If you haven’t been following along recently, I just started a podcast a few weeks ago where I’ve been talking food, fitness and some life stories. And one of the main things I’ve been seeing is questions regarding starting at a gym and being intimidated to take the first step. I was in that same space and feeling that same way about 7 years ago. I hated going to the gym, I hated feeling like I didn’t know what I was doing, and I hated feeling like people were judging me as soon as I walked in. But that feeling is extremely common with anyone who is just getting into exercise or even just trying a different workout. Intimidation is normal. Feeling like you don’t know what you’re doing is normal. But it shouldn’t hold you back.
Doing something new, conquering the unknown, and feeling uncomfortable is normal when it comes to life. Think about starting a new job or having your first child or signing up for a marathon. We do sh*t every day that scares us and makes us question why we even signed up for it. But those chances lead to experiences and lead to bettering ourselves in the long run. And that’s what you do every day you walk into a gym: you become better than yesterday. Sure, it can be scary and intimidating at first, but if you find a gym that you feel comfortable and welcomed at, you’ll never feel the regret of walking into a gym. The thing that kept me going back to CrossFit was the many relationships I built over time, no matter what gym I went to. I’ve been at the same gym for over 5 years now because this gym makes me feel comfortable, always makes me smile or laugh, and constantly challenges me. Find that gym. If you haven’t found it yet, don’t give up, try a new one. You deserve to find a gym that makes you comfortable and confident, so never give up on that search! Don’t let intimidation hold you back, let it push you forward!
And before I let you go, this week on my podcast, I’ll be answering whatever random questions you have. Whether that are gym related, food related, about relationships, clothes – honestly whatever questions you have, I want to answer them! This podcast will be all about random stuff so please leave your questions here or on my social media so I can answer them! Can’t wait to hear what questions you guys have!

I don’t track my food daily but every couple of months, I’ll track a day or two worth of food to make sure I’m eating enough protein or make sure I’m getting enough calories in general. I find that when I eat gluten free (I don’t eat rice or gluten free bread, etc), I barely eat any carbs. I know this can be detrimental to weight loss. I’m wondering if you have any suggestions? I know everyone thrives differently on carbs but I feel like I’m so squishy even though I’m 90% paleo!
Another question– could you discuss digestion issues? I find that when I am eating 100% paleo, that I suffer from GI issues and it never seems to go away until I include a slice of bread with breakfast or maybe have a little rice. Did you suffer from that too?
i’ve never had that issue. maybe your body is craving more carbohydrates though? i would never recommend people to eat a piece of regular bread, but i would definitely tell them to listen to their body because it may be asking for more carbs.
Juli, you’ve talked about how you will indulge in sweets but only have a small amount or a couple bites. This is a skill/habit I am trying to hone and would love to know any strategies or tips you have.
Me too!! She’s like a mystical unicorn or something as soon as I get started…
Juli, I am so excited for your upcoming random questions podcast. I’d love to hear you answer this question…
How do you stick to paleo in social settings especially considering all the holiday parties that will be coming up? I find those poisonous platters of cookies SOOO TEMPTING. When I am home, sticking to paleo is cake (well, not really, but you get the idea). I always find myself struggling when we are at other people’s homes and they don’t eat things that are remotely paleo. I struggle either because the food isn’t tempting and I really want to eat it or because I feel like it is rude to say I can’t eat the food they served me. What do you do to combat those situations???
Hi There! Love your site, I’ve been following along for awhile now, but first time commenting. I’ve been craving a ‘chicken pot pie’ lately now that the weather is cooling down. Any ideas for a paleo version recipe?
Thank you!
i don’t have a version for one yet, but i’m sure there are other recipes out there!
Hey there! I’ve been mostly Paleo for 2 years now. I still find that there are foods/spices that don’t agree with me at all. I can’t seem to pinpoint what they are though. I just wondered how you figured out which foods agree with your system & which don’t! I don’t know if the nuts I ate yesterday caused my break out or my hormones this month! I feel like I’m constantly playing detective & it makes me wanna throw in the towel some days!
have you done the bulletproof coffee thing? normally i drink coffee black, but when i’m feeling frisky i’ll throw a little almond milk in there. but now i’m considering going all for cream or the bulletproof route. what have you tried?
yeah i’ve had bulletproof coffee many times, but i just don’t make it a daily thing because it’s just not my thing. but i put probably a teaspoon of heavy cream in my coffee every morning because i do fine with dairy. that’s just what i prefer!
A question for your random podcast – how do you get out of a funk? What strategies do you use? Whether it be a workout funk, a relationship funk, a food funk, a work funk or just an I hate the world funk? Any tips would be awesome.
Hi Juli! I am a total CrossFit noob so I’m hoping you can clear something up for me. What do the numbers in parenthesis mean in your CF workouts (ex. 10 Burpee Box Jumps (30/24))? I am a rock climber and most of my training is climbing-specific but I like to mix in a few CF workouts at home each week, and I have no idea what this means. Thanks!
that is the height of the box for men/women. so the men’s height on box jumps is 30 inches and women is 24 inches! same thing with other numbers when it comes to weights or distances on the rower or bike!
I’d love to hear you chat about how you made your blog/lifestyle into a legit business!
I have a fashion question and a food question.
Fashion – Do you do the whole capsule wardrobe thing I’m seeing all over Pinterest? Im curious bc I don’t have a lot of extra money for clothing!
Food – You’re attending a holiday meal with lots of non-paleo food. Do you politely turn down most of the sides or go for fit because it’s a few meals here and there? What do you say when someone comments on skipping out on junky holiday food?
