I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.
Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.
It’s like a fun house up in here.
So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.
Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. I think I’m going to make a dessert for tomorrow’s post. Michelle inspired me. And being that it’s Friday, that means it’s chocolate and wine day.
PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.
Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos
- Yield: 2-4 1x
Ingredients
For the “tortillas”
- 3 eggs, whisked
- ½ cup canned coconut milk
- 2 tablespoonscoconut flour
- pinch of salt
For the shredded pork
- 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- salt, to taste
For the toppings
- 5–6 strips of bacon
- 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
- 2–3 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
- chopped green onions
Instructions
- First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
- Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
- Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
- When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
- Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
- Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
- Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
- Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
- Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
- Happy times.

I know this may sound weird, but Grandma’s Lye Soap worked great for my and my daughters’ acne and eczema. It’s just plain old fashioned soap: lye, lard, and water. I get it at Ace Hardware. Love it!
I’m sure you have heard this before but Loren Cordain wrote a paleo book and looked at diet and its links to Acne.
I just wanted to say thanks for sharing. It can be easy to gloss over things and only present the best of ourselves. My face was crystal clear a few years ago when I was on birth control, but since going off birth control, getting pregnant, etc. it hasn’t quite been the same. Sometimes it’s worse than other times. You aren’t alone, and I hope you find what works for you. 🙂
These were DELICIOUS! I used pork loin instead of short ribs to cut down on fat, and topped mine with chipotle salsa, avocado, and a fried egg. The tortillas took me a try or two to perfect, and they were awesome. I think they would make a great crepe substitute as well–you could stuff with chocolate and strawberries.
I made this for a post-workout brunch on Saturday for my boyfriend and I, and I’m pretty sure we just inhaled them. Thanks so much for the great recipe, Julie!
This recipe looks FAB!! Can’t wait to try it.
I have struggled with acne most of my life, especially cystic acne once I had kids. I tried natural stuff. I tried to go on accutane, but have GI issues, so it was contraindicated. I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!! Mine is hormonal too, on my chin and jawline- let me ask you this: Are you a picker? You know what I mean. I am the QUEEN of picking at my face and every now and then it clears up and I have NOTHING to pick at. So it stays clear for like 2 days. Then I find a pore that must die and pick it…the next day its like Im 16 all over again…
So there ya go. If you find a miracle cure, please share.
THanks for the awesome recipes and continuously fantastic posts!!!
Hey Juli-
Stop stressing about the acne – YOU ARE EFFING GORGEOUS!!!!
One more thing… Have you considered that maybe the makeup you’ve been using to cover up has not been helping? Check out EWG’s SkinDeep and see what is in your makeup that could be making the acne worse.
XO
So, I can’t find boneless short ribs anywhere! Ugh. I did however get a couple lbs of regular short ribs. Do you think this would work in the crock pot and I can just debone them after?
absolutely!!!
Great! Thank you! I was worried!
Minocyclin (sp) cleared me up good pretty good. As did cutting out the dairy. question: what kind of make up do you use? I am a tool w/ makeup and could use some tips!
Juli – I am finally commenting on your blog because you’re speaking about something that I’ve dealt with for more than half my life. I’m 28 (going to be 29 in August) and have had moderate to severe acne since I was 13. Since switching to the paleo lifestyle, my skin has also improved albeit not completely.
I have found that makeup plays a really large role. Once I switched to Laura Mercier and Jane Iredale makeup, my skin had a transformation. I know how frustrating it can be. You might want to see if your makeup contains bismuth as a primary ingredient as this can be an aggravator as well. I’ve also noticed that when I eat more fruit, my skin reacts.
I know that your patience wears thin when you can’t find anything to alleviate the problem. What other products are you using?
Hi, I just discovered your site and am excited to try some of your recipes as I am new to the Paleo diet. As far as acne goes, I too had terrible cystic acne as a teen and took Accutane with great results and the only side effect that I am aware of with me was dry skin. However, later in my 20’s the acne returned and I discovered that I am really sensitive to all fragrances. Once I eliminated fragrance in all personal care products and laundry detergents my acne completely cleared up. Now the only breakouts I get are from when I accidentally touch my skin with something fragranced.
