Juli Bauer: Well hey there, guys. Welcome to the 36th episode of PaleOMG Uncensored. My name is Juli Bauer Roth. I am the creator of www.PaleOMG.com and this podcast, which I never know what I’m doing week to week and just kind of pulling sh*t out of my ass. Not literally, ok. Don’t be gross. But, man. This podcast sometimes hard to come up with content when you’re talking to yourself with your dog on your lap week to week. But I’m doing it. I’m here for you. So you have something to listen to on your Saturday walk, whenever the hell you’re listening to this. Because honestly, when someone doesn’t have a new podcast up, I’m like, “What the f*ck are you doing with your life? Why don’t you have a new episode?” It pisses me off. “Oh, because you have a life? I do too, and I’m waiting for you.” So I don’t want to be that person. So I’m getting this podcast done.
Let’s talk about something that’s really important here. If you don’t watch the Bachelor or the Bachelor franchise, get your life together. Because it’s the f*cking best. It’s the best entertainment out there. And I’ve made it very clear on my website that I love it, and I don’t care what you think of me. I don’t love much reality TV. Just a handful. Kardashians; always. Bachelor; always. Anything that has anything to do with the Food Network; always. Ok, food, in general, always. But that’s about it. I’m not much of a Real Housewives person. Chrisley Knows Best or whatever the f*ck that show is; is literal hell. But Bachelor? Love it.
So, that brings me to our first important topic. Kaitlyn Bristowe; she was a couple of seasons ago, if you don’t watch the Bachelorette. She was a couple of seasons ago, and she was by far the best. She’s so f*cking cool. I don’t know her personally, but she is awesome. She’s just the best. I just love her so much. And she’s coming out with a podcast. I think it’s this Sunday, maybe. Sunday or Monday it releases, and I think it’s called Off the Vine. Because she’s a big wino human. Just loves her wine, so I think that’s why it’s called that. But she’s coming out with a podcast, and I f*cking cannot wait for her podcast. I hope she gives us some details on her season. On what her life is like with Shawn, who she got engaged to on the show. He is so f*cking hot. He looks like Ryan Gosling. And his hair isn’t too tall, but it’s tall enough. So I cannot wait to watch that. Or sorry, not watch. To listen to that. Somebody told me that they haven’t watched my podcast yet. {laughs} This poor person doesn’t know what a podcast is. So anyway. I cannot wait for her podcast to start up. And I’ll be watching my phone for a new episode every week. Like, watching for it to download. I can’t wait. That’s the most exciting thing going on in my life right now.
What else is exciting is this, whatever, 400th season of the Bachelorette has begun. Just this Monday. It released this Monday. Started off. Even though I listen to the Reality Steve podcast, I do not know who wins. And please don’t ruin it for me. I think those people are very f*cked up who are like, out to ruin it. I’m sure I’ll find out listening to Reality Steve, but he doesn’t do much talking about this season. He just interviews people. Anyway.
1. Bachelorette recap [6:54]
So let’s talk about what happened on the Bachelor this past week. So Rachel is the new bachelor. She was on Nick’s seasons last, whatever. It was like 4 weeks ago. Whatever. So she was on Nick’s season. Everybody is making a huge deal about it because she’s the first black woman to be on the show. Or to be the main person on the show. And I don’t know if she wants that. I don’t know if she wants that attention in that way. But, she’s f*cking rocking it. She’s cute as can be. She’s like a lawyer. I don’t know what kind of lawyer, because I don’t know what any kind of lawyers. When people send out what kind of lawyer they are, I’m like, that makes no literal sense to me. I don’t know what you’re saying. But she’s some sort of lawyer. I think on the defense side. She’s super smart. She’s super cute. She laughs a sh*t-ton. She never stops laughing. She thinks everything is funny. Which is good for this show, because you have to have some sort of funny bone to be able to put up with this sort of situation. So she’s awesome. Love her. She’s cute as can be.
The show started off pretty good. Because I looked up these guys. Just so you know, I have a recap on my blog every week that I do on one of the recipes. I do a recap of every episode, and it’s my favorite post of the week, so you totes should go on the blog. It’s just more intense than this actual podcast breakdown. But know I will be talking about the Bachelor. And if you don’t like it, I don’t care.
Ok. So I looked up all the dudes before the episode went live. And I was like; wow. No one is attractive. They make everyone look so unattractive in their photos. They do these up close, kind of; I don’t know. Where the camera is places is not the best angle. So all the dudes looked unattractive. But once they start coming out of the limo, I was pleasantly surprised. They’re all attractive. All attractive pretty much in some way. Pretty much, you have to be somewhat attractive to be on this show. They’re not picking up Joe Schmoe, whoever that may be. That sounds; I sound really bitchy right now. Sorry.
Ok. So all the guys are attractive. The one thing I have to tell you about Rachel; and I pretty much lost all respect for her, is she said she doesn’t like chocolate. And I don’t know what the f*ck that is about. My sister-in-law also doesn’t really like chocolate. Or sweets. My sister-in-law and my husband, and then my brother-in-law; all three of them don’t really like sweets. And then my husband’s mom, my mother-in-law, she loves them. She is my idol because of that. I don’t know how her children don’t like sweets. And I don’t know how I ended up with my husband, if he doesn’t. But anyway. Rachel doesn’t like chocolate. What the f*ck? Come on, Rachel. Don’t be the worst. Whatever.
Ok, so Rachel’s cool. I have nothing bad to say about her. And I wouldn’t, other than she doesn’t like chocolate, and I have no respect for her. But other than that, I totally respect her. Ok, so I want to talk about some of the breakdown of the dudes. And it’s hard to do a huge breakdown after the first episode, but I’m going to do kind of a review of what I talked about on my blog. On my blog, though, I have a link that you can look at all the dudes. It just goes to ABC.com. and it has a picture of all the dudes. So you can follow along, if you forget. Because how do you remember all these names?
So Peter was the first one out of the limo, and I’m sure pretty much everyone loves him. Because he has dark features, he has light eyes. He has a space between his teeth that is surprisingly attractive, because I’m not interested in that. I’m interested in braces sealing that up. I worked f*cking hard, braces and Invisalign to make sure my holes were sealed, if you will. But Peter is really cute. He’s chill. He’s like, “Oh yeah, I’ll talk to you inside. I’m very mysterious.” Like him. He got my first impression rose.
Pretty much all these dudes, they’re all sporting that very popular haircut that all dudes are into right now. Where you have that sharp line; like a sharp side-part line down the middle. And then you have this combover. I don’t know; they must hairspray. They must tease. Because I don’t know how dudes get that sort of height unless you have crazy thick hair. But every sort of dude has this. I looked up whatever this haircut is called, and I was on a very sketchy site, so I don’t know if any of this is true. But someone called it; some site called it a pompadour. I think; yeah. Pompadour. And all these dudes have this haircut. It’s very popular right now. But it’s like, when a guy has that haircut, I don’t f*cking trust him. I just don’t. I have a friend who has that haircut. He’s very attractive. I don’t trust him. I wouldn’t date him. I wouldn’t marry him. Wish I could say his name. But he knows who he is. But all these dudes like this haircut.
So, Alex. He was the one with the first pompadour that made an impression. I don’t remember anything about him other than his hair was very tall. Brady; Brady is another pompadour. But Brady looks like a female. Not a female. Ok. He looks like a very well-kept male. Meaning, he’s plucked all his eyebrows out. I don’t know if that’s true. But he looks like the Ken-doll guy on Botched, if any of you guys watch Botched. Ok, I guess I should add Botched to my reality TV list. I guess I just really like reality TV. I was lying to myself. So he looks like the human Ken doll. You guys should look him up. Don’t worry, I have a link on my website. Duh.
Bryan, with a “Y”. I hate that spelling. Because my husband’s name is Brian with an “I”. So Bryan with a “Y” feels weird. He was the Columbian. He got the first impression rose; and no sh*t, because he made out with Rachel. Of course you make a first impression when you eat someone’s face. He ate her face. It was the make out that you have in privacy. You know that little kisses. A normal kiss, first kiss would be like, “Oh, here’s what my lips are like. Here’s a little sliver of my tongue.” No. Bryan with a Y went in deep. And he was like, “This is what it’s going to be like when we sleep together, biotch.” And he got the first impression rose. So go Bryan.
Dean, I don’t really know anything about Dean. But he had a really good tie, so I love him. I love a good tie. It was like floral pattern and slightly skinny. I was into it. DeMario. I can’t really picture him anymore, but I remember that he talked way too much. And then Diggy also talked a sh*t-ton. There’s a Diggy and Iggy, so that’s f*cking weird. I don’t know who I’m talking about, honestly, at this point.
Jack Stone. Let’s rewind. Since when do they put two names? Is this guy’s name literally Jack Stone? Is that for real? Because usually it’s like Jack S. And I don’t think there are any other Jacks. So this guy’s name is Jack Stone. Jack Stone definitely has some intense veneers. Veneers similar to the ones that Hillary Duff got at one point; her first veneers around that were just too big. Too white. Jack Stone filed his teeth down before he went on the show; fo sho. I don’t know, maybe I’m talking sh*t because I’m jealous. I want my teeth to be that even. Sh*t man, you worked hard at that Jack Stone. But he looks like a demon, for sure.
Jonathan. Jonathan is the one who was labeled “tickle monster.” That was labeled as his profession, and it sucks to be Jonathan. Because literally no one will take you seriously now ever in life, because you were named the tickle monster on the show. I doubt he will last long. But man, that was f*cking weird. Could you imagine if a guy tickled you on your first impression. I would punch him in the face. My husband comes near my ribcage, I actually punch him. So if a stranger did it; that’s a groin punch. That’s a wiener. That’s a ball-to-ball action punch. F*cking weird.
Kenny. Kenny is, I think Kenny is a top runner. He is a wrestler, and I’m talking WWE wrestling. Monday Night Raw. Total Divas. That guy; Oh, I love Total Divas. Add that to my list. F*ck, I haven’t watched that show in a while. I hate myself. So he wrestles. And he’s super cute, seems super nice. Has a 10-year-old daughter, so how old is he? Like 40? I guess other people have children younger and I am not that person. But he’s super cool. I just, I don’t really understand the wrestling. You are either in Monday Night Raw, or you keep your wrestling a secret until you make it to Monday Night Raw. Do you know what I mean? I don’t know. But if it got him on the show, props to you, Kenny.
Lee. His pompadour; his tall motherf*cking hair was so tall. He didn’t get much TV time, but it looked from the preview that he is a f*cking sh*t show, and a real dick. And that’s proof that the pompadour means you’re a dick. Just saying. Milton. I honestly don’t know if I’m talking about the right person with Milton. I think I am. But first of all, your mother is so cruel. I don’t know if that’s a grandfather’s name; Milton is not a name that should be pushed into the future. I don’t care who had it in your family. Who’s like; “Oh my god, this beautiful baby should be called Milton.” So f*cked up. Anyway. He got the boot. I’m pretty sure he’s the one who purred on her a couple of times. Purring is not ok in any sort of situation ever. Purring should never even come out of your mouth. But yeah. When he had his goodbye speech, because he got booted the first night. It was obviously, at least like 6-7 in the morning. He was probably drunk as f*ck. He’s so exhausted, just so ready to go to sleep. He gets the boot; he cried so hard. This poor guy. His friends are never going to let him live that down. This poor, poor soul cried his eyes out. And said that he’s super bummed because he doesn’t get to wear all the outfits that he planned for that show. Oh my god, I feel so bad for him. But Milton, your mom literally never gave you the chance.
Ok, and then Lucas. Lucas is the wa-bam guy. And I hate him, and don’t even want to talk about him, because that’s all he wants. And I learned from the Reality Steve podcast that he’s been on a couple of game shows, and he has whatever profile you have if you’ve done an actress. Like, IBDM or IMDB. I don’t know what it is. But he’s obviously on there to further his career, and he’s super f*cking annoying, and I hate him. So let’s move on.
That’s it. That’s it. That’s all I talked about on my post. But you can read the full post there on my blog. But that’s the breakdown of the first night. It was actually quite entertaining. I like this group of guys. I’m excited to get to know them, and really put my time into Monday night. I love it. I just love it, guys. Monday nights are the best now with the Bachelor back. Even if I don’t watch it on Monday, and I fast forward through the commercials another day, my week is made eternally better for the Bachelor.
2. Updates from Juli [20:40]
Oh, crap what was I going to tell you. I had it… Oh, ok. When I talked about the 10-year-old daughter, and people having kids young. I go through these stages. And I’ve talked about this on my blog. Because I get asked all the time if I’m going to have kids soon. And luckily that point in my life, the people have heard the “No” scenario enough times that people stop asking. But I have a cleaning lady, and she is pregnant with twins. And she was here the other day, and she also cleans my friend’s house, who is pregnant as well. My friend Sarah. My friend Sarah is about 6 months or so along, so she’s getting closer. So my cleaning lady; she’s like, “When are you going to get pregnant.” I was like, “Not any time soon. That’s not on the agenda.” And she’s like, “But you’ve been married for so long.” Let me reiterate; I’ve been married 1 year. Just 1 year and 1 month at this point. But I guess that’s a very long time. Whatever.
So she’s like, “You need to get pregnant so you and Sarah can raise your babies together.” I’m like, you know, I’m just not ready for that in my life. She keeps, “Oh my gosh you have to!” And she kind of keeps pressing. So I kind of fight back. Because that’s an honest question. “Hey are you going to have kids?” A lot of people, that’s what they see marriage; having kids as the next step. I get it. She kept pressing about it. So if you’re going to press, I’m going to press back. And I’m like, “I just like having freedom, having money, being able to go on trips when I want to. Just hang out with me and my husband. Being able to leave whenever I want to. Having freedom. Having freedom.” And I keep pressing that. And she finally gave up. Ha-ha! Won the battle. But just a reminder. Do not talk to people about when they should have children. That’s incredibly rude.
So anyways, I just had to bring that up, because I haven’t had that in a while. And I want to be like, “You know why I can’t have a child right now? Because we’ve got to paint our f*cking house.” Yeah. I want to paint this brick. If you have a baby; do you know how much it costs to have a baby? It costs a lot of money. Just to push a baby out of your vagina. Push it out. Or get a C-section, whatever you have to do. My friend just had to get an emergency C-section. And her baby was early, you have to wait in the hospital for a little bit. And then after insurance helps you pay, she still paid like $5,000. Just to push a human being out of your vagina. You don’t get a trophy for that. I guess she had a C-section. But still. You don’t get a trophy for using your body as a house for 10 months. And then being like; “Oh here, it’s the world.” And they’re like, “Give us money.” No, give me a f*cking trophy, b*tch.
Ok. That’s enough about babies. Let’s move on. Let’s move on with this day. This weekend is Memorial Day weekend. It is kind of crappy weather here. It’s in the 60s, so I don’t have many plans. I think I’m going to do Murph; think meaning I will. Because I’ve been doing it for the past 6 years. If you’ve never heard of Murph, it’s a CrossFit workout. CrossFit creates workouts for people who have been killed in war, in battle, and names these workouts. If you’ve ever seen the movie Lone Survivor, it actually has the guy, Murph, in that movie. So, it’s talking about that guy, Murph, in that movie. So it’s this workout that’s named Murph. It has a mile run at the beginning, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, and 300 air squats. Then after you finish all that, you run another mile. A lot of people do it with a, what’s it called, a weighted vest. But I just do it with my body. And how I break it up is do the mile run, and then I do 20 sets of Cindy, which is 5 pullups, 10 pushups, and 15 air squats. So I do that 20 times through. And then I run the mile. And it usually takes; I think it takes me like 45 to 48 minutes to do that. And I’m so sore for f*cking days afterwards. I don’t like doing it, especially because my implants don’t like doing that many pushups.
And then our f*cking coach at our gym, he programmed a workout just this past week. I did it on Wednesday. It was like a kind of style of Murph. It had running, and then it had handstand pushups, it had pullups, and it had air squats in it. And now I can barely straighten my arms because I’m so sore. Body weight just really fucks you up. But I don’t know how that prepped me for Monday, to get my ass whooped again. I feel like I need a week off. Anyway. That’s all I have planned for Memorial Day. I think we’re going to go to a barbecue, but it’s just so sh*tty out. My husband’s like, “Hey, let’s go to the lake!” I’m like, “It’s 65 degrees. Do you know what water temperature that is?” No. No. My sister-in-law was like, “Let’s go to the mountains.” I’m like, “Do you know what the temperature is in the mountains?” If it’s 60 degrees here, what do you think it is in the mountains? Oh my god, I sound like such a Debbie Downer today. I’m really not. I’m feeling Positive Polly over here, not a Debbie Downer, ok. I’m up and up. I do have to pee, though, so the rest of this podcast could get challenging.
3. Meal planning [26:50]
So let’s talk about why you’re even here today. Because it’s been 27 minutes, and you’re like, “Talk about f*cking meal plans. I hate you, Juli.” And I get it. This is how sometimes, not most of the time. But sometimes when I’m listening to My Favorite Murder, and they’re talking at the beginning, I’m like, “Uh just get to the murders! I just came here for the murder.” If you don’t listen to that podcast, you should. It’s the f*cking best. I get to go to a live show, and I’m very pumped about it. And I’m usually not a person who would want to go to that. I don’t go to concerts hardly ever. But if it’s about murder, I’m into it. Think what you will about me, ok. Think what you will.
So let’s talk about meal planning. First of all, I work from home nowadays. I didn’t always work from home. But I work from home now, for myself. So I can make food pretty much any time of the day, most of the time. So my meal planning is totally different than a person who works like a 9 to 5 job, Monday through Friday. But before I was blogging, I worked at a corporate wellness site and then I worked at multiple gyms. So I would leave; I would wake up usually at 3:30. I’d leave for the gym at 4:30, to open this corporate wellness gym at 5. And then I would work half a day there, then I would head to the gym to workout, and then I would work usually at the gym at night. And once I was done with that corporate wellness job, I worked at multiple gyms. Like 5 gyms at one time. So again, I would leave usually at 5, 4:30 or 5 in the morning, and then I’d be at some sort of gym, or workout, whatever it may be until 10 at night. So I had to do a lot of meal prepping before I worked from home. So I did this a lot.
But something you should understand about me, is when I first started paleo and first started doing meal prep, I had to do breakfast, lunch, and dinner with me. Snacks as well. And all of those meals looked exactly the same. I did not really spice it up. I made; honestly, at the beginning, I boiled chicken. And everybody thinks that’s so gross, but boiled chicken is quite moist. And then you just grill it, and it gets that char on the side. But whatever, that’s beside the point.
So I would do boiled chicken, I would roast broccoli until it was burnt, and then I would have avocado on the side. And put hot sauce all over it. And that was what I ate for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. And my snacks. So I’d make a huge batch of this, and then eat that breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and most snacks. Sometimes I’d have a protein shake. Sometimes I’d have something different for breakfast, like egg muffins. I was playing around with breakfast a lot when I first started paleo, trying to figure out what I would do. Because I ate cereal my entire life. So changing over to like a savory breakfast was really mind-boggling to me. So it took me a long time to kind of get that down.
But my meal prep was pretty simple, because I would just make a huge batch of veggies, a huge batch of chicken, and then get some avocados, hot sauce, boom. Meals were done. Pack that in Tupperware. Have that all in the fridge. Take all of them. Pack them in a bag and take them with me to wherever I was going. So that was very simple. I kept it that simple when I first started.
We are taught and created to think that we need to have food a certain way. And it’s hard to get out of that. So when I’m talking about this meal prep, I’m talking about what worked for me. And having to change my mindset. I had to change from thinking that lunch had to look like a sandwich; that lunch could really be any sort of meal. And it could look like every single meal I have. Whether that’s breakfast, or dinner. I really had to change my viewpoint in how I saw food. That is a hard thing to change. So just keep that in mind.
4. Meal planning services: Real Plans [31:17]
So the first thing I’m going to talk about; Jackson is crawling on top of me right now. So the first thing I’m going to talk about, because I highly recommend this to anybody and everybody. Because it is the best tool. If you’re trying to meal plan, and you’re having a hard time figuring it out and getting it down. I highly recommend this tool. There’s this company called Real Plans. If you go to my website; and I’ll link it in this podcast, as well. But if you go to my website, one of the main tabs says food, and then next to it says paleo meal plans. If you go to that, I talk about Real Plans in there. I’ve been working with this company for a year now. And the feedback has been absolutely amazing. People love this company. It truly is amazing, and it makes eating healthy, and providing for your family, and figuring out your budget. It makes everything so much easier.
So here’s a breakdown of Real Plans. Remember, you can get this on my website. You can actually see everything and get a breakdown of the tools; all that jazz. But, Real Plans. It’s a comprehensive meal planning tool online. It really helps you plan out your meals. It just makes the breakdown so much easier. If you’re a visual person, it helps incredibly so much with visual aids. But the site has literally thousands and thousands of recipes. It’s so cool how many recipes they have, and they continue to grow. They have all of my recipes in there. Which are over 700 now. They have a hard time keeping up week to week with all my recipes, because I add new ones so quickly. But they have 705 of my recipes uploaded within their system, and they’re doing that month-to-month, adding new ones. But they also have other blogs, like; I’m just looking at their site to get them all. Wellness Mama, Nom Nom Paleo, Paleo Mom, Nourished Kitchen, Autoimmune Paleo, Well Fed, Naturally Ella, Carly Bad Cravings, Cookie and Kate, Tasty Yummies, Health Home and Happiness; and they have Whole30. They added them recently. So they have all these Whole30 recipes on there.
So, you have not only a huge database of amazing recipes. And they’re not just all strictly paleo. They have paleo, they have gluten free, they have normal, regular food with regular flour. But then they have a ton of different breakdowns. So you can search AIP, you can search no pork. You can search egg-free, nut-free. Really anything. You’re like, “Oh, this is what my diet entails.” They can figure out. You can mark that down and all those recipes auto-populate for you. So if you’re doing keto right now, because keto is the huge thing everybody is doing. You can search keto recipes. They break it down for you.
But if you have a recipe that’s not in there, you can also add the recipes yourself. You can just copy and paste the whole recipe, and it will give you the breakdown and it will import it into your online system and into the app. So, you have all these recipes in there. And then they have an app, as well, that links to the online tool. So say you’re like, “Ok, I’m going to make this, this, this.” It auto-populates a grocery list into the app. So you can automatically have a grocery list on your app, go to the store, and it pulls up all the items you need and how much of that item. So like one head of broccoli, or two green onions. It gives you exactly what you need. So it really helps with not getting too much food. And I think that’s what people have a problem with. They either buy too little food, or too much. So when they get home, they either don’t have enough or food goes bad at the end of the week. So this eliminates that, because you’re using exactly how much food you need and you’re able to get that. Instead of buying 3 heads of broccoli, when you only need one. Sorry, you just yawned with me, didn’t you? Sorry. I’ve got to take a breather, you know. I’ve got to breathe through this. Get my water in.
So. That’s what’s so cool about this tool. It makes sure that you’re using exactly what you need. It also gives you a timeline. So how often have you gone to make a recipe, and you forgot to take the meat out of the freezer. And you’re like, f*ck, what am I going to do now? So it does that for you. It tells you the timeline of when you need to defrost. How much food you’re going to have to chop. How long a recipe will take you. It really gives you a whole breakdown of the timeline. Which is so cool. I know that timeline is super helpful for people.
Last. Not last, because they’re always adding new cool tools to their website. But one of the tools that I love is; say you’re like, “I don’t know what I want to make. I don’t know what I’m going to have tonight, at all. And I don’t want to f*cking look through a million recipes, and just get lost in all the recipes.” They have this thing called recipe roulette. Goddamn. Sorry for the yawns. I’m talking so fast. So, recipe roulette. It’s almost like a Tinder. So a recipe pops up, and you can either thumbs up, or thumbs down. So if you’re like, “You know what, no I don’t want spaghetti squash. Thumbs down.” It pops up a brand new totally completely different recipe. And you can thumbs up or thumbs down. And you can always save them. You’re like, “Oh, that looks good. I want to make that for later.” You can save it. But then find something else.
So yeah. It is a super helpful tool when you’re stuck and you don’t know what to make. So if you have a hard time meal planning, I highly recommend starting up with this service. It’s super easy to sign up, and you can add all of my recipes to it; that’s an addon. And it adds all the recipes into the system. It is so cool. Their customer service is amazing, so if you have any issues or any questions, they get back to you in seconds. They’re awesome. You need to work with them. They’re amazing. Ok? Ok. So that’s what I first and foremost recommend for meal planning. The reviews are amazing. I’ve used it myself when I’ve been playing around with it, and it is so cool. It’s just so cool.
5. Time saving strategies [38:21]
So now we got that over and done with. If you don’t want to try that, that’s fine. Let’s talk about some other things. When I’m talking right now, I have no idea who I’m talking to. It could be a family with 10 children. It could be a single person. It could be a person in college. It could be a person with just their husband or wife. It could be really anybody. So I’m going to talk about this as one person. Literally, you’re a single. And you can fill in the blanks from there.
A lot of people always ask, “How can I make meal planning faster so I don’t have to spend much time on Sundays?” Well, you can do it exactly how I do it. F*cking boil a bunch of chicken, roast a bunch of broccoli, you’re done. Easy. Fast. Not that much time. But at the end of the day, making healthier food takes more time than making food that’s bad for you. If you want to eat food that’s fast, and doesn’t take much time and effort, most of the time that means packaged foods or microwavable meals. Whatever. You can always get a meal service. So they give you meals directly. But if you want to save money, and do it yourself, it’s going to take time. It’s going to take more money. And that’s how it is. Eating healthier is more expensive at this point in our lives. Sadly, if the government ever decides to change maybe that will be different. But eating healthier does cost a little bit more money.
I do have a podcast about paleo on a budget, and talk about ways to stay on budget with that. But just know, it takes more time. That’s it at the end of the day. And sorry, that’s how it is. I didn’t go out when I was competing in CrossFit, because I didn’t want to drink, and I didn’t want to eat sh*tty food. And I wanted to save money, and I wanted to eat paleo when I was making $17,000 a year. So I stayed in and I made all of my meals and I got cheap food and boiled chicken and roasted broccoli and that was it. So just know that it does take time, and that’s how it’s going to be. If you don’t want to take that much time, use a crockpot. Use an Instant Pot. Find the ways that will cook meat, and you don’t have to do much work with it. And you can totally do it.
If you’re meal prepping; again, remember, I’m just talking about one person. I recommend making two different main courses. If you’re a person who is like, “I’m not going to do f*cking boiled chicken, Juli.” So, I recommend making two main courses. Maybe you’re making; I always see a lot of people do tuna casseroles. Because casseroles can be reheated really easily. So make two main dishes. Two main dishes that you can switch off. One day you’ll have, say my pizza casserole. Another day you have my gnocchi casserole. Then you go to pizza casserole, gnocchi casserole. So you’re switching between days to make it a little bit easier.
I also recommend making a few side dishes, so you can kind of have a different array of not only greens, but colors, and vitamins, and minerals in your diet. So I always; not always. But I try to more often, recently, making. I make a big tomato salad, a big beet salad, and then I always have arugula that I buy at the beginning of the week and use as the week goes on just to throw some extra greens. And you see me do that on Instagram all the time. But I like getting extra greens just somehow that I don’t have to work hard for. So I don’t have roast the veggies or cook them in a pan. So I just like getting arugula. So get a green that doesn’t take much work. So then you can make these big side dishes that you can just scoop and add. Like having raw side dishes, it’s easier because you don’t have to reheat it, and it tastes even better over time, most of the time, when you’re working with something like tomato salad. It just gets better over time, as the flavors kind of meld together. So having two main dishes, and a couple of side dishes, you can do roasted veggies. You could do a tomato salad, beet salad, baked potato or sweet potatoes. Plantains. Just keeping it simple, not spending too much time. Not making like fritters. Just keeping the vegetables simple. The simpler you keep it, the less money and time you’re going to spend on those meals.
After you make your food, I recommend letting it cool first. So a lot of times, you open it up and you almost pass out because the it smells so bad. Let it cool, so then once you seal it you’re not sealing in that heat with all those smells. That just makes it a little bit less raunchy smelling when you open it back up. And I always pack mine in plastic Tupperware. Judge as you will. You can do glass if you’re freaking out about plastic. Whatever. You can get glass Tupperware. Those resealables. And then you can pack those all in the fridge or freezer.
If you’re doing things in the freezer; and I learned this from my friend, Cassy. From www.FedandFit.com. She has a huge book of almost 200 recipes that are all freezer friendly, and she talks about freezing your food. So what I recommend, which I learned from her, let something defrost in the fridge or on the counter. Let it defrost, and then recook it the way you cooked it in the first place. So maybe you baked it; you can place it back in the oven to reheat while you bake it. Like roasting it, roasted vegetables. If you roasted them the first time, roast them in the oven the second time when you’re defrosting them, or after they’ve been defrosted. If you cook something in a pan, cook it in the pan again.
I’ve eaten salmon multiple days in a row after making it the first day, and all I did was just turn on the broiler, and reheat it under the broiler because that’s how I cooked it in the first place. And it’s seriously just as good second and third day. I swear to you. So reheating it however you did it in the first place.
I understand that’s not always possible, and a microwave is what you’re going for most of the days you’re at work. I don’t really recommend seafood in the microwave. Not only because it’s gross, but you’re a f*cking asshole if you’re at work and you’re reheating salmon or shrimp or white fish in the microwave. Because that microwave is going to smell for f*cking days. So, I recommend staying away from that, but you do you. Just get fired, whatever.
Just know that if you don’t like something in the microwave, and that’s you’re only option; maybe you need to get over it. At the end of the day, food is fuel and not every meal is supposed to be the best meal of your life. I eat food cold all the time. Because I don’t want it in the microwave, and I don’t want to heat it back up in a pan. And I’ve eaten food cold millions of times, and it’s not the end of the world. You’re fine. Get over it. So if you’re a person who can’t stand microwave and that’s you’re only option, then make something else. Make something that you’re cool with cold, like a salad. That you can make chicken and you’re cool with having the chicken cold in a salad. So, program to what your programmed to want. If that makes sense.
Another thing. If all that sounds too hard; this is something I do every Friday, pretty much now. I make a giant hash. And I do this on Fridays because I’m just using up whatever was left in the fridge. So I’m using all the veggies and whatever else so they don’t go back. But if making all these meals sounds hard and terrible, make a giant hash of vegetables and meat, cooked in a healthy fat with some good spices. Then you have this giant hash to eat for whatever meal. So then you could top an egg on it for breakfast, or add some breakfast sausage to it. So then it just feels like a pretty tasty meal, but you’re getting a ton of different vegetables and meat and whatever else in it. I hope that makes sense.
7. Snacks [47:21]
I get a lot of questions about snacks. I ask people for questions on snacks. I asked people for questions on Instagram, and I got a lot of questions for snacks. Snacking is one of those things that’s been really programmed into us. And often we’re eating snacks because we’re not having big enough meals. I know I eat more snacks when I’m not feeding myself enough at actual meal times. And everyone is different. But I think it’s important that you reprogram your brain to understand that you don’t need a protein bar. You don’t need these packaged foods like crackers. We don’t need those things. Sure, we may want them. And sometimes, f*ck, we have no other option and this bar is all we have. I get it. But if we’re like, “Ok, I need a snack. I just need to get out of the office and I’m just going to snack instead, so I don’t have to stare at my computer screen.” Which I do, working from home. I think it’s important to reprogram yourself that snacks aren’t something we always need, and you should see snacks as something different. So maybe it should be a smaller meal.
And I do that all the time. When I packed my food with me, all day long, and I was packing chicken, broccoli, and avocado with me, I literally had smaller Tupperwares where I’d add a smaller chicken, broccoli, and avocado. Or like some almonds, when I was eating almonds back then. To Tupperware, and that was my snack. It wasn’t a protein bar. It wasn’t a yogurt. I was having a smaller meal at the end of the day. So keep that in mind.
I think listening to Cassy, from Fed and Fit, I’m sure she has podcasts about it. But her program, her online program and her book, both talk about snacking. And how we kind of need to eliminate snacking. I’m not trying to make you starve yourself. But if we can increase our meal size, so we can feel fuller longer, and get rid of some of that snacking that occurs. It’s pretty beneficial. And it saves you money, right? Because protein bars are f*cking expensive.
8. Changing your mindset around food [49:32]
Let’s see. I talked about that; reheating it however you made it. And then I talked about getting over yourself. I know that sounds so b*tchy. But believe me, I say this sh*t to myself all the time. Remember that, not every meal is supposed to be the best meal of your life. Hopefully this is not the last meal of your life, for sure. If it was I’d be like, ok get to your favorite restaurant. But this is just another meal. And we’re programmed to…
I say this, “We’re programmed.” I say this coming from a background where I ate complete sh*t growing up. I ate at fast food for most meals. I drank Mountain Dew. I drank, whatever they’re called, energy drinks like Rock Stars. I did not take care of my body. So I was programmed to believe that this was just how it was supposed to be. We’re supposed to eat sh*tty food, and we’re supposed to, every single meal, we’re supposed to have this endorphin high from our meal. Like when you’re eating a cheeseburger from McDonald’s, and it’s loaded with f*cking sugar and additives and preservatives and f*cking sh*t, and gluten. And I have this spike, and I’m like, “Oh I feel so much better. I’m so happy!” And we’re programmed to believe we’re supposed to feel like that all the time. So I believed that I was supposed to feel that excitement about food for every meal, instead of just enjoying actual food.
So remember that you should not feel; you don’t have to feel like that every time. I think the healthier you eat. And long-term healthier. Not just, “Oh I eat healthy Monday through Friday. And then the weekend comes on and I eat total sh*t.” Or, “I go on these sporadic diets all the time where I’m eating super clean and then going to have an entire pizza somewhere.” I’m talking about eating clean long-term. And every single meal is a meal that you’re nourishing your body with. And sure, you’re still enjoying the moments where you’re having cake at a friend’s birthday party. Or having some cocktails with your friends. Or eating something you wouldn’t normally on vacation. But long-term, you’re eating healthy. The more you eat that way, the less I think you worry about; how do I say this. The less you worry about how the texture is of something. Or that it didn’t taste like the original. I just reheated some roasted Brussel sprouts in the oven with leftover chicken and had a tomato salad on the side. That chicken and Brussel sprouts both did not taste like last night. They’re not crunchy. The chicken didn’t have a crust like it did last night. It’s kind of chewier. I don’t care. Because I’ve nourished my body with healthy food, and I just don’t worry about that anymore. And I wasn’t always like that.
So I think the healthier you eat, the more that you’re just excited to have still delicious food. I don’t know if that totally makes sense. But the healthier you eat, the less you worry about all those little things. Like the texture and if it was exactly like the original. You’re just excited to have healthy food when it’s hard to make sure you have healthy food for every meal. For me, even working from home. I have a harder time with lunches, because I want to get my work done. I don’t want to make lunch. So having easy options, even if they don’t taste like the original, I don’t care. I’m very pleased to have that. And the healthier you eat, the less you worry about those things. That’s me personally. That’s just speaking from my own personal experience, and what I’ve experienced with eating paleo and gluten free for about 7 years now. So that’s how I’ve kind of gotten through it, and it’s gotten better and better. But the healthier you eat long-term, not just sh*t-show eating. Like, “Oh I eat healthy and then I just go f*cking hard and ruin everything that I’ve created for myself over the past year.” Or whatever. The better you get at it.
9. Planning a list, and shopping [54:01]
So, I wanted to answer a couple of questions. I got a ton of different questions. They weren’t all related to meal planning, so I’m keeping this in meal planning. And I tried to cover those topics without mentioning the questions as I went through all these topics. So one of these questions was, “How do you plan your grocery list, and how often do you shop?” I’ve recently gotten a lot of questions about what my grocery bag looks like when I get back from the store. So I was thinking about maybe doing a post about that. But the thing is, I think my grocery shopping is very different than most people. Because I am purchasing food to create new recipes. And so, if I was eating like a normal person and finding recipes online, I would be using Real Plans to make a breakdown of exactly what I needed to buy at the store. But me, I go to the store and kind of buy random sh*t. Because I’m like, “What am I going to make for the blog this week?” The more that I’ve done that, the better I get at, “Oh, I need to plan meals.” So, what protein do I need? What vegetables would go with that protein? And I get better at it with time.
Something I’ve talked about before on the blog, and I’ve been really loving. I started working with Butcher Box. So I have a subscription monthly package of meat. So they send a bunch of meat, all kind of random. So I’ll base what I’m making for dinner that week based off the meat that I got. Sometimes it changes based on what they send. Because you don’t always get the same meat. So, my grocery list always looks totally different. I think I’m going to do a blog post about that. Because I think that would be a fun post to kind of share what I find at different stores. Whether that’s Trader Joe’s, or Whole Foods, or Natural Grocer’s. The stores that are near me. I grocery shop all the f*cking time. I go to the grocery store probably four times a week, if not more. Just because; maybe I can’t find an ingredient. And I have to go to another grocery store. Or maybe I didn’t like the flowers, and I want certain flowers for a photo. So I go to a different store. So I go to the grocery store a lot. And recipes do fail, and I have to remake them. So I have to go back to the grocery store. So I go to the grocery store on a regular basis, even if it’s just to pop in for a couple of ingredients. But I go pretty often in the week. I think four times is pretty often, personally. I’d like to only go once. But it does get me out of the house, which is always good for my brain.
10. How long food keeps [56:56]
“How long with different foods keep in the fridge?” That’s obviously a very broad question. So that is totally dependent on the food. And if it’s organic or it’s not organic. Organic foods usually go bad faster because it’s not sprayed with preservatives and whatever f*cking sh*t; formaldehyde that they put on food. So organic food goes bad a little bit faster. And I think as you grab different foods, you’ll notice that it goes bad faster. And I’ll find ways to keep my food lasting longer. So I’ll put a paper towel in my greens, because it soaks up the excess liquid that the greens; the precipitation that the greens will get on them, like arugula. And that creates a mold pretty quickly. So I put a paper towel in there, and that makes the greens last longer. For cilantro, I cut the ends off the cilantro and put them in water, so cilantro stays fresh longer. So I think you find what items stay fresh longer. I do a lot of freezer vegetables, so I don’t have to worry about it. I can have green beans in the freezer, and those defrost really quickly and cook really fast. So then I don’t have to worry about green beans going bad in the fridge, and I can really cook green beans whenever I see fit. So I’ll do a lot of freezer vegetables.
But I’d say, thinking that you’re going to have a food for 3-5 days is a good rule at hand. And I’m sure they have charts online how long something lasts. So f*cking Google is your friend. If you ever have a question, Google that sh*t. But I’m sure they kind of have breakdowns with that online. But the more you cook, the more you’ll see how long something will last. I consider it 3-5 days is a good rule of thumb. I grocery shop on Mondays, and then I do my big hash of all my vegetables left in the fridge on Fridays. Because I’m trying to clean it out before everything goes bad. And that’s about 5 days.
11. Measuring food [59:04]
“How do you measure food when you cook in big portions?” Honey, I don’t. I absolutely do not measure anything when I’m cooking in huge batches, or just cooking for myself and not for a recipe. I know how to eye things a little bit better, and I know what has sucked in the past. And you know, sometimes you have fails when you’re trying things yourself. And I do all the time. So I don’t measure. You just kind of get a better eye for something the more you do it. So the more you cook, you’ll be like, “Ok, that didn’t taste good. Why? Because I added so much chili powder. I need to back off on that.”
And then breakfast meal prep ideas. I get this question a couple of times, along with snacks. I think it’s important to remember that breakfast is just another meal. Again, we’re programmed to think it should look a certain way. For me, I was programmed to think I needed something sweet at breakfast every day, and you f*cking don’t that’s for sure. So when I pack my husband breakfast to go, I’ll usually top his with eggs. But I do plantains or potatoes. I put that on top of some sort of green, like arugula or if there’s another vegetable I have, like roasted Brussel sprouts. Put that on top of that. And then I do some sort of meat. So whether that’s a sausage, or chicken. Whatever meat I have, I put that on top of that. Maybe top it with eggs. I don’t eat eggs myself usually anymore, unless I’m eating out. So I top his with eggs and some hot sauce. And boom, you have a meal.
Or, today my breakfast was chicken, those Brussel sprouts, and tomato salad. And that was what I had for dinner last night. So it’s just another meal. I don’t have to think about it. And I’m happy to not think about it, and just eat what I had the night before. So I think the easy meal ideas is just doing that. The greens, maybe a starch if you’re eating starch, and then some sort of meat and whether you need fat in that diet or not. I just have the fat that’s in the meat itself, or cooked in. Whatever. And that’s it. I think that’s an easy breakfast idea. I show my breakfast on Instagram all the time, so if you need more ideas, just go to my Instagram page. I have a ton of breakfast ideas there. Or my blog has a sh*t-ton of breakfast ideas. Boom. How’s that? How about them apples?
Ok. So, I need to get going. Before I go, I did want to tell you about a new podcast I’m listening to. Because I love when people tell me about podcasts to listen to when I’m listening to other podcasts. So one I just listened to is; what’s it called? Ponzi Supernova. Check out Ponzi Supernova. It’s about Bernie Madoff, and I wanted to watch that HBO special about Bernie. I knew what Bernie did, but I don’t really understand stocks and bonds and anything that has to do with money. So I didn’t really understand what he went to jail for other than fraud. Fraud of money. A lot of f*cking money. But this podcast, it only has four episodes so far. And they’re really short, they’re like 30 minutes. But it’s really good. And it has just little details that you didn’t probably know about it in the first place unless you actually read a sh*t-ton about Bernie Madoff. But it’s really interesting. Now I want to totally watch that new HBO special.
Another one is The Vanished. It’s pretty sad. It’s about people who have gone missing and never been found. But I really love what she’s doing, and just getting people’s information out there. Because you never know if these people are still alive. It’s pretty crazy. But the Vanished is a good one.
And then on Netflix, this is one you watch with your eyes. On Netflix there is this new show called Captive. I don’t know how new it is. They have probably 9 or so episodes. The first episode is bananas. B-A-N-A-N-A-S. It’s bananas. It’s about this prison in Ohio that breaks out in a riot, and all these people die. It’s f*cking crazy. And I don’t know how I never knew that was in the 90s. How was I not informed of this, mother?
So anyways. Those are some of the things I’m watching and listening to. And I want to watch Mommy-something Dearest. Mommy; what is it called? I forget what it’s called but it’s on Netflix and I’ve heard about it from a couple of people. It’s pretty crazy. I forget what the syndrome is called. I don’t know. Just go watch. Just look at Mommy Dearest. Mommy Dreadful Dearest? I don’t f*cking know. I don’t even know why I’m trying. So, I need to go watch that and let you know what I think of that. If you like murder stuff, you should watch that, for sure.
Ok. I need to go. It’s Friday. I’ve got to go do stuff. I’ve got to go mark stuff off my to-do list. I bought a printer months ago, and I still don’t know how to set up the Wi-Fi. So I’m still going to Kinko’s to print and scan everything, when I have a printer here. It’s f*cking; it’s also bananas. So I’m out of here. I hope you have a wonderful day. Thanks so much for tuning in. Don’t forget to subscribe, rate, review. Do all that jazz. But only nice reviews, because we’re spreading positivity in a world that’s full of f*cking hatred out there. So let’s spread some positive vibes. Be nice to people. This is coming from a person who just made fun of all these dudes on the Bachelor. But that’s beside the point, ok. I really need to get out of here. Go to www.PaleOMG.com. Don’t miss any of the new content I shared this week. I did two new recipes. I shared my favorite beauty products, that really have transformed my skin, totally. I have a cute outfit. I have details from the Nordstrom half-yearly sale. I got all kinds of sh*t on there. Go there. Go there right now. Ok, I’m out of here. I’ll talk to you guys soon. Have a wonderful day. Bye-bye!
Loved this podcast! I agree that changing your mindset around what types of foods constitute each meal is difficult to get over. I’m stuck on breakfast. I hate eating a carb heavy breakfast, but I need something quick so I tend to grab a bar or a quick bowl of cereal. I need to work harder on changing my perspective. There’s no reason why I can’t have salads with hard boiled eggs or leftovers from dinner the night before. Kinda weird how we have such a hard time getting over that mind block around “what breakfast (or whatever meal) is suppose to look like”.
I ate a leftover hamburger for breakfast a few weeks ago and my husband was like, “That is so weird!” LOL. I thought it was tasty.
no way!! hamburger is the best!
Some great ideas in here thanks! I’ve got young kids, work part time and prepare lunch and dinner for my husband to take to work each day and here are a few things that have helped me with meal prep:
– Put a crockpot on overnight. This works for things that take a good 8-9 hours to cook, such as a large roast. My husband spends some time with the kids before they go to bed each night so I sometimes use that time to clean the kitchen and put a crockpot on. I pack it in glass containers for the fridge / freezer in the morning.
– Buy a mini crockpot to heat food up in. Much healthier than a microwave and food tastes better. We keep one at work and at home. Put it on when you get to work / before going out in the morning and lunch is ready when you want it.
– Buy some fresh salad stuff to keep in the fridge at work along with olive oil, mayo etc and keep some frozen veggies in the freezer at work. These are good to put in the mini crockpot if you haven’t had time to prepare fresh sides.
– I always have some protein defrosting in the fridge so am never in the position where there is no protein / meat to cook. I base my meals on whatever I put out and it keeps the meat rotating in the freezer / variety.
– Try new recipes on the weekend and stick with what I know during the week. Over the years I’ve saved my favorite recipes on my laptop and have built a good database. Because I’m familiar with them, I tend to stick with these during the week but still have a lot of variety.
love all these tips!
My friends think I’m weird because I eat leftovers for breakfast! However, an easy meal prep thing I do is to hardboil a bunch of eggs and whip up some Paleo Mayo (or buy some from Primal Foods if I can get to the store). In the morning, I diced up 2 eggs and mix it with the mayo and avocado for egg salad. Then I just add some fruit, veggies, or a starch and call it good!
Oh and one more thing. I don’t know if you like reading or not, but you mentioned the podcast on the Bernie Madoff scandal. I read this book by his daughter in law. She explains how everything went down and how scary it was that they didn’t know what was going on.

Loved your podcast and had a serious LOL moment when you were talking about the “ball to ball action punch” regarding strangers tickling you HAHA! Anyway – loved the podcast as always! I finally signed up for Butcher Box and I’m extremely pumped for it. Thanks for all your awesome recipes, workouts, style tips etc! You’re the bomb.com JRB!
