Well crap. I just woke up this morning feeling fine, sat down on the couch to cuddle with the puppy dog and I felt a pain shoot up my neck and now I can barely turn my head. What in the what?! I think I may have been cursed since last night I heard a cat fighting with some other creature. I bet it was a black cat and now I’m effed because I didn’t run outside at 3am to save it. So now I’m trying not to move my neck even in the slightest because it shoots sharp pains up and down my spine. Totally normal.

I turn 29 next month. This older age (no, I’m not saying I’m old, stop freaking out) is really starting to rear her ugly head and I’m not into it. Aches and pains, skin texture changing, more moles. I’ve had 3 moles in the past month removed now to check for cancer. Luckily, we are good so far. But I have about 524 to cross off my list. Cute.

Speaking of 30, I want to start planning my 30th birthday trip. I’m not a huge birthday person. I don’t like people feeling obligated to talk to me or give me things because it’s the day I shot out of my mother’s womb. I just like spending that day however I’d like – which means I usually work, go to the gym, then get myself some gluten free cake. I don’t need presents or FB wishes. If I want something, I will just make myself work hard enough to earn it. BUT I do like an excuse to plan a trip somewhere. And a part of me REALLY wants to go to Greece. But that’s an expensive trip and most of my friends are shooting out babies or just don’t want to spend that much money on travel. I’m already told daily that I’m an only child and act out only child behaviors on a daily basis, so just saying eff it and going to Greece could come off a tad selfish.

So where should I (meaning we…there I go with the only child stuff) go?! I’ve been to Mexico so many times but a blogger I follow just started posting some photos from Playa del Carmen and it looks pretty damn awesome! And it’s so easy to get to and affordable compared to other options.

PS – still can’t move my neck. Send help! And cake!

Instructions

  1. Whisk together the coconut aminos, sriracha, sesame oil, vinegar and salt. Reserve 1/2 the mixture and set aside. Place tuna steak in a shallow dish then pour the other 1/2 of the mixture on top. Cover and set in the fridge to marinate for 3 or more hours, turning to tuna half way through.
  2. Once the tuna is done marinating, make the cauliflower rice and set to the side to keep warm while you finish the rest of the bowl.
  3. Place a medium stainless steel pan over medium high heat and add the avocado oil. Once pan is super hot, place the marinated tuna steak in the pan and sear on both sides for 1 minute. Remove from pan after the 2 minutes and place on a cutting board to rest for 5-10 minutes.
  4. While the tuna steak rests, dice the cucumber and avocado and begin to build the bowls.
  5. Thinly slice the tuna steak against the grain and top on your rice bowl. Garnish with green onions, pickled ginger, and sesame seeds and use the 1/2 reserved marinade to splash on top of your tuna bowls!

I live in the UK so have been to Greece on many holidays and can’t recomend it enough! Visiting the islands has definitely been my favourite, peronally we choose to get an apartment in a complex with a shared pool, so we can cook for oursleves (helps keep costs down) and pick some places ot eat out, I find it means you go out and explore more as you’re not tied to eating on the complex!

Girl, you should go to New Orleans for your 30th!! That’s what I did for mine last year! It’s cheap to travel there (good if you want to invite a lot of friends), the food is AMAZING and you can walk around and drink! And there’s lots of stuff to do in the area, it’s not just drinking and bars. So fun to walk around and explore. I freaking love NOLA!!

Juli you should definitely go to Greece – It is absolutely beautiful there! The sights, the history, the partying, beautiful people and weather and the food is absolutely to die for! Greece (particularly the islands – Santorini, Mykonos) is one of my top HAVE TO RETURN to destinations. You would love it 🙂

About the neck pain…..see a chiropractor. Honestly, one, chiropractic WORKS! Two, Chiropractic fixes the problem (as opposed to drugs that just cover up the problem and stop the pain). And, three, Chiropractic is totally paleo. It is natural and your own body fixes your own body.

If you want more info feel free to ask!

And Greece has airbnb which is good for self catering. However, there are millions on refugees floating around all of Europe right now so not sure how Greece is coping, I know they were overwhelmed a few months ago and the country is close to bankruptcy. Might be better for the dollar.
I like Sprouts for the sashimi grade tuna.

Hi Juli! Thanks so much for sharing so many amazing recipes. I am new to the paleo world, as in like in the last month lol but have loved everything about your podcasts and blog. I am 21 years old and find it very encouraging that you started your paleo journey around this same time. I have bought one of your cook books as well as the Fed and Fit cook book. I was wondering if there are any books you suggest I read to really learn more about paleo in general, not necessarily just recipes but just to become more educated about everything and the reasons behind it. If you know of any good tools please let me know! and by the way I’ll literally turn on your podcasts for my 5 minute drive home from class because it just puts me in such a great mood to go conquer the world with confidence in who I am, so yeah thanks for that! You rock, and sorry about all your crazy haters.

that’s so awesome! glad Cassy and I can be part of your journey! definitely check out Robb Wolf! He has a new book out, too. i haven’t checked that one out yet, but his book The Paleo Solution completely changed my life and really opened my eyes! it’s amazing!

      1. Pamela says:

Hi, Mallory. I am also new too, and Juli and Cassy have both changed my lives and inspired me in so many ways (love both of their podcasts). Thanks so much Juli!!! 🙂 I agree with Juli about Paleo Solution, and I am so excited to read Wired to Eat by Robb Wolf. I also love Practical Paleo second addition by Diane Sanfillipo–I listen to her podcast religiously as well and she is super smart and explains things so well in her book and on her podcast. From one Paleo newbie to another–excited to keep enjoy learning and sharing all of this wonderful material! Good for both of you for starting so young–I am in my mid 30s, better late than never though, right? 🙂

Dude…. from one only child to another, GO TO GREECE. If your friends can’t do, you can hang with them when you get back.

  8. Jess says:

Go to Greece 100%!!!! For a major bday you deserve it!
I’m going to Ireland and Scotland with my husband and two closest cousins (who happen to be two of my best friends) for my 30 at the end of April, and I felt soooo guilty booking it but now I absolutely can’t wait!
I prioritize EXPERIENCES rather than things in my life, so that’s your same justification to go to Greece!
Side note: can’t wait to try the sushi bowls!

  9. Mary says:

So Greece is beautiful and the people there are so lovely and friendly. But the country is on the brink of collapse and they’re bankrupt. We were there a year and a half ago and it was so sad. They’ve had to completely defund they sanitation department so there are literally thousands of bags of garbage just piled up along the sides of the streets and poverty is seeping throughout. It’s so sad because so much of Greece is so truly beautiful. If you want to go to Europe, I highly recommend Spain ! The food is AMAZING! There’s beaches and amazing architecture , the people are warm and friendly and paleo eating is so doable. We were there a week in Barcelona and I went to a cafe every morning for an almond milk latte ( several cafes make there own but milk fresh daily) and the seafood was unbeatable. And Sangria! SANGRIA. As a former chef, I can’t recommend Barcelona enough.

Juli, have you ever tried dry needling and cupping!! No not talking about acupuncture I’m talking dry needling. Most amazing (yes can be painful) treatment for any muscle spasms!!!!!!!

    1. juli says:

i’ve tried dry needling and i absolutely hated it. i was in pain for days afterwards and never felt better from it 🙁
