love it. I would highly recommend it. They don’t have a lot of new episodes. They do kind of seasons, they only release like 3 or 4. But all the ones, I really like them.
Juli Bauer: Ok.
Joy: Right now, I’m really into Pregnant Pause with Zach and Shira. They did a series on; speaking on whether or not to have kids, they did this whole series. Shira is a doctor, Zach is her husband. Whatever. They’re two very smart individuals. He put it together very well. I think he’s a producer podcast anyway, so it’s a really good series. I think it started out kind of like, they were only going to do 5 and then it’s kind of grown from there just from what happens. But it’s a really cool podcast talking about Zach’s ambivalence about having kids, and Shira’s like, we really should do this. And it’s really cute what happens.
Juli Bauer: Interesting.
Joy: So a lot of drama unfolds. I love Death, Sex, and Money with Anna Sale. It’s probably one of my favorite podcasts. She’s a WNYC studio producer. And then I would also say something that I kind of gravitate towards off and on would be Here’s the Thing, with Alec Baldwin. I love Alec Baldwin. And he’s got some really good interviews.
Claire: Some of them are terrible though.
Joy: Some of them are. Ok, so I will throw in an extra one; Beautiful Anonymous is awesome. So it’s a comedian, Chris Gethard, and he puts a call out on Twitter every week when he records the podcast, and a caller just calls in and he talks to this person. They just remain anonymous so they can pretty much talk about whatever they want.
Juli Bauer: Interesting.
Joy: It’s really cool conversations. People that are like, “I would never talk about this to anyone else because I don’t want them to know my identity.” But they just let it fly.
Claire: Oh. Speaking of podcasts real quick. You got really into that Richard Simmons podcast.
Joy: Missing Richard Simmons.
Juli Bauer: I did too. I was so sad it was over.
Claire: They had an article about him recently. He spoke to the media for the first time in years.
Juli Bauer: He did?
Joy: Yeah.
Claire: I think he was hospitalized for something.
Joy: Yeah, illness.
Claire: Anyways. So the mystery is uncovered. They were like, he was never missing. He’s been in close contact with his family and friends this whole time.
Juli Bauer: I loved how that was produced. The music that was with it, the outro? Oh my god I loved it.
Joy: That was really cool music.
Juli Bauer: I was so sad it was over.
Joy: We talked a little bit about S-Town, too, last night.
Juli Bauer: Yes.
Joy: How everyone loved it and I didn’t like it.
Juli Bauer: I listened to the rest of what you thought about S-Town. I f*cking hated it. I don’t know. I think I got 7 episodes in. And I’m like, what are they doing? What is the point of this podcast other than to talk about how this guy is; not even to talk about. To show that he’s completely mentally ill. I don’t understand why people were so into it. The first episode where you were like; oh, this is going to be about murder.
Joy: Really, kind of trying to get sucked in, and then when you’re sucked in when you kind of realize what happens you’re like. I want out of this right now.
Juli Bauer: And then you keep trying, and you’re like, what are they doing? That podcast made me feel really uncomfortable. And I hate when people keep telling me I should listen to this. I’m like, why the f*ck do you like this?
Claire: {laughs}
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: It’s fucked up. It’s not fun.
Joy: I always take people recommendations with a grain of salt. Because what works for one person is not going to work for another person.
Juli Bauer: I know. And I like murder podcasts. I like fucked up stuff. And that, I’m like.
Joy: Yeah. But it has to be delivered in a certain way.
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Joy: I don’t know what it is about it. Do you listen to Sword and Scale?
Juli Bauer: I’ve listened to almost all the episodes. Some things I can’t listen to.
Joy: Same. Yeah. I can’t do that either. Sometimes I think produced really well of the stories and how he tries to put a positive message out. But anyway.
Juli Bauer: Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes he does, and other times it’s just like, I can’t listen about cannibalism of children. I can’t. I like when there’s; I don’t know. When you hear about how an Amber alert came to be. You’re like; “Oh, I get an Amber alert all the time on my phone.” Knowing what the actual story is, the person behind it, that’s I think is interesting. But some stuff is just too dark. And I go to weird places sometimes. I’m like; ok, I need to listen to Girls Gone WOD.
Joy: Yeah, we need to take the edge off here. Cleanse the palate.
Juli Bauer: Lighten the load.
Claire: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: Ok, here’s my final question. So we can wrap it up. Because I really have to pee, honestly, at this point.
Joy: So do I. Coffee.
Juli Bauer: So, ok. Have you guys had to deal with. Because I’m sure you have lots of iTunes reviews. Have you had to deal with any sort of trolls, or just people not liking you, or saying mean things. And how do you deal with that?
Joy: I don’t. You deal with this a lot. {laughs} So I almost want to be like, “How do you deal with this?” Because I know you deal with this a lot.
Juli Bauer: I just weep in my bed. Do you guys weep in your bed? No, that’s not what you do?
Claire: I haven’t had to weep yet. No weeping.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: I mean. We haven’t really attracted a lot of negativity. And when we do, it’s kind of like; eh, it’s going to come with the territory. Because if you’re putting yourself out there in such a way that you’re drawing an audience, you can’t please everyone. Nor should you even try. And then you kind of have to be like; alright. Some feedback I feel like can be given in a really constructive way. And I feel like we’ve gotten some emails from listeners who have, especially during the election, we had some feelings about it. And we just voiced some feelings. It wasn’t anything like, everyone needs to think the way we think. But we shared our feelings. Our podcast is about sharing our feelings. So we did have a listener reach out and be like, “This whole election is really, really stressful for everyone. I just want to come to your podcast and I don’t want to hear about that.”
Juli Bauer: Yeah. That’s fair.
Joy: But it was constructive.
Claire: Right. They laid out very respectfully.
Joy: It was phrased in a way.
Claire: It wasn’t like, “You guys suck. Why would you do this.” It was like, listen. Here’s my opinion. I have an opinion about this. And they were being nice about it.
Juli Bauer: They were being nice about it. Yeah. That’s totally different.
Claire: I feel like for the most part we haven’t gotten too many…
Juli Bauer: Do you read your iTunes reviews?
Joy: Yeah. There’s an occasional one where we’re like, ok that’s weird. But I feel like what Claire is saying is that when you frame it in a way that’s constructive and/or you have some good thought around it, I feel like that’s fine.
Claire: We want to hear different opinions.
Joy: Yeah. It doesn’t really get under our skin. But I know you’re going to make fun of me about the Brene Brown TED talk. But I think if you think about it in terms of, if you’re not willing to join me in the arena and get in the battlefield with me, your opinion just doesn’t matter.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: So if you’re just going to throw comments without any weight behind it or any real thought behind it, that’s really not what I’m going to feed into. So that’s great and all; but that’s on you. It’s not something I’m going to engage.
Claire: You can tell right away; even an iTunes review, when somebody leaves a review after listening to half of one episode. You can tell when you read where someone is like; I think we talked about this recently on our podcast. Someone was like, “All they did was talk about this girl’s baby.” It’s like, I had just had a baby!
Joy: She had just had a baby.
Juli Bauer: Yeah.
Joy: So they probably listened to one episode.
Claire: They listened to that one episode. And I’m not sorry that we had an episode about my new baby.
Juli Bauer: No. And you’re not going to be sorry about that.
Claire: Exactly. Or some people say. What was the podcast, or the review someone was like, “This podcast has no technical tips, it’s just conversation.” And I was like, I actually see that. And it was like one star. And I was like, that’s actually a 5-star review in my mind.
Joy: Because that’s what a podcast is!
Juli Bauer: Yeah. Yeah.
Joy: It’s just that…
Claire: We get little things like Joy is a man.
Joy: Right.
Claire: But we also don’t put ourselves out there in that way.
Juli Bauer: When you just said that; you said, Brene…
Joy: Brene Brown.
Juli Bauer: So I didn’t know who that was. But she tagged me last night.
Claire: She tagged you? {gasp}
Juli Bauer: Yes!
Joy: Wait, what?!
Juli Bauer: And I had no idea who this person was. And a couple of people were like, “Did you see she tagged you?” And she tagged me, like she was making one of my recipes.
Claire: Shut up.
Joy: Oh my god!!
Juli Bauer: I didn’t know who that was! I still don’t. But I’m like, oh that’s super cool!
Joy: I’d have a heart attack. She’s a god. She’s a god in the therapy world right now.
Juli Bauer: Oh really?
Joy: She’s been on Oprah.
Juli Bauer: She’s loving paleo.
Joy: Uh, Juli.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Claire: That’s a big deal.
Joy: That’s a huge deal.
Juli Bauer: That’s awesome.
Joy: You need to Google her TED Talks, watch them immediately after we leave. She is huge.
Juli Bauer: Dang.
Joy: Every woman on the planet right now is reading her book, let’s just put it that way.
Juli Bauer: Damn.
Joy: I mean, we’ve already ready them.
Juli Bauer: She made my buffalo chicken casserole.
Joy: She’s the best! Oh my god!
Juli Bauer: I think I did a clap-hands emoji.
Joy: {laughing}
Claire: Clap hands emoji.
Juli Bauer: Clap hands emoji. {laughs} Yeah. I’d never heard that name. Literally I saw this last night. Yeah, Joy is having a hey-day this is so cool.
Joy: Wow. I love her. She’s amazing. Read her books.
Juli Bauer: I was reading her profile, and it doesn’t have much. She doesn’t say, “Lifestyle blogger” like I have on there.
Joy: No. She’s a PhD in Texas and she’s a social worker. She has written a zillion books.
Juli Bauer: She has a sh*t-ton of followers.
Joy: That’s the whole TED talk. I don’t even know where to begin. You need to watch. You need to learn about her immediately. And read Daring Greatly.
Juli Bauer: Yeah, and everybody out there, if you don’t know. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown. I like that name. She tagged Nom Nom Paleo, if you guys ever cook from her.
Claire: I do love Nom Nom Paleo.
Juli Bauer: She’s awesome. I don’t know if you guys have met her. She’s the coolest person ever.
Claire: She seems like such an awesome nerd.
Juli Bauer: She’s the best awesome nerd. And her husband is the best awesome nerd.
Joy: I just love the little doll that she’s made. I’m like, I want a little cartoon figuring.
Claire: She has those emojis.
Juli Bauer: And her husband makes all those cartoons.
Joy: So cute.
Juli Bauer: Right? What a cool-ass couple.
Joy: That’s the greatest.
Juli Bauer: And they have a house in Portland now. And I’m obsessed with Portland, so I’m so jealous.
Joy: Something you asked last night that I want to add to, last night at our 200-episode party. I don’t know when this is going out, so I don’t want to confuse people. Juli was like, “What’s one of your life goals?” I know this sounds so silly, but I want someone to make a cartoon version of us so we can put it on a T-shirt. That’s one of my life goals.
Juli Bauer: Just put that out on your podcast.
Joy: Yeah. I want a cartoon version of Joy and Claire.
Juli Bauer: There are so many artsy people.
Joy: Yeah. That’s what I want.
Juli Bauer: Right. Ok, well putting it out there, guys. In the universe. If there are any PaleOMG Uncensored artists out there, please make a meme of Joy and Claire.
Joy: And put it on a T-shirt.
Juli Bauer: Do you want Miles in there?
Claire: Nah. That’s alright.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: To much children. Just adults here.
Claire: Sometimes I get like, last week someone was like, “Oh, it’s Miles! I feel like I’ve watched him grow up!” And I’m like that’s cute. And also it makes me realize that I’m putting my child.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: I know. I think about that. If I ever have kids. Like how I don’t put Brian out, my husband.
Claire: Right. I think it helps the kind of relatable thing, I want people to be like, this is my kid. But at the same time, he doesn’t know that 10,000 people are listening to my story about him.
Juli Bauer: Just don’t; at least don’t put a picture of him going to the bathroom.
Claire: No, I will never do that.
Juli Bauer: I hate that.
Joy: Mm-hmm.
Juli Bauer: It’s like people doing the CrossFit engagement photos. Or birthing photos.
Claire: Yeah. I feel like….
Juli Bauer: But when you put your child on the toilet. With how many murder podcasts I’ve listened to, that is child molester’s day dream. Having that. It’s like, oh it’s on social media. Hells to the no.
Claire: Put your phone down. Put your phone down while your child is…
Juli Bauer: You watch your child go to the bathroom, and you clap and you get so excited for them.
Claire: Yeah. And then you’re done.
Juli Bauer: Social media doesn’t have to see it. You can just be like, “guess what? My child is going to the bathroom.”
Claire: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Boom. On the podcast.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: I hate when people do that. I know a couple of bloggers who do that. I’m like blech!
Joy: Stop.
Juli Bauer: Stop.
Joy: Yeah.
Juli Bauer: Well thanks for being on guys.
Joy: Thank you!
Claire: Claire, I’m sorry that you don’t like sweets. I will buy you a bag of chips next time.
Claire: No. It’s fine.
Joy: She loves; she would absolutely, this is delicious for her.
Juli Bauer: Ok. Speaking for you.
Claire: I love pumpkin and chocolate, and I also love cold-brew coffee. And to be totally honest, I’m sitting here and I feel like I’m about to get a migraine, which is why I stopped eating my donut.
Joy: Oh, ok.
Juli Bauer: Ok. And that’s probably why you’re sweating, because your cold-brew coffee. You’re just buzzed as a motherf*cker.
Joy: {laughing}
Juli Bauer: I get super sweaty.
Claire: it’s out of my right armpit.
Juli Bauer: Botox. I told you guys.
Claire: No, because I used to have fake boobs and it messed everything up under my armpits. It messed with the left one and not the right one.
Joy: Interesting.
Juli Bauer: I talked about plastic surgery just a couple of episodes. And I was like, I know. And I mentioned you. I was like, I can say this because she’s talked about this on her podcast. I’m not outing her. But I know Miranda Oldroyd had hers taken out too. And I just talk about; I’m so comfortable in mine.
Joy: Oh Miranda Oldroyd did too?
Juli Bauer: Yeah. And I’m like, I’m so comfortable in mine, but I know other people who have not been comfortable in theirs. So you were in my podcast the other day.
Claire: My armpits aren’t even.
Juli Bauer: One sweat. One sweat. That’s hilarious. Well thanks for being on, you guys are the best. I think people are going to really enjoy me not just talking to myself.
Joy: You didn’t yawn once, I’m so impressed!
Juli Bauer: See! No yawning. Now I feel like I’m going to yawn because I’m thinking about it. But no yawning the entire time, guys. You’re welcome. You’re welcome audience listening.
Joy: I’m glad we kept you entertained enough {laughs}.
Juli Bauer: So thank you guys for coming on. I can’t wait to see what people think about this. I’m sure they’re going to love it. Go check out Girls Gone WOD podcast. You can check them out on Instagram. But they’re available on iTunes; what else?
Claire: Stitcher, Google Play. Anywhere you get your podcasts. We’re at www.GirlsGoneWODPodcast.com.
Juli Bauer: They have 200 episodes so if you’re a binger, you can just get ready to binge.
Joy: Go for it! Come work out with us on June 24th.
Claire: On the incline.
Juli Bauer: And you’ll have that stuff on your Instagram, right? So if they want details?
Joy: Yeah, totally.
Juli Bauer: Go to their Instagram. They’re super fun.
Claire: We don’t have details yet. We’ve already got people emailing us. “Where can I find details!” Just not yet. Just wait.
Juli Bauer: Just hold the phone. It’s June. We haven’t even hit May yet. I guess we have when this podcast comes out. But you guys have fun with that. I will watch from afar on Instagram stories. And follow them on Instagram, because they have fun Instagram stories. I like following them because they both post. So it’s just new content all the time.
Joy: All the time. Really random.
Juli Bauer: Yeah. You never know. Like, who’s house are we in right now? I’m not sure what’s going on. Love it.
Claire: Who’s at Trader Joe’s? It could have been either of us. Wait, not Claire.
Juli Bauer: {laughs}
Joy: {laughs}
Juli Bauer: Well have a great one guys. Go listen to Girls Gone WOD. I will see you guys next week. Who knows what will be happening on the podcast then. But we’ll see. Bye-bye!
Claire: Bye!
Joy: Bye!
I would love to see a Denver guide on the site! I’m heading there with my hubs in late June and would love know about some great places to go and things to do.
