Wearing high heels anywhere is so unrealistic. Especially while drinking. I’ve figured out, my toes almost always swell when I drink. Seriously, they get hot, swell up, and get tingly. Like when you’re on an airplane. Or pregnant. At least that’s what I’ve heard. I’ve never been with child.
I say this because I’m watching Sex and the City. But also, because I wore heeled boots out a week ago and my toes were crying after 2 or 7 shots of vodka. And when my toes cry, I whine. I’m an only child, so I’m sure you can imagine how often whining occurs. Answer: #fartoooften. I hate myself sometimes. And my toes. My chubby, drunk toes.
Speaking of drinking times, as you may know, the season finale of The Bachelor was on the other night and that meant girls night. And girls night includes food, more food, drinks, and more drinks. And gossip. It’s the best part. We decided for the finale, we would drink every time someone on the show said ‘connection’ or ‘love’. So I’m sure you can imagine how many drinks were downed. But that’s not what’s important here….
Sean chose….Catherine. WTF?!?! Are you serious? I was screaming at the TV. I’m not sure if it was the booze talking, but I was mad either way. This show is already complete bullsh*. I mean every single girl thinks she is in love with a guy after a couple weeks. And when I say a couple weeks, I am exaggerating. But then they make him pick the wrong person?! After telling us he’s a born again virgin?? Are you freaking serious? Way to make the Bachelor a COMPLETE bore. I mean come on. I was in pissed off-thrown for a loop-shock. It was so disappointing. I think he picked Catherine because he knew Lindsay would jump his bones. And he’s trying to keep it in his pants after living 28 years. I guess he made the right decision. Bastard.
I’m almost positive gluten poisoned me. Seriously. After eating gluten, then drinking a bottle of Kim Crawford, my stomach is f*cked. I am resisting to blame it on the alcohol. That would be out of my system by now. But this gluten from last week is haunting me. I’m pretty sure gluten is a parasite and this parasite is making babies in my insides that are very hungry children. Most are. And now they are drunk parasite children. What I’m trying to say here is, my insides hate me. I’m staying away from sugar, alcohol, and new restaurants. My life just got boring, didn’t it? Damnit.
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 1 pound bulk pork mild italian sausage
- 1 yellow bell pepper, diced
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 1 yellow onion, diced
- 2 (14 ounce ) cans of tomato sauce
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- ½ teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon dried parsley
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes
- ½ cup fresh basil, finely chopped
- salt and pepper, to taste
- 1-2 tablespoons fat of choice (I used bacon fat)
- Heat up a large saucepan over medium heat, add a couple tablespoons of fat of choice then add minced garlic cloves, the bell peppers and onion along with a little salt and pepper to the pan.
- Move vegetables around until onions become translucent.
- Add ground chicken and bulk italian sausage to the saucepan and break up the meat.
- When meat has begun to cook through, add the spices.
- When meat is almost done cooking, pour in the two cans of tomato sauce.
- Salt and pepper once more, then reduce heat and let simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- When all the flavors are well mixed, add the chopped fresh basil, mix well, and serve!
- Easy peasy! Put on mushrooms, brussel sprouts, spaghetti squash, eggs, acorn squash, really anything you want. Or eat it cold. It’s pretty damn good cold.

You’re very funny Juli! Heels suck !
This looks absolutely fabulous….
I love how you state the obvious for those of us who think it needs to be harder (ie. ‘put it on anything you want’)
I read your hashtag as Fart oooften. Can you tell I grew up with 3 older brothers? Haha. Love your blog, good eats and sense of humor.
You make me laugh so often! Thanks for your refreshing and honest outlook on life. Not to mention that your food is delicious. Keep up the good work.
Drunk toes, #FARToooften, drunk parasite children… I think our brains could be friends. Thank you for the meat sauce recipe. Everything’s better with meat. #TWSS ;)
It takes me 12+ days to recover from gluten, I so feel your pain right now….remember this the next time you want to eat it.
I hear you on the gluten. Try not to eat it any more myself, but it sneaks in there. Picked up a salmon teriyaki bowl at Whole Foods yesterday, and I think the sauce on it must have contained a fair amount of gluten. I bloated up like balloon all afternoon. Stomach cramps. You know the drill.
Sauce looks good!
Hilarious. While I may not be able to relate to your shoe pain, I could relate to the last part (“What I’m trying to say here is, my insides hate me. I’m staying away from sugar, alcohol, and new restaurants. My life just got boring, didn’t it? Damnit.”) — after avoiding it, I can say that though my life is a bit boring (and my GI tract seems to have won this round), my insides feel better.
Do you have any good corned beer, or St. Patrick’s day recipes?! Or did I just ruin the surprise? /;
no, gosh dang it. sorry to disappoint Stephanie
Definitely blame it on gluten. And high heels. Not on alcohol ;-)
Sauce looks yummy, thanks for the recipe !
Heels are the bane of my existence. When I lived in Vegas I wore them a lot. I’m so glad to be back in Colorado where it’s not expected that girls *always* wear heels. I get away with wearing them far less often. Which makes my feet very happy.
Wish I had this recipe the other night. Made a double batch of another blogger’s meat sauce and no one in my household liked it. I’m eating it because I’m cheap!!! Can’t wait to eat the rest of the other and make this!
Oh, and I wore heels last night and could hardly walk today. They suck!
For next season of the bachelor add ‘journey’ to the drinking game. Usually results in at least one person having to spend the night at the hostess’s house.
Omg no kidding my feet swell to like 3 times there normal size when I drink. So the rest of me is feeling sexy but my feet feel like flotation devices! Blame it on the aaaaacohol!
This look delicious. It is annoying all the store bought version have so much sugar! And heels are the devil, your toes are normal.
it sucked that i knew he was gonna pick catherine. my sister goes on this one site every season that has spoiler alerts and it has been right EVERY time. she told me almost 2 months ago that it would be catherine and she was right. i’m not sure how this site knows everything so soon. i figure someone working on the show has to tell them who won and obviously gets paid to do so.
i think the bigger disappointment is desiree being chosen as the bachelorette. she is such a – bore. should have been leslie – she is smokin hot.
” #fartoooften ” … “fart – oooften”??
Dang…didn’t realize 498 ppl already made that comment… sorry for being slow
Side Bar(i’m not a lawyer, but i play one on tv): love your blog. its found it’s way into my “daily website must check list” :)
OMG meat sauce and brussels YUMMMMM!!! I have an obsession with brussels and my coworkers really hate me for it, they smell fine to me!!
Eff heels, they make me wobbly (more than the usual wobble…)
What shoes do you wear on a day to day basis? Right now the only thing my feet want to wear is Toms but mine are starting to smell gross and I need to branch out…
Why ground chicken and not beef? Just curious.
just what i had on hand and actually loved it!
Whaaa? Catherine was SO much better than Lindsay! Lindsay’s too young for him and kind of boring, IMO, although I have to admit she took the rejection pretty gracefully.
Also, I think Sergio should be on Paleo Bachelor. He’s already pretty dang popular with these ladies!
This sauce is good eats. i made it tonight, interested in what the ground chicken and pork would be like together. yum yum
What was that green drink you were drinking on Instagram? And above I thought that said farts often then I re read it and was like ohhhhh snap far too often haha …. Obviously I’m slow.
I’m sorry about the messed up “glutenized” tummy. BUT I disagree with about the bachelor!!! I was rooting for Catherine (but thinking he’d totally pick Lindsay). Yes, the show is BS, but I’m still glad he picked Catherine :) Moving on to other important topics…Your thoughts on the new bachelorette, Des?
her family is cray cray.
My Doctor recommended your blog to me. I am a newbie with the Paleo. I have Diabetes and of course overweight and my husband is also. I can’t wait to get started on this new way of life. You will be helping us. Thank you… MY husband things you meat sauce will be a staple in this house. Going out to get the products tomorrow. Thanks for doing this and inspiring people. :)
2 or 7 Vodka shots! Love it. great to read someone who speaks their mind. I’m about to shake up my 3rd mojito for my Friday night and make the macadamia nut banana bread squares you posted the other day. yummo!
I stopped watching the bachelor years ago because I found it nauseating how those girls could actually be ok with the fact that they are all making out with the same person. Why waste time and just start making out with each other since that is practically what they are doing? And falling in love after a few days?!?! Those chics are, as you said, cray cray ;-)
Can you tell me what veggies you used in the picture and how you prepared them? Looks yummy!
brussel sprouts and mushrooms. just sauteed them in bacon fat with some salt and pepper!
hahahahha! this post is hilarious! And…I need to stop talking and actually MAKE one of your meals one day…I’m keep saying I’m going to and then I end up getting home and not wanting to make anything lol. Anyways, I love your outlook on life as well and you provided me with a much needed laugh on a dreary friday morning:)
Have you ever been tested for celiac disease? It sounds like you have serious issues with gluten. If you have celiac, it is important to get it in your medical charts–future hospital stays (maybe someday you’ll have pregnant toes instead of drunk toes!) will take your gluten intolerance far more serious if it is documented. It is a simple blood test. You do have to be eating a little bit of gluten for the test to work so you might want to plan for the test after a vacation where you know you’ll cheat a bit. People with celiac disease can take up to a month to heal from exposure to a few crumbs of gluten.
Thanks for your awesome site! My youngest daughter is celiac and lactose intolerant so it was easy for my husband and I to transition to Paleo when we started CrossFitting a year ago. Your banana bread gets made every other weekend around here–satisfies the gluten or sweet longings for our whole family. :)
You crack me up Juli!! I am super stoked about making this recipe this weekend for the upcoming 45 day Paleo Challenge at my gym. I’ve been trying a bunch of your recipes to “get ready” for the Challenge and I think I’m damn well prepared!! YOU ROCK!!
Made this with sauteed mushrooms in the sauce and served it over cauliflower rice. Ri-donc-ulous!!!
Awesome recipe! Thanks!
I only wear heals to ceremonies and holidays. I just can’t wear them anymore and honestly I don’t want too! I want to be comfortable not hobbled from the pain.
This meat sauce sounds great! I will have to try it some time :)
I am new to your blog so I am having fun checking out your recipes!
Just made this for dinner tonight – couldn’t wait and ate it out of the pot. My husband and I love your cooking (I have yet to make something from your site that wasn’t out of this world) and my 4 year old son loves your cooking videos. Thanks and please keep the goodness coming!
DANGGGG that looks good! I’ve been making the bolognese sauce from Practical Paleo pretty often, and lovingggg it.
…Way more than I love wearing heels, although they do make for a huge confidence booster, until 2 hours in when my toes start to cry like yours. The trick is to find that perfect pair that fit and don’t put all your weight into your toes. They’re pricesless. I have a pair of Nine West pumps that I can actually wear out all night, even dancing and standing. Priceless!
This meat sauce is incredible! Thanks for the recipe!
I would caution against using titles such as “My meat sauce that I put on everything” because that leaves the door open for people like me, who direct their attention to the comment above mine and say Thats what she said…..
Just curious, how is it paleo to cook in bacon fat? Isn’t bacon processed meat? Sorry if this is an obviously incorrect statement, I am new to this
yes, bacon is paleo, but trying to find a sugar free bacon is going to be the best. i have a link in my ingredient list for it
this recipe was great! Love the sausage and cayenne pepper, spicy is good! and I don’t necessarily like spicy!
What kind of pork italian sausage did you use for this recipe?
the kind i got in bulk at whole foods
Made the sauce last night and pored it over spaghetti squash. My husband and I decided it was a number one on our list of go to foods!
Gluten hangover is a real thing (for me at least)! Since drinking and eating crap food often go hand in hand it’s hard to tell, but it really does feel just like an alcohol hangover (without the stabbing headache) when you wake up the next morning except that IT’S STILL THERE THE MORNING AFTER THAT. And then you’re like, crap. Shouldn’t have eaten that sammich.
But then again I usually don’t get many GI effects from gluten; it makes my ADD SOOO much worse. Feels like my neurons are trying to fire through pudding. Stupid gluten. Thanks for the recipe!
This stuff is AMAZING! Thank you for sharing! I eat it at least twice a day on everything!
Loved this stuff! I mean seriously loved it. I’ve new to Paleo and this really helped me make it thru the week. Also got everything to make it again. It’s going to be a staple for me sure! Thanks so much!!!
My girlfriend, Vanessa, thought your Sweet Potato Chai Muffins were Phucking. Awesommmme. I think that This. Is. Phucking. Awesommmme. Made it on Friday and I can’t wait to eat it again.
Just made this and I can’t stop tasting it! Like, crazy delicious!!
Hi Julie! I am getting ready to start a 21 day sugar detox. Before I start I’m doing my homework and I’m wondering if this sauce should be enjoyed cautiously because of the sugar in the tomatoes. I love your recipes and ideas and greatly appreciate you sharing all of it!
i wouldn’t worry too much about it, but wouldn’t eat it for every single meal either haha
Absolutely fantastic.. i also added a little bacon and white button mushrooms. SO good!
Is this recipe gluten free?
All Paleo is gluten free.
I made your meat sauce for the first time tonight. My husband said it was better than anything we had bought in a jar! I think I’ll add mushrooms next time. I really enjoy your site. Thanks!
How often do you drink alcohol? I am four months into crossfit and it is quite evident in workouts after a weekend where I drank. How do you do it?
when I was competing, i didn’t drink for that very reason. now I drink whenever i feel like it, i just know my workout won’t be very strong the next day
I’ve recently started a paleo lifestyle, and trying to get my bf involved was hard. Last week I made this recipe and served it over zucchini noodles, he loved it so much I’m making it again tonight, I think I may have hooked him. Thank you so much, this dish is hands down the best thing ever!
Just wanted to say thank you for all the yummy looking recipe ideas Juli! My husband and I are just starting to experiment with the Paleo diet. We have 3 children and really want to start making better food choices for the whole family. All of your yummy recipes are going to make eating healthier a lot easier! Thanks again!!
Thank you for delivering THE most incredible, delicious, form of ecstasy I have ever put in my body. This is the best meat sauce I’ve had and it was very simple to prepare.
Thanks again!!!
By the way, do you purchase your bacon fat or save it from cooking?
So I’m fairly new to the Paleo Lifestyle and I am soooo loving all your recipes!! I made this sauce on the weekend and OMG delicious!! I think this is the best sauce I’ve ever made :) I had it today for lunch with the brussel sprouts that I cooked with bacon better than any spaghetti I’ve ever had. Love your blog and recipes keep them coming!!!
Milton, ON, Canada
Where do you buy ground chicken? I can’t find it anywhere around where I live!!
i buy it through tropical traditions
I love this recipe! I am sad I forgot to add the peppers but it is still amazing! Thank you!!
So I have now already made this recipe twice – and posted a pic on facebook. Which in turn has made multiple friends comment and some have now made it and exclaimed to me about it. This recipe is KILLER!!! It even got my mom to eat brussel sprouts!
I made it using ground turkey and ground pork with a tablespoon of the well-fed italian sausage seasoning. So much flavor and so excited that I have some still in the freezer!
This recipe looks awesome. I have a sh*t ton of whole tomatoes that I need to use. Do you think I could substitute the canned tomato sauce with fresh tomato? Also, do you know if this freezes well?
yes and yes!
Went to Sprouts and bought all the ingredAmints ( ; and the sauce is a simmerin’ Looks super tasty and it was easy breezy to make. yay! ( :
Okay…I snuck a taste. It has a fresh garden-y flavor to it. Now…what to put it on…lightly steamed broccoli…a bed of spinach…?? I may add a handful of raw bell peppers as a topper for some crunch. Sooo Glad I found your Site!! ( :
This is seriously one of my favorite recipes of yours. It’s now in my weekly rotation. You’re right, you can put it on anything– green beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, spaghetti squash, baby spinach– whatever. It’s also good solo. Thank you!
Just made this and it’s freakin’ awesome!! Had to post. Even my boyfriend who eats the same thing everyday loved it and is ready to change up his diet.
Do you think I could use chicken sausage instead of pork and maybe ground turkey or beef instead of chicken? Random substitutions, I know, but ground pork often doesn’t agree with me. I’m just starting to transition into Paleo (with out the support of the rest of my household :( ) but I love all of your recipes I’ve tried so far. THANKS!
im sure it would still taste great with any of those substitutions!
I didn’t have tomato sauce the night I made this, so I just put everything else together and ate it straight up with no sauce. It was amazing! It is a good idea to keep this on hand and serve it with eggs too! I am on day 12 of the DSD so I need a way to spice up the eggs!! Love the recipe!!
Subbed in beef and kangaroo mince because that’s all there was at the store – bloody awesome! We had it on beans and I did brussel sprouts for myself because the fella doesn’t like em (sacrilege I know!!). Yummers all the way.
I made this sauce last night and we had it over brussel sprouts. I also made some quinoa for the husband so it wouldn’t just be meat & veggies. He loved it and that’s huge cuz he does all the cooking and is super critical of mine. He said it had that more-ish feeling as he went for seconds!! Thanks so much for making me look like a superstar! Oh and I love your blog and your sharp wit. ;)
Hey, had a Catherine sighting. I work near where they live and she still had the ring on. I’m with you, though, thought it was the wrong pick, but who am I to judge. I still can’t figure out why I watch that show and cry like a damn baby at every damn “proposal” show.
