Let’s get one thing straight, right here, right now. I am not a chef. I have no culinary background. And I literally have no idea what I’m doing in the kitchen. I just like trying new things and I’m not scared to f*ck up. Well, that’s a lie, but it sounded brave.

So I was brave this weekend. I marinated these spare ribs for almost 3 days (because my propane ran out and I was too lazy to get a refill) and when I finally had the ability to grill these suckers up, I decided to take a chance. You see, I have never grilled spare ribs before. Only crockpotted (that is a word, don’t question me) them. I knew I was going to be lucky if they turned out how I wanted them to. So I did the smart thing and only grilled up one of the racks of spare ribs. And guess what happened. It didn’t work. I mean, it cooked through and it tasted good, but the meat was tough as balls. Not that appetizing and/or satisfying. So, like any smart person would do, I went back to my comfort zone. Crockpot. God bless that thing. I blame it on how the ribs were cut, but what would I know. I have no butcher experience either. Fail.

This recipe is a little bit like this one. But less intense. The pictures on that recipe are definitely more intense. Meaning gross.

I just started listening to Dance Cardio, Electronic Cardio, and Rap Strength Training stations on Pandora. I effing love it. My CrossFit classes don’t. Sorry classes, you have poor taste. That’s just a fact.

Asian Marinated Crockpot Beef Spare Ribs

Ingredients

Scale
  • 46lbs Grass Fed Beef Short Ribs
  • 1 lime, juiced
  • 3 tablespoons Coconut Aminos
  • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon raw honey
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
  • 1 teaspoon siracha (or other hot sauce)
  • 2 teaspoons sesame seeds
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Place spare ribs in a large baking dish or shallow dish.
  2. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl, other than the ribs.
  3. Pour marinade over the ribs.
  4. Cover and place in fridge to marinate for 8+ hours. I did 2+ days, but that’s because of laziness. You don’t have to be a lazy ass like me. Taste paid off though.
  5. Place ribs in crockpot.
  6. Pour extra marinade on top. You shouldn’t need extra liquid, but if you do, just add a couple tablespoons of water.
  7. Turn crockpot to low and cook for 6-8 hours or until meat is tender and falls off the bone.
  8. OMG eat them.

    This recipe sounds great…

    One thing though. What’s the point of using Raw honey if you’re cooking it in the recipe. AFAIK, the only proven/real benefit of Raw honey is the bioactive compounds that “live” in it (because it’s never been heated). When you cook it, you’re effectively doing the same thing they do with processed honey (except finer straining).

    Just a thought — might not be worth wasting your good honey in ANY recipe that you’re going to cook, as you don’t get to keep the benefits of the “raw”ness.

    I use raw honey in all cold preps (smoothies, salads, dressings, etc) and cheap’o processed honey in anything I’m going to cook.

      Thanks for the tip Kevin!! I only ever have raw honey in my pantry so that’s why I use that, but people can use whatever they want 🙂

        May want to do your research! Most cheap-o processed honey has high fructose corn syrup added to it! Don’t know about you, but I’d rather kill some enzymes in my raw, pure honey than to load myself up with fake-o cheap-o sweeteners! 🙂

          You bring up a good point about the honey. Just like any product, you have to check out the ingredients. I too use regular honey though for cooking and raw for everything else. It is easily half the price I pay for raw and even if it doesn’t have any additional ingredients.
          The one thing I DO sub out is the Sriracha sauce. It used to go on just about everything pre-paleo days until I saw it has a bunch of additives. There are a few good recipes to make a paleo version(nom nom paleo, etc) or if I’m in a pinch, I usually stock Mina Harissa-Spicy which is a paleo friendly Moroccan hot sauce as a quick sub although it doesn’t carry as much heat.

          Great recipe though.. I look forward to making it for the Hubby and I this weekend! =)

        Have made these many times! They are amazing. I marinade for 2 days because I keep forgetting that I have prepared them! Family LOVES them. Your recipes are Go to for me

    I’m not pointing at mistakes, but just so you know for next time, you can cook your ribs in the oven and then finish them on the grill. There are so many muscle fibers in ribs, that they need a slow cook first to break all that tissue down..

      Seconding what Tina said. My parents have always boiled ribs for a bit before they put them on the grill and they always tend to be a lot more tender and fall-off-the-bone-ish.

          Ditto to the two-part cooking method. It’s awesome. However, the ribs are SO tender, after the first round of cooking (crock pot or oven) that you have to make sure to get under them completely when you’re moving them to the grill, and flipping them over. You can’t just grab an end and flip, like you would for chicken or something. If you do that, you’ll suddenly be holding a single bone in your tongs, while the rest of your ribs either fall on the ground, or remain on your grill, getting burned. Not like I’ve ever had that happen to me or anything…

    I know you’re not a huge fan, but do you think this would be good with pork ribs? Also, the rap strength training station on Pandora is amazing.

    I’ve never cooked ribs. Actually pretty much all over cuts of meat besides chicken and ground beef scare me to cook, gotta overcome that because ribs look damn delicious!

    These look yummy, and the fact I can throw them in the crockpot..HUGE plus..as the hubby is the man about the grill….so I rarely touch it 😀

    And awesome mention of the Pandora workout stations. I am always craving that motivating music I get during my WOD (after work), during the day while I am toiling at the computer.
