Today on the podcast, I’m finally interviewing a person for the first time and I’m starting with the best: Cassy Joy of FedandFit.com and the author of the 28 Day Fed & Fit Book and create of the Fed & Fit Project! Cassy is one of my good friends and also a person I like to dabble in business with. If we were married, she would be my better half. She’s always positive, never cusses, and is the hardest working human being I’ve probably ever met, while still being incredibly humble. She’s bomb.

This is Juli Bauer, the creator of the blog www.PaleOMG.com, where I share my workouts, my fashion, paleo recipes, and then whatever really the hell else I’m thinking of. Like natural deodorant. That’s what the main topic was. Because nobody likes to be a rank ass B.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So, I honestly have no clue who listens to this podcast. Absolutely no clue. But I’m hoping lots of people are listening to it so I don’t have to just sit here in the living room on the couch with my dog alone. But luckily today, we have a special guest; I actually have a human to human interaction going down on this blog today with a special, special guest. But before I introduce this beautiful human, I want to tell you a little bit about today’s podcast sponsor.

So I recently came across Aaptiv, which is this really cool fitness app. And I know what you’re thinking; “Ok, Juli, another fitness app. Cool. Anyways.

I listened to some of the playlists, and they’re awesome playlists, and have really cool trainers walking you through exactly what you need to do.

1. Introducing our guest, Cassy Joy Garcia [3:24]

Juli Bauer: Ok. So without further ado, let’s talk to the wonderful person who came on today. Her name is Cassy Joy Garcia; how adorable is that name? That’s not like her real name anymore. Is it Garcia still anymore?

Cassy Joy: Yeah, sure.

Juli Bauer: You have like 47 names, huh?

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I do.

Juli Bauer: So she’s the creator of http://FedandFit.com. And just in case, Cassy, you did not hear my podcast last week because you’re doing 8 billion other things; last week I was talking about you, and I said “Fed and Clit” instead of Fed and Fit.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} No you didn’t.

Juli Bauer: I said “Fed and Clit”, and there’s no getting around it. I can’t just edit that out; you have to keep that sh*t in.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: And somebody reminded me of that right before I started recording this with you, so I had to let you know, I was like; sweating from embarrassment after saying that. But anyways, http://FedandFit.com. She’s a cookbook author who, her book just went to Costco but we’ll talk about that in a second. She has an amazing Project. She is an all around badass. She is a really good dresser. And I’m lucky enough to call her my really good friend. And we’ve even dabbled in business together; and we don’t hate each other, which is magical.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So. Hello, Cassy Joy; you little ball of joy, how are you?

Cassy Joy: I’m good. I like your intros. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Thanks. We’re like 10 minutes in at this point, so thank you for that {laughs}.

Cassy Joy: I’ve been rolling. You know what; I really hope that I’m not sleepy one day and accidentally say “Fed and Clit” {laughs} when I’m introducing my business.

Juli Bauer: OH, I pray that you do so you can feel the humiliation I had to feel at that point. When you’re talking highly of a person, and you use the word “clit”; that’s not ok.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Well thank you for coming on. I know you have a crazy busy schedule, so you are pretty much the best. And I mentioned in my last podcast that I really don’t want to interview many people. You and Vanessa from Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind are the only people I want to interview; because I hate all humans. So thank you! Thanks for coming on.

Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh.

2. Cassy’s story [5:44]
Juli Bauer: So would you tell everyone here, I’m sure everyone knows about you; but will you tell a little bit about your back story, what you’re working on, what you’re crushing with life right now?

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I’d love to. Thanks for having me Juli; I can’t I just wanted to tell you how honored I ma.

Juli Bauer: Oh my god, stop.

Cassy Joy: To be; I am, I really am.

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: I was wolfing down my lunch right before this call.

Juli Bauer: Same!

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I just saw your post.

Juli Bauer: {laughs} Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I was like, I did that too! I was wolfing down my lunch, and I was sitting there; I worked out at noon, and we did a hero WOD, and you have that hero WOD buzz afterwards. Kind of the dead buzz; where your thumbs are torn and you just need a minute.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: And a lot of food. Anyways, I was like; I’m so honored. I don’t know why I started going through this little rehearsal; I wanted to remind myself to tell you I’m so honored! Ok. That was the longest side note ever.

Juli Bauer: You’re the best. Didn’t you have a big dish with green beans on it?

Cassy Joy: I did.

Juli Bauer: Oh my god, it looked so good.

Cassy Joy: It was monstrous. It was. I got a little carried away with the green beans. I boiled like a pound of green beans just for myself. But then I ate them all with ranch dressing.

Juli Bauer: I did the exact same thing the other night. They’re like, I think because you love kale as much as I do, I think green beans are the new kale.

Cassy Joy: Ohh, I’m with you.

Juli Bauer: Let’s do it. Let’s make them a thing.

Cassy Joy: I like that. I like that. You can crisp them in the oven, too, and they get crispy! {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Stop. They get crispy? That sounds amazing. Well that’s my next go-to meal. Crispy oven green beans.

Cassy Joy: Oh, I love it. I’m doing a really good job of introducing myself.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I just talked about the last hour of my life.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, we just talked about green beans this episode.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Ok, so tell us all about yourself.

Cassy Joy: So, outside, past the last hour of my life {laughs}. I am a nutrition consultant; certified nutrition consultant, and the food blogger behind http://FedandFit.com. And it’s a big old blog with a bunch of recipes on it; they’re all paleo friendly. Except for when I first started off; I launched my blog about 2011, and I was kind of a stick in the mud back then when it came to paleo, because I was still; I don’t know, I hadn’t bought in completely. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So what did you start your blog as? What was the main goal when you started it?

Cassy Joy: The main goal when I started it, I had already started to see some big difference in my body and my mindset and everything; my physical efforts in the gym. Some major changes that I made, I can tell you all about that in a second; but I started the blog because I was kind of mid-swing in my transformative journey, so to speak, and I wanted to start the blog because I wanted it to be; there weren’t as many, the resources weren’t as thick as they are now, which is really great for folks who are starting now. But I wanted to kind of be a voice for the concept that you could be fit, and fed. You know; my blog is fed and fit. I reversed the words because I really wanted food to come first. But I really wanted that to be a concept; because a huge hurdle I had to overcome when I was in my journey and in that whole transformation, which took about 9 months, it was getting over the idea that I had to eat less in order to be healthy. And I had to work out more. Because I was in one of those; I dieted. I dieted for years, and I felt like I did all the diets, and I had no idea what a food intolerance was at that point in time, and that was after I graduated from college. And I always thought that I would be one of those sleepy, unfocused students, you know?

I was talking to these high school students yesterday, and what I wanted them to understand was how much freedom nutrition gives you. Good nutrition really can unlock some doors; not just, when you get past the actual physical benefits and you start to think about how much easier your life could be if you had more energy and if you were able to focus, and you were able to stay awake. Because I was driving; I went to Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and I would drive the 3 hours home to visit my family, and I would have to stop and take a nap on the road because I was just so sleepy. And Juli, I thought that was normal.

Juli Bauer: Yeah. I think most people do. They just think that’s totally normal.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, I really did; and I didn’t know that was an option. But my waistline kept growing, and I just kept feeling kind of yucky. And the world told me that if I was gaining weight then I should probably diet, and so I did. So that’s when I did all those diets. I really feel like I did them all, and my last diet that I did was vegan. I went vegan for about a year.

Juli Bauer: Oh, I didn’t know that.

Cassy Joy: You didn’t know that?

Juli Bauer: No.

Cassy Joy: Oh, yeah. I did. I worked for a vegan physician, and I was like, “Well let’s do it! Let’s jump in!” I read all of the vegan books. How to prevent and reverse heart disease, and the China Study; and I thought it made a lot of sense, so I jumped in and I kept doing more; I would run, that was the only exercise I did, was just running. My knees and my hips kept hurting and hurting; and I just kept getting sicker and sicker. And I just felt like I was beating my head against a wall. None of my efforts were showing up anywhere. Sometimes I would lose weight; but of course, I realize in hindsight I was just calorie restricting, and I’d bounce right back.

You get to this point where you stop looking to the world to give you answers, because the answers that the world was giving me weren’t working.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: You know? They just weren’t. And this light bulb went off in my head, and I was like; you know what, forget this. I’ve got a decent head on my shoulders, I’m going to see what I can do to figure this out for myself. So that’s what I did. I dug into the research, and I dug into some of the stuff, and I discovered inflammation and what that meant, and the power of eating anti-inflammatory foods, and removing the inflammation causing foods. And I did that. And I also decided I was going to throw everything I knew about fitness out the window and do things that scared me. I’m not a natural athlete; I’m like a baby deer.

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughing} When we were; when Juli and I worked together on the book and we went to Las Vegas to take photos for those fitness movements, and all the movements, I would do what I thought I was supposed to do, and I’d look over at Juli and be like; “yeah? Is this right?” {laughs}

Juli Bauer: She did great. She did wonderful, you guys, she did. She was not a baby deer.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} You are a very good coach. But I just; you know, it’s not natural for me. I’ve gotten a lot better over the years, but I was always afraid of intense workouts. So I said; forget this. If I want something that I’ve never had before, I’m going to have to do something that I’ve never done before. And that was lifting weights, and incorporating a mixed fitness program. So I joined Crossfit. And it changed my life. And that was 8 years ago. And I eventually went full blown paleo, because that was the most anti-inflammatory route. My energy skyrocketed, I felt like my personality clicked into place for the first time in a really long time, and I just slept better, I got more intentional with my work. Things just cleared up overall. And then after about 9 months, my pain in my nips. My nips.

Juli Bauer: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Yes. Yass.

Cassy Joy: Just for you, Juli.

Juli Bauer: The best. Thank god for that. That was wonderful. We just have the body on the mind now.

Cassy Joy: We do. {laughing} Oh gosh. The pain in my hips and my knees {laughing}

Juli Bauer: So good.

Cassy Joy: Oh man. Well those went away. Now I’m sweating.

Juli Bauer: I know! I know! It’s terrifying.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} Yeah, my pain went away after 9 months, and when it was all said and done, I had gone down about 10 dress sizes. And it wasn’t so much anymore about the size or about my weight; I just felt like myself for the first time ever.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: So this is a really long story.

Juli Bauer: No! We love it!

Cassy Joy: Well good. So that’s what went into the blog. That was the concept; that I wasn’t starving myself to see these differences. I was eating a lot. I was actually probably eating more than I had ever eaten before. I was drinking more water, I was sleeping more at night. I felt like my life was just full.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And my first tagline for Fed and Fit was the full feeling, life of food and fitness. It’s been sold since then, but that was really the genesis of it all. I wanted people to know that there’s a way to be healthy and still feel like you’re not having to restrict yourself so much in life. So that was the blog; it started off just as a food blog to share recipes, because friends and family were like, “What the heck are you doing, girl?” And so I just wanted to share the recipes, and I was shocked when people from the World Wide Web started looking up the website.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And they asked better and better questions, and I wanted to give them better and better answers, which is why I went back to school and got certified as a nutrition consultant so we could dive into some of the really geeky food science stuff. I worked with folks one on one, and then the plate just got a little full and I wanted to scale it, so we built the Fed and Fit Project online. Which wound up in a copy of the book; published the book, and invited Juli to join me in the Project to make it better and better. And that’s where we are today. I think very similar to; I see you doing it a lot, but I just try to keep my ear to the ground. Whatever people are asking of me, I try to use that as my compass for what I’m doing in this business.

3. Cassy’s book, Fed and Fit [15:32]

Juli Bauer: That’s awesome. So, can you kind of tell us just a little bit more about the Fed and Fit book and how it kind of plays into the Project?

Cassy Joy: Yeah. So, the Fed and Fit book; can you hear the yard guy buzzing outside my window? {laughs}

Juli Bauer: No, I can’t. But I can hear my dog whining for some damn bone under our coffee table, so I’m like moving the coffee table as I record this podcast. {laughs} So hopefully you can’t hear that.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I can’t.

Juli Bauer: We’re just hot messes over here.

Cassy Joy: We are. We really are.

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: So the book. Oh my gosh, the book you guys! What an adventure that was. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So if you haven’t checked out Cassy’s book, it’s the Fed and Fit book. It’s on Amazon, but it also just went into Costco, as well. It’s a book packed with so much information. It’s any detail in the world you want to know; she has it. But I’ll let you take it from there, Cass.

Cassy Joy: Oh, you’re too kind. Yeah, the book; you know, it really started off as just a cookbook. That’s really how it started. And, I have used the same publisher that Juli has used for her last two books. And they’re wonderful to work with, and we started off with just the cookbook; and then, you know, just like all ideas start to blossom and go their own way, this one did that. My publisher asked if we could provide a copy, essentially of the program that I had online in the book. And I remembering thinking, I was like, “Sure, let’s do it.” I like to think that I come from a place of yes in all things. And I was like, “Yeah, let’s do it. Let’s see what that means.”

So we wound up taking the Project offline so I could make sure it was really purposeful, and I kind of refined it a little bit for the book. So a copy of the Fed and Fit Project, which is a 28-day food and fitness kind of lifestyle overall, went into it. And it’s really not necessarily a challenge as it is so much meant to be a self-reflective journey. It took me 9 months to figure things out; I’m a slow learner, so I try to condense that stuff into a 28-day format. So that’s the Project in the book. It’s got the recipes; it’s got 190 squeaky clean; the cover says 175, but I feel like, I am really proud of that extra 15.

Juli Bauer: Yeah! {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} So, 190 recipes in there. They’re all paleo and they’re all really as healthy as healthy gets because I wanted a recipe resource where folks could just open it up on any weeknight and not have to discern if this is a paleo recipe maybe I should enjoy in moderation, if that makes any sense.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: Whereas; you know, on my blog, I do I have a flourless chocolate cake that I love so much. But it’s not something necessarily that I’m recommending folks have every single week. But I wanted the book to be really empowering in that way, eliminate as many roadblocks as possible.

So it’s got the recipes, it’s got the program, and then the front matter. I remember calling the publisher, and I was like; ok, here’s the thing. If we put the project in there, which is really one of those storybook endings where you get to kind of figure out where you want to go; I was like, it requires a little bit more context. Otherwise it is just a challenge.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: And that’s not the spirit of this program. The spirit of the program is to really kick off a lifestyle. It doesn’t end at 28 days. I was like; so, I might need a few more pages at the beginning {laughs} to describe some things, and then that blossomed into 100 pages of background information on mindset, rest, hydration, food and fitness. But it was a lot of fun.

Juli Bauer: How long did it take you to write the full book?

Cassy Joy: To write the full book; I think we signed contracts in April 2015, and it hit shelves in August 2016.

Juli Bauer: That’s crazy.

Cassy Joy: So it was; it was a good long while, and you know, there are peaks and valleys. There are times where you’re really intense on recipes, and then really, really intense on front matter, and all that kinds of stuff. But I really wanted it to be a book when someone picked it up; because it’s a big book. It’s a $39 book, which is the sticker price. Costco has it; they’re competing with the online prices, so Costco is selling it for I think $23, which is amazing.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, that’s awesome.

Cassy Joy: So Costco is just the freaking best. But I wanted someone to pick it up and be like; wow, this is a value! There’s a lot of stuff packed in here. We have the fitness index in the back with the movements; visual movements by Juli and myself, and then the app that goes with it, where you can take a picture of a QR code for a recipe and it will populate a grocery shopping list in your phone. So it’s pretty dense. I gave it my all, you guys; I hope you like it. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: And one of my favorite pieces; just because this is a question I get all the time, but I like in your book you make recipes pretty big. Like it serves sometimes 8, because so many of your recipes; I don’t know how many in your book, or maybe if all of them, are freezer friendly and you tell people the best way you can store it in the freezer, and then the best way to defrost it and then make it taste like the original version instead of the soggy you know 3 month version of making it 3 months ahead of time. So I love that part in your book. I think that’s really cool and creative, because most people don’t have that.

Cassy Joy: Yeah; oh good, I’m glad that’s useful. I mean, that really is how I cook. They are huge batches, but it’s meant to either feed an army, if you have a party that you’re throwing; or it’s meant, I call it kind of a safety net of healthy meals that you’re able to make and put in the freezer because we all get packed with our schedules, right? And we all sometimes don’t have groceries in the house. And that way you’ve got something to lean back on.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, and you made all those recipes, and put them all in your freezer. I was out in San Antonio staying with Cassy at one point, and her freezer was just filled with all the recipes that she had made from her book and the date that she had made it. So whenever they made a dinner, they just pulled one of those out. So you did that for months, right?

Cassy Joy: I did. Yeah, we did it for months, and I kept notes because I wanted to be sure that I was able to; I don’t know, really decide if something was freezer friendly or not. So yeah we did. We kept notes on everything; and it kept us fed. You know; it’s so funny. When you hear people write cookbooks; they always say it’s such a stressful period, and they always say that they find they become really unhealthy in writing books. Or at least a lot of folks in the paleo vein, right?

Juli Bauer: Yeah, for sure.

Cassy Joy: You hear that all the time. And I was a little nervous going into this because; I don’t know, that’s what I always heard, is that’s what people experienced. And to be honest, Juli. Even though we were working; and not any different than now, but we were working really, really hard. And I felt like I got even healthier during that time.

Juli Bauer: Aww, that’s awesome.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, because I was eating these foods. That’s all I had to eat; there wasn’t even the option to go out because we didn’t have time. But yeah, I don’t know, there’s a lot of power in really good nutrition.

4. Top 2-3 recipes in the Fed and Fit book [23:00]

Juli Bauer: There totally is. And it’s so nice to have those meals in the freezer. I serious love that about your book. Is there; and I know you had this question because you got this question on book tour almost every stop. But is there any 2-3 recipes in the book, if somebody grabbed the book from you and asked you which ones they should make first, what would you recommend?

Cassy Joy: Yeah, that’s a really good question. You know, I really; if you’re down for a little bit of a project in the kitchen; maybe it’s a Sunday and you’ve got a couple of hours to spare, I think the eggplant lasagna is one of the coolest recipes. It has this dairy-free béchamel sauce; which is that white creamy thick sauce that shows up in lasagna; that is killer! It’s so good. So that’s a really good one. We use eggplants as noodles, and there’s a really fun way that you can create that.

Juli and I; I think we both like casseroles a lot, so I have a whole chapter on casseroles, and there’s one in there for, what’s it called; a barbecue chicken casserole, that’s a really good one that folks are really liking. I have my spin on a buffalo chicken casserole.

Juli Bauer: Yes! I made that before, it’s awesome. My husband loved it! Loved it.

Cassy Joy: Oh, good! It’s a good way to hide kale.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: If you’re trying to sneak some kale, Jim Gaffigan style; have you heard that skit by him?

Juli Bauer: No.

Cassy Joy: He goes; he says he’s at some potluck, and he’s talking to this lady, and she leans over to brag to him, she goes “I snuck some kale in there.” And he’s like, “that’s the most offensive thing I’ve ever heard.” {laughs}

Juli Bauer: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: He’s like; kale, it’s like bitter spinach with hair. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: No! Well, that it fair. That is fair.

Cassy Joy: Oh, I think it’s so funny. I love it though. But anyway, it’s a good mask for kale. And then people are really loving the barbacoa. I’ve got a really simple barbacoa recipe in there that you can make in the slow cooker, or if you’ve got an Instant Pot you can whip it up in there; some folks said they can make it in there and I’m thinking about putting up some Instant Pot instructions, publishing those.

Juli Bauer: People will love that!

Cassy Joy: Those are some of the fan favorites.

Juli Bauer: That’s awesome! How cool. People seriously are obsessed with Instant Pot lately.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} They are.

Juli Bauer: I’m doing it because people are obsessed with it, so I’ve been trying it out. But the food is really so bomb when you make it from an Instant Pot.

Cassy Joy: Mm-hmm. It is. I’m blown away by it.

Juli Bauer: Ok, good. Well I can’t wait to try your recipes; because all the ones that I’ve tried have been so, so good. You guys definitely should be picking this book up. And go get it at Costco, because it’s cheap as f*ck there!

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

5. Cassy’s fashion blog [25:34]

Juli Bauer: Costco is the best. Ok, so I have some questions for you.

Cassy Joy: Yeah.

Juli Bauer: The past week, once I was like; hey will you be on the podcast. I was like, ok I want to think of funny, creative questions, be that funny chick.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: And I’ve come up with 8 not funny questions.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: So that’s how creative I am in the past week. But, I think they’re interesting enough; you know, not the normal stuff. So, ok, let’s see. My first question. Since I know you’ve been getting into fashion lately; which I love, because fashion is the f*cking best. And it just makes your blog more interesting. It makes you not get bored with doing the same old thing, it helps you stay creative in your own recipes. So my first question, to this two-part question, is what has your feedback been like? Because when I started doing fashion stuff, people ripped me a new asshole.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Like I was doing some posts on cannibalism, or something.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: So did you have the same lovely response from others, or has it been good feedback so far?

Cassy Joy: {laughing} Oh my gosh. You know, I feel like you broke the ice for me, Juli.

Juli Bauer: {laughs} Oh, good. So we’re both drowning in the cold water?

Cassy Joy: {laughing} No. No, in a good way. The feedback has actually been really positive. I was shocked by how much folks are responding to it. And it really does make this work so much more fun to create for. I know you and I have talked about that before, but the feedback from people is really positive; they really like it. I’m finding that; so one of my favorites, I think I’ve told you about her before. One of my favorite fashion bloggers is Blair Eadie, I think that’s how you say her last name, but she’s Atlantic to Pacific.

Juli Bauer: Oh, yeah!

Cassy Joy: Yeah, she is so; she’s just so stinking cute. And she’s in Manhattan. She dresses a little bit like Charlotte, from Sex in the City, mixed with Carrie Bradshaw. It’s a little edgy, but she’s also kind of preppy. Anyway, she just has these really cool, extravagant fun looks. So a part of me wants to really emulate that because it’s so much fun. But I’m finding that people also; part of the feedback that I’ve gotten from folks is they really just want casual looks. {laughs} They want the stuff that they can wear. So I’m editing midstream. I was thinking about doing this huge, really fun, billowy, extravagant red dress for Valentine’s Day; and now I’m thinking I might just do pink workout pants! {laughs}

Juli Bauer: No! I think; you know, I feel the same way with the fashion stuff. People respond way better to just a simple, comfortable t-shirt than they do to like an extravagant dress; but I remember, I did this one post, and it was this ballroom gown dress, so over the top, and people loved it.

Cassy Joy: Aww.

Juli Bauer: So I think; you just really never know what people are going to be into, and people’s tastes change per season, so I think you should do both. You can be like; “Hey, I have a casual… if you’re like the fitness girl who loves to just go on dates to yoga retreats, here’s a great pair of pants. Or, let’s f*cking go downtown and do up the world in this dress.” I think you should do both.

Cassy Joy: Ok I’m going to do both. I love it. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: If you haven’t seen Cassy much, or met her in person, she just has really cool style, and she just; like we did this Project together, the Fed and Fit Project, and she’s wearing this necklace that has gigantic bullets on it.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Who would be like; oh this necklace is so hip. But Cassy totally pulls it off and makes it look beautiful with a beautiful dress. It’s so cool. So she has awesome style, so if you want fashion inspiration, you should totally go to her site. And her Instagram has a ton of stuff on there, too.

Cassy Joy: Aww, thanks friend.

6. Cassy’s top 3 online shopping picks [29:47]

Juli Bauer: So wait; this leads into the next question. So I want online places. What are your top 3 favorite places to shop online? So, because we always have those stores, boutiques in town or vintage stores or whatever, but then nobody who listens to this can shop there. So what are your favorite 3 places to shop online?

Cassy Joy: You know, I’m doing a lot of shopping on Nordstrom right now.

Juli Bauer: It’s the best.

Cassy Joy: I just; I just have to throw it out there. It’s got to be one of the 3, because that’s where I’m buying so much stuff lately. It really is the best; it really is, because you can sort things. Let’s say you have a budget, and you’re like; I only want to spend $100 on a jacket. And I want it to be this color. I don’t know; they just have so many options and they’re really cool stuff and they partner with really cool brands, like J. Crew is a part of Nordstrom’s now. They are partnering with them. And they have better prices for J. Crew stuff on Nordstrom than on JCrew.com.

Juli Bauer: That’s awesome. And they have so many sales going on all the time, and their anniversary sale; and their customer service is so bomb.

Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, it’s so good! I had a package that I thought was swiped; I think I may have told you this. I thought it was swiped from my doorstep, and I called Nordstrom. I had a photo shoot scheduled, and I was really nervous about it. It was supposed to be the next day. And I was like; this package never showed up. And they looked it up, and said it was delivered so I thought maybe it was just taken. And they overnighted me a whole nother one to show up first thing in the morning in time for my photo shoot, they really came in, and then I found the package, we just had a new delivery guy and he had hidden it behind an air conditioning unit on the side of the house.

Juli Bauer: Oh no! {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughing} So, of course I returned it, but they were just, no questions asked. I was just blown away.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, no questions asked.

Cassy Joy: They are a really good company.

Juli Bauer: They just are like; yep, cool here you go.

Cassy Joy: I know. They’re the best. And they’re really, really forward thinking. So that’s a really safe place to shop. Another favorite of mine is; and it’s hard to shop there for fashion posts because they don’t have a lot of stuff in stock. Right? They don’t order a lot of stock, in a certain dress, for example. But ASOS.

Juli Bauer: Yes!

Cassy Joy: Is one of my favorite places to shop.

Juli Bauer: So bomb!

Cassy Joy: So cool. They have; ChiChi London is one of the designers that works; I don’t know how I know that name by the way. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: You’re so fashion forward.

Cassy Joy: I had no idea I knew that name. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: But that’s one of the designers they work with; and they have those really big full skirts, very Carrie Bradshaw meets Charlotte kind of stuff, and it’s just so fun. They have really forward thinking outfits there, so that’s one of my favorites. If you’re looking for just a really fun crazy dress, or a really cool top that’s really over the top; I really like ASOS.

Juli Bauer: It’s too bad they don’t stock more sizes, because I feel like I find a million things and they’re sold out by the time I check out. They’re like; oh, sorry, it’s already sold out.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, that’s exactly how it works. It’s mind numbing.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, it’s dumb. But they rock, so.

Cassy Joy: They do. If you’re one of those people who just wants to find; you like going to a party, and you’re wearing this big billowy sleeved dress, with this really cool hemline, and people are like; oh my gosh, your dress is amazing, and you want to say, yeah it was under $100; you know, that’s the place to go is ASOS.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: Because they have those kinds of deals. And then the last one I would say is, I think its Revolve clothing.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Have you shopped there?

Juli Bauer: Yeah, I just bought a swimsuit there. Just yesterday.

Cassy Joy: Awesome. I really like Revolve. They have some really basic dresses that I like a lot. So yeah, those are some of my favorites.

Juli Bauer: Love it. Those are all 3 pretty much my top favorite.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: And I’m going to put this out here, just because summer is creeping along, and I just recently started shopping on this website. I haven’t bought anything from it, but SwimwearWorld.com has every swimsuit known to man. It has so many, so if you have any trips coming up, or you’re just getting ready for summer and want a cute swimsuit, that website is awesome. I haven’t bought anything from there, so if it doesn’t turn out well, it’s not my fault.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

7. One food Cassy cannot stand [34:16]

Juli Bauer: But, I just am recommending that to everybody. Ok, what is the one food, and it can be anything, that you cannot stand. That you’re like; no, I will not be eating that.

Cassy Joy: Oh man, it’s kind of a heartbreaker. I really like; well, I do not like liver.

Juli Bauer: Agreed.

Cassy Joy: Ugh.

Juli Bauer: So gross. Who was like; oh yeah, I want to eat something that just filters. It’s just a filter system.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So gross.

Cassy Joy: Oh, that really is what it’s like. Chicken livers are more palatable to me. Because I like; what is it, pate.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I don’t mind that; but beef liver, really, I just have an immediate aversion to it. I remember I was working with US Wellness Meats once upon a time, and Austin still makes fun of me for this. We were working on a recipe partnership, and they wanted me to come up with 3 recipes for them, and they were like; you can pick any kind of protein you want from our shop, and we’ll send them to you so you can create the recipes. And I was like, cool that sounds like fun! And I wanted to challenge myself with these recipes. So I chose a duck; that was a good choice.

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: Not very many roasted ducks; whole ducks out there. I did ribs, another semi-normal one. And then I did pet burger, which is their ground meat for dogs, and I made dog treats. And then I did liverwurst. And I had this idea that I was just going to pony up; I was going to get the liverwurst and I was going to find a way to make it really delicious; and I hated it. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: So I couldn’t publish that recipe. But liver is one. And then another food that is the heartbreaker that I just can’t have but I really used to love were Brussels sprouts. They just make me sick.

Juli Bauer: Oh no! That is so sad.

Cassy Joy: Isn’t it? I will still eat them sometimes. Kind of like; you know, we all know that alcohol is not great for us but we drink it sometimes anyways. That’s me with Brussels sprouts.

Juli Bauer: That is such a bummer.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I know.

Juli Bauer: Like, so many people, if I have Brussels sprouts and somebody who feels like they need to make bathroom jokes on my Instagram.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Will be like; nobody wants to be around you tonight! I’m like; I don’t get farts from Brussels sprouts.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: I didn’t know that was an actual thing that people got.

Cassy Joy: It is. It is for some people. There’s a whole Brussels recipe in my book where you don’t have to chop them up, you just roast them whole in the pan with lemon juice. It’s so good! Oh my gosh, I can’t even. They’re so, so delicious, and so easy. And I remember when I made them for the book, the ones that are pictured there, I ate them entirely by myself. I ate the entire batch of Brussels sprouts, because I was just snacking on them all day long while I was cooking and photographing {laughs} and I had to take the next day off because I was just in so much pain. It was awful.

Juli Bauer: Well, ok, Cass. You’re not supposed to eat an entire bag.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Of Brussels sprouts. So that’s where you went wrong.

Cassy Joy: Oh.

Juli Bauer: It’s like; oh, I bought this cake and ate the whole cake. Well, ok.

Cassy Joy: I don’t think cakes good for me. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Yeah! I don’t think it works for me.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

8. Cassy’s pet peeves [37:33]

Juli Bauer: Ok. This; I like this question. If you ever follow Cassy on Snapchat, she’s the most positive human being you will ever see, and you’re like; this has to be an act. And I can swear to you this is not an act. This is literally how Cassy is. She’s this perky all the time. So I want to know what your pet peeves are. I think mine is just when people are late. I hate when people are late; which is funny, because you tend to be late to things.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: But somehow I’m never annoyed with you, I don’t really get it. But, what are your pet peeves?

Cassy Joy: You know, one of my pet peeves is a lack of responsibility {laughs} which is funny, because being late shows a lack of responsibility.

Juli Bauer: {laughs} It’s fine. It’s fine.

Cassy Joy: I’m working on it. I really am. I remember once upon a time, Juli, you very, very politely brought up. You were like; you said something along the lines of, I’m one of those people I’d rather be 15 minutes early than 2 minutes late, or something like that. I can’t remember what you said.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, if you’re not 15 minutes early, you’re late.

Cassy Joy: Yes.

Juli Bauer: Yeah, I probably said that. I say that a lot. What an old b*tch I am. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} I was like, alright, universe, life lessons from Juli. I am going to take that to heart. {laughs} And I’m doing so much better, I think you’d be proud of me. But, that aside, it really makes me crazy when folks don’t take responsibility for their actions.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: So, you know. Ok, let’s just address the late things how I think some things can be a little bit different. Showing up late, and saying, “Oh I’m late because there was traffic, or because there was this, or because,” I don’t know, there was an accident, whatever it is. The kids wouldn’t finish dinner on time; whatever it is, that’s avoiding responsibility. You were late because you left late.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: Right? Or you’re late because you didn’t plan properly. And that distinguishing factor is really; it’s something that gets under my skin so much, Juli, that I actually talked to Austin, my husband about it recently. I was like; I need to work on this because it annoys me too much when people don’t take responsibility for their actions. I do the things I say I’m going to do. Sometimes real life interjects, and I have to say; I don’t know, I can’t follow through on that, but I own it, you know?

Juli Bauer: Yeah. Owning it is key. I say that all the time, with fitness stuff. I’m like, take responsibility for your own life. And that is in regards to what you put in your mouth, and how you take care of yourself, and how you deal with stress. It is your responsibility at the end of the day; it is nobody else’s responsibility.

And at the gym; we have people who come late all the time, because Denver traffic has just gotten out of control. And it really annoys me; I try not to take it as much just because traffic has gotten so bad here. But it makes me so much happier when someone is like, “I’m so sorry I’m late, traffic was such a b*tch today.” And I’m like, cool. If you come in and you’re like; oh, tying my shoes, I’m going to go pick my nose. Those things; like take responsibility for whatever happened. Whatever came up, whatever you did wrong, whatever it is. Responsibility, man. That’s adulting in its own.

Cassy Joy: It is. Own it. Own it. And that’s true for everything in life. You know, when people; and this sounds so heartless, coming from somebody who I feel like my job is to be an encourager, so I hope this doesn’t sound really heartless. But even when people have health problems, and they don’t want to take responsibility for the things that happened to get them to where they are. I’m not saying I want people to beat themselves up; but you’re never going to get out of it if you don’t recognize the role you played to place yourself there. You know?

Juli Bauer: Yeah. And taking reasonability for the things you need to do moving forward.

Cassy Joy: Yeah.

Juli Bauer: We all make mistakes or bad choices, and then it’s what you do with the future and all those little steps to make up for those “mistakes”. That’s what really shapes you as a human, I think.

Cassy Joy: Totally. It does. You have the power. That’s the cool part. That’s the positive spin, right? You have the power to drink more water, and you have the power to go to bed early, and you have the power to cook instead of going to eat out, and workout instead of, I don’t know whatever. You know?

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: And that’s really cool. That’s kind of liberating to think that we really do have the power to shape our lives. There’s a definitely upswing to taking responsibility. I highly encourage it. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: For sure. Take responsibility people.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

9. The best and worst of marriage [42:27]

Juli Bauer: Ok, so you just kind of mentioned Austin a little bit; and for all that don’t know, Cassy got married this past year, and it was adorable, except there was a flood pretty much at her wedding.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: And there was pouring rain, and everyone had to watch from afar in a barn while they got married in the dumping rain. So other than that, it was the perfect wedding. She had a sh*t ton of awesome food. So, you know, congratulations on getting married. And I just want to ask you; what is the best part about being married, and what is the worst part?

Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, what a good question!

Juli Bauer: {laughing} Only took a week to find that one.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} I would say that the best part of being married; oh my gosh. Well, I am head over heels in love with my husband. I think he’s one of the coolest guys I’ve ever known. And this is just what comes to mind; I haven’t rehearsed this answer, but one of the things that comes to mind is the best is that I just get to do life with this awesome dude. It’s so cool that the person I get to spend my life with is this, I don’t know, he’s my best friend, and he’s really funny, and he’s really smart, and he’s such an encourager in and of himself. Man, I don’t know, it’s just so cool I have to pinch myself. I had a crush on Austin for 7 whole years before we went on a date. And he was my high school; no, sorry, he was my college crush and he had no idea.

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: And I don’t know. This is silly, but sometimes I really do have those pinch me moments; even know, we’ve been married about a year, and I’ll have those pinch me moments where I think; “gosh I really hope this isn’t a dream.” It’s just so fun.

Juli Bauer: Stop it. Oh my god. Stop.

Cassy Joy: I sound so cheesy.

Juli Bauer: You’re so cheesy right now, but I love it. I love that part about you. Austin really is awesome. When I was out in Texas with Cassy, getting ready for this filming that we had to do for the Project; Austin cooked us breakfast, he helps get all these clothes ready and taken over. He drove us everywhere. He helped so much, he’s awesome. He’s just a little gem, and he’s a smartass, which makes it even better.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} He is a smartass. He’s such; and he really likes to jar with Juli. You’re like his favorite. He’s like, “Yes, someone who will be a smartass with me.”

Juli Bauer: Yeah. We can just be so mean to each other, but then just hug it out, too.

Cassy Joy: It’s so true.

Juli Bauer: He’s awesome. So, what’s the worst part? And I know you’re going to be like; “Well nothings’ bad because Austin is wonderful.” So, I’ll give you some examples.

Cassy Joy: {Laughing}

Juli Bauer: My husband, who is very wonderful and great. I don’t talk about him much, but he leaves all the drawers of our actual drawers, he leaves them all open. And they’re really short drawers, they don’t store that much, and that’s what he makes as an excuse. But I somehow shut all my drawers just fine.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: So he leaves these drawers open all the time. And he’s growing a beard, and I’m so not into it. So that’s the worst part of marriage so far. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughing} Oh that’s amazing.

Juli Bauer: So what’s yours, Cass. What’s yours?

Cassy Joy: This is so mean.

Juli Bauer: {laughing} Is it though, Cassy? Is it?

Cassy Joy: {laughs} So, Austin. I don’t know if he’s got a special microphone in his mouth while he’s chewing.

Juli Bauer: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: {laughs} He is so loud.

Juli Bauer: Does he chew with his mouth open.

Cassy Joy: No! Juli, it is mind boggling. I will literally sit there at the dinner table, and stare at him in wonder. I’m like; his mouth is closed, but it sounds like we’re in an amphitheater.

Juli Bauer: Does he know you feel that way?

Cassy Joy: Yes, but I try not to remind him very often. Because it’s not exactly a warm fuzzy.

Juli Bauer: Totally.

Cassy Joy: And he does the best he can, but you know, what I have to do to not be totally grossed out, is I have to sit down and eat while he’s eating. And I will slow myself down so I take as long to eat as he does. Because if I’m chewing, I can’t hear him chewing. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: {laughing}

Cassy Joy: So.

Juli Bauer: And it’s funny, those little tendencies you start to see just living with each other more often. And you’re like; ok; ok Jackson, calm your tits.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: The mailman came, calm your tits. Ok, so those little tendencies; and you can totally see that with married people, how they just move on with it. They’re like; oh, that’s kind of annoying, but whatever. And they just move forward. I feel like that’s kind of what you have to do. You have to find ways. Like eating louder so you don’t hear your husband.

Cassy Joy: {laughs} That’s it. That’s exactly it. So there was a problem, solution; took responsibility {laughs}.

Juli Bauer: Took responsibility. There you go.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: See, it all comes full circle.

Cassy Joy: it does.

10. Listener question about fasting [47:47]

Juli Bauer: Ok, well those were my lovely questions for you. So I thought I’d turn to the readers of Instagram; good old Instagram. I just asked them if they had any quick questions. I just posted this like an hour ago, so I’m sure other comments will come in, and I apologize if I don’t get to your comment. I’m just recording this an hour after I post this, so it will be gone soon.

So let’s see. I liked this question; ok, ok, ok, I lost it.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: {laughs} Ok yes. Bartley Ava. {laughs} She says, “What are your thoughts on fasting? I’ve heard that fasting once a week for 12 to 24 hours is proven to be beneficial for your digestion, sleep, etc. have you heard any information on this? I wanted to try a 12-hour fast, but I get so hungry.” That’s fair. That’s fair. So what do you think about this, Cass?

Cassy Joy: That’s a good question. I think fasting works for some folks, and some people it doesn’t. So you’ve kind of got to go down the rabbit hole of asking yourself some better and better questions. There’s a fasting book that just came out by Jimmy Moore that I think is pretty solid; and I actually invited him on the podcast to talk about it. You know; something that I think people forget is when you go to sleep, you fast.

Juli Bauer: Yeah. Exactly.

Cassy Joy: You’re actually fasting when you sleep. So if you have an idea; yes, I do agree that it is healthy to give your body a break, your digestive system a break so that we can rest and repair and focus on being healthier humans overall, and we’re not just constantly digesting food. So let’s say you eat dinner at 6:30 p.m. and you finish dinner at 7, and then you go to bed let’s say 9:30, 10 o’clock. You wake up and you have breakfast at 7:30, you just did a 12-hour fast.

Juli Bauer: I love that.

Cassy Joy: So that is intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting means that you give yourself a nice long break just like that. So I wouldn’t stress so much about it. There aren’t really any magic; I’m not big into magic fix all, big flashy concepts. I think it can be really cool, and a really cool way; just like ketogenic diets can be really cool for people for really short term, if you’re really, really careful with it. But for the most part, just remember that living real life, you’re probably already doing a lot of those habits.

Juli Bauer: I love that. I touched on this on my podcast a couple of weeks ago, because somebody asked about intermittent fasting. And I think people have to be careful with that; because I did that when I was first dabbling with paleo, but it was just a way to really enhance my addicted behaviors, so I went from starving myself to binge eating, to paleo, to intermittent fasting. All these strict behaviors that weren’t leading to an actual healthy behavior all around. So I think depending on the person, they kind of have to remember that; are you doing this because it’s healthy for your digestion, or are you doing this to be like; “Oh, I didn’t eat for 12 to 24 hours.” Because that’s how I was. I was like; “Oh I’m not going to eat for a day.” And then I was like, “what the f*ck am I doing? I’m so f*cking hungry, and I hate my life.” It wasn’t leading to a healthy feeling. So I love the overnight thing, because I don’t think people always think of sleep as being a part when they’re not eating. Hopefully you’re not sleep eating through the night.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: But that’s, you know; you’re just intermittent fasting. I never thought of it like that.

Cassy Joy: You are. And that’s why breakfast has the name it has; you’re breaking the fast.

Juli Bauer: Oh! Stop it. You know everything.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} I do not.

Juli Bauer: Whoa.

Cassy Joy: But yeah, that’s, I mean, if this is to help you with a reminder, take a deep breath. If you really are curious about what fasting can do for you, especially short term fasting like that, just eat an earlier dinner, and try to not snack before bed.

Juli Bauer: Oh my god, I love that. Break-fast. Break-fasting. Are you guys blind? F*ck, I f*cked that up.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

11. Listener question timing of meals [51:58]

Juli Bauer: We’ll move on. This kind of ties into this last question; and this is from Tiffy Rios31. She asks, “Do you only eat when hungry, or do you eat meals at certain time frames, like 4 hours apart, and what are your thoughts on snacking? Is it necessary? If so, how many snacks?” And I know you kind of touch upon this in your book. So it would be cool if you could just kind of do a short version of that.

Cassy Joy: Yeah, for sure. I’ll try to keep it in a nutshell. So, I know I do not eat only when I’m hungry. Because that’s actually something that I did back when I was first starting paleo, and just like Juli was saying; you were saying that the fasting was another form of an addictive behavior. Only eating when I was hungry was a habit that I had back from when I would calorie restrict to an extreme. I would only eat if I was hungry, and I would immediately stop as soon as that hunger was slightly satiated. So that’s something that I intentionally don’t do.

Now that’s a concept; if you aren’t that strict with it, that can work really well for some people. But I’m a big believer in 3 square meals a day. I like to get up and have my breakfast. It’s not always exactly at the same time, because life happens. But I do my best to have breakfast in the morning within an hour, hour and a half of waking up. I have lunch, and I make lunch, and then I have a nice big dinner, and that works really well for me. Because sometimes I sit down and I’m working, and you’re working away, and you look up and oh my gosh I missed lunch, it’s 3 p.m. so hunger doesn’t always distract me enough to make me go eat a meal, but it’s always really important. I feel better when I eat. So I tend to lean on more of the time period side of things.

And then as far as snacking goes; you know, I think snacking can be a really powerful, positive tool when used purposefully. There were a lot of P’s in that sentence. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: {laughing} I like it.

Cassy Joy: But I also think it can be a slippery slope into accidentally sabotaging your really good efforts with food and fitness. So; I’ll talk about the exceptions to snacking first, so people don’t think I’m just this anti-snacking person. I think that the exceptions to snacking when they’re a really good thing to use, is let’s say, definitely pre or post workout. Let’s say a pre workout would be; let’s say you’re working out at 6 p.m. and lunch was 6 hours ago; you’re probably hungry. If you’re going to show up at a workout actually hungry, then a snack is important to have. You know; a little protein, a little fat. And then a post workout would be important if your next meal isn’t within the next hour or so. So a post workout with some healthy carbohydrates and some protein would be really good to put in there; so that’s a form of a strategic snack.

Other strategic snacks would be; and this is one I use a lot. If I’m going to go out to eat with some friends, or I have a lunch meeting, or I’m going to a wedding, and there’s a buffet, and I know I’m expected to have a meal at all of these places, I will have a healthy snack before I go so I don’t show up starving and accidentally make some decisions that aren’t in line with my goals, or what I like to do. You know; I’m not showing up and I’m not going to dive head first into a wedding cake, because I had a couple of hardboiled eggs before I left the house. So that would be a really strategic snack. Does that answer the question mostly?

Juli Bauer: Hell yeah, it does Cass.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: I think that was the best answer ever. I would have been like; yeah, I like snacks! That would have been my answer.

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

12. Where does Cassy get her happy? [55:32]

Juli Bauer: So thank you Cassy for taking that. That is awesome. Here’s this one, is also. Just kind of ties in to just how great you are. Amelia la-la-la Krugg.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: She asks, “How is she just so darn jolly?” I love that she said darn. “How is she just so darn jolly all the time? What’s the secret to her positivity?” Tell us Cassy. Tell us.

Cassy Joy: {laughing} Oh man. I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t take life very seriously. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Juli Bauer: Yeah.

Cassy Joy: I don’t know. I don’t take myself too seriously. That’s not to say I don’t feel the weight of the responsibility of this job and talking to all these wonderful people all the time, and the responsibility and the weight of friendships and family and things like that; but I just really believe. My mom has an amazing sense of humor; she’s a complete goofball. She’s such a nut. I grew up listening to her talk like Daffy Duck; you know. She’s just a nut.

Juli Bauer: {laughs}

Cassy Joy: And that’s where I get; I do voiceovers for our pets, and that all comes from her. I don’t know; I just learned from her not to take things too seriously. And I just laugh stuff off. If anything is bothersome, I laugh it off, and if that doesn’t work, I just really believe; this is just a deep seated belief. I really believe that we’re given exactly what we can handle, and I think that’s a compliment when you face like a really big struggle. Every day is going to have its own struggles and its own uphill battles. And instead of thinking, “Ugh, I have to trudge through this.” I really do think of it, you guys, as “Wow, this is actually a kind of cool compliment! Because the universe thinks I can and am supposed to do this.” So I do. I just built the; it’s like building a muscle. Building willpower. I built this muscle of constantly looking for silver lining in everything.

And somebody asked me once upon a time on a show, they were like, “What would you say is your super power?” And I was like, I really think it’s silver lining. I can see it. It’s like smelling a smell or seeing a color. I can see silver lining, and that’s something that I’ve built over time, because it was important to me feeling like me, and being able to project what I want to project onto the world. So, I don’t know, I hope that answers it.

Juli Bauer: Well I think with people who eat healthy, and they work out, and they’re following their dreams and doing what they want to do; you just don’t have as many upset moments. Because you’re creating the day exactly how you want to create it. Sure, there are bumps in the road, but you are the person who has to solve them. And I think that brings great joy to a person, is problem solving for themselves and for their own company. And I think you have to do that every day, so why the hell else wouldn’t you be positive? You’re f*cking conquering your own life, you know?

Cassy Joy: {laughs} That’s it. You nailed it. That’s exactly what it is. Because there were definitely times where I was definitely more down in the dumps and I had a hard time being positive, and those were the times I felt like I was out of control. And, or that other people had influence over my life that I didn’t enjoy; they were bringing things into my life that I didn’t like. And you eventually you get to a point where it comes back around to this again; but you take reasonability. I had to take responsibility for those negative things in my life, and when I took responsibility for them being there, I allowed myself to remove myself from those situations. And I did. I moved jobs. I quit a job that was just sucking the life out of me.

Other small changes you make over time; and food, and fitness, were part of that; right? I took responsibility for how food was making me feel, and I changed it; and fitness, and sleeping, and drinking more water. So yeah.

13. Cassy and Juli working together [59:32]

Juli Bauer: Love it. Love it! Ok, I’m just going to take one more question, so apologies to anybody who asked a question, and we didn’t answer. But Cassy and I just love to talk so much, and we’re almost at pretty much an hour, so we’ve got to cut it off. Because you’ve got sh*t to do. We’ve got calls to make. We’ve got food to make!

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: So this last question, just because it ties us kind of both together. And it is from T-Christine19. “How did you two meet and decide to collaborate on the Fed and Fit book.” Would you like to take that one, Cass?

Cassy Joy: Sure. You know what; one morning, I drank too much coffee, and I felt really bold, and I was like; “I’m going to call Juli.” {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Which you did. She called me up.

Cassy Joy: I did. You know what; the genesis of the idea, I really think that everybody has their own thing that they’re really, really good at. Everybody has a strength. And maybe one of my strengths is taking crazy science, and turning it into understandable little snippets; making it conversational. But one of my strengths is not necessarily fitness programming, and I wanted the book to; I wanted it to be the best. Right? I wanted it to be the best representation, and in my own personal life, I seek help from other people who are really good at their jobs, and enroll them into things that I do. And this was just a natural progression of that. So I reached out to Juli, and asked if she would offer some of her expertise in that regard for the book; which she very, very graciously accepted.

And that part of it aside; a part of it is that she’s just so darn good at mixed fitness. But Juli and I; I always felt like she saw fitness and food and this whole transformative journey that people can go on in paleo, I think we saw it very similarly. It’s like we said in the show even, but it’s not necessarily just about doing a diet. But of the long haul. If you want to be in it for the long haul, it’s about learning how to make healthy decisions, and then just living that way. And I really wanted somebody to put my head together with that we could continue to foster that whole idea, and make the project better and better. So that’s why I invited her; and she made it so much better. {laughs} I’m still so gratefully.

Juli Bauer: And it’s so fun. It’s just so fun working with a cool ass person. It was so fun working with Cassy on this, and I just programmed the workouts in her book. So there are 28 workouts for her 28-day program, and it just; we filmed together in Vegas. We went out where our publisher lives, and we took all these shots of different fitness moves from stretching; different yoga poses, to what else did we do? Jumping squats and V-ups. All kinds of different movements that are in the book, so you have tutorials of how to do exactly every single movement. So it’s all in the book. It’s just an amazing book, you guys. I highly recommend it, because Cassy is the bomb.

Cassy Joy: You’re so kind. Well, and then Juli took it even further. She wrote modifications for all those workouts. Because I know some folks who are just getting started. They may have been a little intimidating, and it’s hard if you don’t already know how to modify a workout to just jump in and do that. So she created modifications for everybody, and that resource is available in the Project online. Which is really where a lot of this Project stuff happens. You can do a self-guided one with the book; no problem. Tons of people are doing that, especially this month. But we do have an online portal with the videos, like we talked about, where we kind of walk you through what to expect in each week. I don’t know; it was just like Juli said. It was just so fun, it’s so much more fun working with someone. It’s ironic that I love people as much as I do, and I work from home by myself with my dog. {laughs}

Juli Bauer: Right. Totally. Samesies. I have a dog lying on my side, farting on me at this point.

Cassy Joy: {laughs}

Juli Bauer: This is my daily life. {laughs}

Cassy Joy: {laughing} Oh I love it so much.

Juli Bauer: Like, I don’t’ want to get off this call, because then I’ll be alone again at home.

Cassy Joy: I know.

Juli Bauer: It’s so nice to actually talk to other human beings.

Cassy Joy: I know. Well thank you so much for having me on Juli; this really was so fun!

Juli Bauer: Thank you! So everybody, if you haven’t bought the Fed and Fit book, go grab it. Go to Costco and get it right now. You can get it the cheapest there probably. It’s on Amazon; you can get it at Barnes and Noble, and a bunch of just smaller places by you. And if your bookstore doesn’t have it, ask for it. Say, demand it. Get it from people. You guys will love it; and you can check out her Fed and Fit Project, and check out http://FedandFit.com which has all this information. And her Instagram; Fed and Fit. Pretty much just search all Fed and Fit. You’ll find her. She has all kinds of fashion stuff, and amazing stuff about beauty products; like natural beauty products. And she talks about Beautycounter. So go check her out guys! And thank you for being my first guest on the PaleOMG Uncensored podcast, Cassy.

Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh, I’m so honored. This was the most fun. Thanks Juli.

Juli Bauer: It was the best! Well I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I said “gay.”

Cassy Joy: {laughing}

Juli Bauer: Gah, this podcast is just; we’re crushing it.

Cassy Joy: We’re crushing it.

Juli Bauer: I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Keep kicking ass. Get your fitness on, and I will talk to you all soon. Bye guys!

    Love the podcast, love Cassy! Hoping to pick up the book at a Costco soon :).

    Juli – do you know why this episode was so echo-y? Sounded different than the previous episodes, and it was kind of distracting…

    Keep up the great work!
