Well these were stupid hard to get a picture of. And I wanted to eat. So I gave up pretty quickly on making the picture look better. My bad. Just trust me that these little wraps are delicious. You’ll never miss sandwich bread again. Or bagels. Gosh I love me a bagel sandwich.
I’m so excited to leave for Austin to Paleofx in 2 days! Paleofx is like a huge paleo family reunion. I haven’t seen some of these people in seriously a year, since the last one. I’m not a huge fan of listening to the panels, probably because I get anxiety about people throwing up their opinions all over the place, so I’ll probably spend most of my time outside of the venue. Meaning in restaurants and hopefully shops. You always have to shop on vacation, right? Right. Anywho, I plan on trying as many restaurants as possible. I had a couple bad experiences last year, so this time I plan on figuring out all my own restaurants. I will absolutely be going to 24 Diner (we already planned lunch/dinner there for our first night) and La Barbecue which is one of the best bbq food trucks I’ve ever come across. Oh, and Jeni’s Ice Cream. Obviously. But that’s all I really have planned. Do you know of any amazing restaurants in Austin, TX?? Please give me all the advice in the world, pretty please!!
Oh duh, I’ll also be going to a CrossFit gym. I think I’ll only go once, mostly because I’d rather pack pretty clothes than workout clothes, but I’m pretty excited to try a new gym! Looks like I’ll be heading to Fortitude Fitness-Crossfit 78702. That’s quite a name. But I heard from someone lovely that they will have a really good workout planned for the weekend, so I’m in. Gotta keep up with my fitness while I’m stuffing my face.
Speaking of CrossFit, I totally forgot to tell you guys. This workout below truly sucked the big one. I like to talk about random super hard workouts so other people can try them that don’t go to my gym, CrossFit Broadway. It was absolutely miserable. I love workouts like that. I wish they came around always once a week. It felt pretty similar to 14.5. Check, check, check, check it out:
4 x 5 min AMRAPS Of: ( 2 min rest between)
400 m Run
then AMRAP Of,
5 Power Snatch (135/95)
12 Pull Ups
Speaking of things that are adorable. Oh wait, I wasn’t talking about adorable things. Who cares, it’s time for Jackson’s close up!! Excuse his birthday suit. He doesn’t understand that we don’t fling those things around at the gym. At least he crossed his legs.

While my husband was in the DPS Academy in Austin we always enjoyed The Egg & I. They had a great breakfast menu & are reasonably priced!! Enjoy!!
Juli, I’m super new to Paleo (week 3) and I’m wondering how you are able to make “paleo-friendly” choices at restaurants? Every time I have gone out I have just had salads and its getting old. Do you constantly have to ask for lists of ingredients? Also, I know most restaurants use an obscene amount of butter for cooking, do you ever ask them to use healthier oils or is butter ok in moderation?
if i’m eating out at restaurants, it’s usually celebrating something. so i honestly don’t worry much about the ingredients. i stay away from gluten and get bunless burgers or a breakfast hash, but i personally don’t have enough allergies to hunt to owner down to ask about every ingredient
Are those root vegetable chips I spot in the background?! I’ve been seriously obsessed with those! So delicious.
If you love Indian food, you need to go to The Clay Pit. Best Indian food I’ve had (Yak and Yeti in Arvada is a close second) and it is one of the best rated in the country. Also Amy’s Ice Cream. And go drool all over everything in Central Market. There are usually free samples in the produce section.
Cupprimo has AWESOME gluten free cupcakes (in North Austin off of Spicewood/McNeil and Hwy 183) and Asthers Ethiopian is delish too (off I-35, downtown by UT)
If you go to Kerby Lane, make SURE to get a gluten free gingerbread pancake and their cowboy queso. Sooo good!!
I also love Mighty Fine for burgers and Verts kebabs for a little something different
Oh, and rather than Clay Pit, I’d like to suggest Tarka. They have ties to the folks who run Clay Pit, but I think Tarka is better…and it’s cheaper, and located in central Austin, Round rock and south Austin. Hope you have a GREAT visit to Austin!!
Oh, and rent a stand up paddle board one morning on Ladybird Lake. That’s one of my favorite things to do.
Aaagh I LOVE Austin!!! I was just there in December and had a total blast with my good friend. I definitely recommend that you check out Torchy’s Tacos (torchystacos.com). Totally not paleo, but SO WORTH IT! Another great place for a nice brunch, lunch or dinner would be Swift’s Attic (www.swiftsattic.com). As for your wod, we totally did a similar one yesterday at York Street. It was 4rds with a 16min time cap of 400m run followed by 12 pull-ups and 8 from the ground back squats at the same weight (95#). Ugh!
Hey Juli,
So I frequently get recipes off you blog, and admittedly I haven’t read any posts yet this week, but I was floored to hear you might be coming to Fortitude this weekend?! My husband and I own that gym and we’d love to thank the person who passed our name along to you. We’d also love to know what day you’re coming so we can plan a party (ie. a hard WOD to celebrate). Drop me an email if you could share the details! annemarie@fortitudefitnessaustin.com

Yay!! Thanks for commenting! I think I’m going to come in on Saturday, but I won’t be sure until Thursday once I decide what my plan is!
Hey Juli –
Awesome, I will thank Lauryn in person when I see her this Thursday. This Saturday we are actually doing a gymnastic seminar for our athletes – so our normal Epic Saturday WOD will actually be pushed to Sunday. I would hate to think we’ve removed the opportunity for you to come check us out, but we learned from the Open that we’d all like to improve in this area so we’ve set-up a special seminar on 4/12. I completely understand that Austin has so many great things to offer that Sunday might be out of the question but let us know if it could work into your schedule. Enjoy your trip and thanks again for the shout out. 🙂
No I can always come Sunday!! I don’t mind either way
oh forgot to say, it was lauryn lax!
LOVE that girl and her blog, Juli! What a strong human being, that girl! Love, love, love Austin, by the way! My husband found a great box near Moonshine restaurant when we were there in August. GO TO BANGER’S on Rainey Street! BEST SAUSAGE EVER!!!!! Get the socks, too! Have a great time!!
I am moving to Austin this week and am trying to get there by Saturday so I can come to PaleoFX on Sunday! Hopefully all goes well on the drive from Virginia. Love all the restaurant ideas, def going to be taking note. And I need to find a new box so I might check that one out.
ohmylord. that pic of Jackson is too much! so freakin’ cute. I can’t even stand it.
