I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.

Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.

It’s like a fun house up in here.

So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.

Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star

4.9 from 32 reviews

  • Yield: 2-4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the “tortillas”

For the shredded pork

  • 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • salt, to taste

For the toppings

  • 56 strips of bacon
  • 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
  • 23 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
  • chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
  2. Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
  3. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  4. When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
  5. Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
  6. Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
  7. Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
  8. Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
  9. Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
  10. Happy times.

Hi Juli! My husband and I just found your blog and love it. We are brand new to the Paleo lifestyle and your recipes are amazing. I’m 38 and have been dealing with acne my entire teen and adult life. I have been on every kind of antibiotic and cream. The acne did not go away. My face just got redder and hurt more. After several months of trial and acne I realized the cause was shrimp. I know that sounds crazy. Once I started staying away from it my acne cleared up. No more antibiotics. No more topicals. If I eat one piece of shrimp however I get the worst breakout on my face that lasts forever. I have been shrimp and acne free for about a year now. Once a month I’ll get a small one on my chin but it clears up in just a couple days. Thank you for putting yourself out there and inspiring us newbies. P.S. The five fingers with the jeans…hilarious!

    Hi Juli,
    Short and Sweet.

I really love your recipes and it helps keep me inspired about food.
Check out Nora T Gedgaudas “PrimalbodyPrimalMind”.
It might help you understand why you have acne. She talks about excessive and incorrect use of carbohydrates especially sugar consumption. This affects your hormones and it also creates inflammation in the body. And possibly increase the amount of fibre to improve digestion so you are moving as well as possible so that the toxins that are in your food are out asap so they aren’t getting reabsorbed back in to the bloodstream via your poo.

PS. I totally get how bad acne can make you feel. I’m about your age, and look a lot like you (seriously weird), and have bouts of acne-which is why I became so obsessed with food and health. Peace.

    Hello 🙂
I cant say I have ever had acne but my partner has which is clearly up beautifully with the Paleo diet and advice from my herbalist whom said that acne is caused by the over production of hormones(which as Juli said is made worse by excessive and incorrect use of carbohydrates especially sugar consumption) . When the body produces more hormones than the liver can filter at any given time the body then starts trying to get rid of them through the skin- hence acne.

So herbalists advice was: Eat a diet rich in fibre to help clean liver, eat meat that is easy to digest (pretty much anything but pork), eat loads of greens, drink lots of water and take herbal medicine for liver detoxification and support. She has us on milk thistle powder that we mix up and drink in water twice a day which seems to be doing what it needs for both of us, we drink dandelion tea throughout the day and take Chlorella powder(make sure its organic) in the mornings 🙂 My partners skin is looking great now, also the products he uses are Suban soap http://www.sabun.co.nz/ and Sukin aloe vera gel as a moisturer as it keeps the skin moist without putting extra oil into it.

I have to go bubz is awake…I hope this helps

I forgot to say before that eating to much fat is hard on the liver to..even the good stuff, my herbalist taught me that to. xo

Hi Juli, Im a huge fan of your blog. Love love love all your recipes. My husband loooooves that almond butter two layer fudge.
Okay, anyways, a more serious topic. I use to have really bad acne before Paleo. It got a little better once I started eating right, but I would still get cystic like painful pimples along my jaw line mostly. So I told myself that it had to be something else. I’m too young for this misery. I went “no-poo” and liked that and decided that I would do it for treating my skin as well. I started to only use things like coconut oil after a shower to moisturize, I’m making my own deodorant and found a natural olive oil soap that I started to use. Okay that started to help a LITTLE bit more. Now I was going crazy and stressing about it. I switched birth control pills 3 times to different dosages and formulas. One month into the 3rd kind of pill I had an outbreak again. I told my husband okay this is my body and obviously these chemicals/hormones in these pills are not natural for it. It may be TMI but we went back to the old way of condoms and I’ve been off birth control pills since last fall. I only get acne if I touch my face too much (dirty germy fingers) or if I eat something not paleo. OH and Ive had the nuvaring, paraguard IUD, Mirena IUD along with 3 different birth controls… Sure scientists make these great discoveries but it’s not great for everyone. Au naturale…seems to do the trick. Good luck!!!!

A lot of people have a lot to say about acne…… But not me. I just have to say that this recipe is delicious! Perfect for dinner and will be having leftovers for breakfast and lunch!

  6. Lara says:

Came to get the tortilla recipe and got sucked into all the acne advice:)
I had the same acne on my jaw line for 4 years. I finally came to the conclusion that the Mirena I had had to be causing it. Got it removed and the acne disappeared w/in a couple days… even the ones that weren’t red or hurt anymore, but were just there under the skin. It is all gone and I haven’t had one since! SO, if by chance you have Mirena, get rid of it:)

  7. Laura says:

This is androgenic acne — which can be made worse by exercise. You can lower your androgen level by taking spirnonalactone, which is a diuretic.

I’ve posted on my blog about acne before… and it’s so tough. I know people want to give advice, because they’ve been there / done that, and want to offer help. Acne can be so individualized though, what works for you is going to be totally unique to you.

I was doing OCM for a while, and so many people told me it worked better for them than Proactive did. For me, OCM helped.. but I was still having bad breakouts, scarring, and was so self-conscious. So for me, Proactive did the trick.

Whatever will be the treatment that works for you – I hope you come across it ASAP. Having clear skin makes a huge difference in how I feel about myself, and I wish I could snap my fingers and give it to every acne-sufferer out there!

Love your blog. Definitely trying these taco shells.

I’m 25. Been on a natural (some say hippy, I say whatever) kick for some time. Have had crappy acne since 13….until last year. In an effort to save money (My Belli hormonal acne wash that worked pretty well was $50+/pop), I tried washing my face with honey… yep, straight up local raw honey and my skin has never looked or felt better. I moisturize with an OIL blend (yikes! I know, but it seems to work) before makeup. This routine is cheap, couldn’t be more natural, and my skin LOVES it. I just add a lil water and sometimes baking soda if I want extra scrub a dub. I love that I’m using something I already use in my kitchen and its not a tragedy if I forget to pack my skincare products for vacation. just a quick stop for any ol’ natural honey and I’m good to go.

For the record, I don’t take any BC, it def messes with my hormones, and, thus, skin.

I love how eating Paleo makes me look and feel and Im very thankful to faithful bloggers like you who make the transition away from a typical American diet so dang easy by providing all these yummy recipes! Rock on.
