Good morning!!! How you feeling after the weekend? We had a wedding up in Grand Lake…where it was raining most of the time. So that meant a lot of drinking occurred. Which means I’m not feeling 100% today. But after wake surfing in 60 degree weather and pounding lots of water, I was able to rid myself of most of my hangover.
And today I will be doing the same. I know, based on everyone in my morning CrossFit classes, that Mondays can be tough and make you feel like you’re never going to have your sh*t together after a destructive weekend. BUT if you are able to keep the pattern of hitting the gym after a tough weekend, the more likely you’ll make better and better decisions over the weekend.
I used to drink pretty heavily and eat pretty sh*tty on the weekends, but the more I did this, the more I noticed that my progress both physically and mentally diminish every week. And then I was stuck every week trying to make up for my bad decisions. So one day, I decided to knock that sh*t off. Instead of being crazy strict Monday-Friday, I allowed myself more wiggle room with some gluten free bread or more starchy carbohydrates like potatoes…and by the weekend, I was yearning for a certain food or drink. So now I’m able to eat pretty healthy most of the time and still enjoy some cocktails and cake at a wedding, without feeling like total sh*t the next day. Because I changed my viewpoint on what a healthy diet and lifestyle looked like, I no longer was yo-yo dieting. I still enjoy my life, but I balance it out. That meant champagne, a gluten free sandwich, and even a frozen margarita over the weekend, all without binging and hating myself on Monday. Now this Monday, I just get back to my normal eating, normal workout routine, and normal sleep cycle and I’m back on track.
Have you found a balance that works for you yet or are you still doing the yo-yo? If you’ve always thought super strict was the best option for you but you continue to fall off the wagon…maybe it’s time to view a healthy lifestyle in a different way. I say all this because I’ve been there. I’ve been super restrictive and I’ve been more balanced, and I can tell you, the balance has been so helpful in my own lifestyle. Just a little tidbit from JB today. Continue to look at health in different ways to find what works for you! And go get after your Monday workout!! Here’s a peek at what I did last week!

JULI!
You’re seriously the bomb. In a world full of negativity, where people hide behind their keyboards and computer screens, you continue to radiate beauty, positivity, and strength! You’re a kick-ass boss lady! Thanks for always keeping it real and continuing to share your experiences with us 🙂
thank you so much, claire!!
nope, no professional photographer with me
I am so grateful for your balanced approach to wellness. It is so refreshing! Your post about incorporating barre workouts and waiting to see how your body reacts resonated with me so much. It’s so easy for me to fall into “analysis paralysis” and not try something new just because I’m not certain it’s the “perfect” program for me that will give me the exact results I’m wanting. You’ve helped me realize that health and fitness is fluid and what works in one season of life may not work in other seasons. I feel more confident trying new things, evaluating how they makes me feel, and redirecting course if need be! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this community.
I’ve read in your posts that when you were first focusing on your skin, you cut eggs and nuts. After tracking my food, I believe these foods may be triggers for my rosacea and I’m going to give it a go without them for a month or two! I’ll be combing through your website and cookbook today for some recipe inspiration, but I would love to hear any go-to breakfasts you ate during your initial switch, as hard boiled eggs and Lara Bars have been staples for me!
my new go to meal for breakfast is part of a baked sweet potato, arugula and a sausage (whatever clean brand i can find!)
Just sharing some of my thoughts! I feel like at crossfit I’ve been doing a TON of strict HSPU and pull ups lately! Ugh, I can finally do them but they are awful. Strict pull ups I’ve been able to do for about 4 years now, but the HSPU just came to me and I think they are super super hard!!! I guess that’s what makes crossfit addicting. There’s always a new skill to master…
I wish people would quit doing those strict ring HSPU’s though.
Who could ever afford to do that/how awkward would that be? hahaha!
I have been weighing my food for the past 9 months and I decided after this weekend I wasnt going to do it anymore! It has literally taken over my life where I didnt want to go out or even do things with my family because I couldnt bring the food scale with me. I have come to the realization that I need to be a little more flexible with my eating. I know what is good and bad and how much of certain things my body needs for fuel every day. I am already feeling anxious, but just reading this and seeing how far you have come with your food and workout habits gives me some encouragement 🙂 Thanks Juli!
I continuously struggled with balance. I have been strict on my diet, which leads to small dosage of overindulging. I always admire how you balanced food. I wanted to ask, how do you find gluten free restaurants when you’re traveling? And do recommend gluten free diet is you’re not sensitive to gluten?
I was yo-yo dieting for years. Starting every monday saying I’m never eating this ever again. But now I am working on balance, I usually allow myself a few treats each week and have noticed my cravings diminish and I don’t totally waste my diet away on the weekend. AND those NIKE’s are so cute. I really need a new pair and have been eying the Flyknits for awhile not.
it’s amazing how your body can react when you treat it the right way!
Hi Juli. Thanks for keeping it real. I think part of the problem is there is so much incorrect information in the media and people have no idea what is healthy and what is not. I just have to pick up a copy of “Shape” magazine in the salon to see it… the morons who write those articles really have no clue.
For me, balance has come from eating real food, mostly paleo. I don’t count calories or macros and just eat until my body tells me it’s had enough. I eat a lot of healthy fats and enjoy some good quality dark chocolate and a coffee each day. All of this keeps me satisfied and I don’t feel the need to overindulge when I do have dessert, etc.
I think if you are strict and not eating foods that provide satiety (eg. if you are on a low fat diet) your body isn’t getting what it needs and that is part of the reason why people overdo it.
You’re doing a great job with this blog. Keep it up.
