I am not a nutritionist or a medical professional. Please talk to your doctor before taking any supplements or changing your diet.
If you’ve been here for a while, you know I’ve battled acne for YEARS. I’ve cut out gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine, and everything in between. I’ve tried every skincare product, treatment, and protocol along the way and a couple things have helped tremendously, like the bean protocol! It made an insane difference in my skin thanks to getting adequate soluble fiber into my diet on a daily basis after years of it lacking due to being strict paleo. But I’ve still dealt with acne sprouting up for no apparent reason. I even decided to find a functional medicine doctor to really dig into what is going on in my body, what is lacking, or what shouldn’t be there. I’ll be sure to share those updates as the test results roll in. Can’t wait to share my stool test details, I know you are DYING to hear more about that.
Anywho, as I’ve shared my struggles on instagram, I always have people send me messages of different pills or potions that they recommend, but it can get a bit overwhelming on what to trust or where to start. So when a woman messaged me about a youtube video I needed to watch, I kind of ignored it a bit because I didn’t have time to watch the video. But when she messaged me again a couple weeks later, really pushing me to watch the video, I finally said fuck it and watched the eleven minute video. I mean, what did I have to lose? Well…A LOT, actually. This eleven minute video I watched 3 or 4 weeks ago has made a HUGE difference in my skin. Not only does it share the causes of acne along with the different types of acne, but it shares a few simple supplements you can add to your daily routine to greatly improve your acne. And as soon as I watched this video, I ran to the store, loaded up on some new supplements, and started taking them that night.
And guess what? Almost INSTANTLY my acne reduced. The acne I had on my face calmed down and I wasn’t getting any new spots. But the craziest part was the fact that I was about to start my period the week I started the supplements. I started my period around 11 years old and that means I’ve hard hormonal acne around that time of the month for 22 years in a row, like clockwork. Even with the bean protocol, I still would have my hormonal acne pop up. But as I started these supplements, I had absolutely no breakouts as my period started up and throughout the week. Not one. My mind was seriously blown. For the first time in my life, I didn’t have a hormonal breakout around my period. I couldn’t believe that these few supplements had made such a huge difference in such a short amount of time. It felt like magic!
I was never huge into supplements, but I’ve now become a believer. Supplements are amazing and they can make such a huge difference in our bodies. I already take Athletic Greens every morning as a multivitamin, but once I found out about the vitamins I needed to take to help with my acne, I knew I needed to supplement with a few extra. So here are the vitamins I’ve been taking for acne:
- Virgin Cod Liver Oil (Vitamin A) – an anti-inflammatory
- Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) – enhances healing process of the skin
- Zinc – helps heal injury to the skin
I’m also taking a few other supplements on top of my Athletic Greens to help with other functions in the body, including keeping the skin happy and healthy:
- Vitamin C – encourages collagen production
- Vitamin D – mostly for immune support, but also helps with skin cell growth
- CoQ10 – mostly for cellular function, but it also helps support collagen production
- Magnesium – supports 300 functions in the body, including regulation cellular repair and regeneration
Now I’m not going to tell you how much to take or how much I’m taking because I think that is really specific to the person and I’m not the right one to ask for that. A doctor or functional MD is a better route to find out your personal needs. I’ve played around with the amounts myself after different research and I’ve found a good balance…at least I think I have. We will see what the functional MD says once my test results come back. But so far, so good! My skin has only had minor breakouts and when one begins to pop up, the supplements seem to take them down before they can really get going. I am officially a believer in the power of supplements!
I’m still eating lots of beans, cruciferous vegetables, and staying away from sugar and caffeine, but these supplements have made an even greater improvement! I can’t wait to work with the functional MD to REALLY find out what is going on in my body on an even deeper level, but for now, my constant experiments with my body and diet are really paying off. And I hope they can do the same for you! Click here to watch the full youtube video to find out even more about the different types of acne and more ways to protect your skin and help it flourish! I hope this post is helpful and gets you a step closer to curing or simply improving your acne!
Thanks for sharing this information! Where did you purchase the cod liver, B5 and Zinc from? It’s hard to know what brands to trust with the supplement industry having limited regulation.
natural grocers!

Check out Indol-3-Carbinol (it’s im Broccoli) as well. Had M2Performance coaching and the Coach gave it to me, huge difference in sebum prodcution and therefore in breakouts as well 🙂
Hi Juli! What magnesium do you use? Thanks!
Hey Juli – did you ever try the DIM supplement the Dr in the video recommended?
Did you ever find that the high percentage of Biotin in Athletic Greens was causing you to break out?
not personally!!
