I took that picture with my Mac. NBD. I actually took that for Sergio. Sent him an email so he wouldn’t forget what I looked like. I haven’t heard back from him. He’s obviously disappointed.
So when I asked you all what you wanted me to talk about in my post for today, it was all over the place. From CrossFit, to Thanksgiving food, to my favorite places in Denver. Why the hell wouldn’t you all be thinking the same thing?! Effin A. So I’m just going to write and see what comes out.
But before I forget, I should show you three pictures. From Halloween. I forgot to the other day. The first is Laura and I dressed up. She’s a raver (she even had Altoids as ecstasy. if you don’t think that’s funny, you’re a bore). And I’m a poor constructed Audrey Hepburn. My friend told me that I was too big to play that role. Shucks. The next pictures are from what I ate the next morning to cure my hangover. It included corn tortillas, cheese, eggs, pork sausage, and potatoes. Divine. Like OMG I want to eat this for every meal for the rest of my life. Yeah, I was probably still intoxicated.
This was before. That gorgeous food in all it’s glory. With Laura’s breakfast nachos kicking it in the background.
Ok so let’s start with CrossFit: CrossFit and I have had a tough relationship lately. After running into some injuries, I’ve been annoyed with my crappy workouts and always feeling, well, crappy. So I’ve taken a step back from CrossFit and started to concentrate on some of the things that are more important to me right now…like my cookbook. No, that does not mean I have stopped CrossFitting. I’m still CrossFitting 6 days a week. But instead of doing multiple strength sessions a day and/or multiple workouts in a day, I’m doing one strength and one workout. Getting it all done in an hour. And well, I FEEL so much better. Can’t explain to you how much less my body hurts. And I also PR’d twice in the last two weeks since taking it easy. My body needed a rest and it needed time away to help me remember how much I love CrossFit and need it in my life. So that’s how I feel about CrossFit right now.
In the meantime, I’m getting my cookbook done (which will be released in April-pre0rders in December) and hanging out with friends. Like this weekend. There are birthdays going on all over the place, so my lady friends and I will be spending time grabbing some drinks and gossiping. I like hanging out with ladies from the gym. Especially over cocktails. Should be a blast. That being said, someone asked if I would recommend some spots to go to while visiting Denver. I suck with this, mostly because I don’t go out. And when I do, they’re to quiet bars that I look like an idiot dancing at. Like Stoney’s, that bar is not super busy, but I always have so much fun. Or Irish Rover. Or Pub on Pearl. I have never gone there, but my friends like it. As for downtown, well, I don’t go downtown. Because I don’t get that fancy. I like spandex and boots. That’s all I got to work with.
As for food in Denver, I only frequent a couple places. Devil’s Food. Finely’s Pub. Park Burger. Wild Eggs (for hungover food). Snooze (for super naughty food). And then mmm…Coffee and Sugar Bake Shop for almond milk chai’s and paleo muffins/treats.
Now let’s talk about Thanksgiving food. Don’t you worry your cute little faces off, I will be posting Thanksgiving recipes STARTING NEXT WEEK!! Yes, that’s right. Thanksgiving food which will include side dishes, desserts, snacks, and even a couple entrees. I will not be cooking a turkey. Because that’s probably my least favorite part of Thanksgiving. But I will be playing dress up with some meat. That sounded dirty. But you know what I mean. No? I’ll be making some kind of cool entree with meats. I’ll give you some ideas of what’s to come. Pecans. Cranberries. Meat. Walnuts. Apples. Sausage. Sweet Potatoes. Cauliflower. Ok, I’m bored. Don’t worry though, I got you. Now I just need to figure out what the hell I’m going to do with all this food. I need Sergio back here.
Now let’s talk about stuff I dislike and love right now. Because I want to.
LOVE:
- Plantain Chips. Yes, still.
- My stolen car being found. I really love that a lot.
- Sheaberry solid lotion bars. That sh*t is cool. And smells like heaven. And doesn’t leave a greasy residue. Boom.
- My donut pan. I made apple fritters in that donut pan of mine. Which will be your recipe on Monday. And can be your Thanksgiving breakfast. Double boom.
- Kombucha. Nuff said.
- Scarves. I can’t seem to ever have enough.
- Sock buns. Don’t know what that is? Google it ya dummy.
- Not having coffee. Well, I don’t love it, but I don’t really mind it. I didn’t have coffee for 30 days and it didn’t bother me. I gave it up to see if it would help with my acne. Which I’m not totally sure if it made a difference or not. Either way, I still had tea, which had caffeine in it, but not having coffee was fine. That being said, I’m getting a latte today. I’m just feeling it.
- My acne getting slowly and slowly better. I don’t think many people notice it, but I can TOTALLY tell the difference and it’s making me really happy. I’ve been doing the Oil Cleansing Method with a mixture of castor and grapeseed oil to wash my face, and coconut oil to moisturize my face, and it’s been amazing. I also cut out nuts completely and most sweets. I like to mess around with different chocolates. Getting my thrills where I can. Either way, I’m only wearing bronzer today, no concealer. That’s HUGE.
DISLIKE:
- Hyperextending my elbow during a 5 rep max overhead squat. If you’re not sure what that feels like, it ain’t good.
- The thought of dating. I was all gun hoe (is that how you spell that? is that even a real word or did I just talk about guns and hoes like a rap song?) Either way, I’m over it. Men are about as reliable as my car is right now. And I don’t have a car so…..you get what I’m throwin’ down?
- Ok, I don’t really hate that much.
What are you loving right now?

I’m loving PR’s, pumpkins, us wellness meats, 5am classes (that ones a stretch) and songs by PSY, that make other adults stare disapprovingly at me.
My breakfast which includes leftover chicken enchilada stew (thanks to you), scrambled eggs and avocado… delish. Your recipes rock.
yummm!!! the other morning, I mixed leftover chicken tortilla soup, bacon and eggs. awesome!!
‘Gung ho’ – Extremely enthusiastic and dedicated. (But I think you should trademark ‘gun hoe’.)
Dating and boys are overrated. I’m 32 years old and have been married 12 years and have 3 little devil spawns…I mean daughters. (Yep, that’s what happens when you get knocked up in college.) After that many years, you look back and realize how nice it was to not have someone else around 24/7. The grass is always greener, I guess. :-)
Things I love at the moment?
-The Whole Life Challenge. What is the Whole Life Challenge, you ask? Its where your whole life sucks for 8 weeks. :-) I think the people who are running it actually just copied the people who created Whole30 and made it 4 weeks longer. Either way, I’m down to the final week and I must say that I feel pretty amazing. (Haven’t cheated, minus a few pumpkin spice lattes. Damn you to hell, Starbucks!)
-Hot yoga. Seriously – can you think of anything more enjoyable than sweating your a** off for 75 minutes in 105 degrees? I think not.
-No-bake Paleo brownie bites. Sooooo delicious. I should send you the recipe so you can add a paleomg twist and probably make them 10x more delicious.
yes you should, you absolutely should.
I’m loving your posts. Thanks for being open and honest about your life. It’s refreshing. Oh and the fact that you’re making a cookbook is probably my biggest love (second to New Girl on Tuesday nights).
Glad to hear the oil cleansing method is working for you. I’ve been thinking about trying it but have been scared to do so because slathering oil on your face seems so counter-intuitive. I’ll have to give it a shot though!
Loving- all your posts and hilarious comments, I truly believe you read my mind!! I feel the same way about boys…. Either they are looking for what I call the: bigger better deal and they are one date mover-on-ers or they are strange and are clearly stage 5 clingers and YOU don’t want them around. My personal suggestion Juli….. SERGIO…. duh!! Or maybe a guy with tattoos…. You already know he’s committed to something that’s lifelong!!
Love-my 30 day Crossfit Facebook blog for all my friends. They are very interested in my workout challenge so I am willingly sharing my WOD’s and meals.
Btw, I totally tagged you on twitter to Kelly Bennsimon from Real Housewives of New York who was looking for a healthy pumpkin bread recipe. Think you should add her and send her a copy of your cookbook… Just sayin!!!
Love LULULEMON…. duh!! Need I say more??
Love you for suggesting oil cleansing…. It’s working, my hormones aren’t helping but it’s working!
I have been using coconut oil to moisturize for about a year now and it is amazing! The reason most people get oily skin is that it is actually starts dry and your body over compensates producing too much oil. All that dry dead skin + excess oil = breakout!
I also use home made soaps from rendered animal fat (my brother hunts). Leaves my skin baby soft!
oil cleansing method changed my LIFE! I cleanse with mineral oil, and wipe on some bha at night at some aha in the morning. it’s sooo simple and sooo amazing.
I’m loving your effing blog right, and the majority of the time. We’ve been doing the same oil cleanser protocol as you as well as limiting nuts and sweets and it’s been great.
We NEED to get a donut pan.
-Much love <3
Love: The giant bowl of chicken, chorizo, and sweet potatoes I have in front of me. Eating the shit out of it.
Hate: Not eating chocolate for 5 weeks because of my nutrition challenge. It’s crazy hard, no matter what Dallas and Melissa say. It’s hard.
I really have to try that Kombucha sh*t! I think I am the only person in the paleosphere that has not tried it. So lame… :P
I have to admit, I LOVE paleomg…recipes and commentary are fantastic. And, I’m usually a positive thinker but today I am downright bummed. Just finished my first WHOLE30 and even though I feel great and went down a couple pants sizes, I only lost 4 pounds. I know, it’s not the weight that counts, focus on how good you feel, blah blah blah. Got it. But feeling disappointed in the moment. Oi vey. Thanks for listening. Motivation invited!!!
I know it’s hard, but stay the hell away from that scale. i always get INSTANTLY depressed when i step on the scale, so, i never do. i want my happiness to be based off of how i feel each day and the confidence i build within the gym and how well i treat my body. dont fret about the weight. stick with eating healthy and doing your best to improve yourself daily. that’s all that matters in the end.
First, I LOVE your posts and if you aren’t dating all the time there is something WRONG with the guys in Denver…now…I love your recipes…they help keep me focused and eating right…I love the fall season and PUMPKIN in everything. I am getting to check something off my Bucket List and go to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Crossfit competition training, the halloween almond butter cups recipe my roommate and I crushed for two days, monster pots of paleo chili, power cleans and most importantly your random rants enhancing my mornings in the office.
I have a deload week next week, I can definitely +1 the idea of taking a break and letting your body catch up. Need it badly
Sweatpants, Crossfit competition this weekend, and always some good music
“Gun hoe” – s#!ts getting wild up in here
LOL..thank you so much for your posts…believe it or not they inspire me to get up and get to the gym….and they make me laugh my ass off…..thanks!!!!!!
Right now I’m loving :
- blogs like paleomg, against all grain and urban poser. Your posts always make me smile.
- bacon (obviously too much) and chocolate….sometimes even together
- dried mangoes from nuts.com
- the thai soup I made yesterday in which I put finely chopped napa cabbage instead of the usual rice noodles
i loooooove those blogs!
Coconut Oil will work wonders on your skin…. AND your hair! After a shower or after I shave my legs in the shower, I usually rub coconut oil all over my skin. It makes my skin smooth and moisturized. I’ve heard it may have some healing effects on scars as well.
I also do 2-4 coconut oil treatments on my hair a month. When my hair is dry, I simply dowse my hair in the oil and clip it up for 20-30 mins. Then I’ll jump in the shower and wash it out. It usually takes 2 shampoos to get all the oil out. This treatment is great for healing your hair, especially your split ends. It will help make your hair silky and shiny (in a good way).
I recommend trying both!!!
ALSO….
You should do a post about paleo esq foods one could eat when one does not have electricity…. I live in Arlington, VA right outside of DC… which was hit by the hurricane. I found myself puzzled as to what would be paleo and filling to eat when one can’t cook with electronics such as an electric stove, microwave, refridgerated food, etc. Just a suggestion :)
I like the idea. i’ll do my best!
An outdoor grill comes in handy in times like that.
You’re looking awesomely lean! (Gung Ho). Can’t wait for fritters! That’s all, thanks.
Oh, I’m very happy for your acne improvements. I know how depressed it makes me when it resurfaces…like it is right now, thanks to the soy in salad dressing at a restaurant. Eating out makes me sad.
Thanksgiving is my favoritest holiday. I can’t wait for your recipes! And my birthday is two days later, and I’m already planning on making your sticky chocolate cups. Can’t. Wait.
The aspirin mask really worked for me for acne. YouTube it but I just take 3 non coated aspirin (targets up&up brand), put in a small dish and dab tiny bit of water on to mash them. Then add a teaspoon of honey and mix with your finger to make a paste. Slather all over your face and leave on for 20min. Make sure to use a good moisturizer after! Do this 2-3 times a week and your skin will be baby soft and clear! Aspirin is a natural exfoliant ::))
I’m married (5 years now), and I was married for 3 years, about a million years ago. In between (16yr gap), I dated. At first, I was following my mother’s mission statement: find a man to look after you and your daughter. Yeah… NO! Then I tried to find a partner… again, not working for me. Spent a lot of years not dating and alone, raising my daughter and being pretty happy overall. Then my daughter didn’t really want to hang out with mom, and I figured I’d better get some adult friends… since she was my world. So I joined an inline-skating club, got into competing and more into fitness, and made lots of friends (I’m assuming that’s where you are).
Then I thought I’d give the dating thing another go. But this time, I was just going to meet new people… no need for a boyfriend: I already had a nice group of people to hang with. I met a lot of great people… some of which I’m still friends with, others were just people you meet and don’t click with. And somewhere in there, I met my hubby. I think, all I needed was a change of perspective.
I’ve met an awful lot of people who already have a circle of friends, who flat-out say they don’t want anymore friends. I think this kind of attitude sucks… ’cause there are times in your life when the friends you have disappear (saw it happen when my best friend was dying of cancer – everyone she used to count on shut her out…some people just can’t be around sick people – very sad – she still had me though, and her family).
So don’t stop dating. Just call it something else that sits better with you. Put different parameters around it. Refine your expectations! Find the enjoyment in meeting new people. It can be a lot of fun! :)
In-line skating clubs exist??? my mind just got blown.
Yup. There are inline skating clubs all over North America.
This is from this year’s race in NYC : http://www.skatemarathon.org/Skate_Marathon/2012_Event_info.html
But I live in Canada… we have lots of races here too. Most are run in conjunction with running races.
Things I’m lovin’? Doing my first WOD in over a month with Psy playing in the background, having my youngest son FINALLY start eating paleo without more than one complaint per meal, and noshing on a bowl of green curry soup for breakfast.
Today I LOVE that I’m struggling to figure out how to answer the “I am a ______” (Powerlifter? Crossfitter? Athlete?) question I’ll be asked in an video interview next week. After so much success with Paleo (no more migraines! 100# lost! OMGmuscle!) I’m being highlighted as a “Champion of Health” in my employer’s health insurance/HR brochures/website/stuff. Mind? BLOWN!
That’s freaking awesome!! Congrats!
LOOOOVING (X3)
- my job that allows me to wear yoga pants to work
-finding my lost heart rate monitor so I can finally check out my through the roof efforts during WODs
-rest days (most love concentrated here)
I am also very happy about your skin improvements. I cannot wait for the day when i don’t have to wear foundation and concealer….jealous!
You’re not too big to be Audrey Hepburn! But your eyebrows ARE too small: you need to pencil that sh*t in.
I dont love you
Juli, you emulate, a modern, beautiful, and fit Audrey Hepburn.
And… you can do whatever you want with your eyebrows. They are YOUR eyebrows. Do whatever makes you happy :)
bahahahahhah that made me laugh out loud after a 21 hour trip of 4 flights… <— that's the kind of stuff I love
and my new headbands.
Love List –
Dead Lift PRs (up to 125# after 3 months of CF)
Hubby winning a one-year free membership at my box!
Buying and wearing a size smaller in pants this week
Getting my kids to eat squash pancakes with zero complaints
Amazon Prime for free 2-day shipping of my fav paleo ingredients
The temps finally staying below 70 during the day (I’m in Atlanta, and Juli, you should move here to date my Paleo/kick boxing/yoga loving single brother!!!!)
LOVING: the idea of making these as soon as possible: Halloween Sticky Chocolate Cups
Love:
-Today is day 2 of the 21 day sugar detox.
-Avocados. Holy hell I can’t get enough!
-Mustard.
Hate:
-How much almond butter I’ve been eating lately.
cool to know that oil cleansing is working for your acne! i have very acne prone skin too, and right now i use a whole slew of topical prescription stuff that keeps me (almost) clear and i really want to stop using it b/c im sure its not the most healthy stuff to slather on repeatedly, but im scared my acne will come back! i know everyone says its great and whatnot but im not sure if it can work for acne prone skin / oily skin – but since you are seeing positive results, this may change my mind! :)
I LOVE SOCK BUNS TOO!!
My best friend and I are all about those giant donut buns. No joke, one time at airport security they had to pat her sock bun down.
We never get sick of saying: “is that a sock in your bun or are you just happy to see me?”
First time reading your blog! OMG! You crack me up! I needed that! I will continue to follow your post! Thank you!
Sock bun! I love it, and need to learn how to do it. That’s my new goal in life. haha
Love
PR’d in back squat, bench, strict press, and dead lift this week. Finally broke into the 200s on DL – yes I’m a weakling.
Its my day off so I’m baking a cake for my best friend’s birthday. No its not even close to paleo.
Hate
That I am going to eat too much of that cake and drink a lot tonight and then try to make it to a 9am WOD tomorrow.
Just curious, what sort of skin issues do you have, what’s your skin type? I have been facing the most horrible breakouts lately, and have no idea why? My skin is combination and I can’t get the dry area’s moisturized enough in this dry CO climate.
I love your costumes! When you said you were gonna be audrey hepburn i was dubious but you pulled it off so well and i LOVE that outfit!
You made a great Audrey Hepburn! Love that dress too.
I also love your recipes (at least the ones I’ve tried). They keep my tummy happy.
I love your sense of humor and how it makes me laugh when I read your blog in the morning. Thanks for that!
I love that I finally committed to going to hot yoga on my off days from CrossFit. I think it’s helping with the nagging wrist strain that I can’t seem to shake.
I love that I got through last night’s WOD in less time than I thought I would. So satisfying!
Right now I am loving:
1. Finding out who I am
2. Exploring & setting new goals
3. The confidence I am starting to get through crossfit
4. being single ;)
5. Kendrick Farris “Bless the Gym Tour” (he’s coming to by box tomorrow!)
Right now I am loving:
1. Finding out who I am
2. Exploring & setting new goals
3. The confidence I am starting to get through crossfit
4. Kendrick Farris “Bless the Gym Tour” seminar!
I am loving your blog at the moment more than anything. I am also loving that 3 of my fav Paleo blog posters are women (strong, beautiful…and fierce in the kitchen), in you, Nom Nom, and The Clothes Make the girl). You gals are providing me humor, and good role models to follow. I am also loving that 2 weeks into eating Paleo (minus a slip up last week at In and out..but COME ON IT WAS IN AND OUT! :D)..i feel stronger, more energy and happy. I’ve cooked up 4 of your recipes so far and love how easy they are for a non cook like me! Lastly..I am loving that I got my first RXd WOD last night!!! It wasn’t doing lifting, but more body weight intense. I even did an extra 25 burpees (cause I suck at counting ;) Thanks for all your humor and yummy recipes. keep them coming!
I’m really stoked on:
- your pumpkin waffles that you posted on halloween last year! I made them as pancakes and they managed to keep me full for 5 hours which is unheard of
- using rosewater as a toner for my face. I also do the oil cleansing method and coconut oil as a moisturizer so this was a nice addition!
- 1/2 hr of yoga every morning. I use myyogaonline.com, it’s like netflix but with yoga
- meeting with my trainer on monday to get a new program!
I can’t wait for your cookbook to come out!
the mindy project. that’s what i love right now. i watched the halloween episode twice now and laugh at the same parts. too effing funny!
of course, your blog. you crack me up too.
:)
The best move I EVER made in my Crossfit life, was decreasing the number of WOD’s I did. I currently have a one on, three off rotation. Yes, only twice a week. Every once in a while I’ll double up one of my days. I’ve seen more PR’s since doing that, than the previous 4 years I was doing Crossfit. It’s not for everyone. But your body certainly does need rest more than anything else.
I very much DISLIKE politcal adds. Is it Nov 7th yet!?
AGREED!!! damn political ads. dear lord.
I’m loving that it’s Friday, that my backyard chickens are laying delicious eggs, that I love your blog and think you’re awesome. Also I’m going to try the oil cleansing method too cuz just it plain sucks being 31 years old and having acne.
Can’t wait for your cookout and have a great weekend!
Things I love:
Your blog, recipes all around hilariousness (think I made a word)
Target- I mean really can you think of a better store?
The fact that ur cookbook comes soon! Can’t wait
Get to see my family and friends this weekend boom
Things I hate:
Bread and my addiction to it. I eat paleo about 4 days a week now and I am having trouble just completely saying sianara to it. Ate bread last night though, thought my stomach was exploding in my body
Can’t get motivated to work out. Tried crossfit and loved but its too expensive. Got any other suggestions?
Dating is lame. Period.
have you tried the wodgenius app? if you have an iphone, it will help you come up with workouts you can do at home!
Thank you! I will give it a try :-) and thank you so much for responding to me!
Ok you are beyond hilariously funny (Sounds weird, but whatever). The first thing I do every morning is go to PaleOMG and read your posting.
Hmm..things I love currently are avocados, eggs, my crockpot and sumo squats (I know random, but Ive been feeling it lately).
Im so looking forward to your cookbook! Oh and dating is so overrated! lol…
Things I’m loving lately:
-the cooler weather (i love breaking out boots/scarves)
-lululemon define jacket (i just bought one in every color I could get my hands on)
-crossfit (i’ve been doing it for 2 mos and am seriously addicted)
-my new keurig!
Things I love:
*My work “hubby” who brings me an Americano and froths my coconut milk for me @ work. Nice guy!!!
*Finally finding some way to eat (Paleo) that makes my stomach hurt less.
*Fall is here!!!
*Reading awesome Paleo blogs at my boring job. :-)
Things I hate:
*Hiatal Hernias
Love:
**Anything pumpkin or squash related
**Completing my 2nd CF competition ever in the Monster division (or RX) and coming in last knowing that 1 yr ago and couldn’t have done ANY of the WOD’s.
**your honesty
Hate:
**that I’ve slacked on breakfast for a month, just sets me up for failure the rest of the day
**how short daylight is
**this nagging shoulder pain. I know what it means, I need a break, but scared to b/c I don’t want to lose what I’ve gained.
Your paragraph on Crossfit made me think of this post on Mark’s Daily Apple. Sometimes, less is more:
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/overtraining/#axzz2B5CeWycM
so ive been creepily stalking your blog for a couple of weeks now, and i feel like its time to comment..
you are effin hilarious. and all of your recipes make me drool. which is a little awkward, cause most of the time im looking at them at work.
im just transitioning into a more paleo-esque style of eating and i feel SO MUCH BETTER. thanks for making it that much easier to find awesome recipes that fit my lifestyle, and for making me laugh at the same time!
hope you like the recipes you try!!
I’m loving being in Denver for a girls getaway weekend. Thanks so much for the suggestions!! Her flight gets in shortly so I think I’ll drag her over to Mmm Coffee for lunch. Yay Paleo treats!!!!
Love reading your blog posts! Let’s see things I’m loving right now:
1 – It’s my birthday month (14 days to go!)
2 – I’m more and more dedicated to my blog and love seeing it grow.
3 – Going to be making your 5 ingredient breakfast stuffed acorn squash for dinner tonight…. yes dinner because who says you can’t have breakfast for dinner! So I’m super excited about that.
Ooohhh forgot to say I’m LOVING kombucha right now but my wallet is not… time to make some of my own me thinks!
I am LOVING your sock bun!!! Have been wanting to try it out, but since I’m pretty dumb when it comes to hair and making it cute and being girly, I have been too scurred. But I will def try it now!!! :)
do it!!!! it was WAY easier than i thought it would be. got it perfect on the first try. and it’s great to do with messy hair!
I am loving…
-The same bomb sock bun! Rock it gurl, rock it hard.
-Smashing my PRs
-That your cookbook is coming along…i.can.not.wait!
Do you have a clarisonic?? I use mine everyday, and it makes my face feel ah-mazing! I don’t really have any problems with acne, but I have heard that it really helps with it. They are definitely pricey ($120) but well worth it!!
I love that I am in the last two weeks of a 9 week paleo challenge (of which your website has saved my ass or this challenge would have been over weeks ago). I love that I feel like I can predominantly live paleo after doing this challenge. What was a pain in the ass 7 weeks ago is now pretty routine and simple. I love the way you go about your food life or what I perceive your food life to be; meaning – sometimes hangover food is a necessity, and sometimes a pumpkin spice latte is a necessity (that’s right! I am secure in my masculinity, I love a pumpkin spice latte and any guy who says they don’t is a terrorist). So after reading your blogs and cooking a hell of a lot of your recipes I am thinking that I will love being 100% paleo…90% of the time. Thanks for making me laugh…I may buy your cookbook to support your endeavor but I will probably just come back to the site…it will just be more funny that way.
I tried making plantain chips the other day using coconut oil and they didn’t come out so good…Burnt on one side and super soft. Do you have a recipe that you can share? You keep talking about them and they sound delicious!
i just buy mine at whole foods. baking them in a good way though!
What I’m loving…
1. The Whole Life Challenge – it has kept me motivated for the last 7 weeks (ends Nov. 10th) after doing the Whole30 first.
2. Losing 25 lbs since mid-August doing the Whole30 and WLC.
3. My clothes fitting better as a result of said weight loss and inches lost.
4. Your Again Faster blog post today!
5. My globo-gym (Lifetime Fitness). Sure I miss my box, but I am finding other ways to stay in shape like joining a training group for improving my running, yoga classes and still being able to do WODs and making the dudes look silly as they do their bi’s/back/tri’s and snickering at their skinny legs.
Any suggestions on the best places to shop for killer leggings and dresses for our crossfit legs?
Loving:
coconut oil
sweet potatos
skinny jeans
danceation
Whole 30′ing
Your skin is looking fantastic!!
I really appreciate your unfront honesty. You’re a real person, like the rest of us, and not pretending to be something you’re not. We all think the things you say, you just say them. It’s so refreshing!!!
Loving that it’s Friday. That it’s spandex/Uggs weather. That today’s WOD is split jerks! That I’m on day 16 of a Whole30…I want all of the bad things. Starting to dream about cheat food, no joke.
Great post, as usual. You look beautiful (and so does your skin)!
Hi Juli,
Your skin (and hair) both look great! I too am dealing with adult acne; question about the oil pulling…is that all you are doing to wash your face? Do you do it daily? To moisturize with coco oil, are you applying it in it’s hardened form or melting it first?
Thank you!! Can’t wait for your Thanksgiving paleo recipes.
I’m not sure what oil pulling is…is that the same as oil cleansing? that is all i wash my face with and i do it just at night. and i apply the coconut oil that is hardened or melted, whatever it is in my house lol. right now, since it’s cold, it’s hardened but it melts instantly on your face and in your hands! i apply a ton of coconut oil at night and just a little in the morning for my moisturizer.
Oops…I meant oil cleansing! Okay great, thank you!! I was nervous to try it when I heard it a while back, but glad it’s working for you so will totally try it!
Oil pulling is essentially just swishing coconut oil around in your mouth for 20-30 mins, either every day or multiple times a week. It’s purpose is dental health and supposedly it “pulls” toxins out of your body and into the oil via your gums. I dunno if I believe that second part, but it makes your teeth and gums look healthy as crap!
Ah, okay, I knew I’d heard of the oil pulling before. Thanks. 30 min is a long time to swish!!
I frequent the same places! That’s a little weird. Also, your sock bun looks perfect. I love that you post places in Denver that have paleo stuff and almond milk chais. I really really love that.
You look like a jersey desperate housewife.. Its so great! I admit that it is one of my favorite TV shows.. I’m so bad. he he ; )
Have you ever looked into oil pulling? It’s supposed to help with acne as well as many other things. I just started and think my face is clearer. You can use coconut oil. Anyway, google it if you want.
Love: circus, especially silks; paleo; chocolate! I wish the circus/crossfit worlds overlapped more. I can’t wait till I figure out how to do both without getting tendonitis. I love your blog by the way. I read it everyday!
Love:
- My new hairstyle, semi-soon (6 months from now, post-Navy) to be less faux-hawk and more modern mohawk looking
- Cinnamon. Goes on everything, does great things for insulin sensitivity.
- Being single… certain aspects of it.
- Wreck-It Ralph. I’m a geek and this movie was awesome.
“I like spandex and boots. That’s all I got to work with.” My god I wish I could find a woman with that much to work with!
So thin! What happened to that bad ass physique from the paddle board picture? Still a looker but I hadn’t realized you got so thin.
ha! not the case at all
I’m loving:
That hubby is asleep and I can enjoy my green tea in partial peace
That I have my hubby reading your recipes and trying them
Coconut everything, ceramic pans, no longer burning my arms on the gas stove, head bands, down blankets and fuzzy socks…
Bacon wrapped everything.
Lovin’ you Juli for your confidence, jokes, hard work, and inspiration… you “gun hoe” girl!
I AM LOVING THAT YOUR COOKBOOK WILL BE READY TO PRE ORDER IN DECEMBER!!!!! (can you tell how excited I am with the ALL CAPS lol…must be good :) love ya Jules!!)
I am totally loving your blog as always! I too am loving plantain chips, and homemade lara bars! I am super stoked about your cookbook coming out and the new recipes you will be posting. We haven’t decided what we are doing for Thanksgiving yet, but I think I will be making your apple fritters and buying a donut pan. As far as your dating…one day u and Serg will realize that you guys are meant to be and…then the happily ever after will come…I mean come on Jules, how come you guys can’t see what we all can! You rock!
Soooooo… baking soda scrub 2 x’s a week I dont care what you wash with but if you are on the oily side, Bioelements beyond hydration (no yucky stuff in it) is awesome and its gel based, controls oil. If not oily, then look for something mild (you have to moisturize) with lactic acid. Like someone said….dry skin can create more sebum (yea I said sebum) in the skin and piss it off. You have health insurance? Find a medical esthetician or rn and get mild chemical peels every few weeks or microdermabrasion. Maybe something I posted can help you?
Juli! I just went to CrossFit Broadway this morning! It was fantastic! Definitely feeling the change in elevation! (I live 300′ above sea level) I’m in Boulder for the week, but I’ll be back next Saturday.
Btw I made the pumpkin coconut curry…amazing!!
were you at the 9am class?? i was at the 10am, but looked like a run down homeless person, without make up. maybe i’ll see you next saturday!
yeah, I was there at 9 am. I’m sure if you talk to the trainer, you’ll hear all about how I gushed about you! Maybe I’ll see you next week!
well when i was there at 10am, i saw 2 girls that i didn’t know, so that makes sense!! hope you had fun!
ha yeah I was the tall one that looked like I just got my butt kicked! The altitude was insane. My friend and I were talking about how great of a trainer he was!
just wanted to say thank you for the oil cleansing introduction. i started it after reading about it on a couple other blogs as well and it’s been working wonders. i’m always impressed by how my skin feels afterwards and that – yes – some days i can go without concealer / foundation!
also – i had been noticing in your pics that your skin looked clearer! happy to hear this confirmation from you :)
I’m with you Juli on the acne problems. My acne is mainly caused by rosacea. I know gluten, hydrogenated oils, and sugar directly effect my skin. Even if I drink half a cup of coffee (which I looooove coffee) my face gets bright red and hot and itchy about an hour or so later. I know it correlates to the acidity in food and balancing the ph in my body. Like drinking lots of water, not eating gluten or fried foods, and cutting out sugar. Sound familiar? Eating primally has made my rosacea so much more manageable. Now i just drink warm (not scalding hot) green tea instead of coffee. Ohwell…
Right now I love that I am getting an extra hour of sleep the night before running a half marathon!
What am I loving right now? I’m loving your blogs and recipes for sure. Not to blow smoke up your spandex but you’re a huge reason why I’m doing so well in this challenge right now. I’m loving fall (when we get some in CA)
Coconut Oil

Random acts of kindness
OMG….my 21 year old daughter, which of course means I could be your really cool AUNT, just started doing the oil cleansing!! Found it on Pinterest (aka: Time Sucker), I thought she was nuts! She thinks it’s working too….awesome!
I’ll be in Boulder/Denver twice this month, if I’m near Broadway I’ll drop in.
I wish I lived in CO, I would date the shit out of you the marry your ass real good! hahaha
Your blog is awesome! Thanks for taking the time to see that I eat better than most people.
Sean
looking forward to recipe tomorrow….also seeking opportunity to use the phrase ‘gun hoe’ ASAP!
I absolutely love your blog!! I went out and bought a crockpot from goodwill this morning and am currently crockpotting up the chicken curry recipe… can’t wait for dinner!
And I feel ya with the dating. I just had my heart broken a few months ago, and now it just feels like too much work. But I will second what someone else said: You are gorgeous, strong, have an awesome personality, and you can cook like it’s nobody’s business. The guys in denver must be crazy!
Tomorrow I start OnRamp at Enumclaw Crossfit… because you inspired me. I am now a little freaked out about it because it occurred to me that it’s going to be really hard! I fell off the paleo and exercise wagon a while back and feel like garbage. I hope tomorrow is a success and I remember that taking care of my body matters a bunch. I treat my body like I treat my car…. I get in and drive the heck out of it. Don’t change the oil, don’t check the water, put cheap gas in it and fill it with clutter. You get the picture. I think I ought to think of it as a really expensive, fancy car, like the ones you park way out in the parking lot and take up two spaces so no one can park too close. Sorry for rambling, I got a little carried away… I just wanted to share :) Wish me luck!
I am loving your posts, because you are human and express i (no, i’m not a stalker…well, ok, maybe, but not in a bad way); I love cooking, spending time with my fam; and I am loving chilling in my house (after being on the road for the last six weeks). Great thing about traveling is hitting up different boxes and learning new things. But it’s always good to come home, be in my kitchen, kick it with my grandbaby, and do my thang.
Gung Ho, LOL, but gun hoe is amazeballs.
In addition to kick ass recipes I hope you understand how inspiring you are as well. Feeling so down and out on my workouts lately and you’re 100% right! Taking a step back and realizing its not because you’re weak but because its whats best has completely shifted my mood. Thank you for your rambles and random thoughts and cant wait for the cookbook.
Just found your blog…was looking for a paleo meatloaf recipe…and love it. I also love that you talked about acne. I’ve been dealing with a little since I stopped BC and it’s driving me crazy! I hadn’t thought coffee played into it. Thanks for the tip.
Very wonderful blogs. Lookin for inspiration in all sorts of places being new to crossfit and paleo. This one is def a winner.
Loving: This blog/the weather FINALLY cooling down in CA/kombucha (especially the trilogy)/looking up paleo and finding amazing food!
Hating: Sugar (because its so delicious)/injuries from crossfit/that damn scale (but I will win).
So…. I think you’re my new hero? Slash dream best friend.
I totally feel you on being the only one noticing acne slowly but surely get better, and rockin’ it without concealer is HUGE! Mad props girl.
And boys are bunk. Dating is even more bunk. Eff-it. Enjoy your lady friends, endorphin highs, good wine, and great food. What more do you need!?!
I’m slowly but surely entering the world of Paleo… and you’re managing to make me feel really okay about that. Which is awesome, because I need to feel more than okay physically, and I think this is how that happens…
I wanted to share something I LOVE these days: LUSH Cosmetics. They revolutionized my complexion and opinions about makeup/exfoliants/lotions/everything. I highly recommend them for troubled/acne prone skin (and everything else…), especially their facemask “Cosmetic Warrior” and their bathbomb “Twilight”. Smear on the facemark, draw a hot foamy bath, poor some wine, and BAM! Those are my secrets to a happy spinster life ;)
Keep on doing what you’re doing! I’m eternally grateful :)
I’m loving bacon, paleo, my fitness progress, holiday-time-coming-soon, and this blog (seriously, i was just introduced recently and I’m obsessed)! I started eating paleo about a month ago and it’s fantastic. Your recipes have helped a lot. And I love your humor.
I’m loving:
(but not necessarily being able to afford) Anthropologie
Miss Manners (who knew she was so funny?)
Pilates Aligned (Golden Triangle neighborhood of Denver)
Halloween Candy (but it is not loving me)
My kooky doctor who is helping me overcome adrenal fatigue
Voting in Colorado (Way better electoral process than the last state I lived in…)
Fall weather
Anticipation of Thanksgiving with my family
Oh and Juli I tried mmm… Coffee! today as I was in that neighborhood for a doctor appt. I don’t drink coffee, but I got a caffeine-free tea and some baked goods. Awesome!
I am Loving:
pumpkin everything. cinnamon with peverything. Spin class. Hot Yoga. Your blog. Audrey Hepburn. Cary Grant. Humphry Bogart. Ingrid Bergman. “Here’s to you, kid” Your recipes. Your cookbook (well, I’ll be loving that soon enough!). Your humor. BTW, You make a great Hepburn. I guessed it when I saw the pic on Instagram/Twitter/FB – wherever I saw it. I need to try the sock bun thing.
I LOVE coffee and can’t seem to break the habit.
loving: spinning to awesome beats, riding my bike outside, sunshine (i’m in Australia), smoked salmon.
oh yes, and avocados. Can’t imagine life without them…
babygirl, talk to me about nuts causing acne. I am like a prepubescent teenage boy / putting on all my winter weight via nuts. Are they correlating? halp!
I’m loving your blog right now! I can’t remember how I came across it, I think thru a friend. AWESOME. I’ve loved everything I’ve made AND I even enjoy reading your whole blog posts, not just your recipes, which is really saying something. I can totally relate to your single life, CrossFitting and your humor. Hilarious! How can I go back and read past blogs (perhaps in order, cuz I’m weird like that)? Thanks for doing what you do!!
Lovin’ your blog …makes me laugh .. 5:30am Crossfit !! .. Paleo … lululemon (unfortunately !)… Your recipes… Red wine (unfortunately :) and coffee !
Hate the fact that I just found this blog/site, LOVE reading about you and these make me feel so bad recipes. Give me a reason to relocate to CO. HATE that Crossfit is most likely not an option for me with 2 spine fusions (cervical/lumbar) due to my line of work (Firefighter). Thanks for the blog!! Acne? What Acne?
hahaha make up is pretty amazing stuff!
Yeah had to use some on my head for my sisters wedding!!
What brand of plantain chips to you buy? or do you make them yourself? I am obsessed with plantains..like really obsessed. Please let me know! Thanks!
whole foods or sprouts OR make them :)
Dislike – not a steady enough stream of rando rants.
Likes – bodyweight training, mobility training, FOOD!!
I struggle with acne too. I discovered the oil cleansing method just over a year ago. I LOVE IT! It’s helped so much! I use a combination of castor oil, EVOO and tea tree oil, then moisturize with a combo of coconut oil, EVOO and vitamin E oil. My face has cleared up completely, and almost all of the scarring has faded away! Woo!
I would LOVEEEEEEEE to see what you can whip up in a Dutch Oven! Please oh Please oh Please oh Please!
