Disclaimer: I’m gross. I’m an excessively sweaty human being. I remember going through puberty and completely soaking my shirt from armpit sweat. I would sweat then be nervous about sweating so I would sweat more. And to combat all of this, I would use the normal over-the-counter deodorants or anti-perspirants to help with the sweating and the smell. But I found it so weird because it just made it worse, and before I knew it, I had lathered my armpits with 47 layers of sweat and poison. Yes, poison. But I didn’t think anything else would work. Organic? Natural? Oh hells no, I’m not interested in smelling like a hippy. B*tch has to have some standards.

Just a little knowledge for ya if you don’t know what may be hiding in your deodorant, even sometimes in certain “natural” deodorants (source), here’s a quick peek:

  1. aluminum – this blocks your pores from sweating, but can mess with hormones and has been links to cancer and other sketch sh*t
  2. parabens – preservatives – links to hormonal imbalance, cancers and organ toxicity
  3. propylene glycol – a chemical that can cause damage to central nervous system
  4. triclosan – pesticide – may possess endocrine disrupting properties
  5. steareths – additives that makes harsh ingredients more mild

What.The.F*ck. How is this legal? Well, fast food, soda and tobacco are all legal, so I guess it makes sense. And there is sometimes even more than just those 5 crappy ingredients hiding in your deodorant. So gross.

Here’s the thing, I just never really cared about all this. I didn’t want to sweat and I didn’t want to smell, so I globbed on any deodorant that promised the world. But one day one of my good friends, who is pretty hippy dippy but still loves botox (which means I trust her), said it was time for me to toss the crap deodorant and try a natural one. So I did. I took the plunge. And loved it. I sweat less, I NEVER smelled, and I only had to use it one time per day. But I quickly began getting a rash and it didn’t work as well as I hoped.

Luckily, another hippy dippy botox loving friend introduced me to Primally Pure. She explained that the deodorant was way better smelling, way softer and definitely didn’t cause her a rash. I put off purchasing it forever, but then one day fate ran its course and when I was on book tour, I ended up having dinner with the creator of Primally Pure – Bethany. Fate. And once I tried her deodorant, I was blown away. No stink, no reapplying needed, and no rash!

Just a little background about Bethany – she and her family run a farm together full with pastured raised chicken, sheep, and beef. So when Bethany started eating real food and taking care of her body, she decided it was time to do the same thing for her own skin and began creating her own products. 100% all natural. Filled with ingredients you can actually pronounce! And she’s the sweetest, most darling human. She really is. And I’m a b*tch, I wouldn’t lie about that.

So why am I telling you all of this? Because I’m obsessed with this deodorant and obsessed with telling you about my favorite products, treatments and procedures. This deodorant is the best and it’s going to change how you see deodorant and how you take care of your body!

Let’s do a quick run down of all the natural products she has! First up, the deodorant! It comes in 4 different scents – lavender, lemongrass, tea tree, and unscented! It goes on smooth, it doesn’t gunk up, and it seriously smells amazing! I highly highly recommend it! She even has a sensitive line with less baking soda, in case you have experienced a reaction with the normal deodorant. Look how simple the ingredients are in my favorite lavender natural deodorant:

  • Organic Arrowroot Powder, Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil*, Organic Tallow from Grass-Fed Cows, Baking Soda, Organic Beeswax, Organic Lavender Essential Oil

But she also has A TON of other products including the lip balm that works wonders and doesn’t make your lips more chapped (which I SWEAR most chapsticks do!), beauty cream, cleansing oil, and many other face products. And she has body products like body butter and even men’s products!

If you want to take better care of your body, don’t forget about your skin. It’s the biggest organ on your body and it deserves the best! And you know what? While you support your body in becoming healthier and more fragrantly appealing, you’ll also be supporting an amazing woman who is putting good into this world! Hope you guys love Primally Pure as much as I do!

What is your favorite scent so far (of the deodorant)? I’m having such a hard time deciding! I’m kind of wondering if tea tree oil could work for both men and women…

i only have the lavender but i totally want the lemongrass because that’s one of my fav smells

The lemongrass is my fav – it smells amazing.

I went though the worst 2 week detox period when I switched to natural, like I mean I smelt like the funkiest cheese you could ever imagine, but when I found this stuff it all changed (for the better, thank god). 100% the best natural deodorant out there.

whaaaaaat?! that’s awful! i’m surprised i never had that experience

    2. Bethany says:

Lavender and lemongrass are the most popular! And the tea tree is what we recommend for men (although it’s great for women as well).

  2. Carrie says:

I just ordered lavendar and lemongrass. Excited to try them! 😀

Order placed! I’ve been trying to switch to a natural deodorant forever, but nothing seems to work. Can’t wait to try this !!!

Yay! Hope you love it, Carrie! Let us know your thoughts!

I had a similar experience with Primal Pit Paste. I had a rash inside the pit. I switched to Tom’s because I couldn’t handle the rash and it was at Target. I had thrown away all my hormone disrupting options already, so no other choices out there on a whim at the store. Thanks for posting this – I just ordered two scents in the hopes they work out better. I love FATE & how it works in life. It was a small amount of FATE that I came to your website and saw this post, haha! I have followed you on IG for a long time & listen to your podcast, but (unfortunately) rarely came to your website. I had some time and I’m glad I did. Lots of good stuff on here! Looking forward to trying this option. Hope it doesn’t go in the graveyard of natural deodorants. Btw – I am happy to order through affiliate links. If that helps you give free content to the world, I don’t mind them at all!

Finally – someone said what I’ve been thinking about chapstick / lip balm! I’m ordering that and the deodorant when I get out of work tonight! Thanks for being a trusted guinea pig of all things for us 🙂

  6. Leslie says:

I ordered too. Also the lip balm which I have had on my list to try since both Fed and Fit and PaleOMG like and the dry shampoo. I am looking forward to the Lemongrass, currently using Toms but its so wet feeling. Works ok as far as smell goes but I do still sweat some. Can’t wait to try some of your products.

I travel a ton for work (usually in the south) so my products have to be able to hang in a hot car. Do you think this deodorant will melt in a hot car or will the heat change any of its properties? Thanks for the recommendation!!

Thanks for the great info! I’ve worked on trying to eat natural food as much as possible (although organic doesn’t always fit in my budget), but I was curious about your thoughts on non-food items… besides food, what do you prioritize in regards to using only natural products (i.e. Household cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, toothpaste, body lotion, makeup, etc)? I really appreciate it!

I’ll have to try this brand next! I’ve been transitioning all my skincare/hair/makeup/household products to natural after discovering all the crap in them. I’ve tried 3 different natural deoadorants so far and am not super impressed by any of them (I sweat a lot, too!). So this will def be my next try! Keep the natural product recommendations coming! Love your blog/recipes/pods casts/hilarious commentary. You make my life so much easier with yummy, healthy food-I’m happily cooking my way through your latest cookbook!

I’m so happy I read this post! I’ve been thinking about switching to a natural deodorant, but I sweat a lot and the nervous sweat really gets to me at work sometimes. I hate having sweaty marks on my clothes – especially when I wear nice blouses in the corporate world. After reading comments and reviews on Primally Pure and I think it’s worth trying out. Thinking about my Dove Dry Spray antiperspirant makes my arms hurt thinking about all the chemicals.

for real, it’s f*cked up that they let us put that crap on our bodies!
