I am sleeeeeepy this morning. Last night I popped some NyQuil since I’ve been waking up with a sore throat in the mornings this past week. My husband had food poisoning (but maybe it was the stomach flu) then I ended up seeing 50 Shades Darker with a few friends who were coughing a bit, so I finally caught something. Damn winter. It’s seriously the pits. So I’m having a hard time keeping my eyes open to write this post. No seriously, I keep falling asleep every 4 words. This post may be short lived….

PaleOMG Mocha Hazelnut Energy Balls

So instead of talking about what’s going on in life, let’s just talk about these balls. I’ve become obsessed with making energy balls as a little treat. I’ll make them, keep them in the fridge, and eat them as a treat after dinner before I head off to bed. I seriously love them right now! And I linked a couple others that I’ve made so you should totally make those, too! Have a little ball party! Have a ball of a time! HA! See what I did there?!

OMGIWANTTOSEEBEAUTYANDTHEBEASTSOBAD!! I’m seriously counting down the days until Beauty and The Beast comes out. I couldn’t even tell you how many times I’ve seen the cartoon version and I think Emma Watson is going to crush it. I get chills every time I see the commercial? How weird is that?

Ok, that’s literally all my brain can handle today. I’ve fallen asleep already 6 times while writing this post. Sickness is so gross. I hate it. Ok, love you, bye bye, see you tomorrow, tomorrow will be better, go kick Thursday’s ass!

Please get some rest before answering these questions:
Do you eat at scheduled times or just when you are hungry? I know you said you normally stop eating when you feel full, but sometime I struggle with trusting whether I am truly hungry or need food versus snacking. Do you go with a general rule of thumb for the size of your meals based on what keeps you full?

I think you mentioned it before, but often do you snack?
Do you drink a lot of caffeine? Like coffee throughout the day or just in the morning?
What are your thoughts on energy drinks like RUNA?

When you eat desert do you eat a little less at dinner? Do you usually eat desert right away after dinner or later? also do you only eat desert or a snack like this if you are hungry before bed?
I feel like I could convince myself that I never actually need desert because I had a regular meal, but what is the fun in that?

i don’t eat at specific times but i definitely always have breakfast, lunch and dinner and i’m usually hungry around the same time of day, every day. when it comes to snacks, i just eat when i’m hungry, i don’t really time those out. i try to make sure i’m drinking a ton of water and that helps me figure out if i’m actually hungry or just bored. i think i’m pretty good at eyeing how much i should eat when it comes to protein, fat and carbs, but sometimes i’m more hungry and go back for seconds. but i always stop when i’m satisfied.
i snack probably 2-3 times per day, sometimes a yogurt, sometimes smoked salmon, sometimes gf granola with almond milk.
i don’t drink a ton of caffeine. i have 1 coffee per day, sometimes will have a cold brew coffee in the afternoon if i’m dragging, but i try to not drink more than 1 cup very often
i’ve never heard of RUNA but i’m not a fan of energy drinks, not matter how “clean” they are
i don’t change my eating habits if i plan to have dessert. i want the full nutrition from my meal. sometimes i eat dessert right away and other times i wait. and i just eat dessert when i’m craving it, as long as i’m not craving it every day, because that’s showing me a sugar addiction

Not feeling so great myself, so maybe more than my brain can handle. But why do you eat an energy ball before bed?

    1. juli says:

because it tastes good and i like it

  3. Brooke says:

Sorry! Energy Ball + sleep doesn’t make sense to me. But. I am going to try them. In the morning. Your buffalo chicken spaghetti squash is only thing my husband will eat spaghetti squash in!

    1. juli says:

didn’t say you had to eat them at night

    2. Brooke W says:

I like to keep energy balls in my fridge for a little after dinner/before bed treat too! Brooke, the “energy” basically just means it has some sort of protein in it and protein before bed has shown to do wonders for the waistline. Keeps your metabolism revved up throughout the night! As this recipe shows, there is no caffeine in it so it won’t keep you up at night if that is what you are worried about.

These look amazing! Plus your photography is ON POINT. I can tell that you must have a lot of fun with it and I really, truly appreciate it (it’s also super inspiring from an artistic AND food standpoint)!

    1. juli says:

thank you so much, anna! i had someone tell me not to over style my photos but that’s one of the most fun parts! so thank you for the support!

  7. Mary says:

Thank you for your big balls! I love these. The coffee gives it just the right richness and dept of flavor. I used almond butter and cocoa nibs, in place of choc.. chips (only because I was out). Added a good crunch. So delish!

  8. Denise says:

    Hey Juli,

For your sore throat, sucking on a fresh half clove of garlic for 20 minutes a few times a day works miracle. Garlic’s antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal properties can help relieve the common cold as well as other infections. Garlic contains Allicin, which is believed to be the magic compound. And the sulphur content stimulates your immune system. You may alienate a lot of folk with the pungent odor (and a few vampires) but it is my go to sore throat prevention when my throat starts to itch and feels a little sore. I also increase my probiotics, bone broth and tea with honey and lemon. Fresh garlic can slightly burn, but you get used to it.

Hope this helps for next time.

Oh, and eager to make these balls.

    Hi Juli,

First I can’t stop eating these! Second, you have an awesome list of Denver restaurants in the travel section of the blog – my boyfriend and I will be there for 1 night only next Monday – which one should we choose?!

    Thanks!

    1. juli says:
