I really had no plan to talk about this on my blog, but after sharing my excitement for my Purple Pillow and having so many questions from people through instagram messaging, I added it to my blog post list! It turns out I’m not the only one out there that has neck issues, especially issues stemming from the pillow I use to sleep on every night.

So let’s do a quick history recap about my neck. I never use to have any issues with it, but it seems like once I hit 30, all my choices from my 20s finally caught up to me, especially my CrossFit competition days. And when I was competing in CrossFit, one of my best movements was kipping handstand push ups. I could do them so quickly and usually catch up to someone who was much stronger than me. But it turns out, the more you drop onto your head at a quick pace, the more damage it will tend to do over time. Groundbreaking news, I know. So about 6 months back, I started experiencing issues with my neck and traps and I would get an instant headache as soon as I started doing HSPU or overhead barbell movements. And these mild headaches would last for DAYS at a time. I rarely ever get headaches in the first place so it was super weird to be experiencing that. Once I couldn’t take it anymore, I finally started going to Apollo Soft Tissue to asses what was going on and why.

So here’s the thing – if you don’t let damage heal, it will just get worse over time. And I figured that out quite a while ago when I use to workout 7 days/week, multiple times per day, saying that I was having “active recovery” days. I hate those words together now. I use to run 3-5 miles on my “active recovery” days, not letting my body heal in any capacity. And because of that, I was constantly exhausted, I couldn’t recover, and I started to get injuries. Nowadays I take 2 COMPLETE days off where I don’t do anything other than walk Jackson around my small park. But what I didn’t know was that some of the movements I was doing regularly was still hindering my healing process. And that’s what Apollo Soft Tissue helped me figure out.

After cutting out HSPU and overhead barbell movements for a couple months and not seeing the full results we’d like to see, we started chatting about what I was sleeping on. And turns out, my pillows were not doing me any favors. And I tried every pillow I could find at the store, but nothing seemed to work. No matter how much money I spent at the store, I would wake up with a sore neck the next morning. So Dr. John at Apollo Soft Tissue finally recommended two different pillows.

  1. Purple Pillow
  2. Therapeutica Pillow

These two pillows are completely different from each other. The Purple Pillow uses a Hyper-Elastic Polymer Smart Comfort Grid (obviously I got that from the description because those are words I don’t use in my vocabulary). The hundreds of tiny triangles let the pillow relax under pressure without losing support and the Free Air Flow technology with breathable channels neutralizes temperatures and won’t trap heat like memory foam pillows. This pillow is amazing for me because I sleep incredibly hot every single damn night.

The Therapeutica Pillow is measured for your size. You measure from your neck to your shoulder to get the perfect fit once you purchase your pillow. This pillows ergonomic design offers comfortable support and stability in all sleeping postures. The result is a more sound sleep and less tendency to wake with pain, stiffness and many of the symptoms resulting from lack of support.

I’ve tried both pillows and I much prefer the Purple Pillow over the Therapeutica Pillow, but my husband is the complete opposite. He wasn’t a fan of the Purple Pillow so his spends most of the time on the floor, which isn’t my favorite thing. Since using the Purple Pillow, cutting out handstand push ups completely and limiting my overhead barbell movements, I’ve had no headaches for a solid 2 months now. It took some time to get there, multiple appointments at Apollo Soft Tissue and facing the fact that I can’t do some movements I love at the gym, but I’m back to feeling like myself again, which is way more important to me.

Something I’ve learned from chatting with Dr. John from Apollo Soft Tissue is that you don’t actually have to be in pain all.the.time. That became my normal years ago when I started CrossFit and wasn’t taking care of myself. But I’m slowly getting to a place where I feel good throughout my workouts, sore from whatever I did, and back on track quicker than ever.

So if you’re wondering if the Purple Pillow will work for you, I can at least tell you that I’ve LOVED it. It’s been a complete game changer for me. And yes, it takes some getting use to compared to normal pillows, but it’s been so helpful for a restful night sleep and a better morning. I also know many people who own the Purple Mattress and say they absolutely love it…which is making me think about getting one in the future. But for now, I’m sticking with the pillow because it’s the best! Hope this helps you out and let me know if you have any questions about either pillow!

I have literally tried 10+ pillows in the last few years and have yet to find one that really supports my neck. I might have to give this one a try!

Juli, if you haven’t already, you should definitely check out the Dr. Death podcast – it’s new and it’s like Dirty John, but I dare say I enjoy this one even more!

    Thanks!

Will you completely cut out lifting overhead? I have neck issues too. I cut out handstand push-ups but I think I need to stop lifting overhead too. I get the same headache and my traps get soooooo sore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i cut out all barbell overhead movements, but I still did some dumbbell overheads movements instead. now I’m back to overhead barbell movements at light weights and it seems to be going well!

Ive had to cut it out after herniated C6 a year ago. People don’t realize how bad it is for the neck and there’s so much poor coaching out there. I had no idea my form was bad. 🙁

Juli – ooo this is so awesome – I’ve been wanting to hear about your pillow. I’m having MAJOR trap/neck issues. Do you sleep on your back or your side? I have a water pillow but it’s just not cutting it and I still wake up stiff and sore. Thanks Juli!!

In the market for a new neck support pillow. Do you use a pillowcase over that or just as is?
If no pillow case, can the pillow be washed?

    1. juli says:

yes, it comes with a pillow case on top!

This is amazing! I hit 30 and everything fell to crap. Have you tried the plexus wheel for this pain? I ordered one the other day and if it works, I may just have to add on a purple pillow as well!

    1. juli says:

      never heard of it!!

Why does your husband prefer the therapeutic pillow? I am trying to decide which one would be the best purchase. I tend to sleep on my side or stomach. I have been having pain in my neck and left should blade area. Any input would be great!

    1. juli says:

i’m honestly not really sure. he just didn’t really like the feel of it

I have been sleeping on the Theraputica pillow for over 6 years and love it. I too, started having neck and shoulder and arm pain from workouts about a year ago and static/repetitive movements at my job (dental hygienist). Had to give up overhead gym movements, push-ups, etc. The Theraputica supports the curve of my neck so well. I love it so much, I ordered a second one to have at my parents’ house when I visit. PS … I turn 60 next month. ????

I’ve been having the exact SAME issues for about 6 years now and I stopped doing overhead movements and HSPU but now theres a huge knob on my neck aside of where my C4 is :'( It sucks that we are all experiencing this but now I feel like I’m not alone!

    1. juli says:

you definitely aren’t alone. i think these issues continue to pop up more and more
