I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.
Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.
It’s like a fun house up in here.
So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.
Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. I think I’m going to make a dessert for tomorrow’s post. Michelle inspired me. And being that it’s Friday, that means it’s chocolate and wine day.
PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.
Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos
- Yield: 2-4 1x
Ingredients
For the “tortillas”
- 3 eggs, whisked
- ½ cup canned coconut milk
- 2 tablespoonscoconut flour
- pinch of salt
For the shredded pork
- 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- salt, to taste
For the toppings
- 5–6 strips of bacon
- 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
- 2–3 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
- chopped green onions
Instructions
- First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
- Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
- Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
- When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
- Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
- Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
- Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
- Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
- Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
- Happy times.

Hi!! First off, I really love your blog! Secondly, I’m totally new to this paleo diet shenaniganz and your recipes totally help. I’m not starving anymore! And, I think you’re hilarious! Anyway, THANK YOU THANK YOU for the awesome posts, and also, I’m a rep for a skincare line called Image. I have acne myself, and with the use of this AMAZING product line, it’s gotten so much better. Seriously, I used to cry every day because it was so bad. It’s so much better now (not tototally gone, because acne is one of those things that not gone for forever, just better) thanks to this line. I used it before I started working for the company and it truly is awesome sauce. It’s a professional line so you can only get it at spas and dr’s offices, but it’s really affordable and the best part-IT WORKS! I’m not sure what part of the country you’re in, but I’m sure there are spas or dr’s offices that carry it. If you’re interested and are tired of trying over the counter brands that don’t work on acne, please let me know and I’ll help you find it!

Hi, I am surprised I see no mention of the Paleo Autoimmune Protocol for your acne(sorry, if it was already mentioned or tried). As amazing and recipes are, many of the ingredients you use could be an issue for you(eggs, coffee, chocolate, nuts/butters/flours, nightshades, etc). Someone in the comments mentioned healing her leaky gut helped her acne. And following the AIP would essentially help to heal a leaky gut.
I am following a diet for leaky gut and I cry looking at your beautiful recipes because I can’t currently eat many of them! :-(. When I am healed I have a long list to try.
Best of luck to you,
yum yum another winner!! Thanks so much!
This looks amazing I can’t wait to try it tonight. I struggled with cystic acne for years it’s he worst. Everyone is different but eliminating all sugar and any dairy( casein, whey) worked for me. Even paleo natural sugars like maple syrup, honey, even fruit can aggrevate it until you cleanse. Have you tried getting your bloodworm and hormones checked? A good functional medicine doctor can run the appropriate tests for you. Best of luck and thanks for all the incredible recipes!
Made these for dinner tonight and they were bomb diggity. My 5 year old son, who has recently become a picky eater, ate them up and called them “pancake tacos with meat.” Ha. My hubby even liked the “tortillas.” Leftovers will be in a bowl for tomorrow’s lunch. Thanks again for your oh so yummy recipes!
First, I cannot WAIT to try that recipe! Second, I’m right there with you on the acne. My friends used to slightly hate me because I made it through HS without any problems, I’ve made up fro it since turning 30ish. I’m pretty sure mine is hormonal, it started after tubal ligation, as well as a bunch of other hormonal problems. I despise the acne, but am learning to live with it.
Found your blog last week. I was searching for paleo because I started crossfit two months ago at 51. It’s really great, it wasn’t cause I was overweight or out of shape(kinda was), but I needed more structure in my workouts. Anyway, your writing is great your recipes are fantastic and easy for a dumb old man with zero time to follow. And enjoy your new pup.
Ditch the fat. At least cut back.
Maroccan clay works wonders. Ask your local health store. They should have some.
Stop washing your face. Use Rose water or witch hazel on cotton buds instead.
Stop using heave makeup, e.g foundation. Let the skin breath.
Look up ayurveda and vata/kapha/pitta. You might be a kapha.
I’ve been there myself. Took me two-three years to figure out that esxcess intake of fat was causing my already oily skin to break out.
best of luck to you!
Hey JB!
I really liked this recipe…. it was pretty easy to do and tasted really good….. I’ve been trying to find recipes for foods with less spice for my daughter and she loved this.
I bought some tortilla/pancake pans and got pretty good at making the tortillas nice and thin [After a few tries 🙂 ]…… The problem that I noticed was that the tortillas fall apart very easily…. Any suggestions for making the tortillas thin enough so they’re not pancakes but thick enough so the tacos don’t disintegrate in your hands when eating?
Thanks
Moses
add a bit more coconut flour next time to thicken them up!!
I’m a 22 year old female and I also have hormonal cystic acne (all across my jawline/upper lip/basically my entire lower face). I was on accutane when I was 19/20 which was a huge mistake because it didn’t work and my acne came back worse than had been before. I’ve tried literally everything (antibiotics, creams, masks, vitamins, hollistic remedies) and nothing really made much of a difference. A few months ago I went to a new dermatolgist and he put me on spironolactone, which is an anti-androgen. It’s primary use isn’t acne treatment, but apparently it’s been proven useful in fighting hormonal acne in adults. This was the only thing that I have ever taken that made much of a difference. My skins still not perfect but it’s a million times more manageable. I don’t really get cystic pimples anymore, but when I do they clear up quickly. I haven’t noticed any side effects that are too terrible. When I first started taking it I noticed I would get headacheslre frequently probably because it’s a diuretic so it makes you pee a lot, but once my body got used to it I feel fine. Just thought I would let you know because I’ve struggled with acne for a while and I wish someone would have told me about spironolactone sooner! 🙂
