Good morning, from Palm Springs, CA!!! I’m enjoying every last bit of sunshine here before I head back to normal fall life in Colorado. These past two weeks have been super busy and it has thrown my workout and food routine off, but I’ve still kept it together rather well. Last week I was just getting back from a girls trip to Portland and then after 4 days home, I hopped back on a plane but this time with my sister in law, jet setting to Cali. That means in the past 2 weeks, I’ve had lots of cocktails, meals at restaurants and no regular workouts in my gym. But I’ve still made it work!

Doing a couple bodyweight workouts while I was out of town was a great way to keep my ish together while not feeling like I HAD to workout on vacation. When you know a workout can be done anywhere and it can be done in under 30 minutes, it’s pretty hard to say no to. Sure, I didn’t workout my hardest while I was on vacation, but I got moving! And that’s all that really mattered to me.

The thing about vacations is they come and go. We may have times that we get to travel a lot and we may have times that we get to travel little. But if we are able to keep some sort of normal workout and food schedule on a regular basis, the more likely we will bounce back once we get back from those fun times. Because I’ve been working out an average of 5 days per week for the past 6+ years, I don’t notice the days I take off or the different food choices I make while on vacation. Because of sticking to eating healthy and working out 95% of the time at home, I’m able to indulge in life without feeling guilty. Sure, I’m ready to get back to my normal routine in the gym and at home, but I’m not going home feeling bad for the nightly sangria I had in Palm Springs or the hours spent at the pool instead of working out.

If you’re a person who feels guilty after coming back from vacation, well I truly hope you steer clear of that feeling moving forward. Figure out what makes you feel that guilt and change some of those habits. Is it because you overindulge in alcohol? Well cut some of that back! Is it because you don’t workout as much? Well plan some workouts ahead of time, figure out if you hotel will have a gym, and schedule those workouts in before you even leave your home! Is it because you make poor meal decisions? Check out restaurants beforehand to know what they have to offer, pack snacks with you so you aren’t starving when you get to the restaurant, and just know that it’s ok to eat some different kinds of food sometimes and really explore what the world has to offer. You create your own destiny, you create your own feelings, and you decide how you are going to feel later on! It’s all about working hard, planning and enjoy the moment! You can do this, you have control!

Great post. Yeah, I’m similar to you. We are going on vacation next month for a couple of weeks. We will be staying in a house and I might not be able to workout outside given the weather. But…. I’ve already found a gym within a couple of miles I can use when I want to workout in the mornings. I also plan on doing a lot of walking as it’s a great way to see a new city and I love it. I normally travel with a “greens” drink and have that first thing in the morning to get some extra nutrition in my diet. I like to try new foods when I travel but don’t overdo it, and try to eat vegetables when I can. When I travel domestically in the US we try to get to a Whole Foods on the first or second day to buy some healthy snacks and green juice for the hotel room. Just a couple of things that help me feel good when on vacation.

Linda, sports bras are pretty common where I live in the States.

Enjoyed this post! Very balanced. Travelling is an awesome experience and enjoying the local culture and foods is a big part of that. As you have demonstrated we can still enjoy these things without going overboard so that there is no reason to feel guilty. I love the short workouts you have provided! I always travel with my skipping rope and couple of bands to give me options to create short circuit workouts that make me feel good without taking a lot of time or the need for a lot of equipment. Thanks again for sharing your strategies. Very encouraging!

great advice about working out while on vacation, and especially about enjoying your play time without guilt. it doesn’t matter if the workouts are as tough or as long as the ones you do at home; the important thing, like you said, is just to get moving & do something!

I came on holiday to China with the best intentions of doing some yoga every day and running regularly. And the I got here and realised that gyms are non-existent, hotel rooms are tiny (there are 3 of us sharing rooms and one place we could only just fit our packs in!), the thought of putting your hands or face anywhere near the ground is enough to make you gag, and the streets are not made for running (although I would star in many many photos and videos if I tried it!)

So I’ve just tried to walk as much as possible every day, stop eating when I’m done, and make a plan for when I get home. Sometimes that’s the best you can do!

Your Weekly Workout posts are always super inspiring – I just need to put it in to action!
