Well crap. I just woke up this morning feeling fine, sat down on the couch to cuddle with the puppy dog and I felt a pain shoot up my neck and now I can barely turn my head. What in the what?! I think I may have been cursed since last night I heard a cat fighting with some other creature. I bet it was a black cat and now I’m effed because I didn’t run outside at 3am to save it. So now I’m trying not to move my neck even in the slightest because it shoots sharp pains up and down my spine. Totally normal.
I turn 29 next month. This older age (no, I’m not saying I’m old, stop freaking out) is really starting to rear her ugly head and I’m not into it. Aches and pains, skin texture changing, more moles. I’ve had 3 moles in the past month removed now to check for cancer. Luckily, we are good so far. But I have about 524 to cross off my list. Cute.
Speaking of 30, I want to start planning my 30th birthday trip. I’m not a huge birthday person. I don’t like people feeling obligated to talk to me or give me things because it’s the day I shot out of my mother’s womb. I just like spending that day however I’d like – which means I usually work, go to the gym, then get myself some gluten free cake. I don’t need presents or FB wishes. If I want something, I will just make myself work hard enough to earn it. BUT I do like an excuse to plan a trip somewhere. And a part of me REALLY wants to go to Greece. But that’s an expensive trip and most of my friends are shooting out babies or just don’t want to spend that much money on travel. I’m already told daily that I’m an only child and act out only child behaviors on a daily basis, so just saying eff it and going to Greece could come off a tad selfish.
So where should I (meaning we…there I go with the only child stuff) go?! I’ve been to Mexico so many times but a blogger I follow just started posting some photos from Playa del Carmen and it looks pretty damn awesome! And it’s so easy to get to and affordable compared to other options.
PS – still can’t move my neck. Send help! And cake!
Seared Ahi Tuna Sushi Bowls
- Yield: 2 1x
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons sriracha
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar (or coconut vinegar for strict paleo)
- pinch of salt
- 1 tuna steak or sushi grade tuna (I used a tuna steak for this)
- 2 tablespoons high heat avocado oil
- 1 batch cauliflower rice
- 1 cucumber, diced
- 1 avocado, diced
- green onions, sliced
- pickled ginger
- pinch of black sesame seeds
- pinch of white sesame seeds
Instructions
- Whisk together the coconut aminos, sriracha, sesame oil, vinegar and salt. Reserve 1/2 the mixture and set aside. Place tuna steak in a shallow dish then pour the other 1/2 of the mixture on top. Cover and set in the fridge to marinate for 3 or more hours, turning to tuna half way through.
- Once the tuna is done marinating, make the cauliflower rice and set to the side to keep warm while you finish the rest of the bowl.
- Place a medium stainless steel pan over medium high heat and add the avocado oil. Once pan is super hot, place the marinated tuna steak in the pan and sear on both sides for 1 minute. Remove from pan after the 2 minutes and place on a cutting board to rest for 5-10 minutes.
- While the tuna steak rests, dice the cucumber and avocado and begin to build the bowls.
- Thinly slice the tuna steak against the grain and top on your rice bowl. Garnish with green onions, pickled ginger, and sesame seeds and use the 1/2 reserved marinade to splash on top of your tuna bowls!

MAUI! Do HomeAway or VRBO, rent a car and tear it up! Seriously an amazing trip and it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Go to Greece. It’s not like if you do have kids it’s going to get cheaper. If you can go now, it will be worth it.
Happy early birthday! I will be turning 28 next month, but 30 feels like it’s around the corner! I saw recently that you wanted to visit Alaska…you should totally do an Alaskan cruise. I did it a few years ago and it was beautiful. The ship left out of Seattle so you could always do a day or two there before/after the cruise too! We got to visit a few different cities in Alaska, go hiking, see some whales, bald eagles – you name it. Some friends decided to do an excursion where they took a helicopter and got to land on top of a glacier. It was incredible! 🙂
I second the “go to Greece!” But if you’re thinking Mexico, we got married in Playa and then went down to Tulum, and both were f-ing awesome. Really loved Tulum. I would also highly recommend Nicaragua!
nicaragua is definitely on my list!
Playa Del Carmen is the best! There are tons of super cute boutique hotels that are intimate and right in the middle of town. They blocked off the main street so that it’s pedestrian only and it’s awesome to explore the local shops and taquerias. We love Illusion Boutique Hotel by Xperience Hotels, it’s adult only (no kiddies running around the pool!) and it’s not fancy at all which makes it even more awesome. It’s like 10 steps from the beach. Playa still feels very local, it has not been taken over by the big brands like Cancun yet. YET…. every time we visit we see a few more changes so if you want to go, do it soon!
And also, if want to go to Greece then go to freaking Greece, who cares what others think? Hubby and I stopped caring and started traveling the way we like to and guess what, eventually a few friends jumped on board too. Lol, guess they saw how much fun we were having!
ooooh good to know about Playa! i’ll have to look into that a little more!
Go to Greece! And don’t feel guilty or selfish for doing it. There’s absolutely nothing wrong or only child-esque about planning a big trip for your birthday. Or just because you want to do it. Plenty of people with siblings do it, too. People with kids do it. People in general do it, if it’s a priority. Doooo iiiiiiit. It’ll be awesome.
I went to Greece last year and it was amazing. It wasn’t cheap because we splurged on hotels with amazing views. I think the flight and hotels for a 9 day trip were about $2,000 per person. But there are certainly cheaper places to stay than the ones we picked. If you are going for your 30th def check out Mykonos – that is the “party” island in Greece. Santorini is beautiful but kind of more of a couples scene.

i don’t think that price is terrible! i would think it would be way more! good to know!
I just booked my 30th birthday trip to Playa del Carmen! Found a great place and Southwest has a package with flights that was perfectly priced.
Hi Juli! I think this was the podcast that you gave a quick rundown or your orange theory workout? My first orange theory class was the same day! I did the same workout- it was a tough one! I also found myself getting into the red zone more than they wanted. It was hard for me because my “all out” seems to be different than what they mean. Coming from crossfit, my all out is ALLLLL out! I was almost pukey through the burpee part! went again today and paced myself better! Its an awesome class! Love the podcast and your awesome website! (And snaps and anything involving Jackson)
yeah the competitive crossfit in us crossfitters definitely makes us go ALL OUT! and when i look up at the screen and see i have less calories than someone else, it makes me want to push harder. i can’t help it!
Girrrrl, as an only child who’s married without kids to another only child who’s married without kids, GO TO GREECE! My husband and I bought a Groupon for 6 nights in Greece, 3 in Athens and 3 in Santorini, that includes flights, hotels, and the ferry to/from the island. It was (in my opinion) very reasonably priced. We’re going in 1 month! My thought was 1) I’ve never been to Europe and 2) why wait until you’re pregnant and can’t drink to take a babymoon??? So Greece will be honeymoon #2 because 1 just isn’t enough. I recommend looking at Groupon trip deals! They have a lot of great ones! 🙂
and the groupon wasn’t sketch at all?!
Nope! It was like buying a voucher that you redeem for the package through a travel agency. Granted we haven’t gone yet, but the hotels in our package are 4 star (one of which we upgraded for a little extra $). Our particular trip had 10 or 12 travel dates to choose from too. I asked around with people first and heard several say the Groupon trips they’ve taken have been awesome. 🙂
that’s so so cool! i’ve always been nervous about those!
