I want to talk about acne. Mostly because it’s pissing me off and if I complain to my friends, they just get mad. So I write in my diary instead. Aka, my blog.

Acne is stupid. And no, nothing has worked. I thought long and hard about going to a naturopath, but I just can’t afford that. I spent my money on more fun things, like trips to exotic places. Instead, I choose to try to ignore the acne since there seems to be nothing I can do about. The acne is all on my jaw line now, meaning it mostly has to do with my hormones. And since I stopped lifting heavy and CrossFitting multiple times a day, my hormones have started to calm down. I’ve lost weight, my body is remembering it’s feminine, and my cystic acne has calmed A BIT. I emphasize a bit, because it’s not much. I posted this picture below the other day and people thought my face looked great. Little do they know, I have makeup on that smudges off on EVERYTHING. Like, seriously, everything. It’s disgusting. I’m astonished I have a boyfriend that will put up with that. Poor man. But I wanted to show you that I still do have plenty of acne. I’ve obviously just good at makeup, good lighting, and well, contorting my face to look like I have none. Meaning, make myself look like an idiot.

It’s like a fun house up in here.

So in conclusion, my acne is not really getting better. I just wanted this to be clear since I haven’t talked about it as much anymore. I’m trying to put my energy of hatred for my skin into other things. Like, oh I don’t know, just being happy. And loving other people. And supporting my friends.

Speaking of supporting my friends, I need your help in supporting one of my blogging friends. If you haven’t read Nom Nom Paleo, I don’t know what you’ve been doing with your extra time. PS- my boyfriend thought these tortillas tasted like pancakes. Relationships are hard. Sometimes you just must agree to disagree. And that’s that.

Boneless Pork Short Rib Breakfast Tacos

5 Stars 4 Stars 3 Stars 2 Stars 1 Star

4.9 from 32 reviews

  • Yield: 2-4 1x

Ingredients

Scale

For the “tortillas”

For the shredded pork

  • 2 pounds boneless pork short ribs
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • salt, to taste

For the toppings

  • 56 strips of bacon
  • 1 (6-8 ounce) can of green chiles
  • 23 tablespoons hot sauce (or your choice)
  • chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. First, this recipe will start in the crockpot.
  2. Add short ribs to the crockpot. Pour maple syrup on top of them, along with garlic powder and salt. (I didn’t put any liquid in the crockpot because the fat will leak out and protect it from burning)
  3. Cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  4. When you wake up the next day, remove the pork ribs from the crockpot, shred them and pour some of the excess liquid from the crockpot over the shredded pork for extra flavor.
  5. Now make the tortillas. In a medium bowl, whisk together the tortilla ingredients until smooth.
  6. Place a large skilletover medium-high heat, pour ingredients into the pan to create a pancake size tortilla. I would pour on the liquid, pick up the skillet to roll it around and flatten out the tortilla even more. Cook on both sides for just about a minute per side.
  7. Once all your tortillas are done (this made about 8-10 tortillas for me), place bacon on the skillet or oven to cook on both sides, cool then roughly chop.
  8. Then mix together the green chiles and hot sauce in a bowl, place in microwave for 1:30-2:00 minutes or until hot. And then chop the green chiles.
  9. Now load up each tortilla. Shredded pork, green chiles, bacon, then green onions. Then eat it.
  10. Happy times.

After all these comments I hope you get to read this. I have had identical acne issues since I had my last child. I have been on HRT and a million other treatments, including most everything listed above. My homeopath recently had me do a lab test that indicates Leaky Gut Syndrome. It probably came about because right after having my son I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease. But, a common symptom is candida overgrowth in your small intestine. This can directly cause acne! So, I have been on the leaky gut diet, and the acne is slowly going away along with my other autoimmune symptoms. I didn’t think it would make a difference since I was already eating strict Paleo, but it has!

I know a doctor can be expensive but shelling out for a naturopath got me farther with my health and acne than anything else I’ve ever done…in over ten years of struggling with my skin. I just finished a long, intensive diet/protocol to heal my leaky gut, but you know what? I could barely tolerate any foods before without cystic acne…and now I can and my life has gotten SO much easier. I actually told my dermatologist when I started working with a naturopath, and she basically said it was bogus and food doesn’t affect skin. I will never go to a derm again if I can help it! Homeopathy all the way. I really hope you find something that helps you…I know firsthand what a b*tch acne is 🙁

Just a quick comment on acne- at 26 I developed cystic acne, tried a lot of things but was never willing to poison my body with drugs. Try washing your face with raw African black soap. It’s cheap and usually found in beauty supply stores or African oil shops. I literally have not had even one cystic acne pimple since November when I started using it. Now I do still get an occasional whitehead, but I consider that pretty normal! Good luck! Rose water cleanser is a great follow up…

First off: Dude. Awesome idea. I don’t know why I’ve never thought of CrockPot breakfast, but this is awesome.
Secondly: Acne. I used to be big into lots of crazy soaps and medications and they basically dried my skin out to no end, which ultimately made the acne worse. Trying to get a little more natural with it. My husband said that my skin is definitely clearer since I’ve dumped the weird chemicals and it feels healthier too 🙂

Hey love your blog! So just like you don’t want to eat chemicals, you don’t want to clean your house or your body with them. Your body will absorb 60% of what you put on it into your bloodstream. Gross!

I sell Norwex products, they are amazing! I would recommend our Body Pack, they are phenomenal to clean your face with and you ONLY need Water! They are super soft clothes that will take all the dirt, grime and your makeup off so super easy. I have had several people tell me that their acne has cleared up, no joke. Another nice thing about the clothes is that they are self sanitizing, meaning they contain silver. The silver is a self-purifier and helps cleanse the cloth of mold, fungi and bacterial odour within 24 hours, so that it is ready to use again. No more stinky clothes!

I think they could really help you, check them out and if you have any questions I would be glad to talk to you, email me!

PS. I swear I didn’t want to come on here and sell you something but I know these clothes will help you.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned this (I have to get a 3 year old outside to play so my time is limited on the PC.) but have you tried stopping ALL fluoride Julie? I am on birth control pills (have to be, no choice here, no more babies for awhile.) and I still had horrid cystic acne. Just painful bumps and if I tried to mess with them-well I still have dark scars on my fair skin. I kept reading about the fluoride at dangerous levels and my dentist was having me use heavy fluoride cause well my teeth are decaying faster than I can get them fixed. The grain free Primal is helping and so I only brush with Desert Essence fluoride free toothpaste and stopped that purple Crest PRo health, within a month every cystic bump, GONE. I was shocked that it was that simple. Try it if you haven’t. I also smear coconut oil on my skin. My skin looks better and I will admit I have small breakouts but nothing like it was and it’s mostly cause I get lax in my eating habits. XD Anyway, try it. Thought I’d pass it on.

  8. Kate says:

Oh and I felt weird about the coconut oil on my skin (extra virgin stuff, smells so nice.) But it didn’t bother it the way I thought. My theory is that the harsh acne washes STRIP oil and so our skin only produces more therefore more breakouts…vicious cycle! So rub it on, rub it in really good and then wipe off the excess so you don’t look like a greased pig. 😉

So, I’ve read several of the comments on this thread and I’m sure there are so many recommendations that every one has suggested you try. I think the solution to acne is different for everyone and sometimes, unfortunately, our hormones are going to continue to give us acne.

My experience with acne started about the day I turned 20. Seriously, I had flawless skin and then it was like bam.. all of a sudden I had terrible acne all over. I have tried every OTC suggested, every face wash, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, high and low doses, face creams, prescription medications (name it, I’ve tried it) along with birth control. I tired everything except for accutane which is mostly because I refused to use it. I struggled for about three years trying to find what was right for my skin. I finally just stopped everything because I was exhausted. I really felt like there was a natural approach to my war with acne. So I started exercising more and eating cleaner, but I really didn’t see a huge difference until a friend of mine asked about the pH of my face wash. I had never considered that to be an option in face wash. So I did some research and started using Skin By Ann Webb. I started with the Spearmint Tea cleanser (2% salicylic acid and pH 3.5-4.5) and the Pomegranate Protection Moisturizer, then later the Lavender Silk Scrub (which is amazing!). I have been using these products since! I also have learned so much about diet and nutrition and how it plays a role in acne. The cleaner I eat, the clearer my skin. I also run and do crossfit and have no problems with that increasing acne. I still get the occasional, hormonal break outs…but they’re nothing like they used to be. So for me Skin By Ann Webb (I’ll share the link below. I know Whole Foods sells the products too), working out (as much as I want!), and eating as clean as possible (modified Paleo for me.. I still love peanut butter!!).

Again, I know that the same thing doesn’t work for everyone so all I can do is share my experience with you! I hope you find a solution that works for you!! I know how tough it is.

I’m not sure if you see comments from past posts but was wondering if you could tell me, will country style pork ribs work as well as the short ribs? I’m not sure of the difference.

    1. juli says:

Absolutely! It will still be great!
