Well crap. I just woke up this morning feeling fine, sat down on the couch to cuddle with the puppy dog and I felt a pain shoot up my neck and now I can barely turn my head. What in the what?! I think I may have been cursed since last night I heard a cat fighting with some other creature. I bet it was a black cat and now I’m effed because I didn’t run outside at 3am to save it. So now I’m trying not to move my neck even in the slightest because it shoots sharp pains up and down my spine. Totally normal.
I turn 29 next month. This older age (no, I’m not saying I’m old, stop freaking out) is really starting to rear her ugly head and I’m not into it. Aches and pains, skin texture changing, more moles. I’ve had 3 moles in the past month removed now to check for cancer. Luckily, we are good so far. But I have about 524 to cross off my list. Cute.
Speaking of 30, I want to start planning my 30th birthday trip. I’m not a huge birthday person. I don’t like people feeling obligated to talk to me or give me things because it’s the day I shot out of my mother’s womb. I just like spending that day however I’d like – which means I usually work, go to the gym, then get myself some gluten free cake. I don’t need presents or FB wishes. If I want something, I will just make myself work hard enough to earn it. BUT I do like an excuse to plan a trip somewhere. And a part of me REALLY wants to go to Greece. But that’s an expensive trip and most of my friends are shooting out babies or just don’t want to spend that much money on travel. I’m already told daily that I’m an only child and act out only child behaviors on a daily basis, so just saying eff it and going to Greece could come off a tad selfish.
So where should I (meaning we…there I go with the only child stuff) go?! I’ve been to Mexico so many times but a blogger I follow just started posting some photos from Playa del Carmen and it looks pretty damn awesome! And it’s so easy to get to and affordable compared to other options.
PS – still can’t move my neck. Send help! And cake!
Seared Ahi Tuna Sushi Bowls
- Yield: 2 1x
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup coconut aminos
- 2 tablespoons sriracha
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar (or coconut vinegar for strict paleo)
- pinch of salt
- 1 tuna steak or sushi grade tuna (I used a tuna steak for this)
- 2 tablespoons high heat avocado oil
- 1 batch cauliflower rice
- 1 cucumber, diced
- 1 avocado, diced
- green onions, sliced
- pickled ginger
- pinch of black sesame seeds
- pinch of white sesame seeds
Instructions
- Whisk together the coconut aminos, sriracha, sesame oil, vinegar and salt. Reserve 1/2 the mixture and set aside. Place tuna steak in a shallow dish then pour the other 1/2 of the mixture on top. Cover and set in the fridge to marinate for 3 or more hours, turning to tuna half way through.
- Once the tuna is done marinating, make the cauliflower rice and set to the side to keep warm while you finish the rest of the bowl.
- Place a medium stainless steel pan over medium high heat and add the avocado oil. Once pan is super hot, place the marinated tuna steak in the pan and sear on both sides for 1 minute. Remove from pan after the 2 minutes and place on a cutting board to rest for 5-10 minutes.
- While the tuna steak rests, dice the cucumber and avocado and begin to build the bowls.
- Thinly slice the tuna steak against the grain and top on your rice bowl. Garnish with green onions, pickled ginger, and sesame seeds and use the 1/2 reserved marinade to splash on top of your tuna bowls!

my whole foods has a little freezer section by the seafood that has sushi grade fish
GO TO GREECE! Take your husband with you and have a friends party/outing/whatevs before or after. Then you only have to worry about your budget. My guy and I went to Costa Rica for my 30th. It’s one of those milestone birthdays that I just think you should do something awesome for. And, 30 is kind of awesome. I pretend it means people take me seriously, but that’s probably wishful thinking. 🙂
going to CR next month! so excited!
GREECE!!! Just finished up my husband’s 30th birthday trip in Spain and it was so much fun! My advice-just go with your husband or one other couple that you know you travel well with. Greece is next on our list 🙂
If you do choose Mexico, I second Tulum! It is so awesome! Little bungalows with amazing food and drinks. Totally laid back and not full of touristy stuff. We loved it!
ok good to know about the greece with couples trip! and tulum! i think my best friend wants to go there for her 30th so i’m glad to hear it’s awesome!
Go to Greece!!!
We went to Spain this past January-Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo, and Zaragoza and guess what? We’re going back to Barcelona this May to see a soccer game?!! (and I’m not even a sports fan).
And I see that I am clearly an atypical Juli fan, since I will be 58 on my next birthday.
I have been meaning to send a kudos to you for awhile. When I first got interested in Paleo several years back, yours was one of the first websites I found and I stayed because, well, YOU CAN COOK. Your energy is fun and you’ve made a difference in my life. It was you who ranted so much on CrossFit that while reading one of your workouts to my husband (not quite understanding all of the language yet) we both joined a box (2+ years ago). I will never be going to the CrossFit games but I still wear a size 4 jeans. Also, and this one did take a little effort, last April in a post, you reiterated something I already knew…you won’t lose or keep the weight off if you don’t give up the alcohol; so as of that day I did. Not that I was a big drinker but I did appreciate and look forward that glass of white wine at the end of the day. Now, the same way your cravings change when you eat good food and you start to crave it, when I get home I really look forward to that glass of Seltzer water. Who knew? Anyway… Greece is calling… and perhaps your chiropractor is as well (insert cake emogi here):)
awwwwww that’s so so amazing! good for you for taking the leap and trying crossfit out! and extra kudos to you for cutting out alcohol to see what it does to your body and how you feel!! that’s DEFINITELY the hardest thing for people to cut out!
Greece is surprisingly affordable once you get there (the flight can be pricey, of course). I had a Greece trip planned…then broke up with my boyfriend and had to rethink that (ugh). But I was finding amazing Airbnbs within walking distance of the Parthenon in Athens for less than $100 a night (and most are in the $50 – $80 range). No joke. And these were (by pictures, of course) fully equipped, nice flats. Greece’s economy isn’t great at the moment, which makes prices for travelers more friendly…but who knows where that could be in another year. But I say go for it! Mexico will always be there waiting for a quick / inexpensive trip.
wow!! that’s good to know!!
I JUST booked flights to Greece this week for the end of this summer and honestly cried a little when we did! 🙂 it’s been a lifelong dream. It was just over $800 round trip but at one point I saw some for $650-ish, I say totally go for it!
You should definitely go to greece! Most of my family lives their and I have been multiple times and its one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It would be a great trip to just do with your husband! There are so many thing you can do that aren’t expensive at all. I love your recipes btw. I think you are definitely my favorite paleo blogger!
awwwww thanks, katerina!
I had the same problem with my neck a few months ago! I went to the chiropractor and I was feeling 200% better by that afternoon. It really helped me! This recipe looks awesome, btw. 😛
Raw fish?! Be still my heart! <3
You and your husband should go to San Juan, Puerto Rico! Old San Juan is gorgeous. Full of history, amazing food, and the coffee is unreal. The beaches are stunning and the surfing is incredible and you don’t have to wear a wetsuit!
