AHHHHHHHHHHHH. Presidential campaign commercials have begun and they never stop. I hate it so much. When we moved into our house, I didn’t want to have cable. I would have been totally fine with just Netflix and Amazon. But the fiancé wanted sports, so we got cable. But now I’m stuck with watching commercials of people who fight like middle school kids then laugh and smile a lot during commercials. And since I trust no one, I hate them even more. I believe nothing they have to say but then I’m forced to listen to their bullsh*t. Shouldn’t there be some sort of ‘ignore all’ button when it comes to those commercials? I mean, we can control everything else, why can’t we control that? Riddle me that!

A couple people over the past few days have asked about my chemical peel and my experience with it. So I’m going to tell you a quick story. This chemical peel thing isn’t new to me. When I was dealing with really miserable cystic acne, I tried everything. Including multiple chemical peels. So this is not a new experience for me. BUT I’ve gone to different people for chemical peels and this has been my best experience by far. So the reason I do chemical peels is simple: it makes your skin look better. It cleans it up, helps with some acne as well as scaring (which I have a lot of from my cystic acne), smoothes it out, and helps with aging. I really do think it’s one of the easiest things you can do to help with wrinkles and long term changes that we encounter as we get older. I’m a person who is happy to spend decent money on my face because I know it’s only getting older as we speak. So I see a medical esthetician on a regular basis to work on dark spots, red marks, acne as well as wrinkles. I absolutely love it and really see a difference!

So the peel itself is not that fun, that’s for sure. They just put a cream on your face and it burns and then they do it more. You hold a fan in front of your face to cool it down, but it still sucks for sure. Your skin is red and slightly orange afterwards and feels kind of tight. You definitely don’t really want to go out in public. The next day it feels tight but I was still able to wear makeup and go about my day like usual. By the end of the first day, it begins to crack and you get dry skin just like if you had a bad sunburn. And then your whole face is peeling like a motha f*cka. I used a super intense lotion to help with the peeling, but you still peel everywhere. It’s on your clothes, in your hair, on your pillow. Everywhere. It’s really annoying. I definitely makes you not want to go outside. But then by the 5th or 6th day, you skin looks amazing. The color looks even, acne is gone, it’s smoother. It’s seriously awesome. And worth all the miserable days.

And that’s that. I got one this past week just to help my skin look smoother the day of our wedding. I will still see my medical esthetician a couple more times beforehand to make sure I’m looking my best the day of! She does all kinds of fun stuff! So if you have any questions about the chemical peels, feel free to leave a comment!

Scale
  • 1/2 pound bacon, chopped
  • 10 ounces brussels sprouts, halved
  • 1/41/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup

  1. Place bacon in a large saute pan over medium heat. Cook bacon until crispy then remove and set aside. Remove excess bacon fat, leaving behind about 3-4 tablespoons in the pan.

  3. Once cooked on both sides, reduce heat to medium-low then pour balsamic vinegar, hot sauce, and maple syrup into the pan, move around the brussels sprouts then let cook for 3-4 minutes, until the balsamic vinegar thickens then add bacon back to the pan and mix.
  4. Garnish with lemon zest before serving.

I have been waiting for this recipe! Now I am kind of interested in a chemical peel and I have never thought about it before! I have a lot of freckles and some dark spots for not giving a F when I was younger and just wanted to be tan. Sounds like it would definitely help with that. Is the ‘peel’ part just referring to the shedding process? They don’t actually peel your skin off haha?

    1. juli says:

hahaha correct, just the skin peeling off after the peel, not them peeling off your skin hannibal style

Hi Juli, these look amazing, I LOVE brussels sprouts! What type of hot sauce would work best with the syrup and balsamic…I have tobasco, cholula, frank’s and sriracha??

    1. juli says:

They’re here! I’ve been waiting for these too, and I just loaded up on a butt ton of brussels from Costco so I am so eating these for breakfast, lunch, and dinnah. Thanks for the recipe!

Also I like a little face burn. Ain’t nothing wrong with a chemical peel.

Recently found your blog and been loving it! Love making Brussels sprouts and will want to try these. However I never get them crispy enough. Do you know what I could be doing wrong?

    1. juli says:

you’ll never get them as crispy as restaurants unless you deep fry them. so you could definitely do that yourself if you have the right tools!

This would also be really good with chipotle in adobo instead of hot sauce. Or shaved instead of halved and added to a BBQ pulled pork or chicken pizza with the crust from the cookbook! Thank you for this wonderful recipe 🙂

Haha, I know how you feel about the TV ads, they used to drive me nuts. In the end, my fiancee and I threw our TV out one day and haven’t had one for years. Turns out we spend much more quality time together now. Oh and thanks so much for sharing your peeling experience, that does sound pretty intense. Good to hear it’s actually worth all that trouble 🙂 And the recipe looks amazing! I used to hate brussels sprouts but now I can’t get enough 🙂

  9. Vanessa says:

I have acne scars that are currently healing, pretty fair skin that is sensitive. Do you think I could get a peel and not look like a tomato at work all week? 🙂

    1. juli says:

i have no idea, i’m no specialist so you would have to ask someone who was. for me it wasnt the redness that held me back from things, it was the peeling.

I just harvested FRESH brussels sprouts from our garden this evening and steamed them a few minutes and tossed w/ butter/salt/pepper. They were amazing but I am hoping to try your recipe with the next batch! It’s taken an incredible amount of time waiting, waiting, waiting. after planting seeds back in September!! But the freshness is hard to beat. SO worth the wait!!
