I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.

Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.

It’s like a fun house up in here.

So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.

Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.

Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star

4.9 from 32 reviews

  • Yield: 2-4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the “tortillas”

For the shredded pork

  • 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • salt, to taste

For the toppings

  • 56 strips of bacon
  • 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
  • 23 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
  • chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
  2. Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
  3. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  4. When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
  5. Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
  6. Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
  7. Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
  8. Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
  9. Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
  10. Happy times.

hi, i just wanted to tell you that i think i love you. i hate eggs, and everyone’s all like “OMG eggs for breakfast YAY” and that makes me want to vomit in a trash can. but i’m totally on board with tacos for breakfast.

also i have nasty ass acne too – i can’t get rid of it, but i think that has something to do with the fact that i eat grossly and drink soda. don’t judge me, i just found out about paleo TODAY.

    Hi Julie,

Just stumbled across your blog as I discovered I have a shit-ton of food intolerances and am slowly eliminating dairy and grains – looking for recipes.

That being said I have a histamine and fructose issue which means a lot of these recipes are still off limits for me. Just to let you know – I have had acne problems on my chin, which turns out is actually a type of rosacea – essentially hives from food. It seems to break out worst with fructose. My naturopath also said that acne around the jawline is associated to the liver. So, may look / into any foods that could be causing issue there? I’ve seen an improvement on mine with limiting sugar, particularly fructose, particularly mid month (ovulation).

Do you find that you have any of the same problems with almond meal / flour that you would with wheat? I’m hesitant for me to try the coconut flour because of sugar…

Your thoughts are fantastic, very happy to have stumbled across this. I have found a few things I can try so far. Yea breakfast meatloaf and pumpkin french toast (modified).

I didn’t read all the comments; so this may be a repeat. My two cents.
    1. You probably have an overgrowth of yeast (candida). The chin/jaw cystic acne is a tell-tale sign.
    2. Try cutting out pork (I know..I know. It sounds crazy and traumatizing, but I think you’ll be suprised.) You can always add it back and do an experiment. If you’re an O blood type especially, pork and coconut will cause hormone surges and yeast overgrowth that will zap your energy, make you puffy/bloaty/bulky, and major skin issues. Sorry. 🙁

Hey! Don’t know if you’ve already found something to work for your acne or not… But if not, might I suggest Mary Kay’s Velocity line. It’s a formula that helps combat acne, say in a teen – but it works for adults as well.

I’m an independent consultant for Mary Kay, and I posted my website where you can find the cleanser and moisturizer, so help yourself!

I’ve also heard that Coconut oil helps. It has healing properties in it that help skin.. Good luck!

I stumbled upon your site, then stumbled upon this post. Ironically, I went through the same thing my entire life until this time last year. I tried proactive and b/c together which helped, but cut those out after realizing another health issue crop up and got sick of “symptom fixes” and started going all natural to get to the root of my issues. ACNE: cut out pill and funny enough, proactive stopped working; tried everything “natural” under the sun as an external treatment, no go; tried oil wash, no go; finally did in depth research, 6 months worth. records and all. what did I find? luteal phase defect. the last phase before my period was practically non-existent. treatment? VITEX SUPPLEMENTS. it is a phyto-estrogen, totally natural. it can also up your chance of getting preggo though, so be careful! It helped me, until I got pregnant (opps. yep, vitex). then my hormones “reset”, and now 6 months post-partum I get MAYBE 1-2 zits.

One more acne shout out. I get cystic acne on occasion – not as much as I used to – (the only perk of being mid-40’s :). I have recently found Mario Badescu skin care products. Super reasonable prices. It’s online or at other specialty shops such as Ulta. There’s one called Drying Lotion. It’s clear liquid with pink sediment. DON’T mix it. Just dip a q-tip into the pink sediment and dab it on the cystic acne before bed. It is absolutely amazing how it stops them in their tracks. Now this is for acne as it is starting. They do have other products to prevent acne but I am not well versed in those. I personally use the Drying Lotion as soon as I feel a painful bump and by morning it is not painful nor is it red. Usually gone before another nightfall but if it’s there at all, I’ll dab it again and next day no trace. Truly amazing stuff. ~I had same prob: try pink Himalayan salt. Put a teaspoon in a 16 oz glass of water and chug it twice per day. It’s best right when you wake up or before you work out hard.
~Pink salt has incredible health benefits/loaded with vitamins and minerals and something in the formula also helps acne.
~Try not to overscrub. My derm told me I was overdoing it. She pulled me back, and made me buy dove/sensitive skin bar soap so my skin could rebalance itself. It worked!

I didn’t read all the comments. But I am a huge believer of oil pulling 1st thing in the morning. If you haven’t heard of it you should totally look it up. I suffered from cystic acne and with diet change and oil pulling I now have beautiful healthy skin.

  10. Ann Marie says:

I have tried to tell my daughter about the solution to her acne problem but it has fallen on deaf ears. The problem is dairy products and the casein that is found in them. Our bodies cannot digest ot properly and on the end develops an immunity against it. It is proven that many diseases are directly caused by the process called “leaky gut”. Please watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9XuYRoqo1A, with Walter Veith, and you will understand why and how and all of the problems caused by the consumption of dairy, Did you know that humans are the only species to consume milk after they are weaned from the mother? There is a reason that we aren’t supposed to consume it after we are babies and it is genetically hardwired in each of us. Please take the time to watch the video and give yourself a fasting period from dairy. You will be amazed.
