Juli Bauer: Well hey there, guys. Welcome back. Hopefully it’s back. Hopefully, you’re here for the; I don’t know, what episode is this? 30th, 29th? Sh*t. I listen to My Favorite Murder all the time, and they have Steven, who does all the technical stuff, and knows what episode it is and all that jazz. I need a Steven. I need a Steven, guys, but I don’t like being around people. Ugh. Woe is me.
Anyways, how is everybody doing? Welcome back for another episode of PaleOMG Uncensored. I loved hearing your feedback last week that you liked the episode with Jason, because he’s a hoot. I wish I could have him as my cohost all the time. He would really throw me under the bus a lot, about some of my private life. Like, he, you know, so did. But, I could do the same to him. I kept some of that sh*t under wraps; just saying. But I’m glad you guys liked it, because he is so much fun. And I need to figure out more people to have on the show. I’m planning to have my friends Joy and Claire on from Girls Gone WOD podcast. And I was just on their podcast this week, so if you go to theirs, you can hear the interview I did with them. I do an episode; I think it was the 4th episode I’ve done with them. I try to do it every so often, because they are so much fun, and I get to go to Joy’s house, and we just record in her little office, and it’s the best. It’s cool being around people you like.
So, anywho. This week is a little crazy, because I leave for Dallas tomorrow. I’m recording this on Wednesday. Leave for Dallas tomorrow on Thursday, and then I get back on Saturday, and then I leave for Costa Rica on Thursday, and then I get back, I don’t know what day I get back. But I get back at midnight, and I leave at noon that day for Dallas again. So I’m freaking the f*ck out, because I’m just trying to finish up all my works. Because these were; the Costa Rica trip was already planned. Dallas was a little last minute, and the second Dallas trip was literally just planned last week. This just came up. So I just feel like I’m trying to bust out all this work that I didn’t have totally planned, and getting all the outfits done, and getting the outfits ready.
So the second trip to Dallas, I got invited to speak at this fashion event. I’m talking about kind of branding yourself, and it’s like the category about books, kind of, since I’ve written 3 cookbooks. So I’m talking about branding yourself. And I’m just so nervous for this event, because it’s all these fashion chicks, and me. Little old food blogger me. And I don’t know; what if I don’t know the answers to questions they have? If I don’t have the answers, I hire somebody to figure out the answers for me. Like, I’m not trying to; I don’t know. I don’t know, I’m so nervous for it.
And, so; this is a fashion event, so I’m trying to get my outfits all ready to go before I leave for Costa Rica, so I actually look put together at this event, instead of workout clothes. So I’m just nervous about this, if you can’t tell. But that’s what we’ve got going on. That’s what’s happening right now over here. Lots of recipes, lots of food photos, lots of fashion photos, and hopefully planning a trip out to Savannah, Georgia. Which I’ve never been to Savannah. And maybe to Tybee Island; I think that’s what it’s called? Ti-pee? Ti-bee? I don’t know. I don’t know what it is, I don’t know what it’s called, but I heard it’s cute. So I might be going there in May. {sigh} That’s what’s going on. Just lots of trips. Pretty f*cking cool. Lots of airports.
So anyways, that’s what’s been going on. And, I’ve been listening; a bunch of you guys recommended the new podcast, S-town, Sh*t Town, which is from the creators of Serial and This American Life. And I don’t listen to This American Life; listened to a couple of episodes, and was never interested. So I listened to both seasons of Serial and loved both of them. So I’ve been waiting for Serial to come out with something new. So I was super pumped about S-Town. And I haven’t finished the most recent episode, but I think it’s boring as f*ck. I was super interested, because the first episode includes murder. And then after that, it’s just like, this poor man. And I don’t know where the story is going. And I don’t know if they know where the story is going. But everybody is super into it; why? No offense to them, not trying to be rude. This is just my personal opinion. I’m not trying to put down this podcast. You should totally still listen to it. But, I don’t know. I’m into murder stuff. I don’t know; f*cking weird.
So I’ve been listening to that. That’s the only new updated podcast I’ve been listening to. So if you have any new recommendations, always let me know. I just love stories. But his story is not interesting me. {sigh}.
Ok, what else? What else do I have on the agenda? Today’s podcast is about random questions. So I always do this; I always put out every 5 or 6 episodes, I try to do a listener questions episode, because you guys always have such cool questions, and it really helps me come up with content. Especially on such late notice, like this, when I have to peace out of town real fast and I don’t have time to get anybody on the map, of the few people I like in this world, on the podcast. So, loving all your questions. Remember, if I don’t answer your question, you can always go to www.PaleOMG.com and you can ask a question there. I recommend you leave a question in a comment section, not emailing me, because I hate email and I respond to email probably once a year. It’s one of my really great features about myself. Yeah, once a year. So, send me a comment on Instagram, but on my blog I will write back right away. I always write back to comments there.
And, I have maybe 3 other listener question episodes to listen to, so if I don’t answer your question, it may be because I talked about it in a previous episode. So listen to all my episodes, because isn’t that the best thing to do? Binge listen to podcasts? It’s like binge watching on Netflix. Which I’m doing with the Office right now. I’ve binge-watched the Office probably 4 times; 4 times completely through. And I’m doing it again. And I love it. Why is the Office the best show of all time? I really want to figure out where I can watch the British Office, because I don’t know where to find it. I’m sure you can find it online, but I like watching it on my TV, so I want to find out how I can watch it on TV. Because I’d love to watch the British; the original; the OG version of the Office.
Wait; I was going to tell you one thing else about a show. Balls, I forgot. So anyways; go back in my podcasts, check out the previous question episodes, because I answer so many questions there. But if you ever have a question, come to my blog, I’m doing an awesome special offer with a meat company right now. I’ve been working with this meat company, and they send grass-fed, grass-finished, organic, pasture raised beef, meat, and pork straight to your doorstep. It’s so f*cking cool. Every month, a package shows up at my doorstep; I don’t even have to think about it, because you just set the date that you want. Anyways, you can read my blog post about it, but right now you get 2 free steaks plus $10 off your first order. They’re the best. I seriously love them. I love them so much that I’m talking about them on my podcast, when who the hell knows when you’re going to listen to this podcast. It could be 4 years from now, when you’re like; “Where the f*ck is my offer?!” Well, sorry. It’s 2017; I can’t offer this to you anymore.
1. Favorite underwear [11:02]
Ok, but anyways. Let’s get into questions, because these always take a little bit of time, and I’m finally; I get asked this question every single time, and I always forget to write it down. I don’t know why. I don’t know what the f*ck I’m thinking; but I get this question every single time. So I wanted to answer it right now, first and foremost. It’s in bold letters on my outline. Underwear. Every single time I get a question about underwear. “What underwear do you wear when you’re working out? When you’re wearing leggings and you don’t see an underwear line?” People are always like, “Are you wearing specific underwear?” I’m like, what are you talking about? I’m wearing a thong. I grew up in a generation; I guess I’m still considered a millennial, but I grew up in a generation where you just wear thongs. That’s what I wore when I was like; I don’t want a diaper line, no thank you. When I was whatever, 13, and hormonal, and f*cking psycho. So, I started wearing those thongs. {singing} Thong, thong, thong, thong, thong! So that’s what I wear.
And I know people have issues with it being up your ass, but I guess maybe you just get used to it. It’s like; who wants to wear a bra? It’s not comfortable. But you just wear it, because you want your boobs to stay in place. Well, I don’t want an underwear line. I don’t want it to look like I’m wearing a diaper; no thank you. So I wear thongs. And sometimes, it feels like they’re up your butt, and you pick your wedgie. That’s just life. I absolutely adore LuLuLemon thong underwear; they have the best thong underwear. I shared it in a post. I did a post with LuLuLemon recently, and I linked it in that post, specific underwear, because they are so f*cking awesome. And then I love the brand Zella; it might be Zella Body. I think there’s Zella and Zella Body, but they’re available at Nordstrom, and I love; they have this, what’s the word. I don’t know; this breathable underwear. So I get this breathable thong underwear. And they’re super comfortable. Sometimes you get a wedgie, sometimes you pick your butt, and that’s life. But I’d rather pick my butt in the corner than feel like I’m wearing a diaper, and have double bubble going on in the butt. No double bubble here.
So I hope that answers your questions. It’s just a thong, man. It’s just a straight up thong. So now for regular questions that actually were asked on Instagram this week. I hope that answered questions about underwear. But let’s get into the rest of it.
So I’m not including your names; I don’t know if people always want their names included, so I just decided I wouldn’t put the names in there, just for people’s privacy. So I hope you guys don’t mind that I’m not using your names.
2. Favorite go-to meal [13.54]
Ok, so the first question is, “Do you have a specific go-to meal? Does your husband cook often for you when you’re developing recipes? How can you work with Jackson always being so cute?” Oh my god, he is so cute. I literally just got up to check him outside; he’s sitting out basking in the sun, because it’s super sunny today, in Colorado, and it was snowing the past 2 days. So he’s loving the snow. But I get freaked out that someone is going to come into my backyard and steal him. Just because I’ve seen that happen to other people in Colorado, and they’re camera catches it. So I keep checking on him, and I see his little ears just poking out of the window.
So, our specific go-to meal literally is just whatever meat we have in the freezer. So, last night I pulled pork chops out of the freezer, defrosted those, and then I always pretty much make kale, because kale is so fast-cooking. I just cook it in a pan with lemon and olive oil. It just cooks up so quickly; it’s so easy, and it’s such a deep vitamin enriched green, it just doesn’t take much effort. And then I like to do some sort of starch; so I did fingerling potatoes last night, but I’ll do carrots, I’ll do plantains, I’ll do sweet potatoes. So I like having some sort of starch with dinner. And that’s my go-to. It’s nothing crazy. I’ll pan cook the meat, cook the kale in a pan, and then usually fingerling potatoes I’ll parboil them, smash them, and then put them in the oven to crisp up. And that’s my go-to.
And my husband does not cook often. So the other night, I posted on Instagram just the other day. I was like, “My husband cooked for me!” Ok, let’s first get one thing clear, except he’ll be pissed about this. I think he’s only listened to one podcast episode, and it was with Jason last week, so whatever. I chopped up all the veggies, I got everything into the pan, and I took him step by step through it while I made it. Got all the vegetables into the other pan. I had a lot of computer work to do, so I was standing right next to him in the kitchen working on my computer, telling him what to do. But I can’t not help. Because I want my food to taste a certain way, and I don’t like when meat gets over cooked and tough. I guess I’m just a b*tch about that. So I was like, “Hey, hey, hey, this needs to be turned down lower.” So I have a hard time pulling back the reins.
But he never cooks anymore. When we first started dating he cooked all the time, because I was always staying at his place. But nowadays that guy does not cook. I don’t know if he knows how to go to the grocery store. I don’t know what he eats when I’m out of town. But he still keeps his sh*t together. But, no, he does not cook. It’s very, very few and far between. And I have to ask him. Like I’ll work late on Wednesday nights at the gym, and I’ll come home hoping he made dinner, and he’s just there. And I’m like, motherf*cker. But I love him still. And I get it; he doesn’t know what to do. He’s very scared that I’m going to swat his hand and take over. So yeah, those are my answers.
3. Bone broth [16:57]
This next question; “Bone broth; do you ever make your own, and do you drink it or just cook with it? Also, what’s your opinion on Instant Pot. Is it worth buying?” OK, I don’t make my own bone broth because I just don’t care enough. I’m not; I think bone broth is so incredibly helpful when you’re trying to heal your gut, and I’m not trying to do that. I just don’t want my house to smell like bone broth. I just don’t. I don’t really like the smell of slow cooker when the food has been cooking; it makes me feel sick to my stomach. So I don’t make bone broth very often. I love Kettle and Fire bone broth, and I really love Bonafide bone broth. Both you can find at the store. I love both of them, they’re awesome. And you can drink both of those. I don’t think bone broth tastes that good, unless I add salt to it. But I just don’t drink it by itself; I only cook with it.
And I highly recommend getting an Instant Pot. I think it is absolutely worth every penny. I love mine so much. I cook with it all the time, and I’m sharing Instant Pot recipes on a regular basis. And I think it just tastes so much better than cooking stuff in a slow cooker, because slow cooker, almost everything tastes the same. Instant Pot just, it makes everything so tender and so delicious. So I highly recommend getting an Instant Pot, if you don’t have one. They take up a lot of room for sure, so if you don’t have room, it’s not a huge deal if you don’t have one you’re going to be fine. But they are definitely awesome.
4. Workouts on vacation [18:22]
Ok, next question; this one asks. “When you and your husband travel together, is he also motivated to do workouts, adventure excursions, and try to eat according to how you would at home? I know it’s a vacation, but like you, I feel better if I keep up with some things. If he doesn’t have any desire to do those things, is there anything that helps to motivate him to do it?”
My husband is super outdoorsy. He wakeboards and wake surfs and mountain bikes. So he is down for anything that has to do with excursions. And he is more into excursions than I am, so it actually gets me outdoors doing more than I usually would by myself. And he is hit or miss. Sometimes he wants to do workouts; I would say he doesn’t want to do workouts as much as I do when he’s on vacation. He works out 5 days a week. But when he’s on vacation, he’s just a more chill person, and he likes to just do the outdoor activities.
So, this last vacation we were on in San Diego; I did workouts and he didn’t. Then before that, he’s done workouts while I’ve been doing workouts. When we were in Scottsdale, he did a workout when I was working out too. So it’s just whatever he wants to do. And I’m not trying to motivate him. He can stay motivated on his own, and it’s his vacation too. So if he wants to stay chill, and not workout, it doesn’t change anything about my day. I’m still going to, and still going to do exactly what I want to do. So I don’t do anything to try to motivate him, I just let him do whatever he wants to do. That’s how I handle that.
5. PaleoFx survival guide [20:04]
This next one; “I’m going to PaleoFx for the first time. Super excited. I know that you’ve been there many times. Would love a survival guide; what to wear, how to pace myself. Loved your travel tips podcast, and totally agree it’s not hard to stay on track with food with traveling.” She said, “Just do your research.” So true. I liked doing that travel episode.
So, PaleoFx is lots of walking and lots of eating. So I just wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. And bring snacks; if you’re stuck inside all day at PaleoFx, there are all kinds of snacky foods that you get to try, but it’s usually like nut butters, chocolate, and jerky. And if you want to have more than that, make sure you eat right beforehand, especially if you’re going to be there for a while, or have something that’s a little bit more substantial in your purse that you could eat that will tide you over. Just because you could get overwhelmed with snack foods, and then you’re eating out for most meals, and trying the amazing Austin food. So it can be just a little bit overbearing on your stomach. So just make sure you eat ahead of time. And bring water, because they usually don’t have water around there. But they keep changing every year, so it’s different every year. I’m not going this year, but it keeps growing. Definitely bring a sh*t-ton of water, and just drink a ton of water.
6. Making a to-do list [21:25]
Next one. “You’ve talked a lot about your daily to-do list, and I’m curious if you have certain template or planner. I’m a pretty busy bee with a tendency to procrastinate. I’d love to know a little bit about your daily/weekly organizing.” And I literally; I do not do anything fancy whatsoever. I use the Notes app in your phone. I don’t know if you have to download it; I think I downloaded it. I don’t think it comes on there. So you download it, and yeah. It’s literally the simplest; it looks like a notepad. It’s nothing fancy. And then I just make my to-do list. And I do every single day. So at this point, I have my next two weeks planned out already, because I need to make sure I get all these certain posts done, and recipes done, and outfits planned. So I have the next two weeks planned out day to day, what time I’m going to get my workout in, when I need to coach at the gym; everything. So I don’t use anything special, I just have the Notes section, and I just plan out week by week by week what it looks like. I hope that helps.
7. Soda water [22:39]
Let’s see. “I heard during one of your earlier podcasts that you drink soda water. Is there any truth to the statement that soda water is not as hydrating, and it’s better to drink plain water? I love soda water, I was bummed when someone told me it isn’t good for you. I drink a lot of regular water, too, but sometimes I just want bubbles.” You know, I have no idea. I don’t know why it wouldn’t be as good for you. I don’t know if the chemical breakdown of adding; what do they add? Carbon dioxide or something like that, to the water to make it bubbly. I don’t know if that’s true. I just slightly remember no chemistry.
So, I don’t know if that’s true. I’m sure a little Google research would tell you more than I could. But it’s just like anything; it’s like having a cup of orange juice once in a great while is not a big deal. When you’re having a cup of orange juice every single day, that’s a lot of added sugar. So if you’re drinking soda water for every single drop of water you’re drinking, then I don’t think it’s the best idea. But I don’t know, you know. I try to drink just a bunch of water, and then I drink soda water whenever I’m out with friends or I just need something different at the end of the night, I’m just sick of my regular water and just want to keep making sure I’m staying hydrated. I will have that. But yeah, it sounds like you already drink regular water, so I don’t think it’s really worth worrying about. But Google research probably does more; gives you more answers. {laughs} That’s what I always turn to, just good old Google.
8. Motivation while working at home [24:20]
Ok. Let’s see; “What are your tips for staying motivated and productive when you work from home?” I think staying productive and motivated all has to do with making sure you love what you do, but also planning out your day. So I have really bad ADD, and I get distracted super easily. So I just go back and forth between things. So I’m like; “Ok, I need to get my podcast done, but I just don’t want to do it quite yet. Ok, I’m going to edit photos, and then once I’m done editing photos; ok, I’m going to clean my office a little bit before I get started.” So I’m always staying on task with something that needs to get done, but I’m just switching it up between things as I go.
I always plan out things. I always try to take a couple of walks during the day so I just stay kind of active and let my brain wander, and don’t get too bored and too cabin fever. And breaking up my day, maybe going to get a coffee, or going to get lunch somewhere. That keeps me feeling the most productive and motivated with my job. But I really, really love my job. So I think it’s easy to stay motivated. It’s just making sure I stay on task every day. And those to-do lists; to-do lists are the f*cking best. Because I’m like; “Oh, I don’t want to do that right now. What am I going to do? Oh, I’ll just bust this out while I’m doing this other thing.” So I think to-do lists are awesome, because they just keep you on track with getting everything done, because it’s there and it’s staring back at you, and then you’ll finish it.
9. Balancing blogging life with home life [25:59]
Next one. “Talk about what it’s like to be a blogger, social media professional with a hubby who isn’t, please. Wondering if I go through what others go through.” I don’t totally know what you mean. I don’t know; I think it’s just like any other job, kind of. The only thing that I don’t love is if we’re on a trip together and I have to get business stuff done. I don’t really like taking Instagram stories or doing Snapchat when I’m with my husband, because I just think it’s weird when someone is talking on your phone when you’re with the other person. So that’s the only hard part, I have to find balance between what work I have to get done and sharing that stuff on social media while still keeping my personal life under wraps, and not having my husband feel annoyed with me. But I haven’t had any issues. So that’s the only thing that’s kind of weird. But nothings different. I feel like I just keep him out of my social media world. I don’t know if that answers your question. Sorry, I just don’t know how to answer it totally.
10. Egg free breakfast [27:18]
Next question; “Do you have any quick breakfast ideas? Eggs and nuts make me break out, too, so I’m struggling with what to eat in the morning.” So, just check out my Instagram. I share my breakfast all the time, and my normal go-to is some sort of sausage. I really like Pedersons Farms. I like Mulay’s, and I like Applegate Farms. Those three I use on a regular basis for my breakfast sausage. And then I’ll have some sort of green, like arugula or if I have leftover kale. And then I’ll usually add plantains, because I’ve really been liking plantains for breakfast lately. So I’ll have half a plantain. And that’s my go-to breakfast. No eggs included, and it’s super easy. So go to my Instagram, because I always have a ton. I do almost daily posts of what my breakfast looks like. So hopefully that helps.
11. Keto diet [28:11]
Ok. “You might have answered this before; what’s your opinion on the keto diet? I would like to hear more opinions on this diet. It keeps rising everywhere. From my knowledge, one should only be on keto diet if they suffer from nerve malfunctions, such as having epilepsy.”
Yes, keto is big, huge right now. Everybody is like, keto, keto, keto. Whatever, whatever, whatever. And I think I was kind of on a keto diet accidentally when I first started paleo, because I was very, very low-carb and I was super high fat. And when I first did that, when my body started using fat instead of carbohydrates, I lost a lot of weight. But over time, as an athlete, doing that super low-carb was not a good idea for me.
So it did not work for me long-term, when I look back at that. And I didn’t know what it was called, and I didn’t know. I do remember this one person; I will never name names. I wish I could name names on here. The gossip that goes on in our little blogging world. But, there was one person, we were at this paleo event and this blogger was eating keto; and we had, oh my god, this was the worst f*cking dinner. This was like a PaleoFx dinner years ago, and it was the worst dinner I’ve ever been to; ever. And they served us sweet potatoes; they looked like sticks. Like a carrot stick; like square carrot stick. So it looked like that, so I thought it was carrots, and I bit into and I thought it was carrot because it was hard. They were serving us slightly blanched sweet potatoes. Like, do you ever want to eat; it reminds me of Chad on the Bachelorette eating a sweet potato. Like, what? I don’t want to eat a raw sweet potato. It was so weird.
Anyways; so they serve us these sweet potatoes, and he’s like, “Well I can’t eat that.” And he pulls out sticks of butter and just starts eating the butter. Some people are into eating butter; I’m 100% not into eating butter, because it’s f*cking gross. You put butter on goddamn toast. Gluten free toast. But, gross. I f*cking hate just when people eat butter, it grosses me out. And people do it all the time. They’ll put ghee on chocolate; I’m like, that is so gross. Whatever.
So that made me feel weird. Just imagine a guy pulling out butter and eating that at the dinner table. And we’re all hating our lives, because we’re eating raw sweet potato. That dinner could not end. It was in the cutest location ever on the sweetest farm, but man it sucked.
Anyways. I have not tried the keto diet; I don’t know enough about the keto diet. I know keto works for a friend who has epilepsy, and it works amazing for him. I’m pretty sure Diane Sanfilippo has maybe dabbled in keto, or has talked about it, so she’s worth looking into. And my friend, Lexi Davidson. She was on the podcast recently of LexisCleanKitchen.com. I think she might have talked about it on her blog. So they’re both worth looking into, and chatting with because they might have more answers.
Me, personally, I need a higher carbohydrate. I feel better when I eat higher carbohydrate, and I’ve lost weight with eating higher carb. And that works for me. Of course, bodies change over time, and I don’t know if that will always be that way, but that’s what works for me better at this point. So no keto for me.
12. Transitioning to CrossFit [31:41]
Ok, next question. “How did you go from doing home workouts to going to a CrossFit gym? I would like to join a CrossFit gym, but feel intimidated to go.” So I just kept working out at a regular gym for a while. You should not feel intimidated. There’s no point in feeling intimidated, because honestly everybody feels intimidated when they walk in there. Whether they’re a seasoned athlete or they are a beginner. Everybody feels nervous, everybody feels intimidated, and people feel that way when they’ve been doing CrossFit for a long time, and they know they have a really hard workout coming up.
So, I don’t think you need to do, or get to a certain point. I think you can just start CrossFit and kick ass at it. Just go in, and get the first time over with. Meet somebody, go with a friend, get to know the coach, and you’re going to feel more confident right away. But don’t feel intimidated, don’t feel like you need to be a certain point. Crossfitting is for every single person out there. Just understand, intimidation is a common feeling with the unknown. So just let it go and walk on in there.
13. Figure competition [33:00]
Next question. “Would you ever compete in a bikini or figure competition?” Absolutely f*cking not. No way, no how. No offense to anyone who does that out there. For me, and the insecurities that I’ve gotten past, and the feeling with foods that I’ve gotten past over the years, doing a figure competition would f*cking ruin me. First, I don’t think it’s good what you do to your body, and I think you really f*ck up your metabolism at the end when you’re pretty much starving yourself, and not drinking any water. I think you can really mess with your hormones, and mess with your metabolism.
And then, I mean you’re starving yourself. How often that I see every single person I’ve watched do a figure competition blows up afterwards. And it’s really hard to not, because you want to eat certain foods, and you’ve restricted yourself so much, and for certain personalities, that really fucks with your mind. So for me, if I restricted myself and starved myself, I would eat to no end. I would be depressed because I didn’t look how I looked on stage; which obviously is not something you keep. So I would be so upset that I wasn’t my figure self, and it would just f*ck with my mind so much. So, that does not interest me. I don’t want to stand up on stage in a bikini in front of people.
I post swimsuits in my fashion posts, and that’s the most that I want to do. I do not want to stand up in heels, lean over, and you almost see my vagina. I just can’t do it. More power to the women out there, and men who are out there, who can do that. But me, that would make me so unhappy. So I would never want to do it. That’s how I feel about that.
14. Follow-up to lash lift fiasco [34:57]
This next question. “Did you ever end up leaving a bad review for the eyelash tinting place?” Ok. So, if you didn’t hear me talk about this on previous podcast. I went to this place for lash tinting, and lash lifting. So I loved my lash tint; they did such a good job. But the lash lifting, instead of perming right at the base of the eyelash, they permed the entire eyelash. So the eyelash curled into itself. So I couldn’t put on mascara; I couldn’t even put on fake eyelashes because I couldn’t get to my lid. They were so fucked up. I called the manager; she had me back in and she tried to pull some anti-perming stuff through it. And it kind of worked, but not really, and she didn’t refund me. So I just wanted; I never complain. I don’t write Yelp reviews, and I don’t write negative Amazon reviews. I’m not that kind of person. Sh*t happens sometimes, and that’s how it has to be. If someone fixes the issue, cool.
But I get bad reviews all the time on anything that I do, whether it’s how I look, or a book I wrote, or a podcast that I recorded. So I’m not one who wants to leave bad reviews. But I was really unhappy; she should have refunded, and she just did not really take responsibility for what had happened, and how she was going to change that moving forward. So I did end up leaving a review on Yelp, and I did say in the Yelp review that I would definitely go there for lash tinting, and I recommend lash tinting because they did a great job with that. But the lash lifting, I would never recommend anyone go there, because it’s going to take like 10 weeks for the lashes to grow out completely. So I did leave a review. I think it might have been my first Yelp review ever. And she never wrote back. The manager wrote back to everybody else, but she didn’t write back to me. So there’s that, guys.
But I did sandwich it with compliments, because they really did do a good job with the tinting, and I wanted them to know. Ok, so I’m not a total f*cking b*tch, ok? Ok? Ok.
15. Eating larger, less frequently, or smaller more frequent meals [37:24]
Let’s see. “What are your thoughts on 3 meals a day versus several small meals to boost your metabolism? I try to listen to my body and eat when I’m hungry, but I also try to do mini-meals so I don’t over-eat.”
I mean, I think everybody’s different. I don’t know. I don’t really understand the science, nor have I looked into it what it means by more meals boosting your metabolism. I don’t really know. And if that works for you, that’s awesome. And maybe that works for your schedule. I like to do 3 solid meals a day, but then I have maybe a mini-meal between meals, where I’m having a snack or two. But that’s just what works for my body. And that’s what I like. I would rather have a bigger meal than have a smaller meal where I’m like, “Well, I’m still kind of hungry. But I’m going to have a meal in 3 hours.” So I’d just rather have a bigger meal. That’s what works for me.
Hi doggie! You want to come up here? You want to come sit with me?
16. Training Jackson [38:24]
Let’s see; next one. Oh this is perfect, since Jackson is staring at me. Here’s a Jackson question. “I would literally do anything for a Frenchie, but my boyfriend is on the team adopt a mix breed; which I totally support. What do you do with him when you and your husband are traveling. Was he easy to train? How long do you ever leave him home alone? Any troubles or important things to know for first-time Frenchie owners.”
Ok, so Jackson’s totally the best. When I travel, or when my husband is traveling with me or he’s traveling as well, my sister-in-law watches him a lot. She lives in Colorado, and she adores him. She lived with us for the past 2 years, so it was easy because she was just coming home here. But she will watch him when we’re gone. And if she can’t watch him, or if she has a crazy schedule, then one of my good friends loves him. Her and her boyfriend; they love animals, first of all I think they have 46 dogs. (I think they have 3). But they love Jackson, and love him staying there. So he just stays with her and her boyfriend, and he’s so happy and kind of sad to leave every time I pick him up.
He always has a home. People a pretty welcoming to him, and he’s a pretty chill dog. He gets a little bit whiny if he wants to lie with you. But he’s a pretty chill dog. Oh, and he’s mean around food. That’s the one thing that sucks. He gets angry if somebody comes near his food. He’s totally like me. I do not like when people f*cking touch my food. Not sharing; no thank you. Just an only child thing.
And he was pretty easy to train. When we got him, we were living in a second story apartment, so him understanding going to the front door, then walking down a hallway, then taking the stairs down to get to the bathroom; that’s really hard for a puppy who pees every 1 hour, and has a bladder the size of a pinhole or something. So, that was really hard, and that sucked, and thank god it wasn’t our house, because he peed everywhere. {laughs}
Once we finally were like, “Let’s get a pee pad.” I ordered a pee pad, and put it out on our deck, and he understood potty training like that. It was done. He never peed in the house again. So if you live in an apartment, pee pads are the grossest thing, but they’re f*cking awesome. They train your dog so fast. It was the best thing we could have ever done. I wish we had done it way earlier.
And I’m a little crazy; I don’t like leaving him home alone for more than 5 hours. We’ve gone longer than that. Plenty of dogs do that every single day, because most of their owners work all day every day. So, I don’t like to leave him more than 5 hours, but I’m sure he’s gone 7, maybe a little bit longer than that, and he’s fine. As a puppy, I would never leave him that long, and you kind of just test it out as you go. Some people crate, we crated him for a good amount of time, and then let him go on his own, and he didn’t have any accidents in the house, and that’s that.
One time, he did crawl. We used to have, in our old apartment, we used to have a high bar top table, and he had jumped onto one of the seats, and got up on top of the table, but he couldn’t figure out how to get down. So he just; we got home, and he’s just sitting on the top of this table, like, who knows how long he was up there. This poor guy. But that was the only thing we had, when we left him home alone. That’s the only thing we’ve had an issue with. He never chewed up anything. We did put sour apple spray on some stuff that we didn’t want him chewing on; because they chew as puppies. And yeah, we didn’t have much issue with that, luckily.
So, yeah. I just recommend, I don’t know. You just figure it out. You don’t know what the f*ck you’re doing, and then you figure it out. And dogs are the best. If I could recommend anything, it’d be get a dog. F*cking love my dog so much. It is so crazy. How much you must love your child when you give birth to a child must be crazy, with how much I love Jackson. I just don’t even understand. I love him so much.
17. Favorite Instagram fashion pages [42:29]
Ok. Oh; this question. Maybe that ties along with it. “Favorite Instagram fashion accounts.” No, I think this one is separate. “Favorite fashion Instagram accounts, and favorite swimsuits this year. I read that there isn’t another cookbook in the near future; is there a next big thing?” Ok. So, I have a bunch of different fashion accounts that I follow. @laurabeverlin is really cute. @laurenkaysims is really awesome. @everyonceinastyle. @stylethegirl. @stephanie_danielle. I mean, there are so many. If you just go to my Instagram, and go look at who I follow. I have a ton of people under there. @jordanunderwood. @dressupbuttercup. There are so many; I follow a bunch of cute fashion girls on Instagram. So just go to my profile, and see who I follow, and you can just find them all there. Because they’re pretty new on the list of people I started to follow. I love all of them.
I love @hauteofftherack @carriebradshawlied, @apinchoflovely. All those girls are so adorable. And I’m kind of hoping that they’re at this fashion event that I’m going to, so I just recognize people. Because I don’t know anybody, and I’m going to this thing, and I’m just so nervous because I don’t know anybody. I’m going to be like the girl who eats lunch in the bathroom, because I don’t know anyone. Be my friend! So yeah. That’s who I love.
I always love Maaji swimwear, that’s what I’ve worn. But, I got a bunch of cute swimsuits at Target the other day. And Target for me is hit or miss; but I found awesome ones, and I’ll be posting those pretty quickly, because I’ll be wearing them in Cost Rica. So I’ll have a bunch of swimsuits up there. But Maaji is always my go-to; it always fits like a glove. I have a top coming in the mail today, a lace up one that I’m super pumped about.
And you know, I have a project in the works kind of fitness wise, but so many other things have been coming up, so right now it’s just a lot of travel and adding a lot of travel to my blog so you guys have travel go-to’s when you’re like; “Oh, I’m traveling to San Diego, I remember this PaleOMG chick has a post about that, and you can find things to do and places to eat when you’re traveling. So that’s what I’m doing in Dallas this coming week, is one of those kind of posts, so you have things to do in Dallas, and places to eat. So I’m doing that a lot this next year. But kind of fitness project in the works, but it’s still under development. Yeah, still figuring it out. Figuring the f*cking thing out.
18. Trying CrossFit for the first time [45:51]
Ok. “I’m wondering if you can talk about CrossFit workout versus other workouts, and why you recommend it so much. I’ve been doing regular barre for 2 years, and love how it’s changed my body, but I’m quite honestly afraid and intimidated to give other workouts a chance, especially CrossFit. My husband goes to a great CrossFit gym, and has been trying to recruit me to go with him. I fear that I will bulk up, and lose the shape I have worked hard to get. Do you have any suggestions about how to cross path of intimidation?”
Well, I first think you need to wonder why. I wonder why you’re thinking that you’re going to get bulky. I think so many women think this because when they think of CrossFit, they think of the CrossFit Games. You’re not just thinking about, my friend Clark and his mom doing CrossFit at 60-something years old. You’re not picturing that. And she’s this tiny, tiny little frame, fit little thing. I think you need to rethink that thought. Why are you feeling that way? Are you thinking about the CrossFit Games? Because are you trying to be a CrossFit Games athlete? Because if you are, for sure you’re going to bulk up because you’re gaining an extreme amount of muscle, because you’re lifting an extreme amount of weight. But that is the CrossFit Games, and that is what it has come into.
CrossFit in itself is for the 70-year-old guy at our gym, or the 16-year-old at our gym. It’s for every single person, and you can modify it to what your abilities are. But at the end of the day, you will probably have more muscle than barre specific. And everybody is totally different. But because you’re lifting heavier weights. At barre; what do you have, the heaviest weights are 10-pound weights. At CrossFit, the weight is whatever you can physically do. So I think you need to get the bulkiness out of your mind. If you don’t want to do CrossFit, don’t do CrossFit. And if you love; you’re doing barre and you feel great how you feel, and how your body is looking and feeling, they why do something different? But I think you just need to erase the bulking thing out of your mind because you’re looking at something that’s not CrossFit in general. You’re looking at the CrossFit Games, I’m guessing.
So I hope that answers your question. But at the end of the day, trying something is just all you can do to get past intimidation. You have to go in and try it for the first time; give it a couple of tries. See if you like the gym. See if you like the people. See if you like the workouts. And if you don’t; you have barre. You have something else you love. So that’s easy. You have a whole life ahead of you, it’s easy to change paths and do something different.
19. Planning social posts [48:41]
Ok, next one. “How do you establish what you post on Instagram stories, Instagram, blog; also what equipment do you use for someone just starting their blog for good looking photos?”
I mean, I literally don’t establish any certain things I should put on. I’m like, “Oh, I haven’t posted a food photo in a little bit.” “Oh, I haven’t posted a fashion photo.” “Oh, I have to post this outfit.” Literally, it’s just, I pull out of my ass what I want to talk about. So, that’s that. I don’t plan really what I want to post, but it’s just luck of the draw, whatever I post out there.
And, I think just getting a camera that you love. I think going into a store like Mike’s Camera where you can talk to a person about what kind of camera would be best for the photos that you’re shooting; because I don’t know what you’re shooting. But talk to them, because then you can always buy there, or you can buy on Amazon for a little cheaper deal. But you can get one on one experience with someone who could tell you better camera to get that would work well for the photos you’re taking. So hopefully that helps.
20. Adding muscle [49:58]
Ok. “How do you go about adding muscle? I know you need to eat more, combined with exercise; but do you have any recommendations on how many calories to increase by each day. Are carbs and protein more important for building muscle?”
That’s a really general question. Everybody is completely different, and needs a different amount. Lifting heavier is going to absolutely put on weight, and adding more of everything. You add more carbs, add more protein, and you can add some more fat, even in there. And you’ll definitely add on a little bit more weight. It’s more challenging for some people. But if you’re adding all more food in general, and you’re lifting heavy, you’re going to add some mass; again, any kind of way, really. So more food, more workout. Or heavier workout.
21. Selling clothes [50:46]
“On one podcast, you mentioned that you sell a lot of your clothes. Where? What sites do you sell them?” I don’t sell them on any sites, just because I don’t think; I don’t know if I would be able to have time to get all the photos up, and make sure they were sent out on time, whatever. So I usually just go to Buffalo Exchange, which is near my gym, and then I just get money for clothes there. A lot of clothes I just give to my friends, or my sister-in-law, since I go through them on a regular basis, for my job nowadays.
22. Favorite books [51:21]
“Favorite authors/books that changed the way you think and influenced you?” Really, I haven’t read a ton of books out there with paleo, in general. But one book that completely changed my world I think was Robb Wolf’s first book, The Paleo Solution. It just completely changed how I saw food, and what I had thought my entire life with low-fat, low-calorie foods. It just completely changed my mind, and what we should be eating, and really influenced me a ton. So that was my main book that influenced me, and kind of really got me on track with paleo.
23. First establishing paleo eating [52:08]
“Did you ever fall back into bad eating habits when you were first transitioning into paleo? Was there anything that helped you stick with it?” Yes. When I first started eating paleo, I fell off the wagon every single weekend. So I would eat crazy, crazy strict, and then the weekend would come on. I was dating a guy at the time who was doing the same thing, and he was a huge foodie like me. And we would go get chocolate chip cookies, and chips, and pizza; literally whatever our heart desired, we’d pick it up at the store and go all out. And I would gain probably 10 pounds in a weekend, and then lose back the weight over the week, and then gain it back again.
And it started affecting my workouts. I didn’t feel good in my skin come Monday. I just didn’t want to do it anymore, and I was fed up with feeling like sh*t. I didn’t want to feel like that anymore. So that’s what really got me away from eating those shitting foods. I’m like; “Why am I putting so much work into the gym and into my diet on the weekdays, and then just throwing it all out the window come Friday? This is so pointless. This is not getting me towards my end goal of doing better in CrossFit, in feeling better in my skin, and this is not creating a healthy relationship with food.” So for me, I was like, I’m not doing this anymore. I’m not eating stupid; I f*cking hate, I think gluten is terrible. I’m not eating this anymore, I’m not eating junk food anymore. And if I want a treat, I’m going to make it.
So, now I go to restaurants and have gluten-free food there. But, what made me change it was I didn’t want to feel like sh*t anymore. And junk food and packaged food and gluten-sh*t food. It didn’t make me feel good, so I just stopped eating it. And that was that. It was just one day; I was like I can’t do this anymore. So whenever I’m craving something, I make it. Because then I know exactly what’s going into it, you know? So yeah. That’s what worked for me.
24. Juli’s physique [54:16]
“Do you feel like the physique you currently have can be credited partially to the muscle you had when you competed in CrossFit? Or do you feel as though you could have achieved your current level of muscle and leanness without having to overtax your body?”
I mean, I definitely think that competing in CrossFit, and building so much muscle is why I have some of the muscle I have now. If I would have taken it slow; I mean, I don’t know. I would say yes, because that’s how I’ve developed the muscle and strength I have now, and I think it would have taken me a lot longer if I wouldn’t have worked out multiple times a day and gone as heavy as I did. So I definitely think it helped. Would I do that going back? No, not necessarily because I put myself into adrenal fatigue, and I really fucked up my hormones and my body. But I didn’t know that’s what I was doing. Never once when I was in school for health and exercise science was I told that you could over-do it with exercise. I didn’t know that was a thing.
So yeah, I definitely think some of the muscle I have and strength I have has to do with how much I worked out and competed in the past, for sure.
25. Changing your relationship with food [55:38]
Let’s see; next one. “I know you talked about sugar addiction and your past relationship with food; but how did you get your relationship with food to change. I’m a crossfitter looking to become more competitive. I have a long history of having a poor relationship with food. How were you able to change your relationship with food so that it wasn’t used as much of as emotional vice, and you could enjoy food without being emotionally connected to it?”
So first thing; I don’t think you ever. If you’re a person who is emotionally connected to food, I don’t think that ever completely goes away. Food to me is emotion; that’s how I show my husband that I love him, is making him dinner every single day when I don’t f*cking want to. That’s how I show that I love him, when he doesn’t show me love that same way. So food is emotional to me; it has to do with so many main things in my life.
So I don’t think that ever goes away. But what I had to start to look at, is food is really fuel. It’s definitely emotional, but it is fuel. So if you are not fueling your body correctly, and not eating what it needs, it’s going to push back on you. So I think I had to; I just had to change how I looked at food. Food is still pleasure, and it’s still something I love. But it’s also fuel. So when I’m like; “Maybe I shouldn’t eat these potatoes; maybe I shouldn’t eat this much starch.” I’m fueling my body for another workout, and to be able to go on multiple walks with my dog every day, and get all the work done.
Everybody always asks; “What do you take for energy?” I’m like, I don’t need extra energy. I am fueling my body correctly. If you need energy drinks in the middle of the day, it’s maybe because your body is lacking in something else, so you need to make sure you’re fueling it correctly. So, I think just looking at food as fuel is what really helped me. Especially if you’re going to be a competitive athlete, you need to see it as fuel, because that is what is going to get you to a competitive level, is fueling your body correctly. So I hope that answers that question.
26. Soreness after a workout [57:50]
Ok, next one. Let’s see. Oh, we only have a few left. Kind of. Like 10 {laughs}. Ok. “Curious about how you feel after a workout. Are you sore every day? Only after certain levels of exertion? Should I feel sore for days after every workout? Wondering how a fit person like you feels post workout.”
I mean, every day is completely different. Just the other day; I’ve been doing Orange Theory, and I’ve been talking about Orange Theory a little bit more lately, and I try to go to Orange Theory twice a week. And so with Orange Theory, they hook you up to a heart rate monitor, and they want you to stay in a certain zone, a certain amount of time, and everybody’s always like, “You’re in the orange and red zone too much.”
For me, this past Monday I really tried to cut back and not be in those red and orange zones. And who knows how accurate the heart rate monitor is, anyways. But I always try; I was trying to hold back. But to me, I like feeling in pain. I like feeling very uncomfortable; that’s why I love CrossFit so much. And so, for me, every day I usually feel stressed at some point. Sometimes a workout is less stressful than another, and sometimes I feel sore, sometimes I don’t. I usually am sore at least once a week for sure. I’ll have some sore day, depending on what I did. And it could be all over body soreness after an open workout. Or it can just be specific, like after lunges, I have a really sore butt.
So every day is different. But soreness is something, I think, you should feel on a weekly basis if you’re not overdoing it. Like, soreness is a normal feeling when you’re breaking down muscle tissue and rebuilding it up. And that’s how you build and change your muscles. So I don’t feel sore every single day nowadays. I used to with CrossFit with I was overdoing it, and I felt sore every single day. But you should feel sore every week. Post workout, I never feel; once in a while, say in a summer CrossFit workout that’s a long one, that’s really grueling, like a hero workout, then I’ll feel pretty trashed after it. But say just after my Orange Theory workout, which was a really sweaty, really good workout yesterday, I was off to finish my day, nothing really changed. I feel the same throughout the day, no matter what. So I don’t know if that totally answers your question, but hopefully it does. But yeah, I usually feel sore at some point.
27. Body image [1:00:41]
Body image. “How have the changes in your body made you feel about yourself? Do you still have bad days?” I think everybody has bad days {laughs}. My body changes literally every f*cking day. And I get a comment about my body every f*cking day. And it’s just very strange, because I’ll get a negative one; it’s weird. People are so weird how they talk about other people’s weight. It has nothing to do with them.
So I have bad days like anybody has bad days. I feel insecure just like any other person, and my body changes all the time. I go up and down 5 pounds every single week. I don’t weigh myself on a regular basis, but I’m pretty good at knowing what weight I am depending on how my pants fit. And yeah, my weight changes because my workouts change all the time, and I’ll do, say 4 really hard Orange Theory workouts, and my body is really inflamed, I put 5 pounds on. And then I’ll go; just last week I did mostly CrossFit workouts, and they weren’t as demanding on the body, and I lost 5 pounds.
So, yes. I think we all go through body image issues, no matter what age we are and it’s just something you have to acknowledge, and say, “Ok, I’m not going to feel this way, and I’m not going to talk bad about myself because it’s not going to get me anywhere.” And then you just move forward with it. But f*ck yeah, we all have bad days, right? No matter who you are, you always have a sh*tty feeling day where you just feel crappy.
28. Update on beauty treatments [1:02:19]
Ok, let’s see. Last few questions. “Can you give us an update on your beauty treatments? Any fun new things you’ve tried recently, a fave you keep going back to, or what’s something you’ll never try again?”
So obviously I’m never going to do the lash lifting again, until I really, really know the person maybe. But yeah, they fucked that up; I loved lash lifting the first time I did it; it was f*cking awesome. But the second time; hate it! So I won’t do that again. I haven’t been able to do a lot, just because I’ve been traveling. So you can’t have your face all a mess when you’re out in the airport world with open wounds; no thanks.
So, I’m planning to do a vampire facial; that’s what it’s called. I don’t really know what it is, but my esthetician asked if I wanted to try it, so I’m going to do that soon; try that out. I recently got some new products called; let me pull it up, actually, because I don’t want to f*ck up the name. I just recently got these products, they’re called Revision Skin Care. And it’s a tinted moisturizer, which is literally the best tinted moisturizer ever. It actually has full coverage, and covers up dark spots and pimples, and whatever else. And it’s super breathable, I live it. I’m so obsessed. Revision Skin Care is amazing. And I just recently got the neck cream and the hand cream, because you know; just creeping up on 30 pretty quick, so you’ve got to make sure that skin is staying young.
And, I’ve been getting spray tans recently. If you’re in Denver, there’s this place called Glamour Bar, and they do an amazing spray tan. They spray tan you themselves, and I’ve been going there for spray tan. Because I’m like; “F*ck, I can’t go in a tanning bed anymore. Are you kidding me? I’m too old for this sh*t.” And who has time for that? I don’t have f*cking time for that. And you smell weird. So, yes I’ve been getting spray tans and I have been loving that lately. And I’m going to definitely get one next week before I go to Costa Rica; and then hopefully get a natural bronze. But I just can’t do tanning beds anymore; I’m too old for that sh*t.
29. Differences with Orange Theory [1:04:31]
Ok; this question is kind of related to the previous one. “You have touched base on this a little bit, but what difference are you seeing with adding in Orange Theory classes?” And you know, I’m not seeing a crazy big difference. I see my legs feel a little bit more toned. And then my hip size changes all the time, but I feel like my hips seem a little bit more narrow, because I’m running so much more than I do with CrossFit. That’s kind of the change I’ve seen. But it’s nothing drastic or anything; just things that I’ve noticed.
So yeah. It’s just nice doing a little lighter weights and being able to stay light without a coach kind of breathing down your neck about your weight. Because I always get that with CrossFit. Because CrossFit encourages going heavier, and my coaches know what I’m capable of. So it’s been nice going lighter with weights. And it’s just a little bit less demanding on the body, inflammation wise. So I’ve been liking that.
30. Hungry in the middle of the night [1:05:26]
Ok; “I often find myself waking up hungry in the middle of the night. Does this ever happen to you? If so, how do you prevent that?” So, I used to get this way all the time. I used to be eating at night on a regular basis. It was before I was living with my husband, so that was like 5 years ago, maybe? And I just was not eating enough substantial stuff. That’s when I wasn’t eating the right foods for myself. So I think getting more substantial dinner, and I don’t know what time; for me, I eat dinner around 7, and I go to bed at probably 10, 10:30. So it’s hard to get hungry by then when you’re eating a substantial dinner for me. I’m not finishing by 7:30 or so; so then I don’t really need food before then, and if you’re getting restful sleep, you usually won’t wake up for that.
So eat a more substantial dinner; that’s what I would recommend. I know other people would do something different, but that’s what worked for me, was getting the right nutrients. Making sure I had a little bit more carbohydrate in my own personal diet. That made me feel better. So hopefully that helps. I also think you train your body to think that you need food when you’re sleeping. So the more often you do eat in the middle of the night, the more your body will be like; “Oh, it’s time to get up and feed myself!” So try to get out of that routine and making sure you’re sleeping through the night is important. So yeah, try to up that meal a little bit at dinner.
31. Enough veggies [1:07:00]
“How do you know when you’re getting enough vegetables?” So that’s a hard one. I mean, I think you should be getting vegetables at every single meal you’re eating, and that doesn’t always happen, obviously. But try to get vegetables every single meal. When I; just think about my dinner last night. Whenever I make kale for my husband and I, I make 2 bundles of kale, and we eat that between the two of us. And I usually do equal portions for both of us when it comes to kale; he gets more starchy carbohydrate. So I’m eating a bundle of kale on a regular basis. And then I’m trying to eat other vegetables throughout the day.
So, I think if you’re just making sure you’re getting leafy greens a couple of times a day, and getting other sorts of vegetables kind of mixed in there, then I don’t think it’s something you need to worry about. But know that you can probably always eat more vegetables. If you’re like, “Am I eating enough?” Well, just eat more. Always; there’s always more room for deep greens and vitamin enriched vegetables.
32. Cast iron skillets [1:08:13]
Ok. “You talked about cast iron skillets; what’s your favorite way to effectively clean them without damaging or rusting them?” So what I do after I cook, I just put a little water in it, put it over the stove to boil, and then I’ll use a little scraper to scrape it out, clean it out completely with a brush. So I clean them out, and when they come out, sometimes I’ll need to re-grease it. So I’ll just re-grease it with a little bit of coconut oil or olive oil before I put it away. Sometimes it’s seasoned enough and I don’t have to do that. But, yeah. Just putting in water, and rinsing out right away. You don’t want to keep it sitting in water, because that’s when it will rust. So scrape it, dump it, and then reoil it.
33. Teeth whitener [1:09:02]
“Do you use teeth whitener?” F*ck yeah, I do. Not very often anymore, but if my teeth are ever looking a little bit white, I just use Crest Whitestrips on my teeth, and that usually whitens them up pretty quickly. I’ll use one every couple of months now, and that just kind of cleans them up a little bit.
1.09.26.
Ok. Two more. “Juli; what do you recommend eating before an early morning workout? I go to the gym before work, so I’m out of the house by 5:30, and want to have something in my stomach before Orange Theory, but I find it hard to eat that early, so I’m conflicted. Do you ever workout on an empty stomach?”
It depends how much food I ate the night before. Sometimes, I will do an Orange Theory workout on an empty stomach if I ate a decent amount before, but usually I’ll have something small. Like half a Larabar. Larabars, obviously, are not big, and half just kind of settles my stomach, and I just have a little something in my stomach that I’m not feeling too empty stomach; ravaged, before my workout. So that’s kind of where it works for me, because then I’ll eat a big breakfast after my morning workout. So just try like just a couple bites of a bar. Have something in your stomach before you go. If you feel ok with working out on an empty stomach, do that too. But I think if you can have just a little bit, that helps just settle so you don’t feel super slow or, you know; just feel like crap. You don’t want to feel like crap. So hopefully that helps.
34. Little Debbie’s oatmeal cream pies [1:10:38]
And then this last one. This last one is asked by one of the guys I love out there in the Instagram world, because he has supported my blog for so long, and he came to one of my book tour stops. He’s one of the few straight guys who have come to my events, that weren’t just dragged there by their wife. So. Muchas gracias for this lovely question from him. “When was the last time that you ate a Little Debbie oatmeal cream pie?”
Little Debbie oatmeal cream pies were my f*cking favorite growing up. I could eat a million of those. That’s why I had such a food issue, because my mom let me purchase that sh*t. Mother; you’re out there. Oh man, that sh*t was bad. So it’s probably been since I would say my freshman year of high school. I think that’s it. When was the last time you guys had a Little Debbie oatmeal cream pie? Hopefully not soon. Hopefully you made your own spin on an oatmeal cream pie, so you know where the ingredients came from. Hopefully; fingers crossed. God, those are so f*cking good. I love oatmeal cream pie. I love Little Debbie snake cacks. Snake cacks? F*ck I need to get off this podcast. Snack cakes.
Ok, I gotta get out of here guys. I still have to pack for Dallas. I still need to; I don’t know what else I need to do. I’m going to dinner with my best friend tonight, because I miss her little pretty face. So I’ve got to get out of here. I’ve got to coach at the gym. I’ve got to get my workout on. I hope you guys have a wonderful weekend. Thanks for listening. Remember, if you have any questions, any comments, feel free to come over to www.PaleOMG.com. Leave a comment there, I will definitely get back to you.
And don’t forget to rate, review, and subscribe, because I think that’s important because every other podcaster out there says that. So if you have anything negative to say, take it up with a go f*ck yourself. No, I’m just kidding. No but seriously. Don’t leave a mean comment, that’s rude. I hope you guys have a great day. But, ok. Ok. If you do leave a mean comment, you have to sandwich it. Sandwich it like I did for the eyelash lifting. Sandwich it, baby. Ok. Know what I’m saying?
Ok. I’m out of here. I love you guys so much. You’re the best. Thank you so much for listening. I don’t know why you listen every week, but you’re seriously the best ever. Talk to you soon. Bye-bye!
Go to Savannah! I just went for the first time in March (during the coldest week of the past like decade. *sigh*) It was still beautiful though, and if it’s warm, it will be even better! And it is pronounced like tie-bee. We spent about 15 minutes there on the pier before the wind drove us back to the warmth of the car haha I’d love to see where you eat, because we took advice of non-foodies for restaurants a couple times and were quite disappointed.
Girl, S Town does not get better. Listened to the whole thing, hoping that it would. I felt like I had just binged on Jerry Springer when it was over. No point to it at all. No interesting twist. Basically expoilting a dead, crazy guy ????
seriously!!! i don’t understand why people are so obsessed with it?! it gets worst each episode!
Enjoyed the podcast – thanks. You mentioned a foundation tint you are really liking – I don’t see a link for it, would you mind letting me know the brand again. Yes I am being lazy, I could go back to the podcast and re-listen… appreciate your response!
Savannah is amazing, and you should listen to the podcast Rabbits. https://www.rabbitspodcast.com/about-1/
Hey! Just listened and I am also binge watching The Office! I just saw on Netflix this morning that the British version is on there!
whaaaat?! watching next!
Ok so I had to comment on Shit Town podcast! My husband told me to listen and the first episode I was like WTF. This is dumb. But he really liked it and I could tell wanted me to listen so I kept going. I just finished Episode 3 and am hooked. Keep with it..:)
i’ve listened to all the episodes and i think it just keeps getting worse lol
Hi Juli! First off, I love how transparent you are about your health journey. It was one of the main reasons I decided to go on Accutane, and I am so glad I did – completely cleared my skin which is a Godsend. I have a question about the makeup you use. Ive been using Bare Minerals, but am looking into Jane Iredale since you and Hayley recommend it so much! What is the difference between the loose and pressed powder? Also, beauty counter seems to be taking off..have you used any of their makeup and do you like the Jane Iredale foundation more?? Thanks!!
i like the loose powder for a little better coverage. i use the loose powder for my base and pressed for contouring. i haven’t used the BC makeup, just some of their cleansing products and love those. i just love JI so much so that I don’t want to change or try something different! it’s seriously the best! and i know that many of my friends who are BC reps still just JI!
Hey Juli!
First of all, thank you for being you and being awesome! I love everything you put out there. Also, thanks for being as obsessed with your doggie as me and helping me feel less crazy by talking to her all day haha. I had a couple of random questions and was hoping you could help me out! The first one is, do you have any ideas of how to get more collagen in? I usually add a scoop to my coffee in the morning, but I typically don’t drink anything else besides water during the day… I know you had mentioned awhile ago that you were trying to increase your collagen more, so I was just wondering how you did that. Currently I’m using the Primal Kitchens Collagen Peptides in the blue container. Second, what do you find is the best for sauce thickener? My husband is on board with eating healthy, but also doesn’t like giving up his favorite “not-so-healthy” dishes, so I try to paleo-fy or at least make recipes GF. A lot of sauce recipes start with a roux base, but I’ve read a lot of different ideas for a paleo one, so I was just wondering your thoughts. I’ve found that tapioca starch/flour works ok, but it stays kinda clumpy sometimes.
Thanks for your help!!
Lauren
the only way i usually get more collagen is adding it into a protein shake or i’ll blend some OJ with coconut cream and himalayan sea salt. and i don’t really ever do roux bases, probably just because i didn’t grow up in the south so i never cooked that way or learned to cook that way. but i know other bloggers sometimes use arrowroot! you should check out Down South Paleo (https://www.amazon.com/Down-South-Paleo-Delectable-Gluten-free/dp/1624141323/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1492001318&sr=8-1&keywords=south+paleo) she might have some help recipes and ideas!
I’m seriously addicted to true crime, specifically murder, podcasts because of you. I get so bummed out when I’m completely caught up with a really good one and then there are no new episodes to listen to! I just finished Up and Vanished, not sure if you’ve listened to that one but I really enjoyed it! Thanks keeping it real, love your blog, podcasts, recommendations and humor!
love that podcast!
You mentioned a few times about workouts making your body inflamed? What is this? Ive been doing elliptical over lunch for about 30 mins and then hitting a crossfit class after work, is that too much? I definitely feel like my legs sometimes feel swollen, but i thought that was just soreness.
i can’t say what’s too much for you. i’ve never met you or know your genetics or routine. inflammation is normal and it’s proof that you can changing the body, but too much inflammation caused by excessive workouts and lack of rest can cause an overabundance of inflammation and can mess with the body.
