Sorry if my emotional post the other day was a bit too intense for your taste. I was flying back from California on my delayed flight and was raging with too much sugar. I definitely was telling the truth, though. So I appreciate all who listened and commented back. It’s amazing to read some of those posts and se of the people who go through the same frustrations. You guys are so great.

Let’s talk about lighter topics though. Like my pedicures that are not getting their money’s worth. I know I’m a terrible runner. I really am. My hips and ankles are screwed up from gosh knows what, so one of my ankles collapses in when I run. Not a good look, or feeling. It’s actually even painful for me to stand up on a bike in spin class because my feet go numb. How crazy is that? Anywho. I think because I suck at running so much, my feet are looking worse and worse. I get a pedicure and 3 days later, I need another one. Don’t get me wrong, my toenails look pretty in pink, but when you look underneath, it’s a whole different story. Gross. I need a miracle pedicure. Or new hips.

I hate how many spots I miss while shaving my legs. What’s the point.

So I’m going on a little vacation next week for the 4th of July. Well, kind of. I wouldn’t call it a vacation because it’s not really my style. It includes camping. And well, I haven’t been camping in a loooong time. Because camping isn’t really my thing. I prefer using my own bathroom. Just personal preference. But I’m being open to trying new things. And we are camping right next to a lake, which is way more fun. So I can’t really complain. I’ll be surrounded by some pretty rad friends. Well now I’m getting excited.

Sooooo guess what?!? I have new apparel! A few people have been asking about my apparel and I finally have new stuff for you!! So exciting. I have headbands, tanks, tshirts, long sleeve shirts, and slouchy sweatshirts. AND multiple colors!! Be sure to check them out on WOD Love! Then you can wear them cool places, like the gym, or the mall, or TO THE GAMES. That would be so cool! Okbye.

Oh, Hi! I’m Juli.

I’m a food hoarder. And a really bad dancer. If you don’t know me well, you will probably not understand my humor. Therefore, I apologize ahead of time. Thanks for listening to my ramblings of my ever-changing life and trusting my kitchen mishaps. Your trust in me is appreciated.

  1. #1. This salad looks DELISH.. I just got a gigantic watermelon, so great timing on your part 🙂 you are awesome.

    #2. New apparel?!! YAY!

  2. I am SO excited about his recipe! I have chocolate mint taking over my herb garden and have been too lazy to search through recipes to find out what the H.E. double hockey sticks to us it in. 🙂 Thanks you are the BEST!

  3. Habits (feeling bad about stuff, beating yourself up) are hard to break, harder perhaps than creating new habits. Hang in there.

Love watermelon – I pair it with basil leaves, freshly picked from plant on my porch – yum!

  4. Love the recipe- I’ve been dying to make a watermelon salad. I can totally understand the running form issues, I’ve worked for about a year to keep my knees from completely collapsing in, and it is JUST getting better. Keep at it! You’ll figure out a sneaker/stretching/strengthening combination that improves your ankle/hip stability!

  5. Sooooo awesome! Can’t wait to try this one. My new backyard has a huge crop of mint. Not just for my iced tea any more. Thanks!

  6. Ha omg my ankles and hips are messed up too. I have arthritis in my ankles so I guess running isn’t the best thing for me but anyway. Can’t afford a pedi this summer and literally have spikes on my heels! I miss mad spots shaving too!

  7. I’m sure you’ve heard this – but it sounds like your shoes may be too small. For running, I have to go up a size and half [YIKES] Used to only go up one size, but still experienced toenail nasties and numb feet so a friend advised I go up another half size. Boom, all better. Hope you find what works for you soon 🙂

  8. Sorry if this comes across as judgmental, but kind of tying in to yesterday’s post, if you don’t like running AND you have gimpy hip and ankle joints AND it’s causing you actual pain, why do it? I am in my early 30s and the difference between how my body recovered when I was 25 and how my body recovers now is HUGE. Trust me when I say that shit only gets worse. Again, I don’t want to sound judgmental but I’m a huge fan of yours and it sounds like you’re setting yourself up for injury by pushing your body too hard. I speak from experience!

  9. Great looking salad and just the sort of recipe I like….quick and easy!

Have fun camping and don’t forget the mosquito repellent.

  10. Yup, definitely need bigger shoes! Find a really good running store and get fitted. They can watch how you run and find a good shoe that works for you. A good running shoe makes a world of difference! You may also benefit from orthotics (I know, such an “old” person thing) if anything at least try super feet insoles

  11. if youre having problems with your spin shoes/an ankle thats funky, go into a bike shop that sells specialized bikes in your area, and they carry shims to go under your insole that can improve your ankle alignment on your bike! I have them in my bike shoes and it’s made a big diff for my shittay ankles

  12. Juli,
About your post yesterday – hang in there. Learning how to accept yourself as you are is a life long thing. Maybe it could help to think about yourself one year from now, or five years from now, and think about what you want to look back on – what would you like to see in your life – and then go for that. And, whenever I overeat (like I’m doing right now because I’m stressed about a big move for my family)… I feel rotten, both physically and psychologically. But, the point is, I don’t think I know any woman who doesn’t struggle with her body image at some point. I guess I’m trying to learn to be really grateful for my health and that I can move and eat and enjoy food, and not worry too much about the rest. The only one who is looking at me critically is myself. I don’t want to be shallow and thinking about myself and what I look like all the time. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to make someone else’s life a bit brighter because I was too busy complaining about how I look/feel. Easier said than done – that’s for sure. But, when I stop looking in the mirror and start looking at everyone around me, and just agree to accept myself, I take a step in the right direction. I love your blog Juli and your recipes are absolutely fantastic. Keep on keeping on. You inspire many people!

  13. Can’t wait to make this! Got a similar version of this recipe in my CSA box yesterday…along with a massive watermelon. Nom-nom. Looks perfect for our 106* weather today!

  14. I went camping last weekend…on the lake. I live 15 minutes from a beautiful lake 🙂 it was fanfreakingtastic! I hope you enjoy your trip, I grew up camping on the lake and I’m passing it on to my kids. I’ve always camped in a tent though. The kids and the husband want a camper. I’m opposed…”glamping” is just not the same :/ anywho…I ate like complete shit the whole weekend because its just a pain in the ass eating paleo on a camping trip! On the downside, I’ve felt like crap all week and I’m just now recovering. Thank goodness I’ll have some down time at the pool with friends this weekend. 🙂 I’ll be adding this recipe to the menu for tomorrow’s festivities!

  15. For your running woes…..go to a specialty running store, get fitted for the right type of shoe for your feet (probably a size bigger than normal), be prepared to spend a lot of money, but then you know what kind of shoe you really need and it usually makes all the different. After that, search online for last year’s model of the same shoe and you are golden! I lost all my toe nails before doing this and haven’t lost one since (gross, I know – but now my feet are pretty). If you have already done this, I’m no help 🙂

  16. I have a bad back and bad hips (loose ligaments that let my hips slip out of joint which is super fun!) If you haven’t done it PLEASE go see a physical therapist. It literally changed my life. He taught me exercises to keep my alignment and how to recognize when I was slipping out of alignment. My back used to go out every 6 months and I missed my best friend’s wedding and I was living in constant pain. Now it’s been a few years since my back went out and I even went through an entire pregnancy with no issues.

  17. Just received your PaleOMG cookbook as a gift from my best friend and falling in love with all of the delicious recipes!!! I recently adopted a paleo diet in hopes that it will help me overcome the many struggles I’ve been enduring as a newly diagnosed Celiac. This blog has been a Godsend! Thanks for writing. 🙂

  18. My lower back is borked pretty badly from falling off a horse as a teenager. I have to ride a recumbent bike… and it works great! If you’re having issues like that then I’d say get creative and take the strain off the bits of your body that are hurting you.

  19. Summer salads…..ooooo how I miss them, we’re in the middle of winter in Australia so it’s all warming foods right now 😉

  20. I’m a pretty hairy beast. Always miss a spot or five!

I just made this salad and its in the fridge awaiting dinner. it smells good!!

  21. Vibram Fivefingers! I swear by them. Feels funny at first but you get used to the toe instead of heal strike.Just start slow in the beginning, like using them 15 mins at a time because you’ll use more muscles & use them differently. This recipe looks awesome such an interesting combo can’t wait to try it!

  22. I use KT tape on my ankles and knees. Its pretty much a necessity at the moment when I run but it also helps during/after a WOD. According to my chiropractor, I have really short/tight hip muscles so it throws my alignment off and puts a lot of pressure on my lower half. The KT tape seems to help with stability and sort of reduces the strain on my lower joints which hopefully will only be necessary until we get my hips where they should be. Maybe you need to look into what’s causing the problem so you can better fix it rather than risking additional damage.

  23. Check out chirunning.com. It has seriously changed my running experience 100% for the better and has reduced my instances of injuries.

  24. Just made this SO delicious! I ended up dicing 3 cups of watermelon, but it was fine.
4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup, which is a bit easier for measuring.
But I’d cut that back. I diced the mint fairly fine, but there is just so much of it that the texture gets overwhelming. I’d describe it as fuzzy construction paper. 😉 Not yummy.
But mint has a powerful flavor, so I’m hoping cutting it in half will still impart the flavor without the icky texture.

  25. Quadrupled this and took it to a 4th of July party yesterday. I tell you, I should have set some aside, because I was REALLY looking forward to having some for breakfast. But those jerks (er, friends) ate it all! Shared the recipe link to your site with about a dozen people, so hopefully you’ll get more followers and more people eating the paleo way.

  26. Try a Shellac/gel pedicure…you won’t need another one for a month, I don’t care how hard you run or how small your shoes apparently are…that sh*t won’t BUDGE!

  27. Serious, go see a foot doctor, a Podiatrist. That’s an easy fix, all you probably need are orthotics, that stopped my ankles rolling in and subsequent knee issues. Yeah sure good shoes and all that, but if your foot/ankle pronates no good shoe will help/correct that.

  28. Thanks for this recipe. Though I changed it up a bit.. I used a little less mint, and I used half balsamic and half apple cider vinegar. Such a killer salad. I will be making this again this summer.

  29. I typically don’t run unless something scary is chasing me…..or there’s chocolate involved….so I’m not much help there, but I do hop you’ve gotten/are getting better.

Just wanted to say thanks for this amazing recipe. I made it last week just for me and practically inhaled it whole. I made it again for a cookout this past weekend and decided to tweak it a bit and add some fresh lime juice and lime zest. Lo and behold, it was dubbed Watermelon Mojito Salad! Amazingly good! Thanks! =)
