I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.

Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.

It’s like a fun house up in here.

So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.

Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.

Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star

4.9 from 32 reviews

  • Yield: 2-4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the “tortillas”

For the shredded pork

  • 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • salt, to taste

For the toppings

  • 56 strips of bacon
  • 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
  • 23 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
  • chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
  2. Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
  3. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  4. When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
  5. Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
  6. Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
  7. Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
  8. Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
  9. Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
  10. Happy times.

I’m sure you already tried this,… but have you tried to eliminate dairy just to see if you’re reacting to something? I had the same issue a few years ago and years and years of super sensitive (HORMONAL) skin and a nutritionalist asked me to just give a try… did I mention that I also had super T-zone oily skin? well, my acne vanished within 3 weeks and I learned that in actuality… I have since learned that I really have super dry skin and now can damned near put lard on my skin and not break out… but so much as a spoonfull of ice cream and I’ll have huge breakouts over night… and they don’t like to go way either… bites hard. I now use oil to clean my skin and like you, I can be a bit critical, but I’ve gotta say… my skin looks better now at 36, than it ever did through my 20s… kinda sad, but I guess it’s a case of ‘better late than never’… oh, and the ‘whiter and wetter’ the dairy the more severely I react…

What can it hurt? Plus, it’s paleo and chemical free… oh and butter gets me, too… of course, this is all based on whether or not dairy is even in your life… let’s get real… you write a Paleo food blog! Good luck!!!

Hey, I just happened across this as I was looking for a recipe and I’ll say this: I was totally in the same boat as you with the cystic acne and all. I always attributed it to hormones and stress. It seemed to be related to my cycle, or to stressful life events so I couldn’t do much about it. I have tried creams, prescriptions, non-prescription topicals, everything!!
I’m also a Registered Dietitian (no, not the stupid kind) and I 100% believe everything leads back to diet in the end. everything I came across said dairy elimination for acne. I’ve been Paleo for over 5 years but never strict Paleo in terms of total dairy elimination for more than a couple days.
I had exhausted all other options so I figured ‘Hey it’s prob not gonna work, but what will I lose if I give it 30 days?’

5 days into complete dairy elimination and my face was clear. CLEAR. Here’s the kicker, however: It seems that ALL dairy derivatives set my acne off again, including but not limited to whey protein, goat dairy/cow dairy, organic or not, pasteurized or unpasteurized. Doesn’t matter. The whey protein was probably the hardest to wrap my mind around and something that many people don’t consider when going STRICT paleo because it does have casein and no matter how pure, has some carry over of naturally occurring hormones from the animal.

Just a suggestion, if you haven’t already tried it, but that was what worked for me. love your recipes 🙂

Acne sucks…I’m 30 and still battling it, pretty sure I’ll be like 90 on my death bed and still be broken out! The Eminence line has helped but it is too damned expensive! I’m back on Neutrogena’s kit. Do you do the bare minerals makeup? Its the only makeup that doesn’t break me out worse and doesn’t seem to rub off as bad. My oily skin has several advantages 1. I never burn, only tan and 2. no stretch marks, anywhere, ever, even with a big overdue baby! 🙂

The Oil Cleansing Method really helped me! I had to change my make up a couple of time too until I found the one that didn’t make me brake out.

I’m at work browsing recipes so I didn’t have time to read the other comments to see if this has been said or not. I had the SAME problems with my acne. I tried everything. By everything I mean, every brand of fancy crap from the fancy counters at the fancy dept stores, Rx meds from the dr’s, ex-strength Pro-active, EVERYTHING. It was cystic, ugly, terribly painful and there was LOTS of it. One day an acne angel graced my path of life and told me a CHEAP and EASY secret. (She’s an esthetician) Evening of primrose oil and Biotion supplements. That is it! Swear to it.Took about 3-4 weeks before I started noticing anything worth gettin’ excited about. I get mine from Trader Joe’s and it is $6.99 for one & $7.99 for the other and they last probably 2 months. I hope you try it because it helps SOOOO much!

Acne was the bane of my existence for 12 long years. I did 2 rounds of chemical peels and my skins finally beautiful! It cost me, but it was less expensive than all of the product lines and prescriptions I’ve tried! Plus now I don’t spend so much money and time on makeup. Bonus! My scarring went down, the redness all over my face cleared up significantly and I don’t have mondo jawline cystic acne anymore 😉

  8. mmccall says:

This may be long overdue but I wanted to let you know that I combined Paleo with FODMAP restrictions and my acne is 90% better.

I did this for 3 months. Plus I do Ultra Flora Plus probiotics and I drink Mountain Valley water which I def believe in.

Please post a comment if you consider the FODMAP for 3 months or so.

  9. jean alfred says:

The acne is often family and joins the fatty skin, it begin with the obstruction from the opening from the hair and sebaceous gland. A horn stopper blocks the opening of the hair, it produces a microcomedon then a microkyste. The bacteria which proliferate in the follicule (propionibacterium acnes) release from the substances which cause the ignition of the microkyste and involve a red button and a white head….
