I swear, this is my last selfie. Maybe ever. But when you are on the road for almost 2 weeks by yourself, yourself is sometimes your only friend. That sounds totally sad, doesn’t it? But it’s the truth, so you better smile back at your friend in the mirror or you’ll be real alone.
What the hell am I even talking about?
So guess what? I JUST got back home to Colorado Saturday night, worked out Sunday morning, did laundry, grabbed some groceries, repacked, and worked at the gym early this morning before I’m off to LA today. I’m filming a segment with Hallmark Home and Family TV, sharing a recipe from my newest cookbook Juli Bauer’s Paleo Cookbook, so I’ll only be in LA until tomorrow night and then back home around midnight. BUT THEN I’m off to Mexico before I head out on the second leg of book tour. Breathe. But you know what is killing me just a little bit inside? Ree Drummond from The Pioneer Woman is filming THE DAY BEFORE ME. I’m missing her by one day. One. She’s the only person I truly enjoy watching on the Food Network and I won’t even get to meet her. Someday, my friend, someday.
Do you know what all this traveling means for you? LOTS of travel workouts. As you’ll see below, all the workouts in this post were workouts I did in hotel gyms while on the road for the first leg of my book tour. All the gyms I went to had at least dumbbells, but I made sure to do at least 1 body weight workout for you people who want that kind! I’m thinking that even after I stop traveling, I’m going to share at least one travel workout in each Weekly Workouts post since I know so many of you have to travel for work! Hope you like that little new tidbit!
Sunday – After having my signing on Friday in Boston, then spending my entire Saturday hanging out with my fiancé, I worked all day Sunday on an upcoming project. So once I got back to the hotel in the evening, I was ready to do all kinds of stuff in the gym since I hadn’t worked out in a few days.
10 minutes walking unhill at 6% grade
Then 5 rounds:
15 dumbbell thrusters and 15 burpees
Then 3 sets of:
15 swiss ball pass thrus and 20 lunges holding dumbbells
And 3 sets of:
40 russian twists with med ball
12 dumbbell tricep kickbacks
12 dumbbell bicep curls
Monday – Travel day to New York then pretty much straight to a book signing then a late dinner!
Tuesday – Travel day to Pittsburgh where I ate an early dinner then closed all the blinds, put down the black out curtains, and passed up probably around 7:30pm.
Wednesday – Pittsburgh workout then another book signing in the town of Sewickley. Maybe one of my new favorite towns ever. If I liked kids, I would totally want to raise a family there, it was so adorable.
10 minutes walking uphill at 6% grade
Then 20 minute AMRAP:
10 bulgarian split squats holding a 15# KB in each hand (each leg)
12 KB snatches with 25# KB (each arm)
10 burpees
20 leg raises holding weight above head toward ceiling
Thursday – Travel day to Chicago then straight to the gym. It’s amazing how exhausting travel can feel sometimes, when you’re seriously doing nothing. All you do is walk, sit, sit some more, sleep terribly with your mouth open to the disgusting airplane air, then get a rental car and drive to your new destination. But it’s seriously exhausting. If you’re ever doing this, don’t sit down. Go straight to the gym because then you won’t be able to come up with excuses since you’re already in the gym. That’s exactly what I did!
3 rounds:
20 lunges holding dumbbells doing a curl at the bottom of each lunge and 15 burpees
Then 3 rounds:
20 stiff leg deadlift with dumbbells
20 alternating weighted step ups with dumbbells
And 3 rounds:
12 dumbbell hang clean into a thruster
20 knees in and out while seated on bench
Friday – Chicago workout with no equipment needed then had my last book signing for the first leg of book tour!
3 rounds of:
2 minutes hand release push ups
2 minutes air squats
2 minutes burpees
2 minutes jumping lunges
2 minutes v-ups
2 minutes rest
Saturday – Travel day back HOOOOOME and ready to welcome me was the best guy ever (the fiancé was on his bachelor party!). He couldn’t stop kissing, it was too much. I slept on the couch with him that night, I was just so happy to snuggle with him. Man I love that dog.
ALSO, I had a handful of fun packages waiting for me like swimsuits for Mexico and navy booties for fall, but I opened the best package of all right away: Vanessa Bajaras Clean Eating with a Dirty Mind. The book is truly OUT.OF.CONTROL. The beauty, the recipes, the creativity. Unlike anything out there, especially unlike any dessert book out there. I’m in shock. Right away I made her pumpkin bread, but made it into muffins and can I just tell you something, it was the best pumpkin bread I’ve ever effing had. Ever. Go get this book, it comes out in just over a week!! PS, we head out on book tour together soon, so make sure to come visit us both!
I just want to let you know how awesome your new book is! I really like your other, but I love this one! I’ve had it about a week and have made 6 recipes already! I had a ‘Cuban’ dinner party w/only your recipes (and was the first time making them), everyone loved the food!
yayyyy thank you so much!! so glad you love it!
Bahah, that picture at the end of you and Jackson kills me – I love how he’s looking right at the camera! <3
Thanks for the work-outs, Juli! I have to travel for over 100 days out of the year for my job, and these all gave me some new inspiration! Also, LOVE the book!! Just made the Teriyaki wings and my husband said it was the best meal I’ve ever made ????
that’s insanity!! i don’t know how you do it and stay sane!
Hi Juli, just got your book in the mail Saturday, had such a busy weekend it sat on my dresser until last night when I could have some time to myself and enjoy it. Congrats. Truly a beautiful cookbook. Can’t wait to try some of the recipes. Jackson is the bomb.
juli, you look amazing! i think we all have to ask what you’re doing differently since as long as we’ve followed you you’ve always eaten paleo and done crossfit – but recently you have leaned out and look even more awesome. do you have tips to share?
love your website and your cookbooks. you are so fun!
the only thing I’m doing differently nowadays is lifting less. i don’t go near as heavy as i used to when i was competing in crossfit. i talk about it here in this post: https://paleomg.com/weekly-workouts-38/
Love hearing that and seeing your results as you changed the way you work out. My coach always tells me “girls won’t get big, so you can lift heavy.” But I know my body and I know it feels better when I lift lighter – but still challenge myself.
Thank you!
lol tell him to look at the crossfit games. all those girls have gotten bigger so they are able to lift more. that’s just life. but those girls goals are strength so that makes sense for them. do what makes sense for you, you know your body way better than anyone else
Ahh I grew up in Sewickley! So nice to see my tiny hometown get some blog love 🙂 I hope you enjoyed it!
Julie, I was so bummed I could not go to the NYC part of your book tour! I wasn’t feeling great and went home right after work because I wasn’t sure how I’d be if I waited and took the subway etc etc etc. I was going to buy the book there but now I’m going to order it from Amazon. Looks like the book tour is a success! I can’t wait to open your book and start cooking. Enjoy!
dang, wish i could have met you, but i totally get it!! hope you love the book!
