I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.
Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.
It’s like a fun house up in here.
So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.
Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.
Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos
- Yield: 2-4 1x
Ingredients
For the “tortillas”
- 3 eggs, whisked
- ½ cup canned coconut milk
- 2 tablespoonscoconut flour
- pinch of salt
For the shredded pork
- 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
- 2 tablespoons maple syrup
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- salt, to taste
For the toppings
- 5–6 strips of bacon
- 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
- 2–3 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
- chopped green onions
Instructions
- First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
- Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
- Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
- When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
- Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
- Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
- Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
- Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
- Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
- Happy times.

Have you tried making a paste with baking soda and water? I have a friend who had cystic acne and it worked wonders for her. Give it a try. No side effects and cheap!
Hi Juli,
Do you happen to use mineral make-up? I used it for years and had the worst cystic acne on my jawline and cheeks until I discovered it was the cause of it. I rarely get any now. Hope this helps.
Hey Juli,
I also was dealing with bad acne for a long time, but recently I found that the less you do to your skin, the better.
I did some research on tanning and found that every once in a while it’s really not bad for you at all, I go once a week and it clears my skin right up the next day. It’s not a solution but it does help.
I also started using Cetaphil for gentle skin, and noticed a huge difference, my skin doesn’t get as dry as it used to and my skin tone is starting to even out!!
Those are just some things I did and they worked for me.
Other than that though, I think you should look into Red Light Therapy. google it. There’s a lot of benefits to it and it might be the answer to evertyhing! hopefully.. lol 🙂
Naturopath’s freaking work. It’s crazy. It’s also crazy expensive, but I’ve never had better skin than when I was on those $60 herbal pills for like 2 months.
That being said, my skin is pretty good right now, just gets a bit bad when I PMS or stress like mad. If you don’t already take a ZINC SUPPLEMENT, you should! It’s the single best thing I do for my skin. Even now that I’m eating paleo & a ton more veggies I can see it in my skin if I’ve been slacking on my zinc supplement.
Also be geeeeeentle to your skin, when you’re washing, drying, & lotioning, and don’t touch it throughout the day! Like seriously, don’t scrub, don’t use those St. Ives scrubs w/ the crushed walnut shells, that just tears up your skin. Use your fingertips only w/ light pressure. Treat it like a piece of silk or a delicate vase or.. something. I’m worst about this one but when I do do it my skin looks pretty phenomenal.
Aaaand the last thing I do to keep my skin in check is to keep it moisturized! I wash it once a day at night then put lotion on, then I put a small amount of sunscreen on in the morning before my makeup. I use all cetaphil products, especially their eczema lotion.
Seriously though. Take a zinc supplement, on the daily, immediately after a meal or like, in the middle of your meal, or else it’ll make you sick. But you’ll have pretty skin!
Check out customskinsolutions.com, I had bizarre acne issues and Monique fixed it all within a month or so. She will do “appointments” through email and diagnose your skin. I haven’t had a problem since, and I love the products she uses!
I would sure look to food first as a cause and cure. Dairy first, then soy, then all grains. You might want to google the connections between these and acne. I would erase all possible food allergies/reactions before ever turning to chemicals on my face. I have gone grain-free and it has done wonders for so many physical and mental issues I’ve had. I’ve read a good many reports of acne going away with ditching grains and/or dairy. Not easy to do at times, but as I told someone who said he likes his carbs too much to attempt such a thing, I told him I like sanity, no chronic back pain, and no allergies even better than carbs. Good luck.
Hi! So acne sucks…BUT I just discovered something called “seed cycling”. It balaces your hormones. I went to a naturopath in the past and they told me to try it.
http://www.naturalmedclinic.com/articles/seed_rotation_plan.pdf
I’ve been doing this for a few weeks and it is helping my skin SO MUCH. It’s so easy to do, def worth a shot….good luck! Love the blog.
Juli, you are HILARIOUS! We should be friends. haha. Couple questions/comments:
1.) I am NOT a crossfitter. Although it looks awesome, my competitive athletic days are over. hah. I barely do P90x.By barely, I mean like half a work out 3 times a week, maybe. Would eating paleo help me to lose weight still?
2.) Do you have the nutritional info for your recipes?
3.) Acne. sucks. I know a pretty awesome girl who does Mary Kay and has helped a lot of people with their acne. She’s pretty fancy and sends free pamper packages with products for you to try before you buy. I can promise that if you choose to try Mary Kay, your arms and legs will still be intact. And you can even get your money back if it doesn’t work. 🙂
1. yes.
2. no.
3. muchas gracias!
Hey Juli, I follow your blog regularly and absolutely love your sense of humor, food and candidness. This is my first time posting a comment and I apologize that it is about acne. I understand your pain – I have been dealing with cystic acne for about 10 years now and I KNOW how awful it can be. I must say that since I have started eating paleo on a regular basis it has gotten much better. However, I am also using 2 Rx skin creams which have helped me greatly and I thought I would share the info with you. Mind you, I have been on every antibiotic known to man to treat acne, with the exception of acutane. I will say, if my cystic acne comes back I will be trying acutane. But for the time being, these creams have worked really well for me, they might for you too. One is differin gel, use it at night. The other is Clindamycin Topical, an antibacterial face cream I use every morning. Hope this helps thanks for making me smile every day and keep cooking! I love your recipes.
How do the tortillas taste? I have a recipe that’s egg whites and coconut flour with a few other things, and I didn’t like them. They were so dry! This recipe looks delish though, and I’m stoked to try your recipe for the tortillas 🙂
these aren’t dry at all!!
