Juli Bauer: Well hi, guys! Welcome back to paleo… God, I fucked that up. We’re going to leave it in. welcome back to PaleOMG Uncensored. My name is Juli Bauer Roth, as of just last week, and I am the writer and creator of www.PaleOMG.com. Hopefully you’ve got that by whatever episode, the 24th episode this is, I believe. Hopefully you listen to all the podcasts from the beginning, because I feel like you have to get to know me, and I don’t know; I don’t know. I just feel like you have to. It’s like going into a podcast mid-season, you don’t really know the person. And this friendship is purely online, so we really got to get to know each other. Kind of like a Match.com date. This is pointless. Let’s just get into things, guys.

So, right now, just so you know, so you can really visualize what’s going on here; I have a dog sitting on my lap. My dog, Jackson, is 40 pounds; about 40 pounds. And he does not fit well in my lap; Jackson, do you? But he is a person who likes to cuddle. He likes to be around his mother, and when I’m sitting at my desk, it’s just a little bit more challenging, so we’ll see how long he lasts in my lap, since he can’t lie down or sleep sitting up. But he’s f*cking cute; I want him on my lap all the time. I love this dog so damn much!

1. Weekly recap: CrossFit Open [5:38]

So anyways; let’s talk about what happened last week. Because my last podcast, I was talking about how the Open was starting; the CrossFit Open. And if you don’t do CrossFit, good on ya, because the CrossFit Open is really f*cking annoying. So the CrossFit Open is the first competition into like; imagine the CrossFit Olympics, which is the CrossFit Games. So you have to go through the Open; and if you finish in the Open high ranking, you go to Regionals. Regionals go to CrossFit Games. It’s like; I don’t know, any sport where you have all those competitions leading up.

So the CrossFit Open, anybody can do. And all these people sign up. They pay the $20 to sign up, and CrossFit just swims in their money banks. I can’t imagine how much money CrossFit HQ makes; because they host, I don’t know, I’m guessing 20, what’s it called; 20 certifications, like classes every weekend, and each one of those certifications usually costs like $500 to $1000, and each thing probably has 30 people in it. Just do the math; they make a lot of f*cking money. And so then you have the CrossFit Open; how many thousands of thousands of people sign up for it; $20 a pop. I just, I want to know the background. I want to see them swimming in their dollar bill swimming pools, you know. Am I being judge-y? I sound really judge-y.

I had a guy last week, when I said I was going to talk about; I posted this thing on Instagram, I was like, “Hey my podcast is up; all my favorite things.” And he was like, “Is your favorite thing complaining?” {laughs} Yes. Random guy of the internet; yes it is. One of my favorite things is complaining. And when you have your own podcast, where you talk about yourself, you can complain all you want. It’s pretty f*cking rad.

Ok, so anyway, let’s go back to the beginning. The CrossFit Open started; I think it’s 5 workouts, so it’s 5 weeks. And the CrossFit Open, the first workout was announced last week. Everybody had to turn their scores in. this workout; I don’t even remember what it was. But it had dumbbell snatches, and burpee box overs. So you had to do dumbbell snatches, and then you had to do a burpee, and do a box jump over to the other side. Whatever. The workout destroyed me. Destroyed me. I felt awful afterwards. I was getting over a head cold, so maybe I’m just making excuses, but I felt like tits. Like saggy tits afterwards. I felt terrible.

So I am a person; I’ve never hurt my back in CrossFit; I feel like that’s pretty common, and I never even feel my back in workouts. I think at this stage of being in CrossFit for 6-plus years, I’m really good at activating my hamstrings. I know how to do that. And my back was just blown up from that workout; it was so fatigued, and I did, in a workout I did yesterday, we had 100 deadlifts at a lighter weight, and I could even feel it in my back. And I’m not sore, like I wasn’t sore in my back, but my back was very tight. And I don’t let myself get to that point in a workout that I let my back tighten up; that shows me that I’m doing the workout wrong. We don’t ever do dumbbell snatches. When I was in Regionals years ago, we had dumbbell snatches in a workout, and I think it was like 65 or 70-pound dumbbell snatches. And this year in the open, it was a 35-pound dumbbell. So it was like half the weight this year; so I’m snatching that weight at Regionals, and I had to do a split snatch.

If you’re like; Juli, shut the f*ck up, I don’t care about this. I apologize. I know CrossFit is not for everyone. So I’ll get through this pretty quickly. So whatever; I was super pissed I didn’t do very well compared to all the other coaches at our gym, so I sucked. I finished the workout, but sucked compared to other coaches at the gym. But; I’ve also been doing CrossFit one to two times a week since I started adding in Orange Theory. So, you know; you don’t do CrossFit then you’re not as good at it. What a surprise!

So I was beating myself up about it all last weekend, wishing I was better; but at the same time I don’t want to do CrossFit more. I like doing what I’m doing now, and so why would I give a f*ck? I just hate; a bunch of people at our gym were talking about how their back was blown up. One guy was like, “I literally couldn’t even get off the couch on Saturday.” And if the Open wasn’t even going on, he would never even be in that position, because he wouldn’t have pushed himself to that max. I’m just so annoyed with the CrossFit Open. But people love that sh*t; so go them. Hopefully I have a better attitude about it soon.

2. Weekend festivities [10:51]

But anyways; ok. So that’s what happening in the beginning of the weekend, because we do that on Friday nights and then we all party at the gym afterwards. So I hung out there. The next day; one of my friends decided to go to DJ school; like, EDM, house music type thing, and learn how to mix music and all that cool sh*t. so he went to DJ school for the past month or so, and he got a gig at this thing called Westword Artopia; and it was in this warehouse near my gym; like a 3 or 4-story warehouse or something. There was a bunch of art stuff going on, and my friend played the silent disco. So we had headphones on. My husband came; who he never comes to these EDM shows, that music is not his thing. But he came, and watched my friend play. And it was like 30 of our closest friends all dancing with headphones on. If you take your headphones off, it’s like silence in the room. Its’ really funny if you’re not involved. But he was so f*cking awesome. I could not stop smiling; my face hurt afterwards.

And then I wasn’t drinking that night, because I was driving, and I hate being hungover on Sundays. So I wasn’t drinking; and then one of my friends was a wasty face, and we ended up having to drive him home. And the next morning he was like, “How did I get home?” {laughs} and we just told him he went home with a girl. Which was hilarious, because he believed us for a while. We finally let him know. But that was f*cking funny for a little bit.

So anyways, I stay sober so I can be productive on Sunday; and then our neighbors from down the street, they’re around the same age. They have one dog, they don’t have kids; they’re just f*cking awesome. I just hope they don’t have kinds for a while. Just stay with us; guys, stay with us. So they asked us out to brunch; and we go to brunch near our house. I get one mimosa, and we’re still hanging out, so I’m like, ok I’ll get one more. I get one more mimosa; champagne is the only alcohol that I actually enjoy, and I have a really good time with, because it makes you all bubbly and fun.

So I’m having two mimosas; and then our server just takes it upon herself to turn my two mimosa into a bottomless mimosa. She keeps filling up my drink, and I’m having a good time at this point; I’m two mimosas deep. I’m not going to say no. So she’s filling up my champagne glass all the way up to the top with champagne, no room for orange juice. So I’m just drinking straight up champagne, like a f*cking night at a wedding. Just straight up champagne, and then our brunch turns into a 4-hour brunch, and I’m supposed to go get outfit photos done, and have all my outfits ready to go; packed, ready to go. And then that brunch turns into cocktails at our house, which turns into our dogs playing, which turns into going to our favorite hole in the wall Mexican joint near our house. And yeah, me being a drunken mess. There were missing pieces of the day.

So whatever. We go to bed by 8. I am up by 1 in the morning; wide awake, can’t go back to sleep, because of this damn hangover I’ve got going on. I’m parched, I’m dehydrated; I hate myself for getting drunk, for missing pieces of the day. The next day, on Monday, I was so depressed all day long. How do people drink alcohol on a regular basis; like, every single weekend? I was so depressed, so unproductive. I had to go ask my sister-in-law to take photos for me in the middle of the day on her lunch break; screwed everybody else’s day up. Screwed my own life up. I’m back up, thankfully, by Thursday. I’m recording this on Thursday; so I’m back up again. But Jesus. Damn alcohol. But I really like those neighbors; and they’re just so much fun. And I think they felt the same as we did, which makes me feel a little bit better, because I think they’re on the same page as alcohol. We’re nearing our 30s here, and my husband is already in his 30s, and those hangovers are no f*cking joke.

So that’s how our weekend panned out. which actually; I was like, hey I’m doing stuff! I’m cool! I’m a cool girl. I’m a cool mom. Crushed the weekend. Just didn’t crush life. So yeah, that’s what happened in the day of my life.

3. Bachelor recap [15:24]

And this week, when I was going to record the podcast, I haven’t done a listener’s questions in a while, and so I asked you guys on the blog and then I asked you on my Instagram so I had a bunch of different random questions. So we’re going to get about that today; but before we get started, you know what we have to do. You know what we have to do? We have to talk about the Bachelor this week. Because it’s almost over. {laughs} So, you guys. They only had a one-hour episode. Why don’t they do that all the time? Why don’t they always do one-hours? Two hours, they have people just; “Um, well,” for 10 minutes straight. Just mark it down to one hour and get to the point, you assholes. Next week is 3 hours; how the f*ck are we supposed to get through that, huh? How are we going to do it? But it’s the finale. I think? Is it the finale? I don’t know.

Ok. So let’s talk about the Bachelor this week, because one hour was perfect. It was straight to the f*cking point. Andi shows up to talk to Nick, and if you don’t know about the Bachelor, Nick was on Andi’s season and she dumped him and he went on after the rose, and was like, why did you bone me if you didn’t love me? Just pretty much shaming her for having sex. Whatever; who talks about sex on live TV? Oh, Raven does, but we’ll get to that.

So Andi comes on, and it’s super weird, and they’re drinking whiskey. Who drinks whiskey? It’s f*cking gross. My husband does, and he mashes jalapeños into it, and it’s so gross. Who drinks whiskey? Get over it, it’s gross. Drink champagne. So, they hash out their boring stuff, and Andi’s pretty much like, “Oh, go whore it up! Ha-ha-ha-ha!” It’s weird.

So the producers make it look like while he’s talking to Andi, all the women are waiting downstairs; like, making these women wait in the freezing ass cold. It’s New York; they’re in f*cking New York. Take your rose ceremony inside. These women bought the beautiful, I’m sure expensive gowns, and you’re making them put on fur coats and shiver in the cold. Ugh, I hate it.

So Corrine goes home; finally gets the boot. It’s crazy she made it that far. She cries. Sadly, my sound went out on my recording, so I didn’t even really get to hear what she said, but I read it. But I totally felt like she was laughing as she was trying to cry. She was kind of covering her face because she was laughing. Because she was like, “I am putting on such a good show; I am going to get so many f*cking gigs off of this. Instagram is about to blow up.” I don’t know, I think it’s hilarious. I think she was awesome. People hate her; I don’t know why. She seems like a gem. She seems funny and doesn’t give a f*ck what people think. Go you!

Ok. So after Corrine gets the boot and cries, and gets probably every late show on television and Ellen and everything else, all the other people; Raven, and whoever else is still on the show, go to Finland. Looks miserable; stop going to cold places. Nobody is like; “Oh, I can’t wait.” No. I don’t want to cuddle up in the cold; I want to be warm. But whatever.

So they go to Finland, and it’s just Raven; it’s nice and short. They go to some pub and play darts; because that’s what I want to do on my romantic, expensive ass date that ABC has put on. I want to play darts in f*cking Finland in a dirty ass bar. No thank you. So Raven decides that it’s a good idea to let the public know; let everyone, all the millions of viewers watching, that she has only slept with one person and she’s never had an orgasm. She must have felt like she was best friends with the producers at that point to just let that information go. And I’m sure she regrets that. There are many women out there; maybe yourself, listening right now, who has a problem orgasming; but that’s something you talk about with your girlfriends over 10 bottles of champagne. And then you go buy weird sex toys together. This is not; did that make you feel weird? {laughs} This is not what you talk about on national television.

And then she goes to tell Nick that she’s never had an orgasms. Pretty much she’s like, “Hey, here’s the date card to spend the night. I’ve never had an orgasms, you better f*cking please me.” Wasn’t that weird? Oh, package just came to my door. {doorbell} {barking} Jackson, no! {laughing} Sorry guys. What a naughty little doggy. But I should really go pick up that package.

So, anyways. Raven, they spend the night together; she wakes up looking refreshed. {laughs} We can all put the pieces together. And that was about it. So, cool. Yeah. Thanks for outing your boyfriend on national television that he never gave you an orgasm, Raven. You are just winning over the hearts of people everywhere. Especially Nick’s family. Ok, so that’s all we got. I’m sure I’ll have a lot to talk about. It’s been 20 minutes, and I haven’t even gotten to questions. Let’s get some questions going, guys. Hold on; I’ve got to get this package at the front door. Hold on guys!

4. Fast and easy dinners for late nights [21:03]

Ok, yay. I got my Nordstrom package, and I’m so excited about these new shoes that I got, because I’m going to share them on the blog next week. But let’s get to questions. Oh my gosh, and I got business cards, so I act like I’m a professional! {laughs} Oh, the jokes.

Ok, so I have all kinds of random questions, and if I don’t answer your question feel free to come to the blog and ask a question there. I respond to comments really quickly; just leave a question there. If you have any questions about starting a blog; I had lots of questions about how I come up with content, how I started making recipes, advice for a new blogger, that kind of stuff. I have two episodes; episodes 7 and 12 that are about blogging and how I come up with content and how I got started; the whole jazz. How I get paid, different companies I work with; all that jazz. So if you have any questions, go back to those podcast episodes and hopefully those answer your questions!

Ok let’s get into questions because these are so fun. This question I wrote down a long time ago, and I never wrote down the name of the person, because I totally spaced it. And I had this written down quite a while ago, but she asks, “Do you have any suggestions for either snacks or a dinner-like meal I could eat while coaching so I can go to bed.” Because she said she coached until like 8 p.m., “So I can go to bed right after.”

So whenever I’m coaching, I always have a Larabar or an RX bar on hand, because I’ll eat that in between. Say I workout, I’ll eat that while I’m coaching. So if you can have a bar with you, that makes life easier. And you can do it in between; be like, ok people split off, grab your weights, you can shove something in your face kind of quick. I did almond butter packets; like hazelnut chocolate butter packets, that’s what I always do. So I’ll always have that. And then if you can just have your dinner ready; because I know you need to get to bed right away, but if you have dinner ready to go whether it’s in a crockpot, or you just have food in the fridge ready to heat up right away. Last night I didn’t get home until like 8:15, and I just reheated up chicken, and I had some cassava tortilla chips that I had. That was my carb; I didn’t feel like making vegetables.

So make your life easier; plan ahead, and then just have those snacks that can kind of tide you over so you can have a bigger meal when you get home, but it’s already ready to go, just heat up real quick so you can hop in bed pretty much right away. So that’s what I recommend. {clink} Oh sh*t! That was my ring.

5. Retraining your thoughts [23:48]

Ok, Katie. “After listening to your podcast last week, as well as reading your blog, you have freed yourself from counting and measuring guilt, and that is also something I’m personally working on now. You mentioned at one point that you said, ‘F*ck it’ and went on with your life. I would love to know if you had to kind of retrain yourself to make you move away from those thoughts, and maybe what specifically worked for you?”

So I wish I had the exact things I did, but I did have that f*ck it moment. So forever I was incredibly strict with my diet, which led to more binging behaviors later on, so I’d be super, super strict, and once I would have something I would over-do it completely. And I was like; ok, I keep gaining weight. And this was when I was competing in CrossFit. I keep gaining weight, I don’t recognize myself in the mirror, I’m unhappy, I’m not f*cking doing this anymore. I’m going to eat what I want, listen to my body; so I just said f*ck it, and went and had some French fries and moved on with my day. And as soon as I said that, something just clicked. I’ll still go kind of back sometimes ,where I’m like, “Ok maybe I shouldn’t be doing that. Maybe I shouldn’t have that,” Where I kind of get a little bit crazy. But I just had to let myself know that carbs were my friend. I was so scared of them, and I was eating the carbs that weren’t working for me, as well. I was like, “ok paleo says you can have sweet potato, so I’m only having sweet potato. I’m never having white rice, I’m never have regular potatoes.” And I was like; “ok I’m going to be more free with my carbohydrates.” And so I would have regular potatoes, I made regular potatoes; then I started adding more rice, like to a bowl at Chipotle, or getting some and just adding it into my meal. And I felt so much better, and since I wasn’t stressing I started kind of losing weight.

There’s nothing I totally did to retrain myself; it was just reminding myself that what I was doing was not working, so I would try something else and kind of go from there. I think one of the biggest things that was happening was I was stressing out so much about food that I was messing with my cortisol levels because of the stress, which led to weight gain, as well. So saying f*ck it and just moving on with my day, and spending more time thinking about positive things instead of negative things is what kind of really helps me.

So I don’t know if that answers your question, but it definitely took a little bit, and just not worrying about things. We worry so much about all the little details in our lives, and in our diet, it just fucks with us. But hopefully that helps.

6. Dealing with PMS [26:46]

Misty; “How do you deal with PMS?” I had a couple of questions about this. “The day before, I always let my cravings get the best of me in a very non-responsible way. Do you just let yourself indulge and get back on track the next day?”

And I definitely; I feel when I’m PMSing, I definitely feel like I want more food, and want more sweets. And I personally give into that. I’m not a person who is going to eat sh*tty food; if I want a dessert I’m going to make that dessert, and I’m going to have the chocolate I talked about in the beginning of this podcast. So I think I indulge in more responsible ways than are out there than I’ve played with in the past. So if I want more food, and my body is craving more food; I eat more food. It’s just, that’s that. But I stay with my workout schedule; I don’t hardly ever take pain medication, because working out really helps with any cramps that I have.

But you know, your body is craving something for a reason if your diet is pretty clean, so I kind of give into it, and I usually have more carbohydrates around my period. I don’t know if that’s needed, but yeah. I just stay on track by working out and eating in a responsible way, but still giving into those cravings and letting your body feed how it needs to feed. That sounds weird, related to your period. But that’s what I do.

7. Jackson toys and treats [28:13]

Katie and Bliss, they both had some questions about Jackson. This cute little dog by my feet, now. “What are your favorites for Jackson?” and “When you play with Jackson does he have any toys? My dog Charlie loves toys, but I’m running out of ideas what to get her.”

So Jackson, and I’ve had this question before with food. Jackson eats Pure Vita food, and he eats the salmon version of that brand, and he’s been great on it ever since we started feeding it to him as a puppy, once he had a bunch of stomach issues and he started eating that, and he has been awesome ever since so he doesn’t have any issues with that.

And the only toys that Jackson actually is interested in is Himalayan Salt Chews. I think they were on Shark Tank, honestly. But I buy them at the dog store that I go to. It’s like this big ol Himalayan Chew, and he just eats that up and loves it. He just ate one, actually. They’re supposed to last forever, and they don’t last very long with him. But those are awesome, and they’re all natural and don’t have weird sh*t in them. So I give him those; those are his main thing.

And then, I really wish I knew the brand, but you can always ask your dog store about it. There’s this chew toy, like plush toy, that’s threaded from the inside, and it has this crazy threading in the inside so it doesn’t tear apart. From what I heard, French Bulldogs were bred to fight bulls, so that’s why they have a short nose because they would latch onto the bull. I don’t know if any of this is true, and I don’t care to f*cking Google it. So anyways; Jackson has an extremely strong jaw, and very obsessive, so he just chews at something until he tears it apart and tries to eat the fluff. So I found these toys that are threaded from the inside, and they have all these crazy threading on the inside. and they last way longer. They don’t last forever, but they last way, way longer than normal plush toys. So I tend to buy him those. But those are honestly the only things I get him.

The only treats that I buy him are freeze dried liver. There is a bunch of different brands out there; again, I buy him whatever I see. But freeze dried liver; I’ll get him duck liver, chicken liver maybe; I just get him these freeze dried liver treats, because they’re kind of small and he gets chubby easily. So I get him those and he loves those, and then there’s sweet potato sticks that are literally like crinkle cut sweet potato fries that are dried, and I give him those and those are kind of fun for him to chew on. But that’s about it. We just play because we’re just best friends. And I just chase him, and he chases me. And then he gets sticks while he walks, so he just chews on sticks in the backyard. He’s the best. I love him so much.

8. Eating in social situations [31:20]

Ok, Jess. “Can you talk a little bit about managing your food and drink in social situations? I feel like I’m always in complete control at all times except for when I’m obviously not controlling the food that’s being served. I always bring a healthy option, but sometimes that’s the only option; what do you do to stick to your healthy guns when no one around you is doing the same?”

So if you know that you’re going to a party or an even that is not going to have the best food options, eat before. Make sure you eat and you get a full meal in, so you’re going to be less interested in the food around there, so you know what you’re eating. I always try to eat something before I go; I’m just thinking about the Super Bowl party recently. I ate food before I left; I knew there would be a bunch of sh*tty food there, so I just tried to stick with the chips that I knew were safe. I didn’t bring my own option.

But at the end of the day, drink a lot of water, and you just have to have your own self-control. That’s it at the end of the day; self-control is a really f*cking hard thing. But you can do it. So eating beforehand, drinking a sh*t ton of water, because then you’re less hungry and less interested in snacking, and I bring my own drinks. So if it’s a party I don’t want to drink at, I bring my own soda water, and then I put that in a glass, so it feels like I’m drinking with everybody. But it’s just f*cking sticking to your guns. If you chose to eat a certain way; eat that way.

9. Too lean on paleo and lifting [32:54]

Megan; “I’ve been eating paleo for about 4 months, and sticking to a weight lifting routine. My body has responded accordingly, and I’m the leanest I’ve ever been. While this is the aesthetic I’ve always wanted to achieve, I’m finding myself having a hard time adjusting to it. I don’t recognize my body and keep wondering if I’m getting too lean. You’ve talked openly about changes in your body you’ve gone through during your fitness journey, so I’m wondering if you have ever experienced this?”

I don’t personally feel like I’ve ever been too thin. I’ve had people make comments about my weight, as it’s gone up and done; whether I’m heavy or smaller, I always have a certain someone that I will not name, don’t worry it’s not my husband; but they always talk about my weight. And I’ve never felt too thin; I haven’t personally gone through that.

But I know; I was actually listening to my friend’s podcast, Joy from Girls Gone WOD; she was talking about doing macros, and she actually lost too much weight. I think she might have lost her period, and her libido was super low. And she just wasn’t comfortable, but people kept telling her that she looked so good, so she felt like she should be comfortable. It’s really interesting; it’s a pretty recent podcast. So if you want to know more about that and her story, you should listen to that.

But you know, I think our bodies kind of go up and down with weight all the time. And that’s kind of part of our journey, and your weight may change. But I haven’t personally experienced that myself, and that’s kind of the question here. But if you’re not comfortable with that, it might be worth looking at, just maybe changing more of your eating routine and what you’re eating so you’re not getting as lean, since I’m sure you want to continue with your weight lifting routine. So I would kind of look at your diet. But I can’t speak on that, myself.

10. Staying motivated, recovering from a hard workout [34:57]

Lindsey, “I know it takes a while to see changes in your body after you start cleaning eating and workouts. How you do stay motivated while working on changing your body after you stopped competitive CrossFit? What’s the best way you recover after a hard workout like that. Do you have any clothing lines you have for a must to…” What? That’s a hard question to answer. I think she’s asking about swim wear.

But, she’s asking, “How did you stay motivated while working on changing your body after you stopped competitive CrossFit.” I stopped worrying about it. I stopped f*cking caring, because bodies do what they want to do when they want to do it, and I was eating what my body needed, and I was working out hard, and so I just stopped worrying about it. There are so many other f*cking things to worry about, and from what I’ve found over the years is that my body is going to do what it wants to do whether I feel like I’m controlling it or not. So I just stopped worrying about it, and my body changed. And it still changes, and I just stick with working out regularly and eating healthy on a regular basis, because those are the two things that I know are best for my body. But I just stopped worrying about it. It wasn’t worth thinking about; there are too many other things in life that are worth thinking about.

“What’s the best way to recover after a hard workout?” You know, I don’t really do anything. I wish I did more; stretch, roll out. I recently talked about the fascia blaster, and I’ve been using that on my legs, and I literally have hardly been sore in my legs at all. So you can drink recovery shakes; you can take, like do an ice bath, you can do; what’s that, Epsom salt bath or something like that. But at the end of the day, I just let my body recover; roll out; do a workout to work out some of the lactic acid if it’s not my rest day. That’s kind of what I do.

And I think you asked about swimwear, and I think my favorite swimwear right now is Maaji or L*Space. So if that was what your question was. But Maaji and L*Space are my favorite swimsuit lines.

11. Fitness podcasts [37:14]

Katie; “What are some of your other fitness related podcasts that really motivate you and inspire you?” Honestly; girlfriend, I listen to murder podcasts or Bachelor spoiler podcasts, so I’m not the best person to answer that. But I do love; I just mentioned them; Girls Gone WOD podcast, Claire and Joy. They’re two of my friends here in Denver, and they have a podcast, and they talk about CrossFit and things they’ve gone through fitness related, so they’re awesome. So I definitely recommend them.

12. Favorite dry shampoo [37:53]

Sarah, “What is your favorite dry shampoo?” Crap. Now I’m forgetting what it is; I’m so sorry! But I talked about it in one of My Favorite Things podcast; I think my first Favorite Things podcast I talk about that dry shampoo. So back on that episode. I don’t even know why I read that question if I don’t know the answer to it. What a bitch I am; sorry Sarah.

13. Staying lean and toned [38:19]

Ok, here’s another Sarah. God, I feel like such a bitch. “My question for you is what type of workouts do you recommend for getting lean and staying toned. I do Orange Theory, Cycle Bar, and Yoga. I also lift, but I need consistent help with my form due to previous injuries so I lift less than I probably should. Any suggestions how to lift more and lift well with good form.”

So, to stay lean and staying toned is going to have to do a lot with your diet. Staying lean has to do with your diet for sure; but lifting weights is incredibly important and I think it’s important to lift heavier on some days and lighter on others. And the way to get better with your form is start off light, and work your way. Doing a strength series workout is really helpful; because you start at this light weight, get your couple of deadlifts in, go a little bit heavier, try to feel the same movement the entire time. But if you stay a little bit lighter, dial in that form, push it a little bit harder the next week; dial in that form there. you’ll continue to get better with your form.

But just remember that you have to start somewhere and you have to start at light lighter weight and work your way up. But staying lean and toned has to do with all kinds of different movements; but going heavier in your weights sometimes, I personally thing is really important, especially for women and their bones and osteoporosis, etc. Lift weights, women.

Her other question is, “how do you balance working all the time, running your own business, spending time with the people you live, getting in workouts, taking self-care”; oh my gosh you have so many, “and staying still caught up with work. I plan out my days pretty well, similar to what you have mentioned in your podcast, but I always feel like areas are lacking because I don’t have enough time.”

I don’t know, girlfriend. I personally; I think some of my social life definitely lacks. A little bit less as I get older, because people my age aren’t drinking quite as much as they used to, but I just don’t have as big of a social life because I want to get work done and I didn’t want to drink alcohol. {laughs} This is coming after I got drunk on Sunday. But I think a lot of my social life has lacked because I don’t like going into those situations where I feel like I have to drink to fit in. so I think a lot of that has lacked for sure in my life. But I’m fine with that.

So I think you just kind of have to budget with what is most important in your life, and some things will fall short, but then you can make up for them at other times. I don’t see my friends as much as I want to; one week I do, the next week I don’t. but I still try to just plan those times. One of my best friends; we try to meet every Thursday for coffee in the morning before she goes to work, and multiple Fridays I meet up with one of my friends for lunch because he can do Friday lunches. So I think you just start trying to figure out when you can fit in time, and if you can’t contacting those people and just letting them know that you care about them, but I think you have to do what’s most important to you and then figure out the times when you can fit in those other things. I don’t know; I hope that helps. I hope that answers your question.

14. Self-tanner [41:49]

Amy. “Have you ever used a self-tanner?” Yeah, I’ve used many. I hate them all. It turns your hands orange. One of my friends has a spray tan at her house, and so she’ll spray tan my naked body in her basement, sometimes but I just don’t really use them because I just don’t care enough to. I’m just too lazy, and you smell bad, and it gets all over my clothes, and my bed, so I hate it. So yeah, I don’t use self tanner, personally, on a regular basis.

15. CrossFit at home [42:21]

Lori; “Is there a way to do CrossFit workouts at home? I have a garage den, and since I have 3 little ones, I work out at home and really like to look your short intense workouts; plus CrossFit is crazy expensive. Can I just jump in and follow yours, or do I need some sort of CrossFit training?”

I think that just depends on what you’re doing. And you know, CrossFit can be all kinds of different things. I started CrossFit in just a regular gym, and it was when I wanted to do snatches, and clean and jerks, that I really needed some help and some guidance outside of just the videos I watched online. So I think you can do stuff, you just have to be smart about it. And if you’re ok with programming your own type of stuff, or looking up programs, then you can totally do it. You just have to; I think you have to be safe, especially with those Olympic lifts, and not be a f*cking dumbass. Because if you want to hurt yourself, and you have 3 little ones at home, that’s going to suck, you know?

She also said, “Do you train certain body parts on certain days, or you just do whole body?” And I never train a certain body part; I never think about training a certain body part. Say I’m doing biceps curls; I might be doing squats a second later. So I’m always thinking whole body, because you get your most bang for your buck when you’re doing whole body. F*cking doing it all.

16. Non-blog worthy foods [43:43]

Jada; “What do you do with the food that you make that isn’t blog worthy; as far as texture or appearance goes, but it still tastes good anyway?” So if a food doesn’t look right, I still eat it. If it’s worth eating, then we still eat it, it just doesn’t get photographed, and I figure out what needs to be done so it can look better and more appealing and then I just remake it. But if it tastes good, we still eat it. If it doesn’t taste good, I throw it out, and that sucks but that’s how it goes. And just so you know, right now, I’m in my office, which is also where I photograph food photos, and there’s a dozen cookies sitting here, just staring at me. Strawberry chocolate chip cookies; and they’re so pretty, you guys. totes pretty.

17. About Orange Theory [44:35]

Amanda, “Can you talk a little bit about Orange Theory; what exactly it is and I’d love to hear about it.” I talked about this in my last podcast; Amanda. Why don’t you listen to all of my f*cking podcasts? Just kidding, because you have a life, whatever. So, Orange Theory is this workout where I think it’s like, 24 people, and it has running, rowing, and lifting. So you’re either on the treadmill or you’re on the lifting floor. And your trainer is running you through stuff. You’re hooked up to a heart rate monitor; so on the screen it shows your heart rate, and how many calories you’ve burned. Yeah, that kind of information.

So, your trainer will tell you if you’re on the treadmill what you’re doing. So say; hey, we’re going to be at a push pace for 2 minutes where you’re going a little bit faster; hey we’re going to sprint for 30 seconds straight, and then while you’re doing the stuff on the treadmill, a person is on the floor and they’re doing lifts. It will be all kinds of different stuff, from biceps curls to burpees to TRX, and then you’ll do half the time in the weight room, half the time on either the rowers or the treadmills. I love it; I think it’s awesome.

And they send you a review of what your workout looked like; how many calories you burned, what zones you were in in your heart rate; that kind of stuff. I think it’s awesome; I’ve really liked it lately, and it’s just been nice to just go to a different gym and get a different feeling and a really different kind of workout. Because CrossFit, at our gym; say we’re do a strength for 20 minutes, and then we’ll do like an 8-minute workout. So say I’m working out less than 28 minutes of the day, Orange Theory is 55 minutes every single time. So you’re moving the entire 55 minutes.

So yeah; I’ve been loving it. Abby, I wrote this question right under it, because Abby asks, “I’m curious what your base pace, push pace, and all out speeds on the treadmill are?” So you’ll kind of get the gauge of that if you’re doing those lifts, or those treadmill workouts more, if you’ve never done that. So the base pace is; or my base pace is 6.0 to 6.5; that’s usually my base pace. Push pace is 7.0 to 7.5; and then my all out is 10. So I put it 10 when I’m doing all out sprint. So those are my; yeah, just my base, push, and sprint. And I kind of mess around with it, the more comfortable I get on the treadmill. I don’t work out on a treadmill very often, so I feel like I definitely had to get comfortable with pushing it on pace and knowing what that pace should feel like. But yeah, I’ve loved it. It’s been really awesome. I highly recommend it to people.

The only thing that I’ve complained about with Orange Theory; I talked about this on my last podcast, is I feel like sometimes trainers, because they have so much going on, they have to keep people paced on the treadmills while they’re watching people on the floor, and I feel like sometimes they let people get away with movements that shouldn’t, and if you can’t do pushups on your toes, go down to your knees. If you can’t do pushups on your knees, let’s go to a wall. Like, give people different options, and with the trainers I’ve seen so far, I haven’t always seen the trainers keep up with that. It is a lot to keep up with as a trainer, when they’re talking to so many different people, and keeping an eye on so many people. But I don’t think people should get away with bad for, and I see that happen in a lot of CrossFit gyms, and we just don’t put up with that at our CrossFit gym, so that’s why I wish they would just do that a little bit better at Orange Theory; or give them different options. Ok, you can’t physically do this, let’s do this. So that’s the only complaint I’ve had about it.

18. Change to Orange Theory [48:40]

Ok; these are some Instagram ones, so I’m not going to say the Instagram name, just because they’re like, kind of different names. But anyways. So this one says, “you seem to be focusing more on Orange Theory. What prompted that change?” The change for me was I getting a little bit bored at my gym, and we were in a strength cycle, and at this point in my life, I’ve been the strongest I’ve ever physically was, and I don’t want to be that strong anymore. I was 30 pounds heavier, and I was not comfortable in my skin, so I’m not looking to go through a strength cycle and do one-rep maxes because they don’t interest me. I don’t give a sh*t.

So, what prompted that change was I was just feeling a little bit bored and not inspired at the gym, at my CrossFit gym. So I just decided to mix it up with Orange Theory. And I kind of like using my body as a science experiment, so I’m like, “what body changes will I see from doing Orange Theory a little bit more, CrossFit a little bit less?” So, my body has definitely changed a little bit in the less than a month; I feel like my hips look a little bit smaller, and I feel like I look a little bit leaner. Because when I’m lifting heavy on a regular basis, my body doesn’t lean out like some of the beautiful CrossFitters out there, like Brooke Ence, or Miranda Oldroyd, where they have these super lean, shapely legs. When I lift heavier, mine kind of puff up in a way, and I’m not saying, “Ugh, lifting makes you fluffy.” I’m not saying that. That’s just, my legs just get a little bit bigger and less shapely. And now that I’m doing CrossFit and Orange Theory, where I’m working out a little bit longer amount of time in a different way, my legs look more shapely and lean in that way. So that’s what I’ve seen from it so far. And I’m just not bored, and I’m going to a different gym, which is always fun, just seeing different face. So yeah, that’s what I’ve been doing so far.

19. Photography improvement [50:49]

Ok, this next question. “What accounts for your massive improvement in your food photography skills? The pics from early on weren’t always super appetizing. Now your pics are all drool-worthy. Did you take a photography course or get a fancy camera?” So I’ve had the same camera for a long time. But, what really helped with my photography was when I wrote my last cookbook, I went to Pittsburg, where I stayed with my friends Bill and Hayley from www.primalpalate.com, and they did the photography for my cookbook. So watching them, how they set up shots, next to natural light, really that’s all that I do differently. I set up a natural light, I just set up shots a little bit different, and I really look at other people’s photos and see what colors they use, how they kind of garnish the shot, and then I just kind of play around from there. I don’t even know how to work my camera; I keep I on automatic. I’m sure I’ll figure it out some day, but in the meantime, I have too much sh*t to do so I just keep it on automatic, and that’s really worked for me.

It’s just really working with light, figuring that out, figuring out what colors really go together and make a food pop, garnishes. And I like being creative. I think food photos, when I have time to take more fancy, fun food photos and get creative with it, it’s kind of like art. You know, I like doing flowers, because I think flowers are so beautiful, and they just are so warm and inviting, and I want my food to feel that same way. So yeah, that’s how I kind of do it. But I’ve just learned from other people, and then I learned from looking at food photos all the time. I follow many food bloggers, and I look how they set up shots, the colors they used and that’s it. That’s it.

20. Podcast set up [53:00]

“What is your set up with your podcast? What mike do you use, how do you record, what do you use to post and track?” So, I use a blue microphone. Thank the lord to the lovely human being out there; I’m forgetting her name, but she was a reader on my blog, left a comment and told me why the echoes might be happening in my podcast, and she fixed it! So I want to kiss you on the lips! Love you.

So I use a blue microphone to record it; I record it in garage band, then I download it and then on my blog I use, what’s it called? Power press to upload my podcast into my website, and then it goes to iTunes. It goes to Stitcher, as well, I had to set those up. But thank god my girlfriend, Joy, from Girls Gone WOD helped me with that process, because I was like; what the f*ck am I doing? I don’t know what I’m doing. And I still feel like that. But yeah, that’s what I use to do the podcast. It’s kind of easy. I don’t know what I’m doing, but kind of easy.

21. Direction of the business [54:11]

OK, this next one. “Do you see your business growing in the direction of fashion and beauty? I love the variety on your blog, and it keeps me going back every day.” Well that’s awesome! Thank you. Because I definitely; I don’t see it going just more towards beauty and fashion; I see it mixing in with that more and more, like I have over the past few years. (You can come up here; come on.) So I definitely see adding more in that, because I just think it’s super fun. I love adding in the beauty and fashion portion; but food is so important to me. So I do see my blog going a little bit more in the fitness direction; I want to expand upon that. I stopped coaching at my gym a few classes a week, so I could work more on this project that I have in my eye sight. So I see more fitness stuff going on. But you’ll definitely see beauty and fashion like you have already.

22. Maintaining weight and fitness [55:06]

This next one; “Would love to hear more about maintaining your weight and fitness. What are the challenges you face; how do you approach it? How do you monitor when you’re getting off track, and all that kind of stuff?”

So with maintaining fitness and weight, it’s all about; to me I think it’s about 80/20. So you have to take care of yourself on a regular basis; you have to work out on a regular basis; you have to eat healthy on a regular basis. And this is not like 80% super clean during the week, and then 20% is you going all out eating complete sh*t. I think it’s just about consistency. I don’t think I let myself get off track when it comes to my fitness, or my food because I don’t obsess like I used to. I just go about my daily life. If I’m eating a little bit too much sugar, I’m like, “Ok, you don’t need that much sugar. Are you really actually hungry for dessert right now? Think about it.” So those are the only things.

But, fitness and food is incredibly important, and I don’t let myself get off track, and that’s that. That’s about it. I don’t know if that even answered your question. But hopefully it did.

23. Eating out [56:24]

This next one, “How do you approach eating out in general? Do you think about portions or what you’re going to eat in advance?” I think there was another question like this, like, “What do you order when you go to certain restaurants.”

So, luckily, I live in Denver where there’s gluten free options everywhere I go. Almost every single restaurant I go to here in Denver has gluten free options where you can tell them you want gluten free, and they will tell you what you can eat. They’re amazing here in Denver, and this is why I don’t move anywhere. But I just approach is as; I’m having, if I’m eating gluten free, so I have a meal out, and I’m eating, I’ll just say, chicken; it has sweet potatoes, and has vegetables, I don’t really over do it because I’m just having a normal meal that I would have at home. Oh my god, Jackson. He’s so cute right now, he’s resting his head on my arm.

So the thing that I think you need to be most careful about when you’re eating out is the alcohol that’s involved, and that’s usually people’s downfall, because it’s so much more sugar. Or if you’re getting a huge dessert, or you’re getting a big appetizer. Say you go to Mexican and have a sh*t-ton of tortilla chips. But if you’re just having one normal meal, it’s not going to throw things crazy off unless you’re going to Olive Garden and getting all you can eat pasta; crazy sh*t like that. But if you’re eating mindfully at a restaurant (Oh Jackson. Sorry.) If you’re eating mindfully at a restaurant, I think it’s pretty easy if you’re just staying away from that sh*t food. Stay away from sh*t food. Don’t go to f*cking chains like Chili’s. That’s gross. Just stay away from that. Is that bitchy of me? I don’t know.

24. Being a brand [58:20]

Ok, this one, Cass. “Is it weird being a brand? Like you deal with so many sh*tty, judge-y comments.
And nice ones from people who adore you and are super grateful for the work you do. So is it weird that they’re directed to you and not the brand itself. If you were to do this all over again, would you do anything differently, so you could distance yourself from the brand? So you could eat some damn cheese and rice in some goddamn peace.”

Right, Cass? People and their rice conundrums. People get f*cking screwed up from that. No, I would not do anything different. I build this brand off of who I am, and yeah, that’s just who I am. So it’s very hard when people judge you, who you are, you know. But people judge you no matter where you are, who you are, what you are. Someone is going to dislike you, whether they voice it or not. The social media world is very difficult now. Thank god I don’t have a child, raising a child in this awful world that we live in that social media makes you feel so alone and so sad sometimes, and there’s judge-y things all the time that I get comments of. And it’s really hard, and people are like; “Why do you care so much what people think?” Well, it’s really hard when people are blasting you on the internet just because of who you are, and it’s very challenging. I don’t think you understand that until you go through that.

Most people are just living their Facebook life, where maybe they’ll get one random comment, somebody comes across their social media. But most people’s social media is private, so you don’t have someone coming in and judging you for who you are. So it’s very challenging sometimes. I don’t know; I love what I do an I’m really happy with the person I am, so that makes it a little bit easier. So I wouldn’t change anything. There are a few steps along the way that I wouldn’t have taken if I would have known better; you know, and I won’t’ go into those because that causes rifts and drama between people I don’t want to. But I would have made different business decisions if I had known better. But I was in my; I’m still in my 20s, and I’m still learning along the way, and I’m learning at a business that I was never taught would ever even be a business. So yeah, there’s nothing I would change. It’s taken me this far, and hopefully it can take me farther in the future. Thanks for being nice, Cass.

25. Eating fruit [1:01:05]

This next one; “I’m wondering how often you eat fruit; specifically bananas, berries, apples, citrus. I feel like I don’t see you post anything, so I’m wondering if it’s a sugar issue.” I stay away from fruit, personally, because I think it’s a waste. If I want to have sugar, I’m going to have sugar in the form of chocolate, and you can say whatever you want about fruit being a different kind of sugar; whatever, whatever. It’s f*cking sugar, and your body is processing it, and it’s sugar, and more carbohydrates than you need. I’d much rather eat my carbohydrates in the form of vegetables, get the same vitamins and minerals as you would in fruit, and then have sugar in the form of whatever sugar I prefer; like dessert, in the form of chocolate. But I think; honestly I think fruit is a waste. I really do. I just do. Sorry. That’s it.

26. Plastic surgery [1:02:04]

This next one; “Would you ever get plastic surgery. If so, what and how do you feel about it?” f*ck yeah, I would get plastic surgery, I already did. Breast augmentation about 9 years ago. And I would do it 10 times over again, and I would recommend it to any person out there who is interested in it. I think it’s the best, and I will definitely get plastic surgery in the future. I have no goals of getting any plastic surgery at this point. I have no interest in it; but if something happens and I want to get plastic surgery, I am all about it. I am pro-plastic surgery. I think it’s f*cking awesome, the technology we have nowadays. So hell yeah. You go girl.

27. Vampire facial [1:02:45]

Alexis, “I know you’ve mentioned your reluctance to try fillers in the past. Have you ever tried a vampire facial, where you inject your own blood plasma back into your face where you put the fillers?” Well, Alexis, funny you ask. So I was just at my esthetician probably 3 weeks ago, and I had a laser treatment done. I had the Venus Viva treatment, and she was like, “hey would you be interested in doing the vampire facial.” And what did I say? Oh, hell yeah, I’ll get the vampire facial.

So it’s like, micro needling. I think they microneedle your face; your face bleeds, they take the blood, they process it; I don’t know what they do to it. And then they put it back in your face. I forget; she told me, but of course I didn’t remember. and I am going to definitely try that out in probably 2 months, once my face is kind of recovered from the Venus Viva treatment I did. But yes, I will definitely be doing that. And doing a blog post about it. So stay tuned on www.PaleOMG.com for that soon. F*ck yeah!

28. Tanning for wedding [1:04:00]

Ok. This is so nice; Nicole. “You were absolutely stunning in your wedding photos; I know you value a healthy lifestyle and was wondering how you got your nice summer glow for your wedding trip. Did you spray tan before you went? If so, how did it hold up? Did the resort have any spray tan services?”

Ok, so don’t hate me, and stop judging me right now, everyone; but I went to the tanning bed and I f*cking got my tan on before I went to my wedding, because I don’t know if you’ve been to Jamaica before; if any of you have been to Jamaica, but that sun is literally pure burns on your skin. If you did not get any sort of tan before, you’re fucked. No matter how much sunscreen you put on, anything, you’re completely fucked. So I went to the tanning bed before, and got my tan on, because it was my wedding day and I was not going to be burned on my wedding day.

So yeah, that’s what I did. Judge all you want; judge, whatever you want to do. but I was not burned in my wedding photos; no sunburn anywhere. So that’s what I did. I’m sure other places have spray tan services, but I was not going to have orange streaks on my wedding day, or a burn. So that’s what I did. Sorry.

Ok. Oh yeah; ok this is also that same woman. “I love hearing about your new beauty treatments, and in other posts you’ve mentioned products and medications you’ve used to control acne. Do any of your products cause sun sensitivity, and do you have to stop using them a certain amount of time before laser products?”

None of the products I use; well, some can cause sun sensitivity, but if I’m ever out in the sun I always have a hat on, and I’ve had no issues with the lasers. If; after I finish the laser, I don’t use my products for a little bit after that. But yeah, I haven’t had any issues. I just stay out of the sun as much as possible; I keep my face out of the sun.

She also asks, “If so, do you have any issues with breakouts before or after procedures?” And for sure. After laser procedures, I usually get a couple of breakouts and those take a little bit to recover. But yeah, I usually get one or two, as things come to the surface when you’re doing any sort of facial treatment. So yeah, that’s what I do.

29. Beans and legumes [1:06:32]

Ok, Sherry. “So I know that you sometimes eat non-paleo foods, like rice, and I was wondering if you could talk about beans and legumes, and if you stay away from them?” So I stay away from beans because they make me feel bloated and poopy. Not like literally poopy, but like, ew. They just make me feel ew. So I stay away from beans. I know plenty of people in the paleo community who still eat beans. I just don’t really eat them that often. Unless I’m traveling and beans are part of the normal diet of the place that I’m traveling at, then I’ll have beans. But I just try to stay away from them because they just make me feel bloated. So I don’t say negative things about beans, I just don’t eat them personally myself. Beans kind of weird me out in some way. They’re just kind of weird. Beans are just kind of weird. But that’s that.

30. Outfit photos [1:07:26]

So, Kristen. “I was wondering about your outfit pictures. Do you have someone that does then for you? Do you have a set up with your camera/tripod with a time delay and shutter?” No. my sister-in-law, she takes my photos for me, so I pretty much hired her when she was in between jobs (oh sh*t, sorry.) I hired her to do my photos, and now she has her full-time job and she still does them. So usually on Sundays we hook up, we do 4 to 5 different outfit photos. I bring all the outfits with me, we travel to a different area, and I change in the car. It’s very sexy. But I don’t even know how to do a timer or shutter, and I trust no one with my camera just standing about as I take photos. Trust no one.

31. Dealing with rhabdo [1:08:20]

Erica, “Have you ever had the experience of dealing with someone who had rhabdo?” No. I have not dealt with anyone personally getting rhabdo. I have known one person who is a CrossFit Games athlete who got rhabdo; he got it in his arms, and his kidneys shut down. And he was super fucked up from it. But, I have not dealt with any normal CrossFit athlete getting rhabdo. But if you’re having issues and getting close to rhabdo, you need to back the f*ck off, calm the sh*t down. Yeah, calm your tits down a little bit, slow it down, and hydrate the f*ck. You’ve got to drink water.

32. CrossFit shoes [1:09:06]

CrossFit shoes, Katie. And I had a couple of people ask this question. “It seems that you wear a lot of non-CrossFit specific shoes, is that for any particular reason? It seems like people are obsessed with Metcons, Nanos, or Innovates for CrossFit workouts, and wouldn’t think of wearing anything else. And do you wear lifters if you’re doing front or back squats or snatches?”

So I don’t wear CrossFit specific shoes because I don’t give a f*ck. And I did while I was competing in CrossFit, but now I just do not care. I want to wear shoes that are cute, so that’s it at the end of the day. And I love buying new workout shoes. So I just wear any shoes that I prefer. I like flat shoes. I don’t wear like running specific shoes, because I’m not a runner, and I can run 400 to 800 meters, or even a mile in CrossFit style shoes. So I just wear all kinds of different shoes; but stay tuned next week on the blog, I’m doing a blog post all about the different shoes I wear in my workouts, and what workouts I do them for and why I love certain shoes. So I’ll do a whole blog post about that.

I do not wear lifters. I used to wear lifters when I was competing in CrossFit, but now I feel like if I can’t do a movement without lifting shoes on, then I probably shouldn’t be doing that weight, or that movement. I don’t know; I can snatch in flat shoes, I can back squat in shoes; regular flat shoes, so I don’t need lifters. I have them, I never wear them. I haven’t worn them since I stopped competing. I just feel like I’m not lifting heavy enough weight to need to wear those. So that’s what I see. But stay tuned on the blog, because I’m going to talk about all kinds of different shoes. I just got some from Nordstrom in the mail, and I can’t wait to show you those, because I’m so obsessed with them. Have I worn them yet? No. but I’m going to wear them this week and let you know what I think.

33. A typical Juli day [1:11:01]

Ok, let’s see. Brittany. “What does a typical day look like for you?” So, I kind of talked about this when I talked about what I do, how I became a full-time blogger. But every single day is a little bit different. So, usually I wake up around; lately I’ve been going to bed earlier, so I wake up around 5:30 to 6, because my husband has been working out early in the morning. So I wake up 5:30 to 6, I finish my blog post up for the day that I’ve kind of worked on the night before, but I finish it up that morning; post it, send it out to social media. Then I make breakfast, walk Jackson, kind of get ready. I’ll usually put on some sort of makeup so I feel like I have my life together; I’m not just in my pajamas all day. So I’ll put on a little bit of makeup. I usually have to go grocery shopping and get stuff that I’m going to cook that day. I’ll cook one to two recipes, I’ll work on emails, I’ll moderate comments on my blog. I’ll work on the next blog post for that next day, I’ll plan recipes that I have coming up. So it’s a lot of just kind of tedious; just kind of going through the motions, like planning recipes, planning blog posts, making sure I get everything done so when I leave out of town I have recipes done, loaded up for those days that I’m out of town.

Then say I’ll coach that day, I’ll usually make dinner for me and my husband and work a little bit more at night. And then I try to just shut the computer off. Now that he’s home a little bit earlier, because he’s working out in the morning, I’ll try not to go to my computer. But a lot of times, it’s making sure I post a lot on social media, post different things, share stuff about previous recipes, new recipes, outfits, I might have to do outfit photos that day. Edit photos; it’s just kind of all over the place. But that’s what a typical day looks like. Me and my husband have been watching The Office from the beginning, so yeah, we’ve been watching the office right now. Sometimes I cheat and watch them without him, and then I have to watch them all over again. It’s great. So yeah, that’s what I do, that’s what a typical day looks like. And then he passes out by like 8:30, because he got up at 5:30 to workout, and I pass out by 9:30, 10. That’s our usge. That’s our usge now.

33. Keeping a schedule [1:13:36]

So this next question; Jaime. “How do you keep up with a schedule since you work from home, not go stir crazy, and stay on top of your to-do list?” So working at home can be very challenging. Oh, I didn’t even say in that last thing that I go work out. {laughs} So I go workout usually in the morning or the afternoon, it just depends on my day. But the things that make me make sure I don’t go crazy is I walk Jackson, one to two times a day depending on how nice it is outside. If it’s nice, I walk him twice a day, and that’s so I can put my headphones in and listen to a podcast, not look at my phone, not look at my computer. So walking him becomes my free time; my hobby time where I can just listen to a podcast and zone out. and that helps me not go stir crazy; having a dog as well, so I can talk to something {laughs}. Really helps so I’m not just talking to the people on the internet that I’ve never met in person. And then going to a workout. So just either getting a workout in the morning, so I feel productive right away; and morning means like 9 a.m., nothing like crazy early. But then, say I’ll workout at 4:30, that just gets me out of the house by the time I’m just over working. So those are the things that help me from going stir crazy. But I definitely talk my husband’s ear off when he gets home. I’m not sure that he loves that; but jokes on him!

34. Rapid fire questions [1:15:00]

Oh my gosh; this time has gone so long! We’re at an hour and 15 minutes and I have like 47 more pages. F*ck! Ok. Let’s do some quick ones. “What do people in your CrossFit class do that annoys you most?” When people are late; I hate when people are f*cking late; and then when people act like they know what they’re doing, and then they’re a sh*t storm. So they act like they know what they’re doing, they didn’t listen, and they’re still not listening when you’re giving them tips, and they’re a sh*t storm in their workout. I hate that. But I really hate when people are late for no reason. If someone is late and it’s just because traffic, because traffic sucks in Denver, I get it; but if you’re consistently late and you don’t apologize, or you’re a drop-in. if you’re a drop-in, and you’ve been to other gyms and you know you have to fill out a waiver; why the f*ck did you come right as class starts? You should have gotten there like 40 minutes early. Don’t be a dick. Don’t ever do that.

“Have you always lived in Colorado and would you consider moving?” Yes, I’ve always lived in Colorado, since I was born, and I love Denver. I could live here forever; it’s absolutely amazing, but I secretly hope that me and my husband move to Austin, Texas. I love Austin. I’m going there in a couple of months. I go there once a year. It’s the best. I understand that it’s really hot in the summer; but it’s the f*cking best. So I’m trying to talk my husband into that; fingers crossed.

“Do you think the key to your recent weight loss was due to an increase in cardio and decrease in heavy lifting?” Ok, let’s get one thing straight. There was not a recent weight loss; I’ve been losing weight for the past 3-plus years. So, I lost about 30 pounds in 3 years, it wasn’t like just a couple of weeks I lost weight. So, no. I think it has to do with eating more, because I was restricting myself, and not stressing out about my weight. Not thinking about my weight every 10 seconds, and f*cking up my cortisol levels. So I think it was; yeah, eating more, lifting less over the past few years, because I was lifting so heavy in the past. (Sorry dog.) And not being a stress case. Stress really fucks a body up, guys.

“Top 5 cities, and why? “Austin, Portland, San Diego, where else do I like? (Where else do I like, Jackson?) F*ck. I can only think of 3? Where else, Jackson? I don’t know. Those are my top 3. Because they’re all food related, and nice weather. God, I f*cking love Portland’s food. I only have 3 for you. That’s it. And they’re all because of food.

Let’s see; this question, “When you travel, hotel or Air B&B?” Both are great, but an Air B&B, when you get a kitchen and you feel like you’re at home, it’s so nice. Especially if you’ve been on the road for a while. Love Air B&Bs.

“What do you think about the Beautycounter phenomenon that has swept the paleo community?” Beautycounter f*cking really has swept the paleo community, and I’ve tried many Beautycounter products, and they’re good for the body and that’s awesome. I just don’t care enough about that, I guess? I don’t know. I think t’s awesome, and there are great products out there, and maybe it will sweep my phenomenon. I don’t know what I’m trying to say there. but I think it’s awesome and they have great products; I just love the products I use already and that’s why I haven’t really gotten into it. But it’s an awesome company, and I think those people make f*cking bank money off that. So good on ya.

Let’s see; let’s see what else. “Who is your favorite Games athlete, and what’s been your favorite Open WOD?” I have no idea who any of the Games athletes are. So I cannot answer that. And I; what’s your favorite Open workout? Are there any favorites? I don’t really like doing any of them. So nothing. The only thing I like about these Open workouts is the party we have at our gym afterwards, and everybody hangs out. so I really shouldn’t even have answered that question. Sorry I suck. But I just don’t give a f*ck, and don’t know any of them.

“Microblading; was it worth it? How much did it cost, how often do you have to go to get touchups?” Microblading was definitely worth it. It cost around $500, where I’m at, and you have to go in every 3 to 5 years for touchups. Highly recommend it.

“I know you cook dinner for your husband, but does he stick to paleo when he’s away from home?” So, yes, I cook paleo for my husband, and he eats pretty much gluten free when he’s by himself. He was having some bad migraines, and he went to a specialist, and they recommended he eat gluten free, and so he asked me about that, and he pretty much asks for gluten free stuff wherever he goes. Say he’s at work and they get pizza, and he has nothing else around, he’ll just have regular pizza. But he is a really mindful eater to begin with, so he keeps his sh*t together. He’s f*cking awesome.

35. Follow up on Moderator versus Abstainer podcast [1:20:28]

“After listening to your podcast with Vanessa, do you think everyone is hardwired as an Abstainer or Moderator, and can’t ever change? I feel like Vanessa’s description of being an Abstainer sounds very; for the lack of better words, chaotic. Or, is the inability to effectively moderate a symptom of excessive dieting? Before you had the F-it moment with food, did you feel like you could never moderate your eating?”

And yes! I actually wanted to touch upon that, but I was just listening to Vanessa and kind of spaced it. But I always thought I was an Abstainer. I thought I had to stay away from food altogether; but that led to overeating whenever I did that. So when I said my F-it moment, that was me being able to moderate my food, because I didn’t feel like I was being held back in what I was eating, so then I wanted to overeat as soon as I could eat something. So, I think a lot of people think; I want people to know that you may think you’re an abstainer, but you might now be. So when I said f*ck it and just started eating what my body was craving, then I don’t ever go over-board. I don’t feel like I stuff my face until I’m overly full because I could have that at any point that I wanted to. Like last night I had chocolate, and I had 2 pieces of a chocolate bar, and then I was satisfied because, you know, I know I can have that at any point and I don’t feel restricted.

So I totally feel like anybody could be a Moderator if they were able to be wired; I don’t know. I don’t know; that’s a hard question. But I just do want to let people know that I thought I was an Abstainer for a long time, and it was actually I was just restricting myself and I really could moderate myself if I just let my body have more of what it was craving. So I hope that answers your question.

36. Finding “your” paleo [1:22:37]

Let’s see. Oh; “Can you talk about how you defined what your version of paleo is? It seems like everyone has their own rules they follow, and I’m wondering how you decided which ones fit you. It seems like people follow a combination of gluten free, dairy, added sugar free, whatever, whatever.” So, for me I ate paleo; I ate really strict paleo for a long time. And then it was my F-it moment, I’m going to eat more of what I want, because I’m not seeing the results I want. So I dabbled with rice, and I didn’t have stomach issues with it, and I actually had more energy and felt better in my workouts and day to day life, and then I would add in some gluten free baked goods; like bread, and see how that went. I try not to go overboard with the gluten free stuff, because it can have a lot of unneeded stuff, but I mess around with dairy a little bit and try not to go overboard.

I just try not to go overboard with things that I know I don’t need in my daily life. I don’t need gluten free bread every day in my daily life; it just helps me mentally and physically sometimes. So I’ll just have it sometimes, but it’s just testing and retesting. Trying things out, see if white potatoes feel good for you, and removing it from your diet and adding it back in. but it’s just a lot of playing around and testing things out. yeah, just messing with your diet. So I’ve been doing this for 6, almost 7 years, so it’s a lot of testing and retesting. Your body changes, and you just kind of figure it out over time. So yeah.

37. When significant other doesn’t eat paleo [1:24:21]

“Do you have any suggestions.” I’ve got to wrap this sh*t up, guys! F*ck we’re at a long time. “Do you have any suggestions of how to encourage my not-so paleo friendly fiancé to eat the same things as me? I find myself cooking extra side dishes to make both of us happy, and it’s just plain annoying.” F*ck that. You make the food; oh my god, I’ve totally said this before. You make the food, he better f*cking eat the food that you make. If my husband doesn’t like something; ok, figure out your own sh*t. but he eats what we’re eating, and once in a while he’ll be like, “Ok, can we not eat kale? We’ve been eating kale every single night. Can we do a different vegetable?” but at the end of the night, he’s eating what I’m eating. If he doesn’t want to eat it, he doesn’t have to. He can figure out his own sh*t, and that’s that.

But if you’re taking the time to cook for someone, and they are requesting something else, I think that’s very incredibly rude. I don’t know, I’m not in your house, but if food is put in front of them, if they’re not going to eat it, that’s being very childlike, and they need to get their sh*t together before you get married. That’s just my two cents. My bitchy two cents. But no, they should eat what you eat, and that’s that.

38. Invisalign [1:25:33]

Ok, I’m only going to do two more questions; if I missed yours, please come to the podcast, but let’s just do two more so I can wrap this sh*t up! I’ve got to go coach, I’ve got to fill in tonight. Ok, “You mentioned that you did Invisalign. Can you talk about the process? I’m super interested in straightening my fangs out.”

Ok, so I did Invisalign. A few months ago, I think I did it for 5 or 6 months. You go in, you get molds, you have to wait a month, you get the molds in. he would give me two to three trays, and then I would go back in. he would make sure the teeth are lining up correctly, nothing has to be changed, and give you two to three more trays. I had 10 trays total, and each tray was two weeks long. So I saw the dentist every 4 weeks or so, maybe even a little bit longer if he thought everything was going well.

I thought it was awesome; I love it, I’d recommend it to everybody. I think it was fantastic. The only thing that sucks is to move your teeth effectively, a lot of times they have to put these little nubs; like kind of cement numbs on your teeth, so they kind of stick off your teeth. It’s almost like the stuff that they put down to put braces onto your teeth. So that part sucks, and it kind of gets discolored, it makes your teeth look a little bit yellow. I was super self-conscious about it, and f*cking hated it. So that was the only part that sucked; everything else was fine. Highly recommend.

39. Wardrobe organization [1:27:03]

Ok, last question, and then I’ve got to wrap this sh*t up. “You have a spectacular wardrobe; how do you keep them all organized? Do you have a giant walk-in closet? I saw in your bun video that you had clothes behind you on racks.”

Ok, so I don’t have a huge closet. We have a walk-in closet, but it’s nothing crazy. It’s just kind of a normal average sized walk in closet. So I have that, and then my office has kind of become a second closet, so that’s the rack you saw behind me in that video. I keep the clothes that I needed to photograph; anything new outfits, or new items, new shoes I keep in my office so I can be reminded of showcasing those outfits in upcoming posts. So that’s how I keep track of stuff. But I get rid of clothes all the time. I either sell them or give them to my sister-in-law, or I donate them. So I go through clothes a lot, because that’s part of my business at this point. But I don’t think have a crazy, crazy closet. I just have an average closet, nothing spectacular, that’s for sure.

So yeah, those are questions! Thank you guys so much for sending in all those questions. I cannot believe how long this podcast was. I don’t really know if my storage on my computer can even store this, so that’s going to be interesting. But thank you guys so much for sending in your questions. If I didn’t answer something and you’re like, “I f*cking hate Juli, she’s a bitch” Just come over to www.PaleOMG.com, I can answer it in the comment section there. not to worry panda face.

But come visit me at the blog. This week I talked about; I had 3 brand new recipes on the blog. I had a frittata, I did an ice cream, and then I did a Pad Thai casserole. So I have lots of new stuff, weekly workouts. I talk about my open experience, my first workout. Yeah, that’s what I’ve got going on on the blog. So head over to the blog, hang out with me. How do you find tops that fit a muscular body? Ive been doing crossfit for about 5 months now, and none of my tops fit my shoulders/lats. I feel like im on the verge of ripping them everytime i try to take a shirt off.

    1. juli says:

i honestly don’t think i’ve had many issues with shirts, other than jackets sometimes being tight around the lats. but most of my shirts are either flowy or super stretchy! definitely check out my friday posts for some shirt inspiration because i rarely run into that problem with the clothes i choose!

  2. Sarah says:

I’ve always wondered- does you husband do CrossFit? Do you coach him!?

    1. juli says:

he used to! that’s how i met him, at the gym! and i coached him for probably over a year before we started dating and coached him for probably 3+ years before he started going to a different gym that was more convenient for his schedule

  3. Anna Wannemuehler says:

    Hey Juli,
Just listened to your podcast and you crack me up. You’re awesome. Just ate the Stuffed Plantains from the cookbook yum!!!
Question What do you eat/drink before a workout for fuel? People I workout with drink “preworkout” or C4. I’ve had heart issues in past pregnancies and anything with tons of “sugar” makes my heart race. Currently I eat a banana on the way to the gym but I’d love some suggestions.
    Thanks!!

    1. juli says:

i don’t usually do a pre workout, definitely not any sort of drink. i think if you have to take some pre workout because you’re low on energy, it’s most likely because something is missing in your diet and that shouldn’t just be overlooked. i simply eat maybe 1/2 a larabar or a yogurt beforehand, but that’s it!

Hi Juli! I have been following you for several years now and just want to tell you how much I admire you. I have struggled with body image issues since a young age. Reading about your personal journey and the tips you have shared along the way have helped me more than anything else. If you are ever looking for a virtual assistant, I seriously would do it as a volunteer. Keep doing you, Juli!

  5. Brittany says:

Hi Juli! Thanks so much for answering my questions about your podcast setup. I forgot to ask…how do you record when you have a guest on? Thank you!!

    1. juli says:

i downloaded this program called call recorder and it automatically pops up when you open Skype and then you just hit the record button once you are on the call you want to record!

  6. Zully says:

Hi Juli! Thanks so much for all of the hard work you do and put into your blog/podcast. I had a question about what you eat vs. what your husband eats. Our metabolisms are completely different. Just to give you an example, we went to dinner and he had a GIANT sub with 2 sides of baked beans and mac & cheese. Went home and he had leftover pizza and then finished the night with a pint of ice cream… Meanwhile, I sit next to him while he is eating all of this, I am the one who gains weight, while he just loses weight (#asshole #ilovehimiswear).. Anyway, I wanted to see if you could possibly do or maybe incorporate a what you eat in a day with what your husband eats for a day. I am curious to see the portion sizes or what additional snacks he eats compared to you. My husband and I were doing some macro stuff a while back and he was eating triple what I was supposed to be eating, so I just wanted to see how that translated into the paleo world, since I am new on this. Thanks again!

    1. juli says:

i might do that sometime! the only thing that is hard is that he doesn’t eat most meals at home, he eats breakfast and lunch while at work and we only eat breakfast together. but when we do eat together, he doesn’t usually eat that much more than me. but he’s not a huge guy. he’s 6’1 and probably 185#. so if i give him snack foods, he will go to town on those, but when it’s regular meals with veggies and meat, he just tends to eat a little more meat. but i love the idea of showing both meals so i’ll try to do that on a weekend sometime and incorporate that into one of my weekly workouts posts!

  7. Johanna says:

So i was listening to one of your podcasts and you mentioned fascia blaster. How’s it going with it? Are you seeing results ?
    Ty

    1. juli says:

i’ve loved it so far!! i can’t speak on results quite yet, it still hasn’t been long enough, but i really like it so far!

      1. Gabriella says:

Hi Juli! Are you still using the Fascia Blaster? Any results?

        1. juli says:

i haven’t been! with it being summer and not wanting to have bruises all over my legs and since i’ve been traveling a ton, i just haven’t used it much!

    Hi Juli,
I purchased the Eating Evolved bundle pack and so far I am loving it. The coconut butter cups are amazing! I also absolutely love the roasted coconut butter but curious what you eat it with. I’ve just been eating it from the jar but I’d like to pair it with something. It’s not very creamy but maybe heating it will help. Might try it in my coffee tomorrow. Thoughts or ideas?

you could definitely put it in your coffee. i did that a long time ago when i cut out dairy! but putting it on apples or bananas is always delicious!
