Southwest Turkey Sliders over Spicy Avocado Slaw

OMG I’m excited. No, not because I am making caramel bars today, but because we got something really cool this week. You ready? You excited?

MEN’S PALEOMG SHIRTS ARE HERE! Boom.

So happy to have some men actually repping my shirts! That’s crazy! These men shirts are great. They are American Apparel 50/50 and say PaleOMG in yellow. Straight up yellow people! That’s the color of happiness if you didn’t know! And happy PaleOMG clothed people = healthy people. It’s science. I’ve done the research. Which has included eating far too many dates while wearing a PaleOMG shirt and being judged by paleo purists. Being judged sucks.

Check out some of the ladies who have been rocking the women’s tanks and tshirts at their gyms! Badass women all around the world! So cool!

Ashley from Alaska reppin her tank in Alaska during wod 12.3!
Robin getting some of her first unassisted pull ups in her tank at CrossFit 816!
Michelle kicking butt in wod 12.2!
Ann still looking amazing in her T-shirt after wod 12.2 at her gym in Baltimore!
Tracy killing it in wod 12.2 at CF Roots in Boulder, CO! She competed in the Open last year while she was pregnant!!
My cousin Michelle looking daaamn good in her fancy pants in Colorado Springs! I like to think I’m the one who made her try CrossFit 😉

Holy balls. If that ain’t inspiring right there, I don’t know what is. All amazing women, all taking care of their bodies, and all being incredibly supportive of me. So.Freaking.Cool. Thank you guys for your support and for sending me your pictures!!

So what about you men out there? Are you manly enough to sport the PaleOMG men’s shirt like my friend here? He looks wicked good in it! I know you will too! Click here to purchase yours today!! And email me your pics of yourself in your PaleOMG shirt! I don’t care if you’re eating a bowl of ice cream covered in oreo cookies while sporting the shirt, I still want to see how awesome you look in it!

Let’s talk about food.

Southwest Turkey Sliders over Spicy Avocado Slaw

  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the burgers

  • 1lb ground turkey
  • 1/4 red onion, minced
  • 1/4 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 poblano pepper, diced
  • 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground red pepper
  • salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon fat (I used bacon fat)

For the slaw

  • 1 small head of cabbage or bag of cabbage, chopped
  • 2 avocados
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

First make your burgers

  1. Add all your ingredients for your burgers in a large bowl.
  2. Shape small burger patties.
  3. Heat up a large skillet under medium heat with a bit of fat in it (I used bacon fat) and add your sliders. Flip after about 3-5 minutes or when you see the sides of your sliders begin to turn a white color (meaning they are cooking through).

Now make your slaw

  1. Pull out your handy dandy food processor, add all your ingredients for the slaw other than the cabbage and pulse until smooth.
  2. Pour your avocado “mayo” on the cabbage and mix. Top off with a bit of salt and pepper.
  3. Place your cabbage on a plate and top off with your sliders!
  4. Consume!

  1. its 10am here in Ecuador and i want to eat right now! i might have to run to the market to buy the ingredients 😉

  2. I’m surprised the guy in the tshirt modeled one that actually fits. Usually that guys all about wearing extra mediums

  3. The ladies with big “ladies” like the men’s sized shirts too! Will take a picture when I get mine in the mail 🙂

  4. Well JB, I promised that if you produced them I would buy one. Just placed my order!
BTW, thanks for the recipe, now I know what I’m making for dinner tonight

  5. Alaska women kick butt! Go Ashley!! (as for the recipe, turns out I have all that in my fridge and needed inspiration). I am inspired! FOOD!!!!! ~LJ in Anchorage

      1. Turkey sliders were delish!! The slaw with avocado dressing was …different. Had to try it tho. Raw cabbage in my gut made for interesting next day!! Made only small batch, saved avocado stuff to just eat by itself. Love it. :). Maybe savoy cabbage would have been better than my stuff in the bag. Hmm?

  6. Okay, that’s it… how about we just agree that you put together a book with all of these recipes in it so that I can stop the endless printing that I do?? I must have a whole reem’s worth of paper in printed out recipes from your site scattered throughout my kitchen! 🙂 A book would be AWESOME! (you know… because you’re just not busy enough). By the way, your Enchilada Chicken Stew is my husband’s favorite meal that I’ve EVER cooked and I’ve gotten a ton of rave reviews of it from my coworkers who have to watch me eat it! It’s awesome served over a salad or as lettuce wrap filling! This recipe looks like another winner as usual! Dang.. there goes that printer again! LOL (can’t wait for the caramel bar recipe… just sayin’)

    1. Rebecca, I would absolutely LOVE to put together a cookbook. I just don’t know where to start or who to talk to!! That will be awesome once that day comes!

      1. Between you, the Civilized Caveman and all of your contacts, there must be SOMEONE who can hook a girl up with a cookbook deal?!? 🙂 We definitely need one from you!!! I’m sure they’d go FLYING off of the shelves (or, internet)!!

          1. Dude! Seriously! A cookbook is definately needed. I’d buy it in a heartbeat. Day three of trying recipes from your site and yet another winner. The avocado slaw rocks. I LOVE avocados and am always excited to find new uses. I can’t tell you how much your site has helped ease our families transition to Paleo. I heart you!

  7. Oh Jesus!! Now this is looks awsome with a capital A!!! Just gotta get me some avocados and this meal will be in my tummy!

      1. The cabbage at the store yesterday looked like trash so I grabbed some broccoli slaw, which worked just fine. Was good overall but I needed a touch more “pop.” I’m not sure from what, maybe just more red pepper. Round 2 today should be even better after sitting overnight.

  8. the slaw looks awesome! I have a HUGE avocado justtt about ripe and ready to go, can’t wait to dig in and I’ll have to give the slaw a try. Everyone looks rockin in the shirts!!

  9. I have what could possibly be a silly question – did you roast and peel the poblano first, or just use it as is?

  10. Hello beautiful! This sounds more delicious than I care to admit. Additionally, it’s a perfect dish to make seeing as I may or may not have fourteen avocadoes on the counter. Yes…fourteen.

    1. They are pretty true to size. I usually wear a medium in all my shirts including my tanks! And yes! We will definitely ship to Sweden!

  11. Seriously caramel bars……drooooool!!!!!!!!!

Make it happen like now woman & I mean yesterday

I guess you can tell I have 4 days to go on my 30 day paleo challenge huh, sugar is my crack & I need a hit

  12. Looks great, I’m new to paleo and your recipes are helping tremendously! I think I’ve made your jambalaya 3 times in the past month and a half! Do you think the lime and lemon juices will help preserve the avocado slaw overnight so I can send leftovers in hubby’s lunch?

      1. We had these last night, and the leftovers today for lunch. It kept really well, and was so delicious, can’t wait to make them, again! Another great recipe!

  13. Ohh my gosh I made this last night and it was fricken delicious!! So in love. LOVE. And easy (except for all the chopping into teenytiny pieces)! Loved it. Will definitely be making it again.

    1. You can buy bags of slaw already chopped! What a freakin’ life + time saver!

I hate chopping cabbage too. I need a MADALIN. Har, Juli. Yo’ mama is a funny lady.

  14. Dear Juli without an E, This recipe was rad. I’m with you…the more red pepper flakes, the better. Thank you for your totally real Paleo blog. Es-ok to lust after da nasty processed crap as long as you fillerup with the good stuff. And you, my friend, bring the good stuff. I love your blog and your thighs.
    Love,
    Julie with an E

  15. OMG JULI I AM SO MAKING THIS!

Sometime next week, as I have a ton of meat in the freezer/fridge to go through.

LOVE the slaw with avocado. What an awesome mayo substitute, as I can’t eat mayo right now anyway. Avocado is God’s food, I SWEAR.

  16. Made this the other night…so good! Even my non-paleo eating parents tried it and liked it.
Also, placing an order for a men’s shirt for my husband. I already have my tank and love it. I have to support the place where I get about 95% of my paleo recipes 🙂

  17. Juli, your women’s tanks…they fit anything like American Apparel?

Otherwise I may buy a men’s XS shirt, cuz I like how they look 🙂

    1. ive never had an american apparel shirt, but Bella tanks are pretty true to size. I wear a medium in everything, including those tanks and shirt

  18. Made this last night, my husband freakin’ loved it and so did I. made it with a side of roasted veggie “fries” and it was almost like a cheat meal! Thanks!

  19. Made this for dinner and LOVED it. Then put some extra shredded chicken in with the remaining avocado slaw and made a funky chicken salad for lunch today. It was delicious!!! I’m totally excited to have more for lunch tomorrow. So good. Thank you.

  20. Love these sliders! Made them twice already since last Thurs night. Super yummy cold for breakfast too. Or maybe I’m just weird like that.

  21. I am trying to make the switch to paleo (I’m 80%there), and stumbled upon your blog, HOLY DELISH…these were awesome and I am now scouring thru for more recipes…THANK YOU!!!

  22. Making the slaw today! Sans lime juice, cuz I’m out. May add some finely chopped onion to it.

Will post on my blog about it’s awesomeness, no doubt!

    You da bomb, Juli!

  23. AMAZING!! the slaw ROCKED! thank you! please never stop posting your fantastic recipes! honestly, we eat your food every night!!! I think the best thing is the pictures! When you make your book, (because you HAVE TO) please include pics!!!

    Big Fan!!!

  24. Fantastic Juli! John can’t stop talking about the burgers (and he is EXTREMELY critical of food). We will be making these again and again!

  25. Dumb question…Do you mix the fat (bacon fat) into the ground turkey or just use it to fry up the burger?

  26. Hubby and I have been incorporating more Paleo recipes into our meal choices and this one was tonight’s. We both loved it. He’s not an avocado fan and well, there was nothing left on his plate! Thank you so much. Today’s grocery run included the ingredients for your sweet potato egg nests, crock pot Cuban pork, Spring pasta, and Tex-Mex hash!

  27. I’m making this for the third time tonight since this recipe came into my life so I just wanted to say thanks again!

  28. I just made a small batch of the avocado slaw with broccoli-slaw. Broccoli is so much more amazing than cabbage.

Plus, I made your bacon chili from Again Faster earlier today. 2 recipes from Paleomg in one day = 1 happy belly. 🙂

  29. Made this last night and absolutely LOVED it! Thanks for making my night infinitely more delicious.

  30. The avocado slaw pretty much disappeared before the burgers were completely cooked. Brought it to a friends house and we were making a pot luck and before I knew it, it was GONE. Will def add more kick to it (I think I was too wimpy on the spices). Burgers were good but everyone voted the slaw the winner!

  31. Just made this and it was AMAZING!! I roasted the peppers for a little extra smokey goodness too!

  32. Oh my God, these are amazing! I added an egg and a little coconut flour to my sliders. My girlfriend and i ILOVE your website!

  33. Can’t eat bell peppers. Didn’t have poblano. Used 3 or 4 chipotle peppers, diced. Didn’t have 2 avocados, just one, so used Ranch Dressing to mix it up. This was so awesome!

  34. I made this the other day but didn’t have poblano or red peppers so I used jalapeno and green bell pepper… I AM in LOVE with this recipe. I even took pictures and posted it on my facebook. LOL I also did your banana bread.. I love this blog. YOU rock! I wish I could share the picture I took of the sliders.. my presentation was on point! 🙂

  35. I love that I was like “i have ground turkey..let me put into google with ‘paleo’ to see what I can make for dinner.” this comes up, and now, my night will be AMAZING.

  36. This is VERY good. Super easy to make. Super cheap to make. My husband who won’t eat cabbage ate it and loved it! He was using it as Tostito dip but we’ll let that slide.

Thanks! This will be made every week in my house.

  37. This recipe is incredible! Seriously! Just made them last night and they were a huge hit! Can’t wait to make them again.
This is my new favorite of all your PaleoOMG recipes I have tried!

  38. Just made the avocado slaw tonight. i added 2 shredded carrots and a diced red pepper, but i still think more could be added. my husband suggested a tart apple and some sunflower seeds. we both really liked the idea of combining coleslaw with a guacamole like dressing. thanks!!!

  39. Juli – saw your blog today because I was searching for Paleo recipes and this was the winner because it looked simple and delicious.

Well, it WAS! My fiance and I have been eating clean and mostly paleo for a few weeks now and we can’t believe how great everything tastes. We will certainly be making this recipe again!

My modifications: serrano peppers instead of poblano, added green onion (just a little bit for color), to the slaw: added 1/2 tsp more lime juice to the slaw & added green onions too.

Can’t wait to cook up for lunch tomorrow!

  40. Just made the sliders for the 2nd time. Substituted garam masala, b/c I didn’t have cumin, and ate them with guacamole with portobello caps as bun…yummers!! THANK YOU!

  41. Super yum! I just had this for lunch, made it last night (along with a few of your other recipes, all of which came out fantastic!). The avo does get a little ugly looking the next day but it tastes just fine. I made them using 15% fat ground turkey. I am pretty sure the lean woulda been not so yummy.

  42. Spicy creamy deliciousness! You are a hilarious food genius! We haven’t enjoyed food like that in a long time. We have enjoyed every recipe we have tried from your web site. Thanks for sharing!

  43. Yum! I modified the slaw by shredding half a cabbage, a large carrot, red onion, and jalapeno pepper. Even my toddler liked this meal, so, thanks!

  44. Made these Sunday night. Awesome!!!. Made a double batch and eating them throughout the week.

  45. Made this for my non-paleo husband and I and we both loved them! Had plenty of leftover so the next night made a sort of deconstructed tex mex meatloaf sandwich: Cauliflower puree on the bottom topped by a turkey patty, topped with slaw, topped with crumbled bacon. YUMMMM. Thank you for this recipe!

  46. I just wanted to tell you how much I love your cookbook…and even more I love that your recipes are also conveniently online so that I can put them in my online mealplanner without having to type them in. I recommend your cookbook to all of my patients! By the way I have made this recipe several times and my kid will eat cabbage this way and only this way! Thanks!

  47. Hi Juli,

I tried the link to buy a shirt and its saying the page is not found. I’d love to buy one when they fix the link. Thanks!

Awesome recipe. Might cook it tonight.

  48. Hi Juli,

I love your site. I have been eating paleo since the beginning of the year and doing crossfit. Happy to say, I have lost 35lbs this year. Love the recipes, easy to make, great tasting. So good!

I want to but a shirt, but the link says page not found. Can you let me know when it is fixed?

    Thanks,

    Rick

  49. hi, i’m new to this site and somewhat new (>1 month) to Paleo and have been looking for recipes to try. of all the sites i spent countless hours poring through, i liked yours the best. 🙂 these look delicious. i’m about to cook for the whole week so i don’t go hungry at work (which i do when i forget to pack my lunch and then can’t find anything so i eat cheese. lol). i’m very excited to make these sliders and the slaw, well and pretty much anything else i see on here.

my only hope is you never post a recipe for rabbit! that’ll turn me off right away. bunnies aren’t for nommin’; they’re for loving, like mine is now, kissing my leg under the desk while i look through recipes.

    keep up the inventiveness!

  50. My First official “I got it from a paleo website” recipe. I just made it. And it is awesome. Simple. Chop. Mix. Cook. Eat.
I can’t wait to try some of the other recipes on the site!

  51. This dish is great – I mean REALLY great. I was surprised. My daughter thought this sounded great so I agreed to make it with her. I was unsure of this recipe because I don’t really eat avocado… or cole slaw. But this is really good. I didn’t have poblano pepper so I used some diced green chilies. We also wanted a little smoother texture to the slaw dressing so we added a couple tablespoons of mayo. Also, I loved the idea to use bacon fat for cooking the sliders but I didn’t have any fat. Of course that meant I needed to cook up some bacon to generate the fat. So we chopped up 3 pieces of bacon and mixed it in with the slider mixture. So good!
